and let's check in with meteorologist alyssa corfont. and we have activity across the state. yes. we've been watching this wintery weather moving in. so if you have to head out the door this morning, know that is what you're going to start to encounter and flakes flying in person county and roxboro and hillsborough this morning and then we have milder air down to the south and that means a frozen mixture that no one needs to deal with. so here is a closer look right now at wake county. you can see the airport under the shade of white and mooresville and cary and the crew is driving around wade avenue and they are league is in as well. west. that is where we're seeing the reports of snow and roxboro and person county and chapel hill as well. and we're expecting the intensity of the precipitation to increase through the morning

falls, the faster the road deteriorate. here's cumberland county and that is where we're seeing a lot of freezing rain fall from stedman. and that extends off to the east of cumberland county and rose borrow and clinton in sampson county. and these will be crucial for today's forecast. 28 in durham and 29 in raleigh, 32 so at freezing in clay tonight you factor in the wind and it will feel colder and it feels more like 20 in raleigh and durham so getting to the winter storm warning, this in effect now to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. and we're looking at several inches of snow and sleet possible and a winter weather advisory off to the east around the i-95 corridor and this extends till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. and we'll get more on the expected accumulations on snow and ice. but now over to kristin

>> good morning. so far no major issues to report on your area roads that is the good news, but we're there. take a live look outside at i40 and jones sausage road that is a good thing. we're seeing that icy mix of precipitation falling around the area and that will make even some of the pretreated roads very slick this morning. and take a look at your traffic map. you can see, once we get it up here that we're dealing with the snow and ice in many locations here. not too much issues reported on major roads in and around the triangle. and we're keeping a close look on the sand hills. this is where you'll see the icy conditions south of the triangle as the sleet and freezing rain continues. we'll have more updates coming up in a few minutes. justin quesinberry is checking on road conditions through the

where are you now and what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning. right now we're on wade avenue in raleigh. right near 440 here. you can see what we're seeing right now. we're seeing some big flames come down -- flakes come down. they're frew and far between but we're also hearing sleet coming down on the windshield. so a little mitch tour in terms -- mixture in terms of what we're seeing falling right now. sometimes we're seeing wet conditions on the roads as we travel around wake county. it depends on where you are in terms of what you're seeing. we'll tell what you to expect if you have to to be out and about. justin quesinberry, wncn. we continue our winter weather coverage and now to the sand hills. >> the winter mix hit our viewers in moore county this

you saw it first what are you seeing now? >> reporter: we're seeing sleet mixing with rain. i want to show you what has been falling all morning. you can see all of this sleet. it's been here a lot of pellets and sleet. this block of wood, nothing but ice so if we were to step on, it is slick. the road is the next concern. now that it is sleeting it is cold and starting to pick up on the wind. what we want to be concerned with is we're driving out here and black ice. we're seeing sleet, kind of a break. but it is not the end of this winter storm here. so sleeting here in moore county and we'll continue to update you on the road conditions and even power outages if that becomes a concern later on in the day. thanks for the update.

roads, the state d.o.t. said it spent the last few days preparing a salt water brine. and they have their employees working 12 hour shifts today. hundreds of trucks are ready to go and people are preparing at this gas station. take a look at this six forks road in raleigh. it took upwards of 30 minutes just to fill up their tank. >> who knows what the weather is going to be like. thought i would tank up in case. >> last year i got stuck at the bottom of the hill last year and i had to walk back home. that is why i'm not going out. >> probably a good idea. if you do venture out. you should pull your car off the road. if you're in the road or blocking traffic, you'll be towed. and they tell us that you should call your local police department. >> i like what the last guy said, stay home. we've been showing you the widespread school cancellations. the staff at east wake academy

currently 28 degrees here in raleigh. so let's check in with the satellite and the radar. we've been dealing with the wintry weather during that time frame. and i want to bring you into a closer look. and we have a report of light snow at rdu and durham and chapel hill all in the shade of white indicating some light rain. and we just got a report in from goldsboro it is sleet thing. and we slide to cumberland county. it has been fluctuating from sleet and freezing rain. fayetteville, knowing that you've been dealing with the conditions for the past hour, i'm sure the bridges and the overpasses, the area roads are

so really stay home if you can today. spring-like dealing with similar conditions and the icing occurring and hope mill as long 95 as well. so let's talk about the snow forecast. and we were talking about the temperatures, hard to pinpoint where the snow, freezing line and eventually rain line will be. but here's what we're thinking, one to three inches of snow and sleet across the southern portions of wake county. but look at this tight temperature gradient of snow totals. northern portions of wake county could receive three to five inches. person county and northern portions of orange county five to ten inches. for us. so you need to add ice and wind into this. this is the bulls eye for ice going to be to the west. a half inch expect in the areas shaded pink. and that includes durham and orange county. and we'll talk about the totals and the times of this event coming up in your complete forecast. thank you for tracking it.

