to respond to. >> we often seen winter storms that hit a section here and there. does this seem horribly widespread to you? >> sadly since i've been governor, this is the thirty one. there used to be unique till i became governor. i don't know if that is a good sign or not. maybe in that regard, i don't bring good luck. but this is, again, another unique experience. but we have had it three years in a row where we had a storm basically cross the state. it doesn't go as far east this time. but in the last 24 hours, we're not sure of the freezing rain in the eastern inland areas of the state that could make especially the second dare roads extremely dangerous. so that is the greatest
11:01 am
resources. this is not just government resources. the weather conditions could change dramatically or in the triangle area or the fayetteville. they're getting freezing rain. what i'm talking about areas, i'm talking about regions and i'm trying to signify regions and those are both secondary roads and primary roads so that is our biggest challenge right now and that is why we have resources deployed through the. but it is a major challenge built we're up to the challenge. >> one more question. so you mention as the rain falls it will wash off the brine and the other materials and we have more snow forecast for tomorrow is there going to be chance to get anything else out on the roads before the snow moves in tomorrow or is that not going to happen?
11:02 am
i'll have nick answer that question. >> again, the brine pretreat is what i was referring to as washing away. and just because we put salt and sand on the spot, it doesn't mean it stays there. so we continue to return to the spots. and the trucks that you're seeing with the plows, they have spreaders on the back of them. so the material will be reapplied. and i'm sure several times in a lot of places that we have to work on. >> don't take it for granted. people will say, they have gone the road. they may have. but this is the unique carolina weather. where the sleet and snow and rain and back to rain and that makes it a difficult job for d.o.t. that is why it is best to stay off the road. i would like to stay off the road and the media and the citizens for cooperating. let's enjoy time with the family and rest. go panthers on sunday.
11:03 am
the game will go on. that was the press conference by governor mccrory and second nick -- of the d.o.t. and second frank perry. he said this is a region wide swap. and the biggest things, four deaths now because of wreck across the state. >> mentioned treacherous conditions, especially along i- 95 and i40. if you can stay offer the roads, -- off the roads, please do. another message, if you got a neighbor that lives alone or is vulnerable or having a medical condition, the senior citizens out there, knock on their door and check in on them and make sure they are okay and see if they need anything. >> we'll be back with more of

11:07 am
the totals continue to climb and bethel hill, two inches of snow and sleet and siler city, half an inch and under half an inch and carpenter and durham and tenth of an inch and snow and sleet. we've been predict that the totals can vary greatly. make sure that you e-mail us at wncn.com. 27 degrees right now. and that is a live picture from our tower camera. and you see the skyline but not the case this morning as we continue to track snow and sleet moving across the area. and visibility greatly reduced. and we have been dealing with this since 2:00, 3:00 this morning. so several hours into this storm, we have several hours yet to go. and you can see west what is falling right now and it is light in nature across sampson and cumberland and hope counties this morning.
11:08 am
sleet and that is what we're dealing with, some sleet mixing in around wake county before we get to that, let's start in the northern portions of our viewing area. and roxboro still dealing with accumulating snow. and we had reports from emma wright out in the field all morning dong and now to the northern portions of granville and oxford still seeing steady snow there. and further south in durham and chapel hill and i40, we see the moderate snow at this point. the white bands showing up. in wake county, from time to time, we have seen sleet mix in. rdu, cary, downtown raleigh, seeing that happening over pnc arena. and down in holly springs and you saw your share of sleet. right now it looks like mainly a snow event and we head further south and this is cumberland county.
11:09 am
more sleet and freezing rain and we've been dealing with freezing rain for the last several hours and grave creek along the i-95 corridor. the liquid will freeze upon impact. you will see the freezing on the objects like street signs and power lines and branches. the weight of that is going to bring those things down and that is when we will look at power outages. and further east of the triangle this morning. this is johnston county. smithfield, you're seeing snow along 95. but then wayne county right up and down 795, freezing rain and some sleet out there this morning up towards wilson and we continute to see the conditions. here is the winter storm warning in effect through 6:00 on saturday. this include the triangle and portions of the sand hills and it includes areas to the north
11:10 am
advisory. dangerous traffic expected through the rest of today and saturday. but for more on what you can expect through the time frame, i'm going send it over to kristin with an hour by hour detail. we've been dealing with this messy mix all morning and of day today. so i want to break things down for you hour by hour. we have the sleet and the freezing rain in areas around the triangle and points to the south around lunchtime and some of the heavier snow showers north of the triangle likely to see the sleet mixing in with that as well, especially later this afternoon and into early this evening. and the areas shaded pink that is the wintry mix. that is sleet and freezing rain. but we get the surge of warmer pushing up from the south, it will change over and a cold rain in areas of fayetteville and south. and also along the i-95 corridor.
