discuss the csx project. extra sheriff deputies were at school today one day after a man was shot dead in a nearby parking lot. >> i'm shaken up. i haven't heard gunshots around that area ever. deputies responded to the scene and found the body of 22-year- old tevon kendrick of durham. he was found on the back of a white car with an open trunk. >> we're thinking we're not going to know who did it. people not from this area from the track record of this area. we're puzzled as to who would do this in the middle of the day. >> deputies are searching for the gunman. but they don't believe there's a threat to the school or those who live in nearby homes. fayetteville residents are weighing in on the centers controversial seal. >> the logo was called a symbol of slavery and they want it removed. nate rogers has the story. >> three meetings taking place throughout fayetteville happening now simultaneously.

the recreation center off beaver street. city leaders will hear both sides from residents. those who find no problem with the seal. and others who say it's offensive. this house is pictured in the logo. critics say the building is a symbol of slavery and doesn't reflect the city. slaves were sold at the market house during the 1800s. >> the seal is fine. it doesn't offend me. but it offends other people. >> if you want to represent and be something as a source of pride for the city, it's not a source of pride for the city. if you want it to be a landmark, it's a landmark. >> an online pole asked residents if the market house should be removed from the seal. 200 people said yes. 15 others said the seal should remain the same.

there will be more meetings throughout fayetteville. following that, the city council will decide whether or not to change the seal. in fayetteville, nate rogers, wncn news now. the federal government is investigating how duke university handles sexual assault cases. the university was notified in november. they'll review how council handles reports filed by students and staff. today the supreme court announced it will hear a case on president obama's executive actions on immigration. >> the 2014 policy which shield undocumented immigrants from deportation. allowing adults here illegally for more than five years stay if they have a clean record and their children are u.s. citizens. 25 states successfully blocked the move in lower courts arguing they'd have to pay a large price for those allowed to stay. a decision is expected by the end of june.

popularity of vaping, businesses are having trouble keeping up. now some hospitals in our state are banning the popular devices. carly joins us in the studio to explain. >> offices have long banned tobacco product use inside their facilities and some systems don't allow it on the property. when it comes to electronic cigarettes, regulations aren't as well known, researchers conducted a systematic survey of policies in north carolina hospitals. they found that 80% of those surveyed ban vaping along with smoking. >> the fact that most hospitals in north carolina have banned e cigarettes, i think that should serve as an example to other places of business, you know, that may currently have smoke- free or tow tobacco-free policies. just because it's very unclear

are, this is wncn news now at 7:00. a visually impaired law student is reaching out for help after learning her guide dog needs major surgery. >> the dog named ricky is well known around campbell law and as wncn's maggie newland explains, the community is stepping up to help one of its own. >> reporter: for the past four years meredith and ricky have been inseparable. the two care for each other. meredith is legally blind, ricky is her guide dog. she accompanies her to classes where the dog has become a favorite among professors and fellow students. >> ricky is always looking at me. i said the dog is paying attention. i don't know if the rest of the class is or not. >> ricky helps meredith find an empty seat in class and navigate her way to school. >> any where there's moving cars or traffic is the most dangerous. >> just crossing the street can be a frightening experience.

>> it is cold out here. and temperatures today only warmed up to near freezing across the area. making it the coldest day since last february. and these bitter cold temperatures can do a number on your car battery. so if you woke up this morning to a car that wouldn't start, you're definitely not alone. aaa says cars for dead batteries and weak car batteries nearly doubled today around the triangle thanks to the frigid temperatures. >> on a typical day we field 250 calls on average and 20% of those calls are battery related. on a day like today, we see 40%. that translates from roughly 40 to 50 calls being battery related to potentially 100. >> aaa says once the temperatures dip below 32 degrees your car battery can actually lose up to 35% of its strength depending on the type of battery. they recommend having your battery checked and also not to

