districts operating on a two- hour delay. northampton and across road and north carolina christian school on a two-hour delays. and emma wright is checking out the area roads and details how the d.o.t. plans to keep us safe if you have to get out. in the winter weather tomorrow. first over to meteorologist alyssa corfont for a look at this chilly and now snowy forecast. that's exactly right. a lot it going to change in the coming days this morning. and we're looking at clear conditions. but tomorrow wintry weather could be moving through. so ahead of that a winter storm warning is in effect at midnight for the counties shaded pink. and the areas shaded blue will be under a winter weather advisory. and they go into effect at midnight. and the big picture showing the clear conditions around north carolina, but it is back towards texas that we're watching for an area of low

and move across the gulf states. it will pick up lots of moisture and it moves into our area and colliding with the cold air and we'll see the winter storm. but today, the temperatures, not quite as cold as where they have been. 31 in durham, 31 in goldsboro and at freezing in clinton this morning. so a quick look at your forecast. we'll be above freezing at 38 at lunchtime and 44 for the afternoon high and back into the upper 30s by 6:00 p.m. and this is what i'm thinking for the winter storm that will start aslessly as 3:00 a.m. -- as early as 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and we could get half an inch of ice and then snow as it wraps up tomorrow morning. and it will make travel dangerous from tomorrow through saturday, changes likely in the school system. so we'll watch for those later today. and in the meantime, let's check in with traffic. we'll have more on that forecast in a little bit.

for apple and an destroyed devices. in north carolina, we are not the only ones preparing for a winter storm. >> reporter: through the mid- alantic and north east, people are preparing and for this weekend big snowstorm buying up supplies and watching roads. and wednesday night, drivers in washington d.c. got a taste of what they can expect this weekend. drivers crashed on icy roads and sat in gridlock for hours after a thin layer of snow glazed streets with the ice starting around 7:00, just two days before a blizzard is expected to dumb as much as two feet of snow. in philadelphia, the crews are already out treating the roads with brine. and they say that her prepare for the very worst and getting clouds and salt trucks ready for the weekend in new york and new jersey. shoppers are buying up supplies through the wicked winter weekend ahead.

tomorrow is what we're all watching closely. it is the winter storm that we've been talking about for several days now. 27 degrees and live picture from the power camera. and you see the cars cruising along on the beltline just fine. and the temperatures not as cold as the past mornings. 31 in durham, 31 in goldsboro and at freezing in clinton. so here's your forecast for today. plenty of sunshine from start to finish. 28 at 8:00 a.m. and 38 at noon and the high 44 degrees and well above where we have been the past few days.

winter storm tomorrow. it will be developing across texas, louisiana and it will move across the gulf states today and move into our area tomorrow so plenty of moisture is going to come with it and we have all the cold air in place. so from between 3:00 a.m. on friday and 10:00 p.m. on saturday, that is what we're watching for this winter storm. up to a half an inch of ice possible and then before the system exits, the coldest air rushes in and changing this to snow between one and five inches of snow possible before it is all said and done. it will be a dangerous travel event and watch for changes in your kid's schooling tomorrow as well. i'll give you the update as far as what we're seeing as far as totals coming up in your forecast. so no school for kids in detroit, michigan today. and it is not because of the weather. the teachers are calling a sickout again in protest of the conditions of some of the classrooms that they teach. they say that there's mold,

strengthening today and moving across the gulf states. and that will move into our area. and the track continues to shift further and further south. and this mean that's the colder air will rush into -- means that the colder air will rush into north carolina. and it will start as a wintry mix with snow and ice tomorrow morning. and we could add in some accumulating snow. so let me walk you through what i'm thinking. 9:00 a.m., nothing today. plenty of sunshine. so we'll fast forward through today 5:00, sun setting and clear skies. after midnight, things start to get interesting. i'm seeing, 3 to 5:00 we'll start to see the wintry mix move in. and it will start at snow for some of you. and wintry mix of ice and freezing rain tomorrow. and that is why we're tracking accumulations. and the freezing line the move

and 3:00 p.m., we could still deal with freezing rain and sleet and rain in the south carolina and the sand hills will transition into a cold rain. then the coldest air starts to rush in tomorrow morning. and depending on how much moisture is left, will depend how much moisture we could receive. i think person son county -- person county will receive the most snowfall totals. but a half inch of ice is possible and that includes the triangle. and we have snow to contend with between 1 and 3 inches possible in the blue area and purple area, three to five inches and higher totals in person county and in the sand hills, you'll be dealing with more rain than anything else. the winter storm warning will

this sixty 540 and six forks road. tomorrow morning's commute could be a different story i want to look at some of your drive time. if you're heading northbound into raleigh coming in from the apex area, moving close to the posted speed limit, 15 minutes there. and 17 minute drive on i40 between nc42 and downtown. and 401, about a 20 minute drive from the holly springs area. the governor will hold a news conference in less than 24 hours what could be north carolina's first major winter storm of the year. and they say they're prepared for the ice is and snow on the roads and they are urging everyone else to get prepared. >> reporter: we've been talking with the d.o.t. and they say they've been pretreating the roads in preparation for this storm. and they've been putting down a brine solution that is a salt solution that should help the

there's actually an area of low pressure strengthening across texas and it will move across the gulf states where not a lot is going on this morning and into our area with plenty of moisture as early as tomorrow morning before sunrise. so here's the area of low pressure and how it will be set up tomorrow as we look at an area of high pressure to the north. that will funnel in all the cold air when the two combine, we'll see the chance for the wintry mix early and changing eventually into the possibility for accumulating snow by saturday morning. let me walk you through the changes. future forecast all dry today and we'll breeze on through it. as we head towards friday, before sunrise, say 4:00, 5:00, that is when the wintry weather will move in. so freezing rain and sleet. this is actually going to stick around for the better part of the day. the temperatures continue to trend colder so through lung much time, a wintry mix. here we are at 4:00. and we'll see the rain line
