7:00 am
we got you covered. kristin ketchell is in the house monitoring the road conditions as well. meteorologist alyssa corfont. we know that the ice and wind and snow and what a mix. >> that is the problem. it is the mix of all of those. we can not see clear. but it did not look like -- we cannot see clearly. but it did not accumulate there yet. but it is on our lens at the preston country club in cary. and we saw the snow during the time frame here in wake county through the triangle through durham and orange county and off to the south.
7:01 am
and pink that is sleet and freezing rain. let's take a tour of our radar. you see it really coming down in person county. and emma wright is in the field. and moving to granville and 15 towards oxford and off towards vance county and hender soon and i'll bring -- henderson. and i'll bring you into wake county and we're seeing the snow accumulate on the roadways. it is very slick as you head out and downtown as well. i'm going to slide you off to the east. on 795 and wilson and towards golds better row, we're getting -- goldsboro we're getting sleet own bridges on overpasses.
7:02 am
some snow flurries. so visibility is a concern and it will be hard to see the ice and the bridges and the overpasses freeze first. don't accelerate. looking at littleton, snow is heading a little south in anderson creek. and it looks like it is a come been nation of the sleet and snow towards sanford and we're also talking about cumberland county. almost the entire county is shaded purple and pink. and that means that ice is a huge concern in the sand hills. clinton and tailors bridge, all of you seeing the shades of purple and pink. and that is the concern for the ice. we'll start at a climb this
7:03 am
is a freezing. we'll point out the freezing conditions in the fayetteville and clinton area. and it is rain and freezing on impact. mailboxes, street signs and bridges and overpasses, you'll start to see the isaac he wills form. -- ice sickles start to form. 19 in fayetteville and 14 in roxboro and durham. and the winds will continue to pick up today. as they do the ice and snow covered tree limbs, those will start to break and power outages will be a real threat for us as well so here is the winter storm warning. this went into effect at midnight and continues to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. you see all the places in blue involved in the winter storm warning. and this is dow jones and --
7:04 am
and snow and ice out there this morning. and 28 degrees at 8:00 a.m. and lunchtime, i think we're precipitation. so around 30 degrees in the triangle and could be close to 32 at 3:00. and you see 3 2, 33, and we're looking at that big question mark. will raleigh see cold rain? we'll monitoring that closely you'll have all of our meteorologists through the day keeping you up to day. and we're monitoring the roads and they are getting snow covered. so what is the latest? in the last hour, we saw roads go from okay to awful in many locations. take a live view from our cameras outside. you got the cold they're goes above and the cold they're goes underneath and that causes anything on the surface to freeze a lot faster. so let's go ahead and switch
7:05 am
a look at another one. this is trinity road and edward mill road. these are the streets that are going to see likely the iciest and have the biggest issues there because they were not treated as well major thoroughfares. you want to take your time before you turn corners. and that is i40 and aviation parkway where we're seeing traffic actually moving okay right now. you can see the roads are mainly wet. but the snow is starting to collect on the sides of the roads. so the shoulders are going to be injure slickest pots -- your slickist spots on your major roads currently. and this is i40 and miami boulevard. a lot of snow on all lanes there. take it from me, if you do not
7:06 am
enjoy the snow enjoy the wintry weather. don't risk it if you don't have to be outside. and let's take a look at some of our traffic maps. we have some issues that we want to talk about this morning. and we have an accident on i495 and rodgers lane. that is tying up traffic back through knightdale and things back in win dell as well. and we have another accident on i-95 northbound exit 81 where 40 solicit off and you can see the yellows there indicating that that accident is slowing down traffic on the northbound side. so you'll want to take it extra slow. we have snowy conditions on the roads and a lot of ice, especially for the overpasses starting to show up in the area too. mainly south of the triangle and we have been seeing sleet and freezing rain all morning that is the biggest problems are. so stay off the roads if at all possible. if you have to travel today,
7:07 am
do not accelerate or desell rate. we have a lot -- deaccelerate. we have a lot of slick spots. if you can stay off the roads that is the place to be. stay off the roads if at all possible. when meteorologist alyssa corfont tells us that the rain is freezing on impact, that is a dangerous situation. >> we have the second largest country. inside. >> that is a good point. and now we'll head northwest of the triangle person county and we'll head up to roxboro where we find emma wright. she's been there all morning
7:08 am
>> reporter: it is time for the hat. and the snow has been coming down harder and harder in the past few hours. and now we're seeing big fluffy flakes. they are calling five to eight inches in person county and we're nowhere near that yet. but there's a good dusting on the ground. and there that fine crystalized snow. walk with me this way. we'll show what you the roads are looking like here. and a few car out and about. most people driving slowly a taking their time out here and a took a quick trip to the gas station a few minutes ago. i went about a half mile. but i've been driving is a little bit. it wasn't too bad and it didn't seem too icy. but twt snow and the freeze -- but with the snow and the
7:09 am
cannot be too careful. there was a good bit of snow here. we saw them earlier. and the brine lines. they pretreated t pretreated t but it snow -- pretreated it. but it snowed so quickly. and there's an urgent care across the street and there's a sign flashing, closed friday. and a couple businesses along the stretch closed. schools closed. you should not be out and about. if you have to, take it slow. we'll be monitoring the conditions in roxboro and we'll bring you more updates later on in the show emma wright, wncn news. she just mentioned all the businesses that are shut down. and we have a full list of closures, including for schools. >> that's right.
