the west that intensify as we head into tonight. we could get a short break overnight, but then another batch of snow will move in early tomorrow and will fall to light head into saturday. two components have made this a horrible winter storm. an area of low pressure that has brought us moisture run into this area of high pressure that is pumping in cold air. once again right over central north carolina. so we are not done with this event, and some of us may have not seen the worst. that is why a winter storm warning is still in effect through tomorrow night. travel could be very dangerous until 6:00 tomorrow night. as far as temperatures, some of us have nudged up a little bit, but now the problem becomes wind. they are picking up. in fact, they are gusting above 20 miles per hour and that is what is

and powerlines down. of course, it makes it look really cold outside. wind chips in the teens. we are going to keep frozen precipitation in the forecast through midnight. a short break in the early morning hours before snow starts to fall for many of us. and while temperatures will hold around freezing for the next several hours. they fall for tomorrow morning. and roads will stay treacherous. we do have sunshine and warmer weather. we'll talk about that and i'll take you hour by hour through the next two days in just a few minutes. >> as those wind gusts increase over the past three hours, we start to see the number of power outages climb significantly across raleigh, durham, and fayetteville. >> close to 20,000 at last check. this video just coming not from what is normally a busy intersection. there is no power at highway 401 by 1010. businesses there without power. scenes like this all over. wncs live at duke staging area

steve? out here at now. indicated. to increase. something new has been added out here for us. let's saw rain. we saw sleet. we saw snow. now we are seeing nothing. absolutely nothing comeing from the sky. the problem was earlier enough cold conditions to create ice and the ice is the big problem. >> az the ice is coming down, it's accumulating. it's bringing down the tree limbs and hitting our power lines. >> you have a lot of crews that you brought in here. are they still being deployed out working the roads now? deployed throughout staging sights across the carolinas. we have a total of 7000 line workers that are area. so they are going to be deployed as needed at this point. >> and as wes indicated, the winds are starting to pick up.

tree limbs and those isolating power lines are going to start snapping and falsing you can expect the outages to incross during the overnight hours. reporting live, wncn newsnow. and this was the scene on i- 95 in one person was killed after a tractor-trailer jackknifed. we're told the victim was a driver in a pick-up from virginia. so far, that person has not been identified. wade avenue, and this is a look at i-40 at wade avenue. it looks like traffic is moving okay over there. albeit very slowly. so if you are headed over there, you see the wet roadways is posing still a problem. and in the past 24 hours, dot has responded to more than a thousand accidents across the states. amy cutler has been on the roads all afternoon. being very care. and she is live in the wncn

where are you and what are you seeing right now? >> well, we're about to get on to 40 west. the conditions, the road conditions have gotten a little bit better in the last couple of hours. there are still a lot of people on the road. give me a live look now. we are just at a traffic look waiting to get on to 40 west again, but the roads are slick and slippery. the concern now is the temperatures drop. there could be some icing on the rods. we have driven by several accidents. and it is particularly hard on those secondary roads. hills. to get up. we the road conditions here, and we will have a live update coming up in a little bit. for now we're live in raleigh, amyct electionr, wncn news. this comes as crews are cleaning the roads. they are having

team coverage continues with wcnn. hi. >> sharon all day long out here at the dot yard, it's been a constant flow of trucks in and out of the dot yard. the workers take breaks whenever they can here inside, but they have been mainly out on the roads. there are 70 dot workers on the roads in wake county, they have been putting down salt and sand and once the roads get slushy, they'll then put the plow blades out, but really the issue they have been facing today has just been this constant precipitation and how it is making things difficult. no, the main issue is when we go through an area and we apply the salt even at the temperature we are at now, it's still able to activate and do what we need it to do. the issue is when we come back through and push that off after a certain time with the constant precipitation, it doesn't very

there were several wrecks throughout the area, a police car that ended up in a ditch. it wasn't just the rods that were dangerous. the ice made sidewalks very slippery. tree branches were also frozen making it a messy evening and that is only going to get colder. a lot of businesses also closed since their parks lots were -- parking lots were frozen ore. it's a quarter inch thick of ice. once these temperatures drop tonight, all of this will refreeze begin. it's only going to get more dangerous as the night continues. if you can stay home, please do. in southeast raleigh, joen than rodriguez, wncn news now. this has been the scene in durham for much of the day. snow, sleet, and people cleaning it up. our team coverage continues with mario boone. >> the sleet has changed back to snow. the good news is we have not seen a lot of traffic on the roads. we have seen more pedestrian traffic than we have seen vehicle traffic. we have seen tractors

every so often plowing the sidewalks. this area here has not been plowed. look t ahow deep that slush and stuff goes. of course the concern is tonight. that is going to turn into ice. now, somewhere some video that we took earlier of work crews down here in downtown durham working to spread sand and salt on the sidewalks to again plow the streets down hereby in downtown to make sure everything is clear. we also have video of the one restaurant that we found open in downtown durham. and we found one brave man from louisiana who made his way all the way into downtown durham from his hotel. and let's take a listen to what he described on his drive here in downtown. >> and i actually swerved on the interstate because the tires lost traction r. >> and you are taking a live look here in downtown durham. we have seen the snowplows come through here every few

every maybe half an hour and is clear. they have been able to keep this one lane open tonight. again, the concern as these temperatures continue to drop overnight, this slush we see on the roadway will turn into ice. of course, there is simply no your volkswagen on ice. again, emergency workers recommending that you stay home if at all possible. we're live in downtown durham tonight. i'm mario boone, wncn >> we want to turn our coverage to lee county where we find mate rogers. what is the situation where you are? >>reporter: hey guys. we're in lee county, and i tell you this intersection right here was the last couple of hours. we have seen at least four or five spin-outs, just folks trying to turn but somehow losing control. now, no doubt snow accumulation here, but most of all, the roads covered in sleet. that coupled with ice is what is causing several accidents. highway patrol tells us

although some people weren't their injuries threatening. throughout the day, rods were barren as most people made advice from officials to stay home. however, we did catch up with one guy who took advantage of the wintery mix. take a listen. >> so despite the messy roads and cold temperatures, you're still out here getting your work-out in, huh? >> tell me about it. >> just, you know, got to work out. can't stop, can't let the weather stop me. and and i want to be as prepared as possible. lain has certainly dropped. we are now seeing more salt trucks come through and treat the roads now. another reminder from the department of transportation crews, as they will out putting salt. and as they are putting sure drivers, that you are giving those truckers some room to do their work.

