we have reports of some sleet falling in cary and apex and holly springs and we're looking for sleet pellets in northern portions of wake county and i want to check in with other portions of the area. we were talking about the crew there. and they are reporting sleet and pellets and also seeing some light snow in pinehurst and pine bluff this morning and let's slide off to portions of cumberland county and sampson and rose borrow. we're seeing freezing rain and still falling as sleet in wade and dunn. and the temperatures are concerned, very crucial in today's forecast. also 28 in lewisberg and 27 in henderson and temperatures are at freezing in fayetteville and clinton. so the freezing rain what that mean it's is falling as rain -- means it is falling as rain and

your car, bridges and mailboxes. factor in the wind, and it feels down right frigid for some of you. 19 in roxboro, 20 in raleigh. winter storm warning in effect. it started at midnight and it continues through 6:00 p.m. tomorrow and we're looking at a winter weather advisory in effect for the same time frame and this will be in effect for a few counties along the 95 corridor. we'll have more totals coming up in your forecast. if you must hit the roadways this morning, we want to keep you safe. good morning. so far roads are actually looking okay around the area. let's take a live look outside right now at what many of you will be seeing on your roads today. if you have to drive into work, things are a little slow going in some spots because we're dealing with snow and sleet and icy conditions possible in the area. as of right now, we have had no major issues reported. but if you take a look at your

have some snow and sleet, which may cause some problems. d.o.t. crews did pretreat some of the roads with brine, but not all of them avoid travel if at all possible today. if you got any pictures send them to wncn.com. we would love to see them. our winter weather coverage continues. and now we'll head to the sand hills. >> people in moore county started seeing the wintry mix first thing this morning. and that is where lauren is this morning. we snow you've seen it all just about. you saw the ice pellets and rain and snowflakes. what else? >> reporter: yes. right now and for quite a while, it has been sleeting here in moore county. we want to talk about your

if you look at the branches, you can tell that the ice is starting to stick this is just a small example of what that concern would be. if the ice continues to fall, and now we have quite ate bit of wind starting to pick up and it will continue that way for quite a long time today. the ice, and wind that could cause the branches to fall. and that is where the cause for concern meaning power outages, damage, anything that you can think of along those lines. so you want to be prepared. make sure that all the devices are charged and we'll keep you up to date again. we're seeing a lot of sleet here in moore county. live in southern pines, wncn now. another spot in our viewing area that typically sees snow is in person county. >> that's right. that is where we find emma wright. she's been there all morning long.

seeing some flurries falling from the sky, not a lot. but enough that it has picked up in the past few minutes or so it is a little bit hard to satisfy right now because of the -- to see right now because of the wind. i pulled you have the weather app. and it is reading 28 degrees in degrees. we've been standing out here for a few minutes and it feels like negative ten. roxboro and person county, they're no stranger to snow. we saw the d.o.t. treating the roads. this is along highway 501. you can see the brine lines on the street. no amount of significant snowfall yet. as of right now the roads are clear. this is a secondary road. it doesn't look like this road has been treated by the d.o.t. so once the snow really starts to fall, you want to keep that in mind when you're out and about driving around the main roads. they will probably be a little

it might be ice. but we got over those just fine and it doesn't seem to be too slick. right now we don't have anything coming down in downtown raleigh. that has not been case elsewhere as we have traveled to apex, northern part of raleigh. and we saw some type of precipitation, depending on what time of the morning it was and where we were. right now in downtown raleigh, not seeing anything coming down so far so good down here. moment's notice. justin quesinberry, wncn news now. if you are on the roads and if you got a flight planned for today, a lot of flights through the country and also right here at rdu are canceled. this is a live look at rdu. quiet.

will operate a few early morning departures. delta is also canceling flights. double-check with rdu and your airline. chances are, more than likely, it has been canceled. >> 2400 flights along the eastern seaboard has been canceled. >> this whether storm is going to cause a lot of headaches for people. hopefully you're able to stay home and off the roads. this massive storm is threatening 80 million americans along the east coast. in washington d.c. they are expecting 30 inches and that will be a record for them.

thanks for your crew up in person county. and let's show you our satellite radar right now. lots of moisture stream nothing central north carolina. i want -- streaming into central north carolina. and i looked at 85 and 77, it looks like a mess. and we have reports of snow in winston-salem and greensboro. and in wake county, we're getting a lot of reports of sleet falling. if you're seeing the pellets and they are bouncing off the hood of your car that sleet falling, apex, holly springs, it looks like sleet and a little wet flakes.

