day ahead of us. we are expecting this wintery weather that's moving in to continue not only through this morning but into the afternoon, into the evening. it should all wrap up tomorrow morning with some light snow expected. here's our satellite and radar composite. i'm looping it over the past two hours. we've been watching this move in just on cue. we said between 2, 4:00 for our south and westernmost communities. that's where it is falling as we speak. let's go ahead and stop this. you can see through the apartment of chatham county that's falling as light snow snow. here at sanford reporting all snow. look at the southern portions of lee county, sleet falling there. moore county, pinehurst, aberdeen you're seeing sleet. fayetteville likely seeing sleet.

will be there shortly. lets talk about the temperatures. this will be crucial in today's forecast. durham and raleigh right at 30 degrees right now. we're not going to see those temperatures move a whole lot. 33 in littlington, 34 in fayetteville. i'm expecting the mildest temperatures around the sandhills. that's why i'm expecting that change over to rain earlier than the rest of us. here's the winter storm until 6 p.m. tomorrow for the majority of central north carolina. it includes the triangle, includes fayetteville, areas to our north. winter weather advisory in effect for a few counties along the 95 corridor. same time frame through 6 p.m. on saturday. as far as your forecast is concerned, snow and ice at 8 this morning. more freezing rain at lunchtime and cold, very windy conditions for us this afternoon. 32 and i think we could see this into a cold rain at 6 p.m. this evening. of course we'll have more expected on the totals coming

i'm going to send it over to kristin who has a check on traffic. no major issues to report on area roadways. we are seeing some frozen precipitation already beginning to fall outside. keep that in mind. you'll want to avoid traveling today if at all possible. nothing popping up as far as your drive conditions go around the area. we are all clear. if we take a live look outside right now you're taking a look at i-40 and jones sausage road. we're currently not seeing any type of wintery precipitation falling, traffic is moving fine in both directions there, and again, we've got no major issues to report. if you do have to travel today keep in mind that some of the roads around the area may be icy. you'll want to leave extra time, extra following distance between you and the cars in front of you. accelerate and decelerate slowly because some of those roads may be slick. you want to avoid quick travel and avoid the roads if at all possible. we'll have more traffic updates

few minutes: let's get a check on what's going outside. justin quesinberry is checking on conditions throughout the area in the wncn mobile news tracker. where are you and what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: good morning kristin, right now we are in fuquay varina near downtown. you see a few little drops of precipitation of some kind on the windshield, just a few there. we started seeing those right at 10 minutes ago. prior to that we weren't seeing anything as we rode around wake county. something is starting to happen here but right no no worries on the road. we want to show you some videos near wake tech's campus in raleigh. staging in a parking lot preparing to head out wherever they're needed in that general area should the snow and ice

some problems for energy customers in the area. that's the big concern as well as the roads. as you can see right now back live here in fuquay-varina, not a lot of traffic at all. we're not seeing any cars at the moment and nothing major sticking to the roads at this point. right now we just have a few drops of rain or snow perhaps on our windshield. that's the latest right now from fuquay-varina. we'll send it back live to you guys. >> justin quesinberry in southern wake county for us. kind of the calm before the storm that's for sure. >> exactly. our team coverage continues of this winter weather. now we're going to go to person county. wright. she's been there all night monitoring conditions. how's it looking so far? >> reporter: so far so good. nothing too exciting happening in person county. we are in rocksboro outside of downtown rocksboro on highway 501. roads are clear on our drive

the d.o.t. in preparation. out here. folks here in rocksboro, though, they are prepared for some big stuff to happen. an urgent care. it's a little hard to see. friday. a lot of businesses here in the area have shut down today in preparation for the weather that they're seeing. when we were driving in here last night we saw the lines at the gas station, they were super long. the lines at the grocery store were long. wal-mart parking lot, it was packed. people hunkered down. we will continue to monitor the situation sheer and we will -- here in and we will bring updates once that snow starts to fall. time now is 4:06. our news team are keeping an eye on the winter storm approaching. here's a live look outside near wake tech's campus near fuquay in the southern part of wake county. keep it right here on wncn for