7:10 am
social media sites because we're updating those through the morning and we have crews across the triangle and up there by the virginia border where emma is this morning. we continue our winter weather coverage in the sand hills now. people in moore county started seeing the mix first thing this morning. lauren is there this morning. you've been seeing a lot of stuff out there, the rain and the snow antifreezing ice. -- and the freezing ice out there. what else are you seeing? >> reporter: you need to be covered up in this kind of weather. look at the roadways. starting to get slushy parts. it is not on the main parts of the road. but that does not mean there is not a problem. they don't seem to be having any problems.
7:11 am
we're in southern pines. but there all could be a slick spot. i was walk in the near parking lot and it was slippery because it was untreated. so it is hard to tell if the roads are treated or not. but none of the drivers seem to be having any problems. just stay off the roads. and the other cause of concern that we have the sleet or the freezing rain is how heavy it could impact the power lines. make sure that your
7:12 am
we're in southern pines, wncn news now. you can stream us 24 hours a day on our news app and the weather app, just a great resource. one of the biggest problems associated with the winter weather is the road conditions. >> and justin quesinberry is in the mobile news tracker. where are you now and what are you seeing? >> reporter: we're in downtown raleigh. and we're seeing some sleet and snow. but right now all of that precipitation has kind of slacked off. and that is a live look at what i'm looking at. you see the roads are slick in downtown raleigh.
7:13 am
the hood. towing companies will remove abandoned cars. but abandoned cars that are safely off the roads will not immediately be towed. if you are within a city limit when you get stuck, you can check with your town or city. this snow just started to stick an hour ago. and the conditions have changed through the morning as we've been driving around. you can see a realtime timeline of changing conditions through the morning. if you take a look at my twitter account at justin quesinberry on twitter, you can see where we have been through the morning. and we started out with nothing on the roads. so we will keep you updated through the morning on line and on here on tv. news now. he made a great point and we were checking in with the
7:14 am
7:16 am
morning at the emergency operation center. us. and a lot of us are inside and listening. so we're not quite clear what is going on the roadways. but your people do. are you seeing a number of crashes on the roadways so far? >> since midnight in the greater triangle area, we only responded to fives collisions that is low. but as you know, probably 5:00 a.m. this morning through johnson county into wake county, during that period of time, the precipitation had started to fax no accumulation but that has since changed. we realize now what is going to happen as we continue to go through the morning hours and into the afternoon hours that the road conditions will really change and they are changing as we speak.
7:17 am
don't have to go out, stay at home, then do so. what we're going to start to see on our end is basically increase of motor vehicle collisions and people slicking and sliding, particularly on the overpasses and ramps. we're getting into the brunt of the storm. but we're hoping for the best. >> lieutenant, we heard the cornell talk with the governor ready and dialing 511 instead of 911. why is that so important as you guys continue to respond? because you know the accidents are going to go on the uptick as the storm develops. >> we do that for several purposes. they like to have roadway information and the first place they usually call is 911. we want to keep the lines open for emergency calls only. so the 511 allows people to
7:18 am
they can see what the roads are and maybe trial. and we'll keep the line of communication open. and we know that the call volumes will increase substantially in the next couple hours. one of the things that we'll be doing is assisting law enforcement actions and the national guard and check on abandoned vehicles and stranded motorists. yesterday. we want to make sure that nobody is left on the side of the road, particularly this type of weather with the temperature dropping and the freezing precipitation so that is one of the things that we're going to do and check the vehicles. we'll make sure that nobody is left b@hind. >> and we know your folk have been doing a great job of advising people all morning long to stay home and stay off the roads if at all possible. and the governor doing the same thing. but we have a lot of viewers
7:19 am
so with that in mind, do you ever any safety tips that you can give to our viewers this morning? >> yes. we tell people decrease your speed. wear your seatbelt. be very cautious, particularly on the places that you have to apply the brakes like ramp as overpasses. they slept slick in a heartbeat. >> thank you very much for joining us and keeping us update right here and we hope all of your guys stay safe and
7:20 am
they patrol the roads force. if you're just waking up with us, our wncn coverage is extended to bring you updates on the weather and the traffic conditions out there. the "today" show can be scene on our sister channel, 17.2 and also on time warner cable 1245. but the big story of the day is the weather. >> what is what everyone is talking about tell us more about this triple threat that we're fashion. >> thank you. thankfully we have kristin ketchell in here too. let's start olive with a picture from the tower camera. this is looking over the beltline this morning. watch how slow the cars are moving. you can see the snow accumulating on the sides of the highway there. 27 degrees, really looking ominous outside this morning
7:21 am
here in north earn portions of wake county and we're also pointing out the sleet and freezing rain mixture across the southern portions of our viewing area. we'll take a tour of our satellite radar so show you what is falling and where we're starting off with the north enportion and this is person county this is a report of emma at roxboro and they're seeing the snow quickly start to accumulate. we're seeing the snow accumulate there and we washing our way in durham -- we work our way to durham and hillsborough. look at take it 40, under the snow. so if you are traveling today, certainly be on the safe side. we're encouraging a lot of to you stay at home if you can. we could deal with a little sleet mixing in. and that is i40 coming in raleigh. big roadways are starting to get snow covered at this point
7:22 am
and down across the southern portions of our area, we're in the southern portions of moore to lee county. we have sleet and freezing rain there for quite some time and that will accumulate on bridges and overpasses first and foremost. and look at cumberland county this morning. spring-like and fayetteville and along 95, sleet and freezing rain this is really going to cause some headaches. in this area in cumberland county, expecting close to a quarter of inch. moore county a quarter tonk half an inch of ice possible. and the eastern portions of our viewing area, not expecting as much ice and snow. johnston county seeing light snow smithfield over 95 and goldsboro and wilson, getting a report of the highways actually glazing over because they're dealing with the sleet there
7:23 am
that is in effect this morning through 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. this is a prolonged event. eastern portions of our area not expecting to get hit as hard and that extends from edgecombe through sampson county and into tomorrow. i'll have more on exactly the totals that we're expecting. but this is difficult to forecast when the snow will change over to wintry mix and into rain. we've been monitoring the situation all morning. and we're getting new data to hone in when all the changeovers will happen. many of us saw sleet and freezing rain this morning. and this will be the case for triangles and north.
