1:00 this morning. emergency responders took one person to the hospital. we've learned that victim is a student at the university and they're expected to be okay. officers did make an arrest, university officials put the campus on lockdown while officers investigated but that lockdown has been lifted. the investigation is ongoing. again, university officials say there is no threat to the campus, classes will start at 8:00 this morning like normal. we'll continue to follow this breaking news. stefan, back to you. >> all right, lauren, thank you so much. right now we continue our team coverage of the freezing temperatures. this morning, department of transportation crews are heading back out and treating the roads ahead of any winter weather that we could see. wncn's emma wright joins us live from the salt barn in raleigh with more on the governor's plan on this, emma? >> reporter: governor mccrory has started the state preparing for any potential dangerous weather we may be having, we're here at one of the maintenance

filling the truck with brine and getting them out on the road later this morning, not expecting any significant ice or snow but they do want to be prepared. they're also warning everyone to play it safe with their own safety. doctors say exposure to cold weather like we're experiencing now can have long-term health effect. they say profit frost -- frost bite is just one of the conditions you need to watch for. >> we see increased heart attacks and visits to the emergency room when it's cold outside. especially if there's snow or other thing that require physical activity where we're out shafling snow and -- shovelling snow and things like that, a strain on the cardiovascular system, because the fingers and the toes they constrict and get smaller, the heart has to work harder against a higher pressure, it can increase stress. >> reporter: dr. campbell like you heard, obviously if you feel you're having any health problems because of this cold weather, you should get it checked out.

was on lockdown following the shooting, understand online and on air. investigating after an officer involved crash, around 8:30 last night, no one injured, charngs in the -- charges in the crash. preparing right now, sheriff's deputy in durham county spent time checking on people who might need help, deputies are on call in case of snow. criminal investigators with the durham county sheriff's office urging citizens to be aware of phone scam they say are coming from the phone number 919-214-0305 yeah, posing as lieutenant simpson with the sheriff's office, and telling you to pay with money with a prepaid card to get out of a warrant. also saying law enforcement will never ask for money over the phone, keep that in mind. hospitals are long banned smoking inside their facilities, but e-cigarettes, regulations aren't as well-known.

we're looking at 00.10 of an inch possible, friday in to saturday a classic system for the carolinas. we have this area of low pressure working up the east coast, cold air bottled up to our north and west, going to fight it out over the coming days as this area of low pressure moves over north carolina, i think we'll be looking at the best chance for a wintry mix friday morning. this will likely eventually change to a cold rain friday afternoon, could change back in to a wintry mix as we head in to saturday. friday in to saturday has the potential to be rather messy. 37 our high today, 36 durham, and 41 in fayetteville. overnight tonight, we're going to drop in the mid 20s, any snow that is out there will quickly taper off, we're following again in the mid 20s with the light wind. enjoy tomorrow, 45 partly sunny, then comes friday, start ofg as a wintry mix, changing in to that cold rain could change back

county neighborhood. monday deputies found the body of 22-year-old tavin kendrick of durham on the ground near the back of a white car with an open trunk. still searching for the gunman but do not believe there's a threat to the school or those nearby. >> we found out somebody that was dead. so, it's been a crazy 24 hours, real been crazy. >> crazy and scary. extra sheriff's deputies were on hand at the elementary school as a precaution, right next to where the shooting took place. wake county school board revises its proposal to switch nine elementary school from traditional to year round calendars, now the proposal includes four schools. surveys done by the school system shows most of the staff at the school supports the move but parents on the other hand have had a really mixed reaction, not sold on the idea. the move is being discussed in hopes of helping elementary schools not performing as well academically.

presidential candidate donald trump and former alaska governor sarah palin will hit the campaign trail together. yesterday palin announced her support of trump. praising him as a candidate who has shaken up the republican party. palin and trump will attend events today in iowa and also in oklahoma. and today, u.s. attorney general and durham native loretta lynch will testify before a senate sub-committee about gun control. just as departments roll in implementing new executive actions related to gun control. earlier this month, president obama announced executive actions designed to reduce gun violence. and those proposals focus on background checks, mental health treatment, and also advance gun safety technology. republican presidential candidate ben carson suspended his campaign events after a group of staffers were involved in a deadly car crash in iowa. 25-year-old joplin died after the van he was driving in flipped over on an icy stretch

here's your hourly forecast, for today, 18 degrees at 8:00 a.m., 26 at 10:00 a.m., at freezing at lunch time today. remember, freezing was our high yesterday. we keep on climbing this afternoon to right around 37 for our afternoon high, that's when we'll start to see the chance for a few flurries, calling it for 5:00 this evening, right on through your evening drive home. i want to show you the big picture. we've been looking at high pressure controlling our weather over the past few days. it's still overhead this morning, but our bigger focus is this system back to our west. those snow showers falling across kentucky, tennessee, indiana, and ohio this morning all heading in our direction. now, for the most part, that moisture is going to fall apart. not a lot of it is going to make it in to our area. here's what we're thinking, here's our futurecast forecast starting off at 10:00 a.m., we're already seeing more clouds than anything else. those clouds hold steady through lunch time today. we head in to your evening drive home. here we are, 6:00 p.m. light snow showers, flurries certainly

if you're seeing that light snow shower, know that there will be the possibility for some slick spots on the roadways. as fast as that system moves out, moves it to it our east and we'll be looking at clearing skies throughout the early morning hours of our thursday, thursday is going to be a quiet day for us. now as far as the snowfall forecast, just a dusting possible in grassy surfaces, mainly. again, if we start to see that snow come down at a steadier pace, look for slick spots on the roadways. as far as any accumulation, possibly close to a 0.10 of an inch in louisburg. then another system to contend with, coming through friday. in to saturday. this is the system everyone's been talking about. now the track of this area of low pressure is going to be crucial to what we'll see. right now i think there's a good chance it will start off as a wintry mix friday morning, change in to a cold rain friday afternoon. we could see more wintry mix conditions as we head in to saturday. but if this forecast holds

accident near exit 183, redwood road causing backups in that direction. we also still have that water main break we're watching, it's at gere street, essex and harty street that's closed a crew on the scene and we'll keep you up to date that az that -- as that progresses. this morning the search continues for two college students swept out to sea off the coast of california. >> pretty horrific. sweeping away five santa cruz students but three were able to climb up to rocks at the base of the cliff but a 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman never made it out, crews still searching with a helicopter and a boat. >> holding out hope. >> that's for sure. firefighters in philadelphia are braving cold temperatures and high winds as they battle a fire at an apartment complex. >> in fact one firefighter had to be taken to a nearby hospital after suffering heart issues. right now we don't know the condition of the firefighter or what started the fire.