good morning to you. here in the triangle we're still in our waiting pattern, still going to be moving into the area that wintery weather. we're at 30 degrees. when it moves in, we're talking about ice and snow mixture. here's the big picture. this morning you remember yesterday we were trying to look for that area of low pressure. it's very evident where that moisture is coming from this morning. it's moving in to central north carolina. charlotte already seeing some wintery weather here around central north carolina. i said we're kind of in the waiting pattern. look, it's on our doorstep. southern portions of wake county looking at a few flurries. i'm looking at orange in durham county. you're look ago at north of hillsborough, north of i-40 is where they're seeing light snow. chapel hill a few flurries. you work your way further south. that's where we're looking at slightly milder air which means more of a mixture. it looks like sleet and freezing rain around sanford this morning. as we travel further south we are looking at more of that wintery mix this morning. here's what we're thinking as

here in raleigh, i'm going to point out wake county in particular, southern portions of wake county could receive an inch or two. you travel toward the northern portions toward the airport, r it, p briar creek you're looking at 3 to 5 inches of snow. going through durham and chapel hill as well towards person county, northern portions of granville and mecklenburg county, virginia could see between 5 and 10 inches of snow. ice is going to be a huge concern. the bulls eye of the ice has slid to our west. chapel hill, orange county, durham county, chatham county could receive half an inch of ice. itst also going to be very windy with wind gusts approaching 30 miles an hour. the real threat for power outages, tree branches coming down, power lines as well. right now i'll send it back to stefan. thank you so much.

on the side of the house. no one was injured. right now. a warning this morning when heating your home, this cold monoxide dangers. be careful. last year 50-year-old durham man died due to carbon monoxide poisoning. his family says he was using a generator to warm his house after losing power. now they want to warn you out of the dangers of bringing generators and portable gas heaters inside your home. the cdc says hundreds of people die each and every year due to unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. >> it's scary and it just touched us tremendously because very painful. >> fire officials say you carbon monoxide alarms, and it's also a good time of the batteries. parents listen up if you own a britax infant car seat, the be safe 35 and elite model travel suspects are being

used to the cold and ice, check out this coast guard cutter powering its way through miles of thick ice yesterday. it's an essential task so through with ease. the operation clears away for hundreds of millions of dollars worth of materials to get where they need to go. it looks very cold. >> it does look very cold. is that what we're going to need to get around the triangle today? ship like this. >> we're encouraging everyone to stay home. why venture out if you don't need to. >> we were just talking we had a couple deaths in forsyth county and stokes county. it gets very critical out there. >> it gets very critical and we're already looking at that wintery weather moving in. let's go ahead and take a live look outside this morning. we haven't seen it here at the airport but it's 30 degrees. it is cold enough that when it comes it's not going to come as rain, likely going to start as a sleet and freezing rain. we could see snow mixed in there this morning. of course we'll be watching it

here's our satellite and radar composite. big picture showing a lot of moistutu. that's what we've been talking about for the past several days. this system's going to come in very saturated. as it does it encounters that cold air. that's what we're seeing right now unfold. let me stop this for you. taking you into a closer look here in wake county sleet on western boulevard. we're looking at the airport, not a lot of it reaching the ground. we're not really seeing anything on that camera. likely going to be seeing flurries, sleet mixture there is. south we're seeing milder air this morning. a look at fayetteville under that pink shade, likely dealing with freezing rain. as you move north, cumberland county, spring lake, wade, you're dealing with a sleet mixture there. also portions of lee county, sanford you've been dealing with this wintery weather for the past hour or so. we've been watching it come in. sanford you're likely dealing with freezing rain.