7:24 am
icy mix and the sleet and freezing rain and parts of chatum county will be dealing with heavier accumulations. and we'll see something with the accumulations this morning. and lunchtime, we're still dealing with the wintry mix south of the triangle and snow around the triangle. but into this afternoon, we get the surge of warmer air to the south and that may briefly change over some of the frozen precipitation across the sand hills and the i-95 corridor and sleet and freezing rain to a cold rain and that will cut down on the ice and snow totals and that looks to continue through this evening. but in areas in the triangle, points to the north and to the northwest will stay as the wintry mix and all snow in some spots. after midnight, the rain pull out to the northeast and colder
7:25 am
that means that we'll see a changeover back to snow overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning. and we got different types of winter precipitation falling. and a will the of people have been asking about the difference between sleet and freezing rain. freezing rain is actually liquid rain that falls as a raindrop but it will freeze on contact to any surface that it touches below 32 degrees or below. this will be an issue for bridges and overpasses and the treated. for more how much ice and snow that you can expect, we'll send things back over to alisa. check out what person county looks like right now. what a winter wonderland. if you're inside looking at this, you ask me and i think it
7:26 am
but if you're outside driving in this, conditions will be treacherous. as we progress through the morning, the snow will continue to add up and in person county, we're expecting between five and ten inches of snow and ice. and this includes western northern portions of orange county. and hillsborough. could you receive over five inches of snow and ice. and here in the purple, we're looking at three and five inches of snow and ice. and this includes northern portions of wake county and durham and granville and vance as well.
7:27 am
three inches of snow and sleet. speaking of ice, the bulls eye just off to the west. we see the snow and sleet line could wobble ever so slightly. but a half inch of ice shaded in pink. wind gusts 21 miles an hour in durham and siler city and 20 miles an hour in smithfield. so we have the weight of the ice and snow and sleet and then you start to see the gusty winds and tree limbs will come down and we're looking at downed power lines and the real threat of power outages later today. so make sure that you have a way to stay warm and make sure that you have flashlights and charge all of your devices now as long as you have power. and with the sustained winds out there and the cold temperatures, this is what it feels like. the windchill have been dropping through the morning. it feels like 12 degrees in
7:28 am
17 in raleigh and sanford. today looking for a high of 33 in raleigh at freezing. so i'm expecting durham and orange county to really stay in frozen precipitation through the day. 36 in fayetteville and they'll eventually change over to the cold rain. overnight tonight, the wintry mix is going to change to snow and we could see more accumulations. 29 degrees is the overnight low tonight and aheading in the coming days, -- and heading into the coming days, we're not expecting a lot of melting. 40s will be here on monday. the next chance of rain will be tuesday and wednesday. and the snow coming down and accumulating on the area roadways and that will cause some headaches from you have to head out on the roads.
7:29 am
outside and take a live look at the cameras and you can see some of the roads here. and this is i-85 and u.s. 70. the biggest issues here is with the cold air over top and underneath and that causessed bridge surface to freeze faster than the roads. and that is a live look at trinity road and edward mill road. some of the side streets that were maybe not treated or pretreated last night into this morning. they may be slick as well. be careful when you're turning corners. you want to avoid the slushiest areas in the middle of the intersections the bottom layer may refreeze. within more camera. -- one more camera here. and you take a look at i40 and aviation parkway and the traffic is moving fine. looking good right now. and the roads looking wet.
7:30 am
one more time here. we have some traffic issues to talk about. this is southeast of 495 and we have an accident on rodgers lane and another one at ava made drive. and traffic being tied up in both of those areas and on i-95 northbound. you see the orange there. the traffic is being side up around the i40 exit that is exit 81 due to an accident there. that still has not been cleared. and we're dealing with snowy roads in some spots. and one more accident just popped up on glenwood avenue and us us 70, north of 540. so it looks like an accident there as well. and slick roads in a lot of spots in the triangle and south of the triangle and that is where we're seeing the iciest spots, the spots that you see in pink. that will cause the delays on the roads. use caution if you have to drive.
