the birthday of doctor martin luther king jr. good morning and thank you for watching wncn today. chase has the morning of -- off. he would've turned 71 today. the nation is celebrating his life and work as part of the holiday. an important way people are celebrating is through community service. we're live at the technical community college this morning.>> reporter: good morning. 500 volunteers are going to be here throughout the morning. this group just actually came in so they are getting training on what they are going to be doing this morning we have some all looks like. they are packing nails, price, meals and soup. volunteers from several local universities and the united way our planning on packing 100,000 of these meals. these will go to the interfaith food shuttle to distribute to people in central and eastern north carolina.

four. this effort has been going on since 2009 and it is now in the second year of focusing on in need. for volunteers, this is a holiday that is a day on an not all. >> the needs are great and so many of us are blessed with so much. every little bit we can get back to the community makes a stronger community. >> back out life, these volunteers joined about 3000 the triangle today. this day of service is really kicking off an initiative called 40 days of peace offering volunteer projects to serve through the twin now and the end of everywhere he. this is not just one day of giving back but a kickoff for a month-long project your quiet and germ -- lied interim --

how long cold air will stick around. >> a man killed in a weekend motorcycle accident has been identified as a fort bragg soldier. he was hit by a car on gillespie street near mountain drive saturday night at 5:30. police say that justin dunlap drove across the median and crashed into the 47-year-old soldiers recycle, killing him he was a command sergeant major. he is now facing a number of charges including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. he's being held on a $100,000 bond in the cumberland county detention center right now. a driver who killed two teenagers in a hit-and-run accident remains at large this morning. state trooper say they were hit while walking on us 421 on saturday night the 13-year-old and 16-year-old were killed. family friends tell wncn that carl's mother had a heart attack on saturday night and was actually in the hospital when she learned of the death. it is a shame that their
