and the sheriff says this kind of incident doesn't happen in his county. >> this type of an incident is something we can not accept as normal in our community. and we trust this community will come forward and help us solve this crime. >> reporter: because today was a holiday, the sheriff believes that someone could have been at home in the area and may have seen or heard something. they are talking to people in this community to see if they can learn any more information on this incident. for now, live in orange county, wncn news now. our other top story is those bitter cold temperatures. today will be the coldest that we see this week. wes hohenstein is here with the forecast. >> today's high was 35 degrees. that's cold enough, right? it gets colder tonight. freezing tomorrow. out there right now, we have most of us dropped into the mid and upper 20s. most of us also below freezing. and these numbers are going to tomorrow morning.

interesting with the wind. most of the winds calm. like you see right now in raleigh down in smithfield. but some of us still have five or six miles per hour winds. which isn't a strong wind, right? but it's strong enough to give us windchills all ready in the teens in some spots. like in henderson and roxboro, in sylar city. we're going to have some of the coldest temperatures and readings since last february. so at 8:00, 25 will feel like 18. 20 will feel like 14. and out the door tomorrow morning, heading back to work and school, 15 degrees on your thermometer will feel like 10 degrees. then we start to warm up. but we also bring in chances of rain and snow later this week. i'll run through both possibilities coming up in a few minutes. stay on top of the forecast by downloading the wncn news app. it comes complete with up to

the app is free for your apple or android device. the search continues for the driver who slammed into a group of teens over the weekend. it happened saturday night on u.s. 421 in harnett county. steve spoke with the victim's families and explains the message they have for the driver. >> i just hope and pray that the gentleman or person that did this is caught and will pay for what he did. because he not only took a life, he took two lives. and he shouldn't be out there. it's not fair that he still is. >> the heartbroken words of the mother of 13-year-old, jennifer. jennifer, 16-year-old kyle strait and steven daniels were walking along the highway. jennifer and kyle died. steven suffered critical injuries. jennifer's sister was walking

you can see from the tire tracks in the dirt. no sooner the vehicle hit the again. >> it hit them and it was gone. like -- and it was hard to process what had happened. but the truck didn't stop. >> jessica can't understand how somebody could do that. >> they know what they did was wrong. and they shouldn't try to get around it. >> kyle's older brother was too upset to speak on camera but he too has a message for the driver saying it won't end well if you don't turn yourself in. jennifer's sister also has a message for the driver. >> taking two lives and hurting people, it's just -- how can you live with yourself? >> in harnett county, wncn news now. an elderly couple in wilson is dead after what police are calling a murder suicide. police found the bodies inside a home on chelsea drive. the woman went to wakemed where

pair's identity. durham police are searching for a silver mini van involved in an over night hit and run. it happened near the intersection of avondale avenue and howard street. police say the van hit a man and took off. crews took the victim to the hospital with serious injuries. please call crime stoppers if you know anything. the fort bragg community is mourning the loss of a command sergeant major killed in a motorcycle crash over the 47-year-old lynn lost his life at the hands of a wrong-way driver saturday night. wncn's david hurst tells us how fellow soldiers are paying tribute to him. >> reporter: he's described as a quiet yet profound leader. >> our country, our army lost a great american today. >> on saturday night before he was set to retire, command sergeant major radially was killed in a motorcycle crash. he was riding his motorcycle here when a wrong-way driver hit him head-on.

arrested and faces a handful of charges including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. >> we're still in shock. >> the death has left a large medical battalion. >> he had a depth of knowledge and sense of camaraderie with down-to-earth one on one with the soldiers and was able to guide them very well. >> he's served in military installations across the country and made a profound impact on many soldier's lives. the soldiers are now without a mentor, a friend, and a leader who's actions spoke louder than his words. >> now is a time for strength. and to be there for his family and to lead these soldiers and give them a shoulder to lean on. there's going to be brighter days ahead. david hurst, wncn news now. a sink hole closed a road in chatham county.

flooding last month. authorities say the road will be closed until the zip hole is repaired. so be mindful for detours. thousands gathered across the nation to honor the life and legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. the president and first lady spent part of their day volunteering at an elementary school. they helped plant vegetable seeds in a garden bed. a massive crowd showed up in atlanta where dr. king used to preach. his youngest daughter told the crowd that people are quote distracted by reality tv shows and have allowed new real life challenges to emerge. >> new voting right restrictions have been created. while we've been distracted, our educational system is the worst in the world. wow. we have been distracted. carbon footprints are growing and global warming is out of control. >> dr. king's daughter bernice

quote the wild west of guns. downtown raleigh placed host to a march to remember dr. king. bo minnick was there and shows us how people say the civil right's leader's message resonates with them today. >> through song. and through words. people. remembered. >> it just means everything. i have to represent dr. king's dream. >> reporter: every year raleigh honored dr. martin luther king jr. his message of peace and unity and progress. >> i think he would be proud of some of the changes that we've accomplished. but i think he would also think there's a long way to go. >> reporter: they spoke about race relations in our country. the confederate flag debate, police community relations or the status of people looking to obtain citizenship, there's no shortage of topics that have left america divided. >> we want the world to become a better place for all men to