7:31 am
7:32 am
all day. let's check in with andrew good morning. >> we appreciate you joining us. we've seen some of the reports coming in, 2400 flights northeastern seaboard. how are flights at rdu? >> today we've been notified by the airlines that we'll have more than 200 cancellations and we have about 250 daily flights and 200 cancellations today at rdu. we have a few delta and united flights and allegiant that are still scheduled today. so we individual passengers to check with the airlines and
7:33 am
>> the rdu is doing its best to keep one keep run runway open. how do you decide which flights get out and come in? >> that is made at the airport. we have crews working at the airport, working all night making sure that the air field is cleared and ready. right now it is just wet. the airlines will make the decisions on whether they fly, not the airport. and we have crews ready to tackle whatever comes today. >> do you have a crew in place that handled the runways in terms of personnel? and how many of them are there? >> we have a significant number of people there. they've been working all night pretreating. we pretreat runways and our
7:34 am
this is a little different. and we have plenty of equipment and contractors ready to tackle the air fields when the precipitation starts to build up on the surfaces. and we have not had to do that yet. everything right now is just wet. >> are you anticipating a huge backup tomorrow or over the weekend as you begin flights once again tomorrow and over the weekend? >> what we typically, one the airlines make the decision to restart the flights, you'll see and accordion effect the next couple days and how quickly they get their hub operations in different cities up and running. many of our flights do feed various airline hubs. so how the storms affect other cities will also determine how quickly the flights get going.
7:35 am
the next couple days, be in touch with your airline just to double-check. and wasn't to mention that many airlines have offered waivers for the ticket change policies to make it easier for you to rebook the next several days. >> i know your website is a good resource for cancellations and things of that nature. can you let us know what the address is and some of things offered on that for the viewers? >> on rdu.com we have flight status information and winter weather tips and information on airport status. another good resource is our twitter account at rdu airport. and we're posting airport updates as we get them and we get questions that travelers have via twitter today. this morning. thank you very much that is
7:36 am
it is the airlines that make the decision whether to cancel or delay a flight, not the airport. >> and now over to person county. um in roxboro we find emma wright. she was not daunting the hat a little earlier but now she has it on. how is it looking now? >> reporter: so earlier we're seeing light flakes and now we're seeing smaller flakes. you can hear it and see it. little pieces of ice. we saw a good bit of accumulation on the ground and they're calling for -- >> she's having some audio issues there. but in person county they're starting to get some more snow.
7:37 am
how is it looking for new. >> reporter: the sleet has pretty much stopped at this point. it is a little bit of freezing rain and it is a little miserable out here. and even though the freezing rain and sleet as stopped, the roads are extremely wet right now. but it is extremely wet. we did get a report of someone walking by that he saw someone spin out. anything. so all the cars that you're seeing right now, not having any issues. but there could be a small patch of black ice that you need to be careful of and give yourself some space in between all the cars. but you need to be a defensive out there. you may feel like you're safe
7:38 am
but you know don't know what doing. so some things to think about if you're heading out. another thing to think about with all the ice in moore county is the heaviness it brings with the ice, whether it be on tree limbs and branches or power lines. again. those power lines, the ice that could be on them that could cause some power outages. just have some things on hand whether it be water, maybe some bread, making it is nonperishable. make sure that the phones are charged. we'll be continually updating you through the day. you can always stream us live on your phone or checkup with us on twitter and facebook.
7:40 am
head to break now. we were talking about the ice pellets. an hour ago we saw big fluffy flakes and now we're seeing ice pellets. you may see them bouncing off my jacket. once you get it on top of the snow, it can make for tricky driving conditions. and they're calling for snow and ice all day. and it seems to look better out here. and there are some cars out here and you see one driving by any plows. the roads. and the traffic is moving along
7:41 am
slow. and you get a little ice on top of the snow and you'll have tricky driving conditions. and we'll bring you more updates later on in the show. i'm emma wright, wncn news. thank you. we're in our first few hours of what is expected to be a long storm. >> this is just the beginning. we're bullying a gallery on -- building a gallery on wncn.com with your photos. you can see the conditions. they changed a lot through the morning and a timeline of events. they are different depending on where you live too. share your winter storm photos with us. send them to wncn.com. we'll bring you updates on weather and traffic conditions.
7:42 am
seen on 17.2 and time warner cable on 1245. so you don't have to worry about that. so the big story of the morning is the whether. so let's get back over to meteorologist alyssa corfont. we have this all across the central portions of the state this is downtown raleigh. as we look at this you can see the tops of the buildings covered in snow and the roads are wet. and we'll show you another view from the area. this is from our tower camera. and the roads are wet and you see the snow on the sides of the highway there. and the good news cars are moving slowly. and you can see the accidents occurring in the area. so if you don't have to go outside, police don't. stay inside. -- please don't. stay inside where it is safe.