ridge road in raleigh. county. >> that's right. that is where we find emma wright tracking the storm. she has been there all night monitoring the conditions and checking it out for us. what is new so far? >> reporter: we're outside of downtown roxboro and the snow is starting to fall. and we saw the first few flakes at 4:30 and an hour and a half later, it is really coming down. it is blowing in a side way direction. this is highway 501. and the d.o.t. has been out here before the snow really covered this and we saw the brine line and they road. but it only took a few minutes covered. if you want to look over here, that is the main road. and that is the road that the d.o.t. treats. roads. and this is covered with snow. you cannot even see the lines on it anymore.

want to keep in mind that the roads, they could be dicey, even though it has only been snowing for a few minutes. and there's ice under the snow. and not a lot. but roxboro has been so cold for the past few days, there has not been any time for anything to melt. so black ice and a little snow on top of it and that makes for some slick conditions. we'll bring you another update in just a few minutes. i'm emma wright, wncn news. we have breaking news out the fayetteville where a family is out of their home because of an early morning fire on candle wood road. they saw flames up on the side of the house. no one injured. an investigation to the cause of the fire underway right now. a warning when it comes to eating your own home, the -- heating your own home, the cold weather brings carbon monoxide dangers. so we want to warning about you

you have milder air and that is ice currently falling around the sand hills. we'll start towards the virginia border and work our way down. this is person county that we saw from emma wright. there is snow falling steady this there and snow falling in hillsborough and we make your way to raleigh and wake county and we're seeing light snowfall around the innerbelt line and it is falling on rdu and cary and apex. a little sleet mixed in there from time to time. and we see more sleet mixed in further south and littleton seeing some of the snow and anderson creek dealing with snow and sleet. and then we make our way to cumberland and sampson counties. and we have reports of sleet and freezing rain happening right now around clinton and rows borrow and -- roseborrow.

effect till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow and it includes the sand hills and the triangle and the areas to the north as well. and we have the winter weather advisory for a few counties through 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. for more on the time frame we're watching, i'll send it over to kristin. good morning. we're dealing with a mix of wintry weather right now. so let's break things down a little bit and step you through the day here. we're going see the mixture of sleet and freezing rain and snow continue through this morning and early this afternoon. eventually, the later that we head into the day today, we have the push of warmer air that may briefly change the frozen precipitation for some parts of the area to a cold rain. and eventually, as we head through tonight, the rain pulls out of here and the snows returns to the forecast for the overnight hours and early tomorrow morning. for a look at how much ice and snow to expect, let's send things over to meteorologist alyssa corfont.

and exactly where the mild air will set up. this is in the southern portions of wake county. one to two three inches of snow and sleet and you head to the northern inches, we're into the three and five inch band and durham and orange county and the eastern portions of mecklenburg county. persons and wake, five to ten inches of snow and sleet. it will not be the biggest snow event for us. but combined with the ice, it will be an icy mess for us. the windchills in the teens. the winds will be a big factor for us. 16 in raleigh. 33 the high today in raleigh, and 36 in fayetteville and we head to tonight and the wintry mix changes to accumulating snow, 29 degrees the overnight low. and not expecting much in the way of melting tomorrow. 35. we'll see the 40s with some sun on sunday. and more 40s or here for early next week.

today. and kristin you have the update on traffic. we have some updates in the crew of snow in wake county and emma wright in person county reporting snow stick thing. this is i40 and aviation parkway. and we're seeing traffic moving. it is a little slower than normal. at a is she out there this morning. and we're seeing snowy conditions in and around wake county and the triangle and south of the triangle is where we're dealing with the sleet and freezing rain so the ice could be an issue this morning. take it slow and leave extra time and aroid travel if at all

we're getting a report of snow. and the governor announced a state of emergency yesterday. and hundreds of schools and businesses closed. and we have team coverage as well and the closings streaming at the bottom of the screen. and kristin ketchell is checking out the road conditions and emma wright in person county. let's get over to meteorologist alyssa corfont for the latest. here's the satellite and radar. the snow is falling around the triangle. and we have a report of it starting to stick in clayton here in raleigh and up to person county where we see our emma wright. we're seeing the big flakes falling. and the milder air making this of a sleet and freezing rain mixture. and the combination of this going to make it dangerous to travel. if you don't have to go outside, police stay inside.