11:11 am
precipitation you'll see. so many of us will stay in all frozen precipitation but in spots that are above 32 today and we may see some of that change over to rain. but a messy day ahead and continuing into tonight and tomorrow as well. we see some snow early on saturday morning. for a look how much snow and ice we can expect, back over to meteorologist alyssa corfont. >> this forecast was a vicky one. we have been -- was a tricky one and we have been stressing over it for the past few days and now you see more of the ice and sleet variation. so concentrate on the lower end of this for right now. one to two three inches possible around portions of wake and lee county and this extends over nash county and up towards halifax and north hampton and it extends in all the areas shaded purple and other portions of granville and
11:12 am
county and also look at the north enportions of orange county, -- the northern portions of orange county and that extends into person and mecklenburg. and the dangerous part of this forecast is this ice. ice is no one's friend t is impossible to -- it is impossible to drive on. and we're looking at a quarter of an inch of rain. and the west of raleigh. and couple that with gusty winds up to 30 miles an hour. and, again, power outages are a real threat this afternoon. and the wind gusts are not in the range just yet. they're at 21 miles an hour in fayetteville and that is enough to do some damage. and we've been talking about the windchill all morning long and the actual temperatures still below freezing and it feels colder than that. and it feels like 16 in durham and 17 in sanford and 16 in siler city and it feels like 21
11:13 am
we're talking about tricky weather. in raleigh, expecting it to get to 33. and we'll be on the line. 32 in durham and 36 in fayetteville and then we head to tonight and the wintry mix changing to snow and the best chance for accumulations still looks to be around the triangle and north ward, 29 is the overnight low. and let's talk about the coming days. i'm sure everyone wants to know when it will end. we're still talking about the chance of accumulating snow saturday morning and then sunday, sunshine and expecting some melting so that should be nice. as we head into early next week, we have to watch as the kids head become to school or not and 48 on monday and sunshine there and the next chance for rain and some plain old rain tuesday and wednesday. but that is the latest look at your forecast. we have to check in with traffic because it has been a bit of a nightmare on the roadways. >> it is getting worse. and the map is lit up right now with wrecks and the roads are
11:14 am
a lot of icy spots. but take a live look outside at a couple of the roads right now. this this in in. c -- this is nc47. and another camera i440 and capitol boulevard. and the traffic is moving okay but the roads are slick. keep that in mind. and one more camera to show you. this is i540 and credemore road. there have been several wrecks in the area already today. you see the road is not very clear there and those onramps andoff ramps are where you'll -- and the offramps are where you'll see most of the issues.
11:15 am
tell you about on i540 eastbound and one at jones franklin road and western boulevard and one at kent road there and a big accident still. we just saw a video of this a few moments ago. part of the road is still blocked at exit 81 around benson by the i40 turnoff and one on i40 westbound. there's one lane blocked at exit 534. this is nc highway 96. so we have a lot of accidents. and the roads are very icy and it is not advised that you travel today if you can avoid it at all. and we'll have more updates coming up later. glad to see that the drivers are taking it nice and slow. this is northwest of the triangle. >> and that is where we find emma wright. she's been there all day long. it looks like you got some snow coming right now. how is it looking? >> reporter: it is really coming down. we've been saying that all morning.
11:16 am
this morning and it has been coming down here all morning. we had some big fluffy flakes and now we have the hard pellets, ice. i'll show it on my jacket. you see is bouncing off. that is what we're dealing with right now and a little more treacherous than the fluffy stuff that we had before we probably had two, two and a half inches out here right now. if is a grainy type of snow and not good for making a snowman and bad for the roads this is highway 501. it is a mess. we saw a couple d.o.t. trucks come through and put some so the on the road. they have not done my plowing, road. not as many cars as we on a normal friday morning. but the people driving around seem to be taking it slow.
11:17 am
roads are not great. they've seen worse. but luckily we have not seeing some of the ice like they are seeing in the sand hills. they're mostly dealing with the fluffy powder. but it did not take much to slip and slide. you want to give yourself a few extra minutes and take it slow. the highway patrol responded to 571 calls across issue. it caused more than 70 wrecks related to the weather. roads.
