your faithful prayers and gifts. good morning it is 30 degrees, 6 o'clock in the morning as we take a live look in wake county right now from our crew traveling around the triangle this sunday, j anuary 24, 2016. take you for watching this weekend edition of wncn today i am justin quesinberry >> and i am meteorologist, kristin ketchell. some black ice out there again this morning. >> that is our biggest concern right now. >> it is that refreeze from last night that we are dealing with this morning. >> we have team coverage of the winter weather striking our area. wncn laura haviland is out on the roads with everything you need to stay safe -- stay safe today. but first kristin ketchell has a forecastle your forecastle you can plan for monday morning. we are dealing with lack ice around the area but we are not seeing anything falling from the sky.

some pokes -- some folks picked up a next or engine some spots. we are dry and quiet this morning. we have a winter weather advisory in effect for most of central north carolina, and that is because of black ice that is out there. the weather service put out the advisory it is in effect until noon today. if you are traveling, this morning, be careful, though side roads and back roads those are going to be your biggest issues. 30 raleigh, 29 durham, 29 fayetteville, 25 in raeford, pinehurst and sanford. it is cold out there. if you factor in the window feels like it is even colder. it feels like 20 durham, 19 is the current windchill in roxborough. we have sunshine in the forecast for today. it will lead to sunny skies and lower temperatures we are finally melting around the area today. just some icy roads this morning. mostly sunny skies this afternoon. dirty 9 degrees today. a lot of melting will take place today. at that may lead to additional

morning. i will be back with a complete update on your forecast coming up in just a few minutes. ice and snow are coding the east coast with some places see near record-breaking snowfall. while it may be beautiful to look at, at least 18 people have died so far as a result of car crashes, snows -- snow shoveling and hypothermia. six of them here in north carolina. the winter surge brought many large cities to a standstill this weekend from new york,-- new york city to washington, dc. highways closed down yesterday. it will be a long dig out for millions. here in our area people are worried about the impact on the economy on the roadways. >> this stops everything. it stopped businesses for making money. >> it's been okay on the main highways, but if you get off the main highways, on the back streets it's a solid sheet of ice. that has not been fun. >> north carolina is one of several states under a state of

we want to take you live to the reds right now to give you an idea of what you can expect if you need to venture out t oday. mobile news tracker. what are you seeing out there right now? >>reporter:i can tell you from what i have seen so far, this morning, the roads are so much better and we will give you a live look right now we are on highway 55 in holly springs right now, we have had to travel quite a few wrote so far. as you all are aware of, dot has a system. they want to get to those interstates like 40 and four for 01st -- 441st you have to be careful for those little spots of black ice and that we keep warning all of you drivers out there about. again, you can see highway 55 seems to be most lee are for the most part as well. like you have said earlier this

and whatnot, are going to be not as much of a priority for dot. are those towns that are clearing the roads. i think the hardest part is really just getting in your car and then getting out of your driveway, your apartment complex and then those first roads that you are going to hit. it is not even at 32 degrees yet. those roads are still frozen. as kristin ketchell will probably talk about. it is going to warm up today. hopefully we can get some of the natural melting on the roads. we are on highway 55 in holly springs. we will give you another life look at the roads later on in the show. live in holly springs, laura haviland, wncn news now. >> things a lot. stay safe out there. yesterday we told you about the more hundred -- the more than 150,000 duke energy customers across north carolina. today that number is down to a little more than 55,000. that is a lot of household especially in this cold weather.

energy power outages not. all of those group triangles mean multiple outages in each area. in wake county alone more than 23,000 locations are in the dark. in johnston it is more than 14,000, and in cumberland county a little more than 1500. across the state, 56,000. power outages and slick roadways are the biggest concerns across the state heard yesterday governor mccrory warn people to stay at home if at all possible. for some, the threat of ice is not worth missing there saturday evening plans. but for others, the threat was very real. wncn's mario boone has more from durham. >>reporter:and just 48 hours, road conditions nosedived from treacherous to deadly. >> sadly, there has been two fatalities, two additional fatalities. >>reporter:bringing the total of storm related traffic return -- fatalities 26. state patrol said troopers have

