hump day, the freezing temperatures our news. >> yeah, mecklenburg county virginia school are starting at 10:00 a.m. today because of the weather. but speaking of the weather, alyssa ks -- flurries possible? you got my attention. >> yeah, potential, late this afternoon and in to the evening hours. right now starting pretty much in the clear around central north carolina. we don't have to head far back to our west to see more cloud cover. already a few flurries starting to fly in the mountains. so other than that, a quiet morning for us but a very cold morning for us. yesterday temperatures were just as cold but with the wind chill it felt more like the single digits. this morning we're starting at 19 in raleigh, 20 in durham, 18 louisburg and henderson, 14 right now south hill t mecklenburg county, that includes south hill, starting two hours late. 21 fayetteville and 21 lillington. so here's your fast forward forecast for today, pretty clear

freezing at noon today and that's where we hit yesterday for an afternoon high. we'll add about five degrees as we head to 3:00, our high 37. and then unfortunate timing with the chance for flurries, they'll be here for our evening commute. won't take much to cause a few slick spots, i do think that's a possibility. as you're planning for your evening drive home today, know that will be a possibility. we're back to 33 by 6:00 p.m. that's your fast forecast, the complete forecast in just a little bit. but now with your driving condition, i-40, looking pretty clear on this wednesday morning, if you're heading in this direction, maybe to rtp, the commute should be all yours. let's go ahead and show you life drive conditions, all green around the inner belt line and 540 loop as well. if you're heading out the door right now, bundle up, you will need it as those temperatures are well below freezing. >> all right, thanks so much. got breaking news in the wncn news center, raleigh police

morning shooting near the campus of st. augustine's university, around 1:00 a.m. crews took the victim to the hospital, a student and is expected to be okay. officers did make an arrest. university officials put the campus on lockdown while officers investigated, classes will start at 8:00 a.m. like normal, we'll continue to update through the morning, right here on air and online. a gunman stormed a university in pakistan. police say at least two of the dead are a student and a teacher. several other people are wounded. police say the attack happened shortly after the university opened up. police and the army exchanged gun fire with the attackers. and right now we continue our team coverage of those freezing temperatures out there. >> yeah, this morning, d.o.t. crews will head back out and treat the roads ahead of any winter weather we could see. emma wright joins us from the salt barns in raleigh right now with an update, good morning. >> reporter: governor pat

everybody start preparing for possible road conditions, at the maintenance yard here in raleigh, pretty dark, no one out here yet but we're told they're going to start salting and brining the roads a little bit later on this morning. the state says they don't expect any significant accumulation in our area but they say they're preparing just in case, also encouraging everyone to stay warm and to avoid using alternative heating sources like the oven or grills to keep your house heated. duke energy say they see a spike in energy during these very cold winter months and sometimes customers can be hit with high bills. they do have plan in place to help anyone who may be struggling. >> we work with agencies across the state, local nonprofits and government agencies to help distribute these funds to our customers who are in need. >> reporter: you can find more information about duke's energy assistant programs on our website, that is wncn.com. as for the trucks out here, we're told they're going to begin brining the major roads

later on this morning after rush hour. reporting live in raleigh, i'm emma wright, wncn news. >> all right, emma, try to stay warm out there, we appreciate that report. ahead of frigid weather, sheriff's deputyies checked on seniors and people living alone as well, and looked out for cars along the side of the road to make sure drivers had the help they needed and somewhere that's warm to go. >> just make sure that we all play a part in checking on our citizens that may be disabled, or elderly citizens that may need a little extra help. >> sheriff's office did not increase staffing last night though, but that could happen this week. deputies are already on call in case the snow shows up and starts causing issues in the area. with all that being said, stay on top of the weather conditions by downloading the wncn news now app, it comes complete with the latest forecast radar and push alerts when the forecast changes.