flakes and down to clayton, and we have a report of snow starting to stick. they've been dealing with the snow and we work our way further south. and look at this. this is harnett county. the northern portions of the county cold must have to see the snow. and we make our way further south and johnsonville and anderson creek. we're at 27 degrees so if you've been keeping track this is the coldest it's been this morning. in raleigh, durham and henderson 27 and 24 in roxboro. windchill at 16 in durham and raleigh. as we start to see the accumulations and the winds start to gust, power outages, tree limbs coming down and that will be a real concern for us. and the winter storm warning

tomorrow and that includes fayetteville and areas along the virginia border. and there's a winter weather corridor. we'll break down what we're expecting as far as totals are concerned and the timing of this winter storm coming up in your forecast. right now, let's send it over to kristin ketchell with an update on the roadways. good morning. if you have to travel today, plan ahead to leave yourself a lot of extra time and use some caution. roads right now. and you can see on many roads around the area, we are seeing snow coming down like this this is i-85 and u.s. 70 where the snow is actually starting to stick so please take it slow. watch for icy spots and black ice. the live road conditions, we're dealing with the snow beginning to cover many roads in the triangle. and south of the triangle across the sand hills that is

ice issues there. take it slow. do not travel if at all possible. so one spot in our viewing area that is no stranger to snow and ice is person county. they know the snow well. and that is where we find emma wright. she has been there all night long monitoring the condition. how is it looking now, emma? >> reporter: the snow picked up in the past ten minutes or so and now it is an icy snow. flakes. when the wind blows and hits you in the face, it actually hurts a little bit. take a look at this. the roads were covered but not as covers like they are now. they are a little fluffy and cars have not been driving on this over there is highway 501 and the morning mute has picked up a bit. but even the cars driving on

as we've been saying, person county, roxboro, they are no stranger to snow. they took the measures yesterday and shut down. you see the urgent care, the sign flashing, they are closed today. they are bracing for the snow like a lot of businesses in the area. if you have to be out and about, take it slow. i'm emma wright, wncn news. thank you. one of the biggest problems associated with this winter weather will be the road conditions. >> justin quesinberry knows about that. and he is in our mobile news tracker. we know you've been all over wake, apex. where are you now and what are you seeing? >> reporter: we're in raleigh right now near crabtree valley mall and glenwood. when i was with you about a half hour ago, one of the last

the forecasters say it will continue through late saturday. a state of emergency has been in effect in virginia since late yesterday. local emergency management teams are preparing for a record snowfall and in some areas, as many as 30 inches. and that is expected to cripple roadways and pretty much everything going on in the area. 500 vehicles, part of the road treatment team has been out since yesterday and they are trying to keep things as clean as they can. but stay off the roads unless you absolutely must be there once the snow starts here. and the national weather service is calling for blizzard and whiteout cans here and brutally high winds and the record snowfall is going to cause some problems here. and we're on the leading edge of a storm that could affect as many 80 million people across the east coast here, just the beginning of what is going to be a very rough weekend that is the latest from here in

if you're trying to escape to warmer weather, well, bad news. flights through the country and rdu canceled. we're taking a live look at rdu where the officials say that more than 200 flights have been canceled and that includes jetblue and southwest. they have canceled all flights scheduled for today and tomorrow. the crews have pretreated runways and tax y ways overnight. but the goal is to keep one runway open at all times. all other departures are canceled. double-check with your airline. the massive winter storm that we're dealing with is threatening more than just news the triangle. 80million american as along the east coast. >> up in washington, they're expecting as much as 30 inches of snow. that will be the first time since 1922. so as we head to break, when we come back, we'll let you know what other parts of the country are dealing with. and we're watching the snow

we're starting to see the snow covered roads in raleigh. and that is wake county. and you can see nearly the entire county seeing some sort of snow, whether a the big flakes falling slowly or moderate pace and we're looking at that bright are shade in wake forest and durham and cary. some steadier snow towards chapel hill and hillsborough. and the northern portions of orange county before this is all said and done could receive five to ten inches of snow and sleet. and we work our way down across the southeastern portions of our viewing area. and we got a report of goldsboro and wilson that the bridges and overpasses are starting to glaze over because they are receiving sleet, loss a -- also a lot of sleet and freezing rain.

forecast between 1 and 3 inches of snow south of raleigh that is southern portions of wake county and northern portions of wake county, three to five inches. and that includes durham and southern portions of orange county and it extends up in the purple band, virginia, that is five to ten inches. and couple that with the ice that we're expecting this could be a significant event for us. half an inch for us shaded the pink. in raleigh, about a quarter an inch of ice expected. more on the timing and when we'll finally get it out of here in the pleat forecast. -- complete forecast. tree removal crews have been busy. managers at arbor max tree service said they've been getting five times as many cars in the last couple days than they usually do. some homeowners were trying to get trees taken down before they fall down. they are expecting a lot of problems because of the ice and snow.

