look at our satellite and radar. looking at some sleet. i know it looks like raleigh. but the reports it is still falling as sleet and it could change into snow as we head through the rest of the morning. and i want to point out southern portions of the raleigh. and we washing our way further south and look at lee county. we have been watching lee county through the morning because you've been seeing the precipitation a little earlier than the rest us. and sleet and freezing rain across the rest of the county and moore county, you're seeing three different types of winter weather right now. and we look at parts of snow across northern portions of the county and middle portions and you work your way into pine hurst and bluff, and the freezing rain is going to be crucial today because we could talk to accumulations and half an inch in the western portions

30 in siler city and durham. above freezing in littleton and fayetteville. between we have the winter storm warning as we speak and it continues to 6:00 p.m. on saturday. and we have a winter weather advisory in effect till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. and we'll look at when that will move through and now over to kristin ketchell. we're seeing a wintry precipitation falling in the area this morning. so you'll want to plan ahead to leave yourself some extra time and be prepared for some slow going. take a look at i540 and glenwood avenue. we have a few reports of sleet

so far, we have had no major issues reported on the area roadways. but if you look at the live road conditions here, we're seeing icy spots starting to pop up in areas where we have seen that wintry precipitation falling for some time this morning. take it slow and avoid traffic if possible today. we'll have more weather and conditions coming up in a few minutes. stay off the roads and stay home if you can. one spot in our viewing area that typically sees a lot of snow is person county. >> that's right, up by the virginia border. and that is where we find write -- emma wright. >> reporter: they are not strangers to snow here in person county. so you know it is cold. and the snow has not moved yet and there's ice on the ground. take a look over here.

the d.o.t. has been out here and you see a car going by right there. still a little slow. but they put brine on the roads to treat the roads. when the snow starts to fall, and this is a secondary road and this is not be treated by the d.o.t., so you want to keep that in mind when it starts to get bad out here. and we get snow and ice and only the major roads have been treated by the d.o.t. and they'll get the sand and salt first so if you have to travel on the smaller roads, and a lot of people do, you want to take it slow and keep that in mind and just stay home if at all possible. no snow yet in person county and we'll monitor the conditions out here and we'll bring you updates through the snow. i'm emma wright, wncn news. dot dot will be busy -- the d.o.t.

>> and justin quesinberry is in the mobile truck this morning. what are conditions like so far where you are? >> reporter: good morning. we're on the move quite a bit in wake county right now. let me show what you i'm looking at right now. this is u.s. 1 in cary. and the road is wet here as sleet started to fall in the area. so far not causing my problems on the roads. but this is very early into the storm and as you know, the conditions can change very fast. so be safe out there. quesinberry. right now, if you are not on the roads or have a flight out, flights through the country and right here at rdu or canceled. take a look at rdu. they say that jetblue and south west have canceled all flights

tomorrow. and they're american airlines will operate a few early morning departures but all other flights are canceled till tomorrow and delta also canceled flights. if you have a flight scheduled today, more than likely it has been canceled most flights are canceled at raleigh-durham international airport. and they are going to deice the runway and get things back up and running as soon as the weather allows. a.m. track working on a modified schedule because of the winter storm. several routes are shut down. and the company said if you have to head out, be ready for delays and allow for extra time getting to and from the stations. check with amtrak if you plan to leave.

this is going to be a big deal. this is a live view from our camera it is hard to see on some of the cameras of the precipitation that is falling. look at our satellite and radar. we were looking at this system in texas and law lieu, hard to see, -- louisiana, hard to see and not the case this morning and it is moving into central north carolina and the western part of the state dealing with the snow and freezing conditions. but look at us here in central portions of north carolina that is all moving into the triangle. we're seeing pink and purple and whihi. and that is an indicater of the winter mix. and you can see the sleet mixing in and showing up on the

area and moving into apex. i want to show you to the west, chatum, look at that the northern portions of chatum are seeing snow right now. and you work your way to siler city, seeing more sleet mix in there and there will be areas like this all day long because the temperatures are going to be hovering close to freezing. so some of you are going to see the snow quickly add up. hillsborough, reporting snow. if it is snowing outside your house, send in a picture. we have e-mail. today. we bummed up the totals. 11:00 last night this is our forecast and we're holding with t one to three inch across southern portions of wake and north earn parts three to five of snow and sleet. and it will make it dangerous. the ice forecast, the areas shaded pink mainly west of raleigh, we're look up half an inch of rice and that includes

and that is great for ski boarders and skiers. you see the temperature hovering at freezing. in raleigh, we're seeing reports of sleet. you cannot see much of it on the airport camera there. but it is out there. and the bill more camera looking a little fuzzy because it is snowing there right now with a temperature of 29 degrees. and the university camera at unc charlotte showing a wintry mix in the area with the temperatures hovering around freezing as well so we'll have more statewide updates and a look at your local forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> and we know that the icy conditions will be a problem for trees and power lines. some workers have come from the southeast to help be ready for the winter storm.