and if you do park your car in a garage, that may prevent some of the effects that the cold actually has on that. definitely something to consider with another night with these temperatures falling into the teens. some helpful tips. another cold night ahead. for more on what to expect on your weather, let's turn things over to chief meteorologist wes hohenstein. >> i had trouble getting started this morning too. i don't know if you were in the same boat. 18 is where we were this morning. i'll start tonight with friends in st. louis. because they need our thoughts. they're trying to get home from work tonight with snow falling. and it's that snow that will be here in our area for our commute in 24 hours. the good news is, it'll be a fraction of what it is now. but a smooth ride home tonight on 440 eastbound and westbound here in north raleigh. could have a little light snow and snow flurries tomorrow. it's currently 27 degrees. we have dropped a whole 5 degrees from our high.

so we haven't been above freezing since yesterday. and we're not going to be close to freezing tonight as temperatures fall to 25 at 8:00. 22 at 10:00. the good news is winds are light. they're going to be almost not a player in our windchill forecast. but that doesn't matter. look at our temperatures. down to 19 at 2:00. and you're out the door tomorrow morning, 16 degrees. we will also start to see a few clouds tomorrow morning. tonight we have high pressure in control. that's doing a couple things to us. it's really drying out our atmosphere. i'm is sure you feel that on your hands, very dry. you have to go through about a gallon of lotionment we're talking about a light snow, a flurry event tomorrow. this area of high pressure is helping to keep it cold, that's not good because the ground is cold. that first snow flake, it might just be a flurry. there might not be a lot of them. it's going to stick.

commute, it might cause a few issues. let's pick up the weather map and figure out when this will go down tomorrow. we'll start off in the morning. we'll be dry. we'll be cold. we'll see increasing clouds. those clouds with us throughout the day. you see the snow on the mountains. it's going to fall apart. it'll get closer to the area by about 4:00. that's when you guys in pierson county could see a flake or two. it will continue to fall apart as it moves through the area. this will mainly be a triangle north event. it's going to happen during the evening commute. a lot of cars on the roads with a little light snow or flurries could create a few slick spots. we clear out. thursday will be the calm weather event. but again for tomorrow, we're looking at light snow or flurries between 4:00 and 9:00. i'll call it a minor event only because of the timing. if this happened at 9:00, not a big deal. but because there's going to be cars on the roads, there could

because it's happening late in the day, i don't anticipate schools making changes to the plans tomorrow. then on friday, this is a classic winter weather set up for us. we get low pressure coming up from the south. it's going to bring a lot of moisture with it. we'll have a decent amount of cold rain on friday. but with cold air pushing down from the north, when this thing starts early friday morning and when it ends saturday morning, we could have more than just rain. and i'm talking sleet, freezing rain, and snow. it's still all in the mix. i'm not ready to go with any totals. i'll talk about that maybe tomorrow night. that's when we get more specific. this is several days away. but something to keep a close eye on. we have light snow tomorrow nightment we have bigger snow coming friday. and it's a mostly cold rain event. there could be heavy down pours as a matter of fact. but when it's early friday morning and we're getting some sleet and freezing rain in areas, that's going to be a problem and some possible

morning could also be an issue. more specifics in 24 to 48 hours. what we know for sure, it's going to be another cold morning tomorrow in the teens. while it will be warmer during the day, we're still stuck in the 30s. and we're still going to keep an eye out for light snow flurries tomorrow late afternoon and evening. we'll calm it down. warm it up a bit on thursday. but we're back in the 30s friday. with a mess of weather coming. i'm telling you friday is not going to be a pleasant day. but we will eventually break out of that funk and by sunday, we have sunshine and 47. and we have 50s as we get into next week. like i said earlier, it very well could be by the end of the week, we'd have three different snow events and that rarely happens around here. and last saturday, it was in the 60s. >> it was fun to go out last saturday. >> what a distant memory that seems. >> next week, if we get 50s, we'll be happy with that. it's billed as the safest football helmet ever made. >> we take a look inside at the