7:43 am
little sleet starting to mix in roxboro. we have snow steadily in mecklenburg and virginia. and we have some steady snow? granville, vance and warren counties and durham and orange county as well. we're waiting for the latest feed from our radar so see if this this sleet mixing in. in raleigh, we're seeing the light snow. we saw some sleet mix in through the morning, especially a few hours ago when all of this was just moving n we heard from our own sharon that it is starting to stick in wake forest and knightdale. and in garner. as you move towards johnston county, a little break in the action around benson. enjoy it while you get it i'm
7:44 am
to continue to move across the area. through the rest of today and into saturday, clayton and smithfield dealing with light snow. and we're getting reports this is cumberland county and fayetteville and grave creek and ford, wade, along 95 we're dealing with sleet and freezing rain. and it is starting to accumulate, especially on the elevated surfaces and industry signs and -- and street signs and tree limbs. so those will fall as we head through the morning. and this is moore county and you have seen a mixed bag of everything. we've been watching lauren's reports. and she -- started off with sleet.
7:45 am
towards siler city. and the winter storm continues through today and our saturday for all of the areas shaded blue. winter weather advisory on the other side of 95 and this includes sampson through saturday at 6:00 p.m. and for more on exactly what you'll see and when, i'm going turn over to kristin ketchell. we've been dealing with a mix of wintry precipitation all day. we're going to see this mess through the day and into tonight so let's break things down and set you through your day. you see the pink areas where we see the best potentials to see the higher amounts through the morning and that is south of the triangle and fayetteville seeing significant accumulations and we got snow
7:46 am
around the trial and spots to the north and heavier snow north of the triangle and through your lunch hour, and many of us will change back over to the wintry mix so sleet and freezing rain mixing in with the snow. and that means briefly change over some of our winter precipitation. and it will change over to cold rain south of the triangle and the i-95 corridor and that will cut down on some of the ice and snow totals. it will be a couple hours before the rain pulls out and we'll see the lingering precipitation changing back over to snow as we head into your saturday morning and even through saturday afternoon. we had had a lot of questions about the difference between sleet and freezing rain. it all depends on how much warm air is sitting above the
7:47 am
and right at the surface, we're seeing cold surfaces. so this falls as rain but then it will freeze on contact with any surface it hits at 32 degrees or below. and sleet, that starts the snowflakes and hits the shallow layer of warm air and refreezes into an ice pellet. you see them bouncing and hear them. and we saw a lot of that this morning. we have more snow and sleet on the way today. for a look how much we can expect, we'll turn things back over to alisa. we got reports from roseville, they received bay tenth of an inch. and other portions of the county under the blue shade that means one to three inches of snow and sleet. but this is a tight gradient. and look at this purple shade. three to five inches in durham
7:48 am
and it extends up through warren and into eastern portions of mecklenburg county and virginia. this includes person and northern portions of granville and portions of mecklenburg county and northern portions of orange county. you're under the five to ten radius of this snow event for us. up to an inch further south in harnett county and extreme portions of cumberland county. you're seeing it right now. you're looking at the potential for up to a quarter of an inch of ice to accumulate. and the bulls eye for ice is back to the ice towards chatum and up to a half inch pot there. and i think the power outages will be unavoidable for us.
7:49 am
123 23 miles an hour in fayetteville. so you have the snow and you have the sleet and the freezing rain and you have brutal rain. maybe. and the wintry mix through the afternoon. and 33 in raleigh today and 32 in durham. 29 degrees and overnight low and look at the winds between 15 and 25 miles an hour. that means once the winds continue to pick up today
7:50 am
and -- overnight and into saturday. a lot of us will start to see drier weather by the afternoon. and 35 at high on saturday. and then we should see the melting as we head towards sunday and plenty of sunshine and 42. the 40s will be here as we head into early next week as well. it is 7:56. we've been watching this move through and it is starting to add up on the roadways and making for treacherous travel conditions. and now to kristin. we have wrecks all over the place this morning. i want to start off with a look at our road conditions outside. we have several cameras to tell you about. you can see the elevated surfaces having the biggest issues this is in durham county. take is extremely slow if you have to driven over the elevated surfaces this is i40
7:51 am
traffic is moving slow. durham freeway, a little bit icy this morning. and the cars moving a little slow there and another camera coming up and this is from i40 and u.s. 164, the 440 slit. not a left traffic -- split. not a lot of traffic on the roads. schools and businesses closed. and this is u.s. 1 and 64 and across roads, traffic is moving okay there. but there are some slick spots on the roads. take a look at some of your traffic maps. you see all the spots where you see red, those are traffic accidents in the area. a big one on i-95 northbound at exit 87 that is tying up traffic on northbound and southbound side. east of raleigh, we have several accidents, one at 540 westbound and that is knightdale and that u.s. 64. so be careful in these areas.