and we got a lot of reports from the mountains. this is bryson city. definitely seeing some snow on the ground there and roads starting to get a little slick. and moving east, the next camera view, it will be from belmont west of the charlotte, check that out. there. they got a good dusting of snow there and more snow is falling and is expected to fall in many locations around the tar heel state. if we switch to another live camera here, we got this i40 live in greensboro. that is i 40 right there. but the know is starting to stick in some spots. and one more here from hendersonville just south of ashville. that is the downtown area there. there is packed snow on the road. treacherous driving in some spots. and we'll have more updates on your statewide weather and a

back at homecoming up in a few minutes. i've been following the social media from across the state, charlotte, greensboro and ashville, all seeing some accumulating of snow. >> no one is immune. >> it will be a big one. we continue our winter storm this morning. >> people in the sand hills started to see the wintry mix first thing this morning. and lauren has seen a lot of it. far? >> reporter: like you said, we had seen a lot this morning. and now we're transitioning into freezing rain. i'll tell you why this can be a problem. as you can see it is starting branches. this is a small example from what we're seeing in moore and the heaviness of the ice whether it be on the tree limbs, branches or power lines, this is where it can cause a problem. it can start to fall and get

that can cause power outages. and i want it talk about another concern. it is extremely cold out here. so the roads that we're seeing are extremely wet at this point. we don't see any trucks out here. but i'm sure they've been working extremely hard. anything that might have been on the road previously may have melted. and this can cause freezing as well. if you have to get out at all, especially right here in moore county or across the triangle, you need to be careful and watch out for black ice. so several concerns that we're seeing here in moore county, live in southern pines. in the weather center with meteorologist alyssa corfont. it's been a busy morning. we saw here in moore county. and we had the great live shot of i-85 and 70 we're starting to see the accumulations.

to deal with and then the freezing rain and ice. this is the live picture from the raleigh-durham international airport. you see the moisture clementing on the lens out -- collecting on the lens out there. and if you look close to the terminal, you can see some of the snow accumulating on the tarmac this morning. so let's go ahead and get to our satellite and radar. 6:30, we've been dealing with this round of wintry weather since 2:00, 3:00, most tv falling as snow for -- most of it falling as snow for us. and you make your way further south and that is sleet and freezing rain. i'll start you north and we'll work our way south. but, you can see is granville and vance counties towards oxford and henderson and we're looking at snow showers this morning along 85. so i'm expecting 85 to be a little slick at this point in time as they continute to see the snow. in wake county towards the airport and cary and apex and holly springs, likely seeing a steadier snow shower.

county and fayetteville and spring, you're dealing with the sleet and freezing rain. you'll see the bridges and overpasses glaze overpasses first. this is along 795. and that is in the north earn portions of wayne county. and we have the winter storm warning in effect till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow for all the counties shaded blue. i'll have more on your totals in a moment. let's go over to kristin ketchell. we'll see the rain and freezing rain change over to snow. and the wintry precipitation continues. and many of us dealing with the icy mix of snow.

dedeer your through deteriorate today. and overnight tonight, the rain pulls out of the area. and cold air wraps back around to the region and we'll see some snow by tomorrow morning with additional accumulations likely. speaking of the accumulations, let's find out how much from meteorologist alyssa corfont. we have had a low of issues fine tuning the conditions in the past few days because it depends on who receives more freezing rain and who receives more snow. three to five inches in the northern portions of wake county and a big spread in expectation across wake county and you head to durham and granville and vance, orange county, three to five inches and five to ten around person county and portions of mecklenburg county and northern portions of orange county. south of the triangle, not expected to be as big of an event but the ice will make

moore county it is freezing rain there. this is pretty much where the bulls eye is. the winds are going gradually pick up through the day and the gusts 35 miles an hour and make it feel colder this morning. and it feels like 14 in roxboro and 17 in durham and raleigh. the high 33 in raleigh and staying at freezing in durham. and overnight, the went try mix changing to snow as the temperatures fall into the upper 20s. sunshine is back on sunday where we should see amendmenting with a -- see some melting with a high of 42. 48 into early next week on monday. but we're talking about snow starting to accumulate on the roadways. i'm sure it will be a nasty commute. and now over to kristin. if you have to drive today, leave yourself extra time and

we're starting to see the roads in the area become snow covered. this is a live look at i40 and aviation parkway you see the d.o.t. truck just passed by the camera they are continuing to treat the roads. but some roads are becoming snow covered. so let's switch things to your maps here. and we have one incident to tell you about and that is near benson on i-95 northbound at exit 81. that is the exit for i40. there's an accident that is tying up traffic along i-95 and that is most likely due to slick conditions there. and we have snow covering the roads around the triangle south of the triangle. we're starting to see many roads glazing over right now. so if you have to drive, again, leave extra distance between you and the cars in front you. so please take it slow. more weather and traffic coming up in a few minutes. we're helping you prepare. shoveling snow is something that we don't like to do.
