and the list is right there. emma wright is check out the roads and how the d.o.t. plans to keep us safe on the roads during the winter weather tomorrow. but first we want to get to meteorologist alyssa corfont who has your forecast. good morning. just down from the national whether service, we have a -- weather service, we have a winter storm warning that will go into effect at midnight. this includes wake county, durham and pretty much from wake north and west and the line extends down to more and lee county. if our on the southeastern portions of that line, you're still under a winter weather advisory as we speak. let's take a look at the big picture. it doesn't look like much right now. but there's an area of low pressure developing in texas and louisiana. and that will be moving into our area, bringing all of that moisture with it. and it collides with the cold air and that is it when we could have the winter storm develop tomorrow. in the meantime, this morning,

not as cold as where we have been. 28 in durham, 27 in raleigh, 31 in littleton, fayetteville and clinton. so let's get to the forecast today. before the winter storm arrives, we're tracking plenty of sunshine and mid-20s at 8:00 a.m. and 38 at noon and 44 the afternoon high and we'll be back into the upper 30s by 6:00 p.m. and we're staying dry all day long today. and it is at 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning that i think the wintry mix starts to move in. and it's going to stick around through 10:00 p.m. on saturday. and we're talking about accumulations up to half an inch of ice and one and five inches of snow. and this will be a big event for us and travel is going to be dangerous. so you're to have to watch as the forecast comes into line this morning and through the day tomorrow. and we'll keep you updated. right now, let's switch gears and check in with traffic. if you're getting ready to head out the door, this is i40 and wade avenue.

we'll go ahead and take a look at some speeds. if you're getting ready to head out the door, moving 64 miles an hour, i540 westbound, similar speeds as well. so cruising along on this thursday morning. governor mccrory will hold a news conference in less than 24 for what could be north carolina's first winter storm of the year. they are warning everyone to get prepared right now. emma wright is live in wake county with more. >> reporter: the d.o.t. workers said they've been pretreating the roads since tuesday in preparation for the upcoming storm this is a brine solution that is a mixture of salt that they put on the roads before the snow starts to fall to hopefully prevent it from sticking.

north carolina roads are ready for winter. >> when they have dry conditions like yesterday and today, we try to get as many as the major interstates of covered as possible. >> reporter: d.o.t. trucks are filling up and heading out, treating the major interstates first and then the secondary roads. >> once it gets down, they say try to play catchup. so i guess the brine works. >> reporter: they are trying to get ahead of the storm that could bring snow and ice, a recipe for a messy morning commute. >> when i get the opportunity to stay in, i will stay n. >> reporter: if you cannot stay in, take slow. but the best way to prepare for the storm is to just stay home, if you can. staying home is not an option for everyone. but the highway patrol said if you take it slow and take a look at newburn avenue that is a little bit of frozen water on the road there.

plenty of sunshine today. it is hard to believe that we're tracking a winter storm right now. 28 at 8:00 a.m. and 33 at 10:00 a.m. and 38 at noon. so quickly above freezing for us. and 44 our afternoon high and we drop into the upper 30s and dry from start to finish today. and now tomorrow, let's talk about that. an area of low pressure is developing over texas and louisiana and it is still developing and that makes this forecast tricky. but we're watching between 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and 10:00 p.m. on saturday. this will be a prolonged event for us. and i believe it will start as a wintry mix tomorrow morning. so we could quickly add up to about half an inch of high school. and this will be enough to bring down power lines and trees. so this could be a concern for us and as we head towards saturday morning, this could change to snow, accumulations between 1 and 5:00 inches -- one and five inches possible. and we're likely to see some

two people are expected in and orange county courtroom charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a one-year- old. authorities said that these two men shot one-year-old maleah williams in chapel hill on christmas. another suspect is facing charges. a dramatic drop pushed the stock market to its lowest point on wednesday. they blame it on the huge drop of crude oil prices. a global surplus of oil is driving that price. safety regulators are looking into hundreds of thousands of ford focus cars. the issue that doors will not latch properly. some doors open while the car was moving. and this covers years 2012 to 2013.

a new report said that the earth temperature break the previous record by .23. that is the second largest yearly jump since record keeping began in 1880. that was fueled in part by el nino and heatwaves, as drought and wild fires. and it is part a troubling trend. >> if you look at the 15 warmest years on record, they have all occurred since 2000. so 15 out of 16 tells you that the planet is warming. and it is due to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. >> and nasa and noah both predict this year will be as warm as last year if not warmer. we want to remind you of some of the schools that are delayed today. they are all two-hour delays. you can keep track of all the winter weather delays over the

plenty of sunshine today and we're going to be dry. it is hard to believe that we'll be tracking a winter storm tomorrow. but that is tip pick lit case of what we see here in -- typically the case of what we see here in north carolina and west area of high pressure in the eastern portions of the country. cold air and lots of moisture. and when they combine, we'll see the perfect setup. and the winter weather starting first and i mean ice and freezing rain and then change into snow before it moves out. not a lot going on where we're watching for the area of low pressure to develop. so in the meantime, plenty of sunshine today from start to finish. and we'll go into the overnight tonight and things start to get interesting for us. say 3:00, 4:00, we'll start to see the snow and wintry mix move into north carolina it continues to increase in coverage and intensity through the morning. so 10:00 a.m., you could be

dealing with freezing rain and sleet across central north carolina and the virginia border. this will be a snow event through the morning. and milder temperatures, not till late in the afternoon. we'll see this change into rain. this is at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. and we'll still be cold enough to see this as a wintry mix. and 7:00 p.m., most tv starting to fall as a cold rain in central north carolina and saturday the cold air starts to rush in behind it. and the big question here, how much moisture is still around? depending on how much moisture will really influence our snowfall totals. ice, you're in the pink area this is raleigh, durham and orange county and chapel hill, a half an inch of ice possible. and that is enough ice to cause damage. and we're talking power outages and power lines down and tree limbs down. and we could see the snowfall totals on top of that one to three inches possible in raleigh. don't necessarily focus on the number.

but the rain so three to five around durham, orange county and percenting county and i would not be surprised if portions of person county saw more than five inches of snow. we're not sure how much moisture is still going to be around for saturday morning. national weather service has issued a winter storm warning in pink and advisories in the areas in blue and these will go into effect at midnight. and the high today, 44 in raleigh, 33 in durham and overnight in the upper 20 and the wintry mix after about 3:00 a.m. and friday and saturday you can see the temperatures right around the mid-30s. that makes this system so tricky. but next monday and tuesday, the 50s will be back. 5:21 on this thursday morning. let's check in with traffic. this is i540 and south sanders street. no slowdowns and not even a lot of cars out there this morning. i want to take you to an alert