leave your car for a quick trip inside the store. call 911 if you see anything suspicious. durham police are investigating a shooting. they responded to lawson and south roxboro streets around 9:30 last night and took one victim to the hospital and is expected to survive. no word on his name or if they have made any arrests. the bulls eye of this massive winter storm, washington d.c., as much as 24 inches of snow expected there prompting a safety emergency. a snowstorm on wednesday night stranded people for hours. it was enough to shut down traffic. 2,000 volunteers are on standby and thousands of tons of salt are being put on the roads there. maryland's governor has declared a safety emergency ahead of the storm that could dump two feet in some places.

on standby in case of emergencies and they are asking people to clear snow around fire hydrants and keep the snow off the sidewalks. if you don't have to head out the door this morning, please stay inside. 30 degrees right now. this is a live picture from our tower camera. it's going to be hard to see any wintry precipitation just yet till we see some brighter conditions. that is a live picture from where we stand in north raleigh. this the big picture. a lot of moisture with this system and it is barreling into central north carolina as we speak. so i want to bring you into a closer look at home. this is in person county and orange county and wake county and it is transitioning into the sleet mixture and you work your way to the sand hills and more sleet and freezing rain.

neighborhoods. we're getting a report of wet flakes and sleet mixing in. and that is along wade avenue. as we work our way to southern portions of wake county, they are not expected to see as much snow and sleet. holly springs this morning waking up to a little bit of a sleet mixture there and chatum county. we have a report of sleet coming in from siler city. it is sleight the freezing mixture as well. and it looks like a sleet mixture towards fayetteville and hope mills and wade and spring-like as well. and we'll continue to monitor this that's continues to fall through the morning. winter storm warning in effect till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. you see it includes the triangle and sand hills. and that is a winter weather advisory and that is in effect till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow.

neighborhood, i'll send it over to kristin ketchell. we have a mess of wintry weather heading our way today. as we head through this morning, many of us will see a sleet and snow mixture. but in the later parts of this morning, we may see most of that transitioning to all sleet with freezing rain. this afternoon, some of us even into this evening may actually see rain mixing in. so all the frozen precipitation changes to rain later this evening. and once we get through our dinner hours here, after dinnertime, we see the rain pulling out of the area to the northeast changing back to some snow as we head into tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon before all of this wintry weather wraps up in the area. so the timing, we're looking at a good chance for snow, especially further north you are today. possibility. so for a look how much ice and

things back over to meteorologist alyssa corfont. this is a tricky forecast because we're looking a definitive line of where it is rain and freezing rain and that these totals. one to three in the band of blue. and you go to the northern portions of wake county to the possible. and that includes durham, chapel hill, hillsborough, five to ten inches of snow shaded white. and that includes all of person county and orange county and mecklenburg county. up to maybe an inch possible. but i think you're warm enough to see that transition to rain a little earlier. and the ice forecast making today's travel very dangerous. half an inch of ice possible in chatum and western portions of our viewing area.

and the windchill is also critical. it feels like 23 in raleigh. overnight, we see the wintry mix transition to light snow, especially raleigh and north ward. 29 the overnight low. and we're not going to see a lot melt tomorrow. 35. we could see snow accumulations in the morning and 42 on sunday and plenty of sunshine. we will have earned it by then and 48 and sunny skies as we head into next week. 4:53. no major issues to report on the area roads. take a live look outside right now and what you can expect if you have to drive into work today. we're seeing sleet fall in the area. and the roads seem to be fairing okay. and if you look at your traffic map here no issues to report. but we're seeing snowy conditions and also some icy conditions along area roads. so take it slow and take your

we'll be crews in western virginia are ready for the massive snowfall. and the crews are treating roads with a salt and grandfather develop mixture. families are getting much needed help in durham in time for the winter weather. we told you a couple weeks ago about a mom that launched a coat drive after seeing kids at the bus stop without a coat on a freezing morning and she gathered about a hundred new coats. jackie love has set up this room at wg pearson center.

coat, gloves and hats for kids. the need increased 70%. >> this reminds me how great people are and a great city that we live in that people do care about human needs. >> love hopes to have all the coats distributed in the next two weeks and there's a need for new shoes and high green -- high hygiene products as well. in minnesota, people are freezing their clothes in the yard as ice sculptures. one man laughed at the trend said that he saw some froze den pants and the animal got scared and tried to run away. they're frozen. >> someone literally froze their pants off. from the triangle to the sand hills and everywhere in between, we have coverage of this winter storm.