your apple device. right now durham police investigating a crash involving an officer. investigators say the police officer was on durham chapel hill hill boulevard around 8:30 last night. the other vehicle was headed in the other direction and veered in to oncoming traffic. the officer swerved and got hit in the passenger side. nobody hurt. they found drugs on the driver of the other car, charges now pending. also learning more about a man touchdown dead in an orange county neighborhood. monday deputies found the body of 22-year-old kendrick of durham at the chicks community center on the ground near the back of a white car with an open trunk. sheriff's deputies are still searching for the gunman but do not believe there's a threat to the school or those nearby. >> we found out somebody was dead, so, it's been a crazy 24 hours, really crazy. >> extra sheriff's deputies were on hand at aflin cheeks

near where the shooting took place. revising the proposal to change elementary schools to year round, now four schools surveys done by the school system shows most of the staff supports the move. parents on the other hand are not as sold on the idea though the move is being discussed in hope of helping elementary schools not performing as well academyically. saying it won't happen until the 2017 school year. besides getting to see us early in the morning, we have another reason for you to wake up at this time. forecast. >> all right, welcome back to wncn today, in the weather center with meteorologist alyssa corfont, i've been holding my coffee like a warmer, it's cold in here too. >> i brought my indoor mittens, it's cold. >> no other way to say it, cold outside and now you say there's a chance of precipitation coming on later on this afternoon? >> yeah, and it's going to be unfortunate timing because it's going to be for the evening drive home, the timing will be crucial. >> yeah. >> yeah, so here we are this morning, this morning's commute will be an easy one, 19 degrees, the bottom of our camera a little frosted up though at the airport 19. right now, here in raleigh, temperatures elsewhere, 16 sanford, 19 pinehurst. 20 right thousand ray -- right now raeford, 21 clinton, and still the upper teens as we check in around rocky mount, rather. and goldsboro, this morning. these temperatures are just the beginning. as we head throughout the day, we'll see the temperatures

but right now as we head in the rest of the morning, 17 at 7:00 a.m., climb just a degree to 18 by 8:00 a.m. and then the low 20s by 9:00 this morning. let me show you the big picture, this system back to our west. looks bigger than when it moves through our area. a lot of this moisture won't make it so central north carolina. but as the system approaches, it's going to arrive in time for that evening drive home, we snow shower. 37 our high for today, 45 tomorrow and we're dry and then it's the system that everyone's been talking about this week, 37 our high on friday, and i do think this system is going to start as a wintry mix, could be messy for friday morning. of course, we'll fine tune this forecast ari asnd it develops. right now send it back to mike gonzalez. >> thanks so much, alyssa, appreciate that report. severe weather hits the cuban capital of havana, gale force winds for more than 30

take a look, the wind kicked up gigantic waves forcing to close the roads, stranding residents. the severe weather was caused by the subtropical low pressure in florida. we'll keep you updated on the situation there. a tour boat caught fire in new zealand, forcing 60 people overboard, it was a half mile from shore, the boat eventually sunk. two people taken to the hospital with minor injuries. that's when your wife goes, we're not going on that tour again. >> "wncn today" what you need to know right now. >> 4:44, top stories right now. raleigh police investigating an early morning shooting on the campus of st. augustine's university. >> it happened at 1:00 this morning, officers found a student shot, the victim expected to survive. officers made arrests, class will start as scheduled this morning. also breaking this morning, at least 19 are dead after a gunman stormed a university in pakistan. police say at least two of the dead are a student and a teacher as well. no one has taken responsibility for the attack at this point. sheriff's deputies in durham county check ond people who may need -- checked on people who may need help during the frigid weather, they're on call. the department of transportation will tread the roads throughout our -- treat the roads throughout our area again today. presidential candidate donald trump and former alaska governor palin will hit the campaign trail together. palin announced her support for trump. palin praised trump as a candidate who has shaken up the republican party.

events today in iowa and oklahoma. today, u.s. attorney general and durham native loretta lynch will testify before a sub-committee about gun control. a hearing surrounds the justice role in executive actions related to gun control. now earlier this month, president obama announced executive actions designed to reduce gun violence. those proposals focused on background checks, mental health treatment and advanced gun safety technology. republican presidential candidate ben carson suspended his campaign events after a group of his staffers involved in a deadly car crash in iowa. brandon joplin died after it flipped over and was hit by another vehicle. the three other passengers in the van were treated and released from the hospital. two women died and nine others were hurt when a bus crasheded and flipped on -- crashed and flipped on its side in san jose, on its way from oakland, the driver admitted he wad sleepy.

