part of a massive winter storm taking aim at our state and the rest of the east coast. >> and we're just hours away from that storm. we have team coverage preparing you. amy is live on the roads and wes is tracking the storm's path. good evening. >> thanks for joining us. at this hour crew wills basing for a mix of winter weather blast. >> nearly every school in our area is closed in anticipation. you can see them scrolling across the bottom. >> as for the latest on how much snow or ice, we begin with wes. >> we've talked act it all week and it is now thursday night and it is literally on our doorstep, but it is still rain in south carolina as its a little more than 90-miles away from the first counties it'll hit in hoke county. it has already done that up in our mountains and plenty of it.

it, tomorrow will be a miserable day. not a fun snowstorm since we're off school. there's gonna be ice and sleet and rain and snow all mixed in. now, as for our temperatures when that rain gets here, most of us are already below freezing and these numbers will continue to drop. and remember, we've been very cold this week, which when we get a major system, that's one of the things we need so when that first snow flake or ice pet let or rain hits that ground, it's got cold ground to hit so it's gonna stick and cause problems. the there haven't been many chains in -- changes in the area of low pressure. it's all kind of on schedule like we've talked act the past 24 hours. changes to the snow and ice forecast map. between 2 and 4:00 a.m., it'll begin as freezing rain.

most of the triangle, through johnston county and sampson, it begins as freezing run. for some it begins as snow before what i thinking to freezing rain. and between 6 and 8, pretty much everyone northeast of the triangle, you guys in rocky mount all the way up to the virginia border, it'll begin between 6 and 8 as snow and later in the day change over so hereby's the map that has -- changed. two big places it's changed, number one, i think less snow for the sand hills now. so essentially raised that up to one inch line. what we've also done and why this is so incredibly hard, look at the five to ten inch rains, which i know is a big range and a lot of snow. that's come down and we've squeezed this together and that's hard to do, which means you guys could get ten inches,

this time it was gas and the costco station on six forks in raleigh was slammed. some say tailgate took upwards of 30 minutes just to fill their tanks. >> who knows what the weather's gonna be like. could be terrible. >> i grew up in the buffalo area. when you got paid, you filled up the gas tank just for safety. you got stuck some place or in the snow, at least you can keep the motor going and wouldn't freeze to death. >> we're not expecting anything like that. state dot says it's prepared. they've put brine down. they've also got 3200 specially trained employees and hundreds of trucks ready to go. their advice, if you don't have to go out, don't. >> i don't like to take that cans at this point anymore so if you're being told to stay off the road, stay off the road.

out and you feel unsafe or get stuck, pull off the road. if you're blocking traffic or in a lane, you'll need to be called. call your local police department. >> last year i got stuck at the bottom of a hill last year and had to walk back home so that's why i'm not going out. >> i've seen people getting stuck. if there's no help around, the roads are not clean, nothing they can do but leave the car ands start walking. >> another reason store or online stay at home? >> yep, stay at home. >> another reason to stay at home, a live look back here on the roads, the sate dot says it's having employees report to their regular location but they are prepared to move them to the hardest hit areas. they tell us that their focus will be on the primary roads. >> durham county and the bull city gets ready for the snow and ice.

200 flights canceled for tomorrow. american airlines says it'll operate a few early morning departures tomorrow but all other canceled until saturday. delta has also can -- has also canceled flights. they'll be working around the clocks to de-ice the run way ands back up and running. you can check the stat us of your flights using flight tracker on our website go to wncn.com and the link is under the weather tab. amtrak is operating on a modified schedule with the impending storm. the company says if you do have to head out, be ready for delays and allow extra time getting to and from the stations. check with amtrak for the latest if you have to head out. this cold whether brings fire and carbon monoxide dangers.

atmosphere is below top to bottom. what gets tricky is everything in the middle. sleet and freezing rain. like i said, in wake county some point during the day tomorrow, all four of these falling at once. tomorrow i'm worried about the freezing rain. saturday we will have a little bit of snow. take you through the next 48 hours hour by hour. at 3:00 a.m. that's what we expect this mess to start in moore, hoke, and cum berlin. we're gonna be start withing a wintry mix, freezing rain and sleet. by 8:00 a.m. it's hitting most everyone and draw a line through the middle of our area and then we've got the sleet and freezing rain. there's the line still on top of us but notice more rain starts to push up as we get into the afternoon. that's because that area of low pressure bringing the rain is bring frog a warmer climate so it's gonna push that cold air back up.

will turn to a rain but as you can see, there's still some pink and that's been pink for a long time. that's a lot of ice falling and could cause some big problems. as the low pulls out early saturday night here comes the colted rare back down and so everything turns to snow. it'll be light snow saturday morning and as far as going out to play in the snow, that maybe the only time we can do it everyone though there's not gonna blackhillsfox.com a lot falling. -- be a lot falling. we're actually gonna have a pretty decent sunday. so i showed you this. we brought that mostly rain line up a little we brought the five to ten inches down a little so wake county could see anywhere from 1 inch in the southern part to five inches in the non part. you guys along the virginia border could see three to five inches. parts of johnston county a trace to an inch.

i've expanded the half inch remember what the map looked like a couple minutes ago, so western wake county and west and north could see the worst of the ice. a half inch could bring down trees especially with wind. likes i said, a miserable day. windy. temperatures not out of the low 30s. it's gonna prep at a time all day long. snow, sleet, freezing rain and regular rain all day. we wrap up with some snow sunday. we'll warm to 45. we've got 50s next monday and tuesday and those precipitation are rain. cold front that'll drop us back forecast. how often do we say that? lot of people asking, big charlotte's gonna have a mess of weather friday and saturday but if they can recover,