we head further north. and we know it is snowing in person county and chapel hill. back south, south of the triangle, look at this fayetteville, spring-like and rock fish, you're dealing with the frozen mix of sleet and freezing rain. this is goes to cause a lot of problems as people have to get out on the roadways this morning. so here is the snowfall forecast. one to two three inches of snow and sleet across the southern portions of wake county and north earn portions three to five -- northern portions three to five inches. and you folks watching us in person county, and ice on top of all of that making travel difficult. half an inch of ice expected in the area. and that is mainly west of raleigh. and in raleigh, we could still receive about a quarter an inch. and you add in wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour and i think

winter weather. >> reporter: they are dealing with the snow and it is stick together road surfaces this morning. -- sticking to road surfaces this morning. this is in hendersonville, north carolina. you see the downtown area. and the street completely covered with snow. a live look from unc charlotte where it is snowing. we saw some d.o.t. cameras from around the charlotte area showing many roads becoming snow covered in that -- becoming snow covered in that region as well. you cannot see the lights very well because we're seeing snow falling in ashville right now where the current temperature is 29 degrees so many location across the state dealing with the mess of wintry whether. and we'll have more updates coming from around the state and your local forecast coming up in a few minutes. we continue to have your team coverage when it comes to the winter storm that will be

and we've been following wncn's emma wright. it looks like she's seeing snow. >> you said that you saw some flakes and we saw them on our live shot. it looks like it is coming down harder? >> reporter: it picked up significantly in the past few minutes. we saw the snow start to sprinkle around 4:30 this morning. and an hour or so later it is really starting to come down and the flakes are thick and with the wind blowing, it is uncomfortable. we have not seen it pile up on the roads at all. if you're out and about, we're starting to see some more cars out here. you want to be careful. it only takes a little bit of snow over ice to make for treacherous driving conditions. and we came up here last night and because it's been so called in person county, there was a little bit of ice on the roads. and it snuck up on you, hence

so keep that in mind. again, some snow in roxboro and we'lling out here monitoring the snow conditions and we'll see you for another update in a few minutes. emma wright, wncn. >> we knew eventually you would see the flakes. the bulls eye of this massive winter storm is washington d.c. as much as 24 inches of snow expected there. a snow shower wednesday night in washington d.c. stranded drivers on the highways for hours. the city and the surrounding areas getting less than an inch of snow. and 2,000 volunteers are on standby now and thousands of tons of salt are ready to be put down on the roads. they'll need item there. a traffic jam for sure. hopefully we will not have that in the triangle. >> i hope a lot of people are not going to be on the roads today. we have been urging people to stay at home as we start to see

is in raleigh. and we're not seeing a loot from the camera there. -- a lot from the camera there. look at the flags blowing around in the breeze. that is another element in today's forecast. and the wind gusts could be close to 30, 35 miles an hour. and that will be enough to bring down the tree limbs, especially once they are coated in ice. and here is the satellite and the radar. you notice in the past few hours, it has really been coming down for you, especially south and west of the triangle. and these are the areas to see the precipitation move in first. and in wake county it has been a struggle. and we saw a few sleet pellets in our north raleigh studios. and the latest report is this is still sleet and maybe flakes mitching in around holly springs. and the latest report from hillsborough. they are seeing snow pretty similar to what emma just reported on. and as we see the intensity pick up in the morning, the roads are certainly going to

so as far as the conditions in cumberland county, we're looking at fayetteville and wade and all the others in cumberland starting to see the sleet and freezing rain mixture. this is something that we've been monitoring through the morning. so the winter storm warning remains in effect through the day today and 6:00 p.m. tomorrow and we're expecting the changeover to possibly cold rain and snow before this system is all said and done. and we have this winter weather advisory along the 95 corridor through 6:00 p.m. tomorrow as well. for more on the timing of when the switchover will occur, i'll send it over to kristin ketchell. good morning. many of us dealing with some sleet and snow right now. and that will be the case through the this morning through most of central north carolina. let's break things down on our futurecast. you can see the darker blues and the heavier snow this morning, especially if you're north of i40 and i-85,

bursts of snow there and sleet mixing in around the triangle. and later this afternoon and into this evening, as we get a surge of warmer air from the south, we may briefly change over for some spots to a very cold rain. before we start to see some of the wintry weather continuing here and eventually switching back over to snow. overnight tonight and through tomorrow before the precipitation completely wraps up. and a big difference between snow, sleet and freezing rain it depends on how much warm air moves in and what most of us are seeing right now or sleet pellets and that's when there is a little bit of warm air at the high levels of atmosphere ice. pellets. morning. for a look how much ice and snow to expect, back over to meteorologist alyssa corfont. because we are expectinin the changeover, the pinpoint. and we're watching the forecast evolve as it starts to happen. but between three inches of snow and sleet across the

county and look to the northern -- northern portions of wake county and orange county and person county and northern portions of granville and into virginia could receive five to ten inches of snow and sleet. and it will be dangerous to travel. don't head out if you don't have to. half an inch possible. and the windchill this morning, this is what you need to dress for. 20 degrees in raleigh. 19 is what it feels like in roxboro and the forecast, 33 the high in raleigh, 32 in durham and 36 in fayetteville. overnight tonight, the wintry mix changing into snow as e temperatures fall into the upper 20s and here's a look at the coming days. and tomorrow not much in the way of melting high of 35.

with high of 42 and sunny. and 48 the high on monday. and we've been urging people to stay at home. and it seems like they are listening to us. with an update on traffic, i'll send it over to kristin. no major issues reported. a lot of people staying off the roads. and the current road conditions at i40 and aviation parkway, traffic moving a little slower than normal that is a good thing. if you have to be on the roads, plan ahead for that you'll run into spots that are on the icy side. and let's switch over to the traffic map here. and the live road conditions, we're dealing with snow and ice in many locations, this is mostly southst triangle. and we're seeing some of the roads becoming a little icy. so we'll keep you updated. police stay safe on (vo) what's your dog food's first ingredient? corn?
