6:01 pm
the threat of icy roads still lumes. >> that winter weather advisory is for black ice not for anything falling from the sky any more. and the weather service, i've talked to him about it over the years. they have to call it a winter weather advisory. i like to refer to it as a black ice advisory. we're going to have clear skies later tonight. we'll have the black ice advisory into tomorrow. 32 degrees right now. the sun is down. and we are just sitting with cloudy skies. as a matter of fact, as we take a look and see what is going on right now, you can see 32 degrees. let me go back for a second. 32 degrees in durham and raleigh. 33 fayetteville. 32 roxboro. now we'll remove those temperatures. little bits of snow flurries still falling. southeast of dunn we're not looking for any accumulation. but this is all going to twist off to the northeast. and in its place, this is one more potential couple flurries that might happen in the triangle at about 9:00. but as we head toward midnight
6:02 pm
much dry with the flurries moving off toward the east. that's on our future cast. so what we've got for you, hour by hour, is a chance of a few snow flurries, mainly northeast and east of the triangle. not effecting any accumulations. 29 degrees that temperature. but i do want to talk about this black ice advisory. or a winter weather advisory for black ice. that's the official name from the weather service. it includes our viewing area. so what i've noticed today, the roads that were plowed like route 40 doesn't have anything on it right now. but it's wet. that will refreeze. you'll have icy spots. and then all the numerous, numerous roads that are full of ice are going to stay there tonight. so it's going to make it for dangerous traveling despite the fact you see by midnight, we don't worry about the flurries. look what's going to happen over night. we're going to clear out. but with these temperatures getting into the low 20s to mid 20s. we're going to have problems on the roadways. once again, nothing falling from the sky causing it. but what's left over on the
6:03 pm
and that winter weather advisory for black ice does go until noon tomorrow. but we do have sunshine in the forecast for tomorrow. we'll tell you when it will actually get above freezing and we'll start melting things coming up this half hour. >> there are some slippery spots out there all ready. power outages and slick roadways are the biggest concerns across the state. and as you get farther north and west things get worse. mario boone is live in durham where he's been checking on the roads out there. how does it look out there mario? >> reporter: we've been on the roads today for about eight hours. and i can tell you some of the problems we're seeing right now is this, it's a bit hit and miss. some of the roadways have been plowed and then other parts of the road, you can see they attempted to plow right here. but it's still covered in slush. and of course the worry is tonight, this will freeze, making driving even more dangerous. and check this out, the governor urged people to stay home today. not to go to sporting events. but go blocks from here. right down this way over here
6:04 pm
and that was business as usual. take a look. in just 48 hours road conditions nose dived from treacherous to deadly. >> sadly, there's also been two fatalities. two additional fatalities. >> bringing the total of storm- related traffic fatalities to six. as state patrol said troopers have worked 2,000 crashes. some with injuries, and go durham transit, limited bus service at 10:00 a.m. yet conditions were so bad, that idea was quickly scrapped. but even that news did not stop a throng of fans who made their way to the deepex saturday to see the musical matilda. >> we're new to the area from maine. we're used to snowy weather. >> i definitely wanted to come. >> kammi baits drove in from raleigh for the show and she
6:05 pm
>> there were a couple spots that were pretty bad. especially getting on and off the highway. >> once they reached downtown durham they found road crews hard at work clearing streets and sidewalks. baits said her strategy was to catch the show early and race home before sunset. >> because it'll get dark here soon enough and the roads will freeze back over. >> all right. back live here on the streets of durham. you see this car making its way through. without any problems. we hope that continues through the night. so here's the deal, police are still saying stay home and be safe. and so we will be out here and of course continue to monitor conditions and we will have updates, live updates here on air and of course at wncn.com. reporting live in downtown durham, mario boone, wncn news now. stay safe out there, mario. thousands of power outages are plaguing folks across the state despite 7,000 people working now around the clock for duke energy. wake and johnston county are