throughout the day. we could be talking about impressive ice totals. we'll get to that in a moment. lets talk about this winter storm warning in effect for nearly the entire area of central north carolina. all of these counties shaded in blue under this winter storm warning through 6 p.m. tomorrow. we also have a winter weather advisory in effect during that same time frame and that's going to be for areas along the 95 corridor. for when all of this precipitation is going to move through and what we're expecting i'm going to turn it over to kristin. good morning alyssa we have a little bit of everything happening around the area right now. going to toss things back to alyssa really quick. >> thanks kristin. looks like some technical difficulties there. let's go ahead and check in with our snowfall forecast for today. expecting 3 to 5 inches of snow and sleet in this area shaded in purple. you'll see this includes very big areas for us. it includes durham, northern positions of raleigh, southern

that's hillsborough. that's chapel hill. further south, southern portions wake county, this is faulk v, holly springs area 1 to 3 inches possible. this area in white, 5 to 10 inches of snow and sleet pox. that's roxboro county, northern portions of granville county and mecklenburg county. we have our crew, emma wright in person isn't. i'm sure she'll be keeping us totals. let's talk about ice. this is going to be critical causing power outages. we all know these temperatures very cold. it's going to be crucial to stay warm. the bulls eye of ice off to our from where we were thinking yesterday, siler industry, chatham county, orange county, person county, a half inch of ice possible. for the majority of wake county, about a quarter inch possible. the ice is only part of the battle because the winds are going to pick up. wind busts could be approaching

that in itself is impressive. combine that with the weight of the snow and ice and it's going to be treacherous. 33 our high in raleigh, 32 in durham. i do expect them to stay at that freezing mark which means they are dealing with sleet, freezing rain, snow for the majority of the day. fayetteville you should reach 36. now with tonight most of this wintery mix is going to taper off. the catch, anything that's left, all of that moisture is going to change over to snow. we're going to be dropping into the upper 20s overnight, and i do think there's that light accumulating snow on saturday morning. saturday afternoon a high of only 35 so don't expect a lot of what we see to actually melt throughout the day. we're into the 40s, plenty of sunshine on sunday, nice melting there, and as we head into early next week. 48 on monday, the 50 are back for next tuesday. it's 4:21. of course the roads going to be slick situation today. for more on that i'll send it to kristin.

crews were out pretreating some of the roads yesterday. we are seeing precipitation beginning just around the area. let's start things off with a live look outside at i-85 at the durham and orange county line there, and you can see there's very light traffic on the road. keep in mind, we are expecting this wintery precipitation to continue all day today. even though those roads were pretreated there may be some very slick spots out there, especially if we get that sleet and freezing rain in the area. here's a live look at your drive. you can see the roads all green around the area. no major issues reported. the wintery weather has just started around the area. we are anticipating slick spots. avoid travel if at all possible across the area today and we'll be back with more weather and traffic updates in just a few minutes. thanks so much. right now the time is 4:22. >> on this friday morning, it

so this winter weather has the potential to disrupt some sporting events this weekend. duke is still scheduled to play against nc state on saturday afternoon. >> unc is scheduled to play at virginia tech in blacksburg virginia on sunday. they're expected to receive more than a foot of snow. the games are still on. the university tells us the decisions are going to be made closer to game time. on the ice last night the canes traveled to toronto in hopes of rebounding from a two- game losing streak. it was a defensive battle. ultimately it took overtime to decide the winner. who better to win it than jr. stahl who's netted a goal in three straight games. as long as both teams can make it into town the canes will host the rangers at 7. let's get to football. the carolina panthers got in a practice session ahead of any icy weather we ghettoed. workers hope the rain, sleet and snow won't do too much

big game. on a positive note the arizona cardinals they're a dome team with only a handful of outdoor cold weather games so far this season. sunday's nfc title matchup kicks off at 6:40. right now this logo is popping all around san francisco. >> the bay city is getting ready for football's biggest game next month. they will host the super bowl on february 27th. a stage where musicians will entertain the crowds. >> this time the first time no roman numerals used. >> isn't that cool? >> yes. we finally know what the super bowl is. >> exactly.