11:18 am
wncn. this type of situation with the severe weather it. can happen. to right now there are no signs of snow in fayetteville. imagine that. >> biggest problem there is freezing rain, sleet and
11:19 am
>> reporter: we're downtown fayetteville and dozens of cars encased in ice. you walk around and you see a lot of drivers have left their windshield wipers raised so when they come back, they will not be frozen too bad. a lot of cars, the drivers are placing covers or towels on the doors to make sure once they come back that they'll be able to open up the door. and we talked to the police. and they say there have been no weather related accidents here this morning. and we checked in with the highway patrol and they had two accidents through the county. ems officials tells us they are still monitoring the situation. they had a few slick spots but nothing major. stay at home, stay inside. if you have to come on the roads, take your time and be

nick rogers, wncn news. and the governor's office and emergency management officials are monitoring the storm's impact on the triangle and through the state this entire weekend. >> and beau minnick joins us from the north carolina emergency management operation center in raleigh with an update. >> reporter: we have more of an update now in terms of power outages and what duke energy is seeing across the carolinas. i want to bring in jeff brooks here. we heard about 6,000 outages, customers without power in north carolina. i think that is mainly in the western part of the state. what can you tell us what is happening out there? >> as we saw the storm move further east and north, we're seeing the snow earlier changing over to freezing rain and sleet. and that is the recipe for increased outages. and we're up to 6,000 now and we expect the numbers to
11:21 am
evening as the conditions worsen. >> would you expect that what the west is seeing now, we might start seeing in a number of hours? >> it's hard to tell with the ice storms and snowstorms, a few miles and few degrees can make a few difference. but i expect we'll see the conditions continue for several hours. and that can increase the amount of ice on limbs and you start to see the limbs coming out and create outages. >> we were talking a bit off camera. and it seems a little unique for this particular storm in north carolina, simply time that we're getting hit by this winter weather. it wasn't like we got hit in a short little burst this is a prolonged storm here. in terms of ice and power outage what role does at a play. >> the length of the storm is very important. it will not give any chance for
11:22 am
and we could see outages increase into tomorrow and sunday as the weight lingers on the limbs and the lines going forward. >> reporter: people watching our broadcast are watching it here in north carolina. but many of people have family in south carolina. you were telling me there are significant outage there's as well? >> yes, we saw about 12,000 people without power. and that will continue some time but as the storm continues more into north carolina we expect to see them more here. we brought in 3,000 additional resources from the south and the midwest because we anticipate that the outages will increase and something we'll need the additional resources to address going forward. >> reporter: at this point, people are presumably home watching this and they'll still have power at this point, what
11:23 am
not going to the stores. but what should they do as far as in their homes? >> you should prepare as if it will. come up with the plan if you would lost power. make sure that your cell phones are charged that is the best way to stay in charged with your utility and the media and have a plan if you need to leave your home. if you rely on your electricity for health equipment, you need to be in a safe place now and not have to leave. preparing for a multi-day outage are something that everyone should consider. >> reporter: i saw a press release that i had not heard of before if you do lose power it is a good idea to then go and turn off your appliances. tell me about why that is important n. >> everyone is home and using energy. when the power goes off.
11:24 am
but as soon as it comes back on, it will surge back on the grid. and you can help ease the load on the grid and it can also help protect your appliances from power surges. >> reporter: so unplug them. >> yes. it will help us out and protect your appliances as well. in the triangle? are the crews still on standby waiting for things to happen? >> we have been very fortunate so far this morning. we expect that will change but a lot of the crews are at their staging sights are ready to responsibility. bull we'll deploy them as needed to the hardest hit areas and where we see the outages occur. >> thank you for your time. and we're continuing to monitor the situation here at the emergency operations center. you just heard a short time ago from governor mccrory and a number of emergency officials
11:25 am
with this latest winter storm. beau minnick, wncn news now. i want to get updated on the hurricanes and rangers game. it will be played as schedules. but this is breaking. they're going to offer ticket exchange for future games. head over to wncn.com. we have all the details. if you're a hockey player, you play no matter what. >> but if you cannot get out there, they're going to make it up to you. >> something else happened. you mentioned how treacherous the wind conditions are making it out there as well. >> reporter: they are going to make it treacherous as we head into the afternoon and that coupled with the weight of the snow and ice power lines and tree limbs, i expect to see more outage it's. this is to show you that the visibility is very low in raleigh. we cannot see towards downtown.
11:26 am
here in the triangle. 27 degrees right now. it's been a while since we showed you this. this is a massive storm that we're dealing with. we're dealing with blizzard watches and warnings up in our nation's capitol and new jersey and pennsylvania . this is a plain old freezing rain, snow and sleet. and it's been this way for several hours.