than 50,000 people still impacted by outages. nash county is also feeling the impact of downed trees and power lines. wncn's justin spoke with a family there who's been without power for 24 hours. it's crazy. you take the little things for granted. if you don't turn on the light switch, it's tough. >> donald lost electricity around 6:00 friday night. and by saturday afternoon, he borrowed a generator from a friend to continue to power through the outage. >> so we just actually just hooked it up now. got a freezer going on it. refrigerator and stuff like that. we're going to let the neighbor get a little bit of heat off that too. >> he lives in bailey where ice and trees brought down five utility poles. >> this is a significant restoration. >> duke energy had a 30-person crew working to replace poles and lines there. and restore power to the 500 to 1,000 customers impacted.
6:07 pm
i appreciate them out there doing that. but man, apparently, three or five poles are down. >> a duke energy spokesperson said it could take about six hours to clean this up and restore power here. but statewide it could be monday evening before everyone has electricity again. >> we do want our customers to be aware that we're working hard. but it's a multiday event. and it could -- restoration can go over the next couple days. >> i'm just thankful to be able to have a roof over our heads. and have what we do have. and i know it'll be back up and we'll not be thinking about it in a year or two. in nash county, wncn news now. about three inches of snow and ice are on the ground in lead county tonight. some businesses are closed due to the weather. some folks are out making a little extra cash. wncn caught up with benjamin paterson. as he cleared parking lots in the area.

6:13 pm
create the greatest issues. >> and cuomo says the national guard is ready to help if necessary. i can tell you on my way to work today, there were as you mentioned a lot of water on the roads. most of the main roads seemed clear. but it's the black ice we're worried about. >> black ice is stuff you can't see. you look at the roads that are plowed. they look fine. if they have remnants of moisture. it might take the mid 20s for the roads to freeze depending on if they're treated or not. the ice will form and you won't see it. that's the definition of black ice. there's a lot of roads that are completely covered. and that's dangerous. i mean it's been dangerous all day. they're not going to improve tonight. so we've got widespread areas of concern. but when life gives you lemonade -- wait i mean when life gives you lemon you make lemonade. and when life gives you snow and ice you sled. this is parker and campbell with their dogs pike and boon, sledding in durham. >> they're having fun.

6:15 pm
if i'm a betting man, which i don't condone, tomorrow night we'll have another black advisory trying to get to school on monday. there will probably be delays. we're going to go back down to the low 20s like we will tonight. the radar picking up a little precipitation in the form of some light snow. northern samson county in little specks here. i have this dialed in to try to pick up the lightest snow. it's showing up blue here. but it's all in the form of snow. you see it dropping down to the southeast. and things are rotating around. so if we see any flurries tonight, the best chance believe it or not, up by roanoke rapids, south hill virginia, and as we look at the big picture, you can see that happening, clear skies will be moving in, but the big storm, let's get to it, it's still occurring, they told you not to travel in new york. they told everybody they'll give them tickets if they see them on the roadways. they have the bull's eye now. washington had the heavier snow later.
6:16 pm
system moving up the coast. heavy winds. hurricane force wind gusts occurring up there with flooding. so it's a real mess. not so bad here. it could be a lot worse if we were up in new york city. but the backside of this system, producing a little bit of that light snow up to the northeast. and that will finally clear away. you see the clouds breaking a little bit through west virginia. and even in the western part of our state. so we will start to see some improvement. i've got mostly cloudy, maybe a couple more flurries in a few spots. at 9:00, 29 degrees, womens in the blue numbers --womens in the blue -- windchills in the blue numbers below that. the skies will clear. allowing the temperature to drop. 23 at 6:00 a.m. 26 at 9:00. above freezing at noon. the advisory goes away. up to 39 tomorrow. the clouds break after midnight. there's tomorrow morning, we wake up to clear skies but icy
6:17 pm
it'll be nice and sunny. tomorrow night however, despite the fact the winds will be gently out of the south, we're going back to the low 20s. expect delays on monday from that black ice advisory. i know the roads won't be cleared by then. and then on monday afternoon, we're in the 40s. our next weather maker, it's a cold front, it'll bring us rain. no wintery precipitation. maybe a brief shower late tuesday. but it's wednesday when we'll see our best chance of rain and you'll see that here coming up in the five-day. for tomorrow, 40 in sanford, 41 in fort bragg. 41 in dunn, 50 in wilson. 50 in smithfield. 39 in raleigh. 38 in durham. playoff weather for tomorrow in charlotte, be careful if you can leave after noon that's the time to drive. if you're going to go to the game. but be careful coming home. temperatures will be below freezing. but it'll be clear. so your forecast, 39 tomorrow. 22 i think we'll go above freezing after 11:00 or so in the morning. 46 on monday. watch out for that cold start.
6:18 pm
chance of a shower. wednesday, some rain. thursday, we could see a little coastal system give us some rain late in the day. but i'm going to keep the rain, maybe ending as flurry activity on friday. then we clear out. check out saturday. 56 degrees. yesterday's forecast, we said it'll be up to 33 today. we didn't quite get there. but we got there within a degree. so duke home care and hospice, another $100. up to 1900 for the month. >> bottom line is stay off the roads if you can. snow and ice were not
