round and a good time of year to check your alarm batteries charges. this is a large picture of cardinal high school in raleigh. it will be very windy this afternoon and right now we're tracking a wintry mix moving into the area. i'm starting offer with the big picture. you remember yesterday? we don't have the same problem this morning. all of this, plenty of moisture just stream nothing central north carolina as -- streaming into central north carolina as we speak. this is the radar over the past few hours. and you'll notice in the southern portions of our area, moore county and hope county, you've been seeing the precipitation fall for the past several hours right now. so the roadways are starting to get slick. be careful if you have to head out of the right now on our satellite and radar down apex and holly springs, dealing with
5:17 am
and we move off to the north and west and we heard from emma wright. and she's seeing snow. and the satellite and radar dealing with light snow? chapel hill and durham. and further south, look at this. this is cumberland county. we're expecting you to see a transition into rain this afternoon. but right now, you're dealing with sleet and freezing rain, making travel dangerous. spring-like dealing with sleet and freezing rain and frozen precipitation towards fayetteville and hope mills as well. so the winter storm warning in effect till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. and we have a winter weather advisory in the areas off to the east. i'll have more on the accumulations that i'm expecting. i'll send it now to kristin. good morning. we're off to a messy start in the day. and it will get worse as we head through the morning. take a look at your futurecast.
5:18 am
this morning, we have the messy mix of snow and sleet for a lot of locations and that continues through lunchtime. and you'll notice as we head into this afternoon, we get some of the warmer air to push in. so many areas south of the triangle and spots to the east may transition over to a brief period of rain. and tonight, the rain lifts out of here and the back edge of the precipitation swings around into the area once again and we have snow as we head into the overnight hours. and it depends on how much warm air that we have in the higher levels of the atmosphere. but it will be a messy day. for how much ice and snow you can expect, we'll send things back to meteorologist alyssa corfont. we're dealing with warm air and cold air moving into north carolina, the forecast is tricky we have been fine tuning it in the last two days. one to two three in the
5:19 am
north earn portions could see up to five inches of snow and sleet. and that is the same situation for durham and chapel hill. i have to point out this area shaded white. this is northern portions of orange county. and it looks like it is the hillsborough area and person and granville county and five to ten inches of snow and sleet. and not going to be the biggest snow or the biggest ice event. but you combined with windy conditions and the travel is very dangerous today. so this is a bulls eye for ice to the west of raleigh. half an inch possible in those areas. and quarter inch possible for raleigh and area to the south. and i've been talking about the wind and it will strengthen this afternoon. this is the windchill right now. 20 degrees is what it feels like in raleigh and the teens in roxboro. and the high today in raleigh, 33, 32 in durham and 36 in fayetteville.
5:20 am
the wintry mix changing to snow, especially you're north of triangle and we could talk about accumulations there. as we head to tomorrow, we're not expecting much in the way of melting. and i expect melting to take place on sunday. look at 42 and sunny. that will feel nice and more sunshine as we head into early next week and high of 48. we've been telling to you stay off the roadways. but i'm sure a few of have you to get outside. for more, over to kristin. if you have to be outside on the roads today, you'll want to take it slow. leave yourself some extra time and use extra caution. look at i-85 and durham and orange county line. it looks like the traffic is moving a little slower than it was. and we're seeing snow and sleet fall thing. so please, if you can avoid being on the roads, do not drive today. if you have to drive, the commute looking okay this