international. most flights were canceled. >>reporter: as the day goes on, people who thought they were getting out of here, that is not going to happen. some people are able to check in for their flights and do think they are still going to make it out of here. other people are finding out flights going out of here even on delta are going to be canceled at this point. all major airlines are at this point waiving their fees to cancel flights. flight aware rdu tops the list nationally for the percentage of flights canceled today. about two-thirds of the flights scheduled to lever from here have been canceled and 70% of the flights that were supposed to arrive. there is a line at the united airlines counter where people are trying to reschedule. at least a couple more days. >> it's a lot different than chicago. not up here. throe plows yesterday and today. and not really a lot of salt trucks.

you guys have the brian trucks. you jus don't have this kind of weather. >>reporter: the canceled flights at rdu are among 2900 across the country that already have been canceled today. it looks like a similar story on saturday. airlines already canceling flights tomorrow as well. airport managers are encouraging people to go to the airline's websites as they have outlined what they are doing. we find out more information on what fees in terms of changing or canceling flights. at rdu, wncn news now. >> michael, thank you very much. it is friday night. just after 6:00, and it is pretty dead on 440 west in eastbound. that results of the weather. temperatures holding at 30-degrees. we are still below freezing and some 1515 hours into this event, gentlemen another 24 hours to go. so conditions are not going to improve at least until sunday morning. behind me, the radar not

holes of dry air in the heart of central north sleet, freezing rain, and snow showing up. you also see another batch to our west. that batch we expect to intensify a little more. so as we head into the evening more sleet, freezing rain and snow will be possible. and it will go over accumulations. mainly snow back to our west. ashville 12 inches of snow. we have a couple of inches as well as we heard earlier washington expecting nearly two feet. so here are some of our reports. and if you missed it earlier in the day, a little more sleet in our forecast has resulted in lower amounts. snow is nice and, ifluffy; right? the same amount of sleet packs down and doesn't measure. here are snow and sleet reports from around the area. as usual, bethel hill. you guys getting most of it. three and

county. orange county, two inches. an inch and a half again of sleet and snow in carrie, and pine hurst a little over an inch. that is some of the reports we have. a couple of things we are watching as we led into tonight. temperatures many are still at or below frozing. these numbers staying below freeze willing do two things. they will keep the roads slushy and/or frozen and they will keep the precipitation coming out of the sky frozen or snowy. behind me are current winds. this is a problem we are going to see continue if not increase into tonight. and there is already plenty of ice on threes -- trees and powerlines. gusts up to 32 miles per hour. that is going to continue to work on those branches and powerlines. at some point, many of them could snap. christine gave us this picture from here in raleigh. just look at the ice hanging from the powerline and the trees. everything starts to sag, and at some point,

point and unfortunately they could break on to powerlines knocking power out. trees falling on cars, houses, so again, as we head into tonight, this is going to continue to be a problem. and we are going to see temperatures hold wind teens in the -- we are going to see temperatures finally start to drop as we get on the backside of the system. let me show you what that means for precipitation. at 6:00, that hole is going to fill in as rain mainly stays east and along i-95, but frozen precipitation continuing through most of north south carolina. and as we start to get on the backside of that low early tomorrow morning. and more cold air. that is when those temperatures are going to drop. another batch of mainly snow moving not. not a lot of accumulation. one to three inches.

drying out sooner in the sand hills. we get into the afternoon, still a little bit of leftover light snow before we finally dry out late saturday night, and by sunday morning, we will have clear skies. tomorrow, we'll -- tomorrow will be another windy and cold day s. good chances of precipitation, but it is not a mix tomorrow. it is mainly a snow i vent. not a major one, but a light snow event and on top of ice, you put snow still making travel p. we're above freezing with sunny skies up to 40 on sunday, but i would say sunday afternoon is the first time the roads will start to improve. we're headed to 48 monday. we have rain in the forecast tuesday and wednesday before it gets chilly again. our three degree guaranteed high tomorrow. thirty-three. today we made it to 32 and it was a cold and miserable day but we are happy. heat and air to give another

disease welcome back. the snow started falling early. and live in roxboroe. and sheriff, and really haven't gotten any snow after about 1:30 this afternoon. and right now, all it is really is just sleet. you can't really pack the snow or anything. if you look out highway 501 here, you'll see it is -- no cars. if you look this way, you have a few cars. if you want to look the other way, you have some cars coming in.

out all day clearing the roads. they have layed out 200 tons of sand. businesses over. i went out to a car dealership earlier today and they say today is the best day to buy a four wheel drive, believe it or not. a lot of businesses here in the area are open, and folks say look, we're used to weather like this. this isn't too bad for us. we used to getting out and driving. meanwhile, a lot of businesses and stores remain open just by the weather. >> we have been here since 37 and we had the doors open. whenever the weather is bad, many e and my brothers own the place. we're going to be here regardless. whether the wealther is good or bad. >> the foe cuts tonight shifts to potential power outages. there have been no