7:53 am

and sleet in the south enportions of wake county and northern portions three to five inches and that goes the same for durham and orange county and chapel hill but the northern portions could receive five to ten inches and i'm thinking similar totals in granville county and the areas that could be spared out of this, they are receiving freezing rain right now in the sand hills up to an inch of snow in your forecast. but the ice like i said for the sand hills going to be critical thing for you. and a quart teaser and inch for you. so let's -- quarter of an inch for you. so let's look at this. we're still dealing with freezing rain at 3:00. and the temperature could struggle to 33 and continuing is late this afternoon, if

8:53 am
>> we'll be what is the latest out there, beau minnick? >> reporter: at this point the governor has a 10:30 press conference planned here with a lot of the energy officials so that will coming in a little more than an hour. and that the same time that he had the press conference here yesterday. and yesterday he had declared a state of emergency before the storm was coming in for the state of north carolina. and he really talked about the
8:54 am
to be out on the roads, just stay home today. and we certainly have been stressing that all morning. he also talked about being concerned as the emergency officials were about the impact of ice. so when we were driving here in raleigh, we didn't not see a lot of snow necessarily coming down. but it was a lot more of the freezing rain an ice mix and that might not look like a lot other than being slippery in terms of visual. but the ice gets so heavy when it is on the tree limbs and the governor said that is really the concern is what happens when the tree limbs start to come down. at that point, the tree limbs will come down and knock out power lines and we could face a lot of power outages. so we're waiting to see what the update will be at 10:30. and we'll bring it to you. back to you. >> thank you for the update. from the emergency operation
8:55 am
the ice is so deceptive. the rain is freezing on impact. and that is bad news for the tree limb that are vulnerable to break. >> another reminder to charge your smart phones and download our weather app. >> we have our news teams out there working for you keeping you protected. justin quesinberry is in the mobile news tracker. you've been just about morning. conditions so far, how are they looking for you? >> reporter: we're seeing wet conditions out here, not a lot fall from the sky. take a look at what i'm seeing right now as we merge on to 440 right now in raleigh. and we'll let you know that the city of raleigh will use salt today.
8:56 am
been using salt brine and that is because the low temperatures may freeze the substances today because they're out doing that today. and the city is using a priority system for treating roads. so they hit some of the major roads and public transit routes first and they make they're way to some of the other areas and they hit some of the residential and connector streets and all the other residential streets. if they don't get to you today, they will eventually. but there is a priority system in place and they have to follow that and live in raleigh, justin quesinberry, wncn news now. you brought this up earlier today. and there is a priority level when it comes to the roadways and treating them. >> there is. d.o.t. has about 200 trucks out now. and meteorologist alyssa corfont has been talking about the ice and the accumulation and how dangerous it can be.
8:57 am
we're looking at a lot of freezing rain starting to fall town in our southern -- fall down in our southern portions of our area. and roxboro, one to two inches of snow. and cedar grove and louisburg three-tenths of an inch and quarter an inch in raleigh. apex and durham looking at a tenth of an inch. we're looking towards downtown raleigh. and we're dealing with this drizzly weather. and light snow falling for some of you and the sleet mixing in for others. and we're seeing the intensity to back off a little bit for some of you. so we'll take you to a closer look. we'll do our little radar tour with you. and we're looking at mecklenburg county in virginia and steadier snow along the
8:58 am
northern portions of person and granville and vance and bring you into durham and orange county. and i just received a snow picture from the hillsborough area and we're getting ready to share that with you. durham, just a few flurries flying right there. in wake county, in the past hour, hour and a half, we're seeing the sleet start to mix in. and that is about what we're seeing at the airport right now. holly springs here. and if this was just snow, it would be a lot easier. but we would have a lot of sleet and freezing rain mixed in and that will make travel difficult. and you look at fayetteville and you're seeing a brief break in all of this and look at spring lake and rock fish, we're seeing some of the freezing rain and drizzle. and that is deceptive and you say it is raining, not the case. the temperatures are below freezing and that means the
8:59 am
and at one point, moore county was dealing with snow and freezing rain. and that shows you how tricky this system was and pinehurst and pine bluff now dealing with a slick event for us. and we're just getting into the storm and we have a lot to go as this is expected to continue through the day. effect. and that is in effect for areas mainly east of the 95 corridor. >> the areas that you see in
9:00 am
chances for league is the sleet and the freezing -- the for seeing the sleet the sleet and freezing rain. and we also have this surge of warm air pushing into the south and that may change some of the precipitation over to just plain rain, especially south and east of the triangle. so we're going to to keep a close eye on this for this evening and overnight tonight, the rain pulls out of the area, colder air mixes back in and we see a return of some snow no the area through tonight and through parts of the day tomorrow. and we had a few questions this morning about the difference rain. the freezing rain, that means that we have a big layer of warm air overahead but is he surface we're still at phrasing. it hits the warm air and melts and it freezes when it comes
9:01 am
the surface that is below freezing. >> we see a lot of the sleet video coming in. and you see the north earn portions of moore county, one to two three inches of snow and sleet. that extends through the southern portions of wake county and roanoke rapids and then we have the three to five inch band out towards the airport and brier creek. that it going to be a big difference across the county as the system continues to materialize around durham and southern portions of orange county and three to five inches of snow and sleet and then we look towards roxboro and person county could receive five to ten inches of snow and sleet. let's talk about ice coupled
9:02 am
this is going to cause widespread power outages. that is something that we don't want to expect. but i think it is a harsh reality of this system. if we get a half inch of ice from this, it will be detrimental in chatum and orange and quarter of inch in raleigh and areas off to the sand hills. and the winds, they're picking up. the late of the wind gusts 21 miles an hour in raleigh, 16 miles an hour in dunn and 21 in rayford and that makes it feel colder than where it actually is. 13 is what it feels like in henderson and 19 in durham. and the forecast today, again, so many limits in the forecast. and high of 33. if we stay at freezing, that means that we stay in the freezing rain this afternoon. and 32 in durham. and i expect to you stay with the frozen precipitation and 36 in fayetteville.