he fell asleep at the time. more positive news, oscar winning actor and song writer jamie foxx being called a hero this morning. >> yeah, the california highway patrol says is foxx and another man helped free a driver from a crash, outside his home on monday. the driver, 32-year-old brett kyle was drunk and speeding. he hit a drainage pipe, the truck rolled over, busted out in flames, kyle's in intensive care with third degree burns. this dog is a staple for the campbell law, helping meredith get around campus. >> now the campus is coming together to help her out, maggie newland has the story. >> ricky, can you shake? >> reporter: inseparable. >> like my cold. >> reporter: the two care for each other, meredith is legally blind, ricky is her guide dog, the dog has become a favorite among professors and students.

>> always looking at me, so i said the dog is paying attention! i don't know if the rest of the class is or not! [ laughter ] >> reporter: ricky helps meredith find an empty seat in class and help her navigate to school. >> anywhere there's cars or traffic is the most dangerous. >> reporter: for those who can't see clearly, just crossing the street is a frightening experience, but ricky acts as eyes, giving a sense of security. >> i know she sees everything and is looking at everything and i don't have to worry about it. >> reporter: she's too sick to go to school. >> she's more tired than usual. >> reporter: she became lethargic and stopped eating, meredith learned she has a mass on her spleen. she needs surgery and it's expected to cost about $7,000. meredith started a gofundme page and reached her goal in less than 24 hours, thanks in large part to those in campbell. >> it blows my mind and the amount of kindness and generosity that everybody has

towards downtown raleigh. clear skied for the morning hours, however. that's quickly going to change as we head throughout the day. i'll explain that in a moment. but let's talk about those temperatures, pretty brutal at times this morning. 13 in south hill, virginia. and of course web mechanic -- remember mecklenburg county schools in virginia are starting on a two hour delay this morning. 16 degrees in roanoke rapids, louisburg and raeford, 20 degrees. here's what you need to know, pretty sunny conditions, 18 at 8:00 a.m., at freezing at lunch time today. 37 our afternoon high. that's going to be a little warmer than where we were yesterday. then we fall back in the low 30s by 6:00 p.m. i do think, 5:00, 6:00 that we start to see the chance for a few snow flurries come in. that system, still well back to our west, bringing snow across kentucky. they're looking at snow and a wintry mix towards memphis,

central portions of tennessee as we speak. this system approaching us late this afternoon in to the evening, the timing here is going to be crucial. so i'll walk you through hour by hour on our future forecast. 8:00 a.m., clear to turning partly cloudy, the afternoon hours are going to be mostly cloudy starting at about lunch time, that's where we are here, that snow still back to our west and at lunch time, we'll stop this again at 6:00 p.m. we'll see very light flurries, a light snow shower is also possible, and the roadways are cold enough that these flurries could cause slick spots in isolated areas. not going to be widespread, but it only takes a few spots to really make that drive home on the tricky side. as we head towards midnight tonight, all of this will be out of the area. i'm not expecting any road problems tomorrow morning. as a matter of fact, i'm expecting pretty sunny condition on our thursday morning, few clouds mixing in from time to time heading in to the afternoon. and then the showers that we're seeing back to our south and west, that's the beginning of our next system. that arriving late thursday

friday in to saturday could be a little messy for us. so here's the set up. we have this area of low pressure that's going to be tracking up the east coast, and depending on where the cold air and where the moisture meet, it's going to depend on not only what kind of precipitation we see, but how much we see of it. i still think a large part of that is going to fall as a cold rain. however, with this system coming in early friday morning, those temperatures are going to be conducive to see a light wintry mix. so friday morning's commute, again, is another time frame we're watching for it to be a little icy. so 37 our high today in raleigh. 36 durham, 41 fayetteville. head in to overnight tonight, the snow ends partly cloudy, 26 degrees, winds coming from the northwest. now as we head in to the coming days, thursday's going to be our quiet day. enjoy it because here comes friday. we'll start off as a wintry mix, seeing coldafrnoon. we could see that wintry mix again return as we head towards saturday morning, saturday