>> we ask people marching today what they think needs to happen in order for relations to improve. >> we need to unite on a common purpose and work together to get equal rights. equal pay. >> like each other. love each other. be friends to each other man. >> have people get into the community. participate in marches. stand side by side. brothers and sisters no matter what your race and religion is. >> words they say are in harmony with dr. king's message. >> you can't erase history. from history. and not repeat it. >> in raleigh, bo minnick, wncn news now. the march is called the fierce urgency of now memorial march. this is the 36th year for the event in downtown raleigh. thousands of people in the triangle mark this martin luther king jr. holiday as a day of service. more than 500 volunteers packed meals at durham tech. each bag will feed a family of four. volunteers we spoke with say

parts. today we wanted to do something different and help families out. and i thought it'd be a good example to bring my daughter out to help us out today. >> to try to help people. starve. >> this day of service kicked off an initiative called 40 days of peace. it offers volunteer projects through the end of february. north carolina has a special connection to dr. king. before the civil rights icon gave his i have a dream speech in washington dc, he shared it first at rocky mount high school. >> i have a dream one day right here in rocky mount north carolina the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will meet at the table of brother hood. >> dr. king delivered that speech in the gym of rocky mount high school eight months before his 1963 dc address. the recording was released to

the country reached with world leaders last year. sanctions were lifted after international inspectors said iran is holding up its end of the agreement. tens of billions of dollars in frozen assets is expected to come back to the con my. iran is expected to flood the market with oil. sending gas prices lower. in michigan, one station was selling gas below a dollar. prompted by a price war between three gas stations there. nationally. 1.88. down 30-cents from this time last year. tonight bitter cold temperature, snow and ice are gripping parts of the country. the snow turned this morning's drive into a demolition derby in syracuse new york with more than three dozen accidents. near white out conditions led to several crashes in connecticut. sub zero temperatures forced commuters to bundle up in chicago. meanwhile, extreme conditions

firefighters in iowa this morning. >> two fire hydrants. >> forecasters say the conditions could get even worse in the midwest by the end of the week. during this cold weather, make sure to check your car's tire pressure, tires lose pressure in cold temperatures, mechanics say proper pressure is important for better mileage, performance, and safety. >> the car's not going to handle as well if the tars are under inflated. and the tire will not carry the weight of the vehicle if it's under inflated. which will cause the tire to build up heat. and it's more susceptible to tire failure. >> you should check your tires before driving and inflate the tires to the air pressure recommended by the manufacturer. that information is located on the driver's door panel. i'm joined with chief meteorologist wes hohenstein. with warm temperatures leading up to this frigid cold you forget about your tire pressure. >> your tires don't like it.

it's a little confusing. but some of the coldest temperatures we've had since last february are coming tomorrow morning. today was cold enough. 35 degrees. that's not even the coldest day this week. that will come tomorrow when we barely get above freezing. and that's enough, right? that's a full week. we had a little bit of snow over the weekend. how about we coast through the rest of the week. that won't be the case. we have the chance of flurries again wednesday. and rain and snow possible by the end of this week. and the whole time, we're not even getting up to the average high of 51 degrees. so a cold week ahead for sure. it's 28 now. and there's some colder air up to our north. and more of that will spill in over night. and that's how we're going to wind up like this as we take you hour by hour, no rain, no clouds. it's all a temperature forecast. so 25 at 8:00 will feel like 18 as we take you hour by hour, we'll go temperature over windchill. and let's cut right to it.

will feel like 10 degrees. and that's just with a 5 or 6 miles per hour wind. imagine if it was even windier than that. so we're thankful for this. and then we've got some more things to talk about later this week. so the cold front moved through last night. there it is. now high pressure will settle right on top of us over night. that's always the coldest night. the second night after a cold front, when high pressure sits on top of us. and then we've got some flurries to talk about wednesday. so first of all, tomorrow morning and really across the whole state, there's not much going on. no clouds, no precipitation, then we get into tuesday night, and early wednesday morning. that's when we'll start to see clouds move in. and i want you to watch what happens wednesday afternoon up in the mountains. they're going to have some snow. but as that system comes across the mown, it's going tagetes torn apart, and we have a very dry atmosphere. a lot of this moisture will evaporate before it gets here. most of the moisture not all of

wednesday night, watch as a little bit of light snow or light rain, probably snow flurries will show up. not having a big impact. but creating a little excitement wednesday night after the sunsets. and then we get into thursday and we've got some calm weather. calm weather before friday and saturday. that's when an area of low pressure will ride up from the south, the gulf coast, it'll come up the east coast. we're not exactly sure of the placement yet. but either way it's going to it. and we'll also have cold air pushing down from the north. and that combination is usually what brings us an interesting weather event. right now rain looks likely air. way too early to give you any kind of snow totals but what we can tell you, the coldest temperature since february coming tomorrow morning.

night, and then a bigger winter storm friday and into saturday with rain likely and the possibility of snow. we also know these are the numbers that will greet you tomorrow morning with windchills possibly as cold as 8 or 9 or 10 degrees. we don't warm up that much tomorrow during the day, but it'll be sunny and stay sunny throughout the day. and we have another morning in the teens. wednesday morning, there are your flurries coming wednesday night. during the day, it'll get up to 40 wednesday. 47 thursday. and then a wet and possibly white weather event coming friday into saturday. so plan on some cold rain friday. but early friday morning when it starts, and early saturday morning when it ends is when we could possibly see snow, several days to work out all the details. that will be the main focus after we get through the cold morning tomorrow morning. >> all right wes. we'll check back to you on this throughout the day and tonight as well as tomorrow. thank you. all right. some big changes are coming to

their nerve racking we're back with breaking news in san francisco. that's where black lives matter protesters have shut down the bay bridge. you are looking right now at live pictures. a live aerial of the scene. as you can see, police in riot gear have responded. we are also hearing word that there have been arrests made. we don't know much more of the details of how many people have been arrested or how many people helped shut down that bridge. but we'll have further information tonight on wncn news at 11:00. as well as wncn.com. tonight in sports the carolina panthers are one win away from the super bowl but will face a tough test sunday when they host arizona in the nfc championship game. the panthers made it to the big game by beating the seattle seahawks yesterday in charlotte. the game was a tale of two halves though. carolina got off to a hot start and led 31-0 at halftime. but the seahawks mounted a spirited come back in the second half before ultimately