9:03 am
mix that will gradually change to snow, 29 degrees. as we head towards sunday, finally some melting can take place. plenty of sunshine and 42 and the 40s will hang other than for early next week as well. but we've seen all the snow and sleet causing problems on the roadways. for the latest on traffic back to kristin. the roads are still a mess across the area. travel not advised. if you can avoid it, i would recommend staying at home an off the roads. let's start things off with a live look at our cameras from outside. you can see that we have some messy and slow going conditions on many roads around the area, especially on the on and offramps. maybe you'll find that the plows didn't quite to get to those areas just yet and icy spots right now. a lot of them will be covered in ice and now over to another camera here. we're going to take a look at a another camera outside showing
9:04 am
lots of slow going out there. definitely, if you have to drive, keep it slow and definitely use some caution and you want to avoid being on the roads if at all possible here. there is still traffic on the roads. and we have some accidents to talk about as well. and we have one on i-95 northbound. this is exit 81. that is where i40 slips off. and there's andover turned tractor-trailer and they are still? the process of cleaning that up and that is slowing down traffic in both directions. and we just cleared an accident at glenwood avenue and kodiak street. but the conditions are still messy in the area on i40 westbound and exit 29 and wade avenue. and we're dealing with icy conditions on the area roads. any spot that you see covered in pink on the map in the triangle, that is where we're seeing some ice starting to accumulate on the roads. so take your time if you have to drive. but a lot of red showing up on
9:05 am
in the region and roads very slow going. the safest place to be is off the roads today and we'll have more traffic updates coming up in a few minutes. wake county students and traditional calendar will make up their day on may 15th. you can get the update information on wncn.com. families getting much needed help in durham just in time for the winter weather. we told you a couple weeks ago about a mother who launched a coat drive after seeing kids without coats at a bus stop on a freezing morning. >> she started a immediate why campaign using a hash tag bundle up durham. jackie love and the school district set up this room at

inches and maybe ten inches of good morning. i'm mike gonzalez. >> and i'm stefan chase. we're here to cover the winter storm. it will be here through the day. we're extending our coverage on wncn. you can watch the "today" show on 17.2 and also time warner cable on 1245. >> but we want you to stay here with us on wncn. this is what you need to know. hundreds of schools, businesses closed or delayed. we have a full list running at the bottom of screen or on wncn.com. >> and let's toss out to justin quesinberry. he is mainly out in wake county this morning. what are you seeing out there now? >> reporter: we're still in wake county getting on to 40 right now headed towards johnston county. and we can tell you that we can hear sleet coming down on the windshield right now.
9:08 am
you see the wet road. let me tell what you d.o.t. is doing this morning. they have about 70 trucks out this morning. and in the last couple of days, they were using a brine solution to try to pretreat the roads. and if they have not gotten to your road, if you think there needs to be a treatment, have some -- some some patience out there. there is a priority system in place for the d.o.t. the d.o.t. has 6,000 lane miles, that is more than any or county in the state. so it is a system that we have to be patient with. justin quesinberry, wncn news now. we'll continue to monitor
9:09 am
the roadways as we head through the morning. this is a live picture from shaw university. and we have a little ice sickle in the middle of the camera this morning and plenty of gray skies and not seeing a lot of precipitation here at our studios or as we look towards downtown. but we've been dealing with it over the past few hours. and i want to clearly see where it is white and purple and pink. there are different kinds of precipitation falling. and a left snow still falling in raleigh and to the north. as you head south that is where things start to get dicey. look at harnett county, completely covered in purple right now that is sleet falling as we speak. and sleet mixed in there from time to time towards cary and down u.s. 1 towards i40 as well. hopefully a lot of you staying off the roadways. we know there are a love of accidents in the -- a lot of accidents in the area. and we want you to stay safe through the day.
9:10 am
sanford, pinehurst and rayford all dealing with a mixed bag of precipitation, sleet to freezing rain. and if you walk outside and you say hey, it is raining, no. the temperatures are below freezing. and that mean it's is freezing on impact -- mean -- means it is freezing on impact. if you make the sudden movement it gets tricky driving around. and roxboro, light snow and vance county and henderson, seeing steady snow along 85 this morning. so let's get to the temperatures right now. 26 in raleigh and in durham and 23 in roxboro and south hill. around the sand hills, 29 in fayetteville and littling ton and clinton, you're the warm spot at 30. so all below freezing. once you factor in the sustained winds that are out
9:11 am
look at this the windchill at 14 degrees in raleigh and 12 degrees in roxboro and 13 in henderson and 23 in south hill so here's are what i'm thinking that will shape up for our day today. three to five inches of snow and sleet possible in the northern portions of wake county and northern portion -- southern portions of orange want and holly springs. could you see an inch or so and then we add on an inch of that. and that is when it will be nasty. so up to half an inch possible in the bulls eye to the west. around wake county and harnett county and cumberland, about a quarter of an inch possible so let's get to your forecast at 10:00 a.m. this morning and close to 28. we're still dealing with snow and ice. and we could see a little
9:12 am
today and the freezing rain because the temperatures shall still below freezing. 32 at 3:00 and we're cold and windy this afternoon and wind gusts could be approaching 35 miles an hour. and at 6:00, we could see the temperature climb to 33. and it will be a close call for this. in raleigh, we stay below freezing and we'll stay the freezing rain category. and if we see the temperature climb a few degrees, we could see more cold rain move in late evening. we'll be here around the clock monitoring the forecast conditions for you. become back to you guys. if you don't have to be on the roadways, don't head out that way. over to kristin now or to the governor? the governor's office and emergency management officials are monitoring the impact on the triangle and through the state. eight less check in with beau

9:21 am
we'll be right back after we've got justin quesinberry out on the roads this morning monitoring the conditions and meteorologist alyssa corfont and kristin ketchell are both in the studio monitoring the weather conditions. >> we'll head over to meteorologist alyssa corfont with more on the winter storm. it's been a busy morning to far and this is the start of this winter storm. it moved in between 2:00, 4:00 and it will continue not only through the rest of today but as well. this is a live picture from our studios. raleigh. i can tell that you the quickly. we can see the buildings downtown about 15 minutes or so
9:22 am
so some snow falling across the downtown raleigh and sleet mixing in there as well and that moon that's the traveling be down right dangerous if you have to head out the door this morning. and here's the satellite and radar. i'm stoping this to show you what is going on right now. i mentioned some of the sleet mixing in in wake county and we're looking more snow the further north you go and southern portions of our viewing area and freezing rain and sleet falling in the sand hills. let's start for the areas off to the north and steady snow across south hill and 85 anyone mecklenburg county virginia and steady snow in person county and we'll have lighter snow across central portions of granville county. let me bring you in to orange and durham county and light flurries in durham where we're seeing the brighter shades of white that is an indicater that we're dealing with -- indicator that we're dealing with some
9:23 am
i showed you the visibility greatly reduced and the sleet mixing in with the snow and that is going to accumulate on the roadways. and we're seeing that time and time again. they were treated in the overnight. but the rate this is coming done right now it will make the conditions slick. and speaking of slick, pinks all over payville towards grady creek. and that is freezing rain and it will freeze on impact. and we're seeing freezing rain and snow and sleet around portions of moore county and 7 lakes and pinehurst this morning. so take your time if you have to head out the door. i was talking earlier. this is the beginning of it. and we're getting into the thick of things and a winter storm warning continues to 6:00 p.m. blue. several everyones of snow and ice expected. we're not expecting as high of accumulations off to the east. we're expecting the winter
9:24 am
and the winter weather advisory continues in edgecombe and person county this morning. and now over to kristin ketchell. we've been dealing with the messy mix of wintry weather all morning and it will continue through the day today. hour. you can see 11:00 this morning, many of us still seeing much of the same and dealing with the heavy snow north of the trial and mix of sleet and freezing rain to points to the south. you do see some plain old rain pushing into the south. but there's a surge of warmer air and that may change our precipitation over from the wintry mix over to a little bit of cold rain and that is going to be an issue for folks south and east of the triangle.
9:25 am
wintry weather if our temperature does make it above freezing in the spots. so the temperatures still a big factor in the forecast today. and tonight electronic the rain pull out of the area. we get the colder air that wraps around from the west and the precipitation changes back over to snow as we head through tonight and tomorrow morning. so we have this messy mix here of three different types of winter precipitation. freezing rain and that happens when you have a deep, warm layer up high in the atmosphere. and the snowflake falls out of the cloud and hits the warm air and melt but it does not have enough time to refreeze so the raindrop will treat on contact with anything it hits at freezing or below. so the raindrop, it does have a chance to refreeze into ice pellets. and you can hear them and see them. they bounce and make a lot of noise. and now back over to
9:26 am
we're seeing a lot of the sleet falling in the sand hills. i'm not expecting you to see a lot of snow and sleet from this accumulations. then we hit the one to two three band and that includes southern portions of wake county and three five inches of snow and sleet across the northern portions of wake county and that includes areas of warren and vance county on through chatum county so that area of purple we're watching closely, a big gradient in a small a space. and northern portions of orange county between five and ten inches of ice and snow. ice. and the bulls eye off to the west, about a half inch of ice possible. and we all know when we get a half inch of ice that is enough

showers and expecting more in the way of accumulation especially in the trial and northbound and tomorrow afternoon, 35, not expecting a lot of melting to take place. i expect warming to take place sunday and monday. but it is something that we've been talking about all morning and we're seeing nassy nasty accidents out there. a lot of problems on the roads. so let's take a live look at some of the cameras outside here. this is i-85 and u.s. 70. you can see that the several parts of the roadways looking okay. but is it the onramps and shoulders, that where you'll have some shall use and the traffic is moving very slow there and we'll switch things over to trinity road and edward mill road where we're still seeing icy issues.
9:29 am
to be out and about and we'll go ahead and pull in one more camera. this is i40 and aviation parkway. so things are moving a little slow. so let's move to our traffic map. we have a major accident on i- 95 southbound south of kenly. and there are three tractor trailers and two passenger vehicles believed to be involved, all lanes northbound and southbound in this location closed at this point. the crews investigate and clean up the accident and another one on i-95 northbound and exit 85 and that is where i40 splits offer and several in and around raleigh, especially north raleigh. and 540 eastbound at exit 7. there's a wreck there and i40 eastbound and a lane is blocked at exit 284. that is the airport boulevard exit. if you have to travel today, use extreme caution. travel not advised. a lot of the roads in the area