some with injuries. i'm go durham transit had planned to start limited service at 10 a.m., yet conditions were so bad, that idea was quickly scrapped. but even that news did not stop a throng of fans who made their way to the -- to see a musical called matilda. >> we are new to the area from maine. we are kind of used to snowy weather. it wasn't too offputting for us. >>reporter:kami bates and drove in from raleigh for the show, and she admitted to me, there were some scary moments. >> there were a couple of slots that were pretty bad especially getting on and off the highway >>reporter:once they reached downtown durham they found road crews hard at work clearing streets, and sidewalks. bates said her strategy was to catch the show early, and race home for sunset. >> because it will get dark here soon enough and the roads will freeze back over >>reporter:i am mario boone,

your main roads should be fine this morning. still some icy patches out t here. keep that in mind. your side roads, back roads, secondary roads. those will be your biggest issues today. we are seeing clouds clearing out of here, nothing popping up in the way of wet or wintry weather this morning. we are dry, but we do have some threats for black ice out there. temperatures are below freezing, the national weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for all of the counties you see highlighted on the map here. that is for black ice and it continues through noon today. temperatures are below freezing everywhere this morning. 30 raleigh, 29 durham, 29 also in fayetteville, 31 clinton and goldsboro. an area of high pressure is building and that will lead to sunshine and warmer temperatures which will finally give us a chance to melt things around the area today. that should help alleviate black ice issues. 30degrees at eight, 33 by

look at to days top stories. a live look at the roads in wake county. the snow fall has stopped and when the sun comes out the ice will begin to melt today. for now black ice still lurks and state officials urge you to stay off the road, if you can't. with icy roads, icy runways. yesterday, the majority of flights into an out of rdu were canceled. today is arathi looking better for airplane passengers. remember to check your flight status before handing -- heading to the airport. while crews worked overtime to get power on for -- for more than 150,000 duke energy customers this weekend there are still nearly 53,000 households without lights or heat across north carolina. the counties hardest hit are wake in johnston. we are sad to report the death of jay stewart brian the third, he was chairman of media general, the company which owns wncn and 70 other tv stations around the country. he was the fourth generation of

business. brian's great-grandfather bought the richmond times dispatch in 1887. he said he believed the press played an important role in us history and he was proud to keep an eye on government. ryan joined media general's board in 1974 and was chairman since 1990. he was media general's ceo from 1990-2005. ryan is survived by his wife, two daughters, and five grandchildren. jon stewart brian was 77 years old. a group of young innovators are cleaning cars, and helping the environment all at the same time. as wncn's mike gonzales and these you and sees students show us the waterless buddy is "what's next" >> basically we sprayed on the car and wipe it off with a microfiber towel. it protects the car. it's eco- friendly. re/max bond from a childhood of

waterless buddies is a w aterless, on-demand carwash run by two unc chapel hill seniors. >> they tell us where they are, what car they have, their license plate, they can pay right online and then one of our buddies go out and wash the car exactly where they parked. we send you a before-and-after picture and it's as easy as that. it's good to get the car went first and the brandy comes in behind them busted out. >>reporter:using a little eco- friendly spray and a little elbow grease, they currently employ 10 fellow unc students as buddies washing cars through out the triangle and now they are looking to expand. >> if you need some work and want to make extra money it's a really easy way to do it. anyone can do it. >> since this, i have not washed the car with water. >>reporter:the carwash takes about 15 minutes to a half an hour. along with saving you time, it also saves you water. >> we say 45 gallons of water per wash.

those will melt today. the ice will likely melt off the trees today, and that will hopefully solve some of the issues on the roads as we head into this afternoon. our satellite and radar showing the all clear. we have a few clouds out there. the clouds are moving out and we have sunshine in the forecast for today. for this morning we do have a winter weather advisory for all of the counties you see highlighted on the map here that is for black ice and it lasts until new. your side roads, secondary roads, back roads, those will be the issue. because dot prioritizes those interstates and four-lane highways. it is those side roads that you are going to have the biggest issues. keep that in mind, take it slow if you have to drive. use extreme caution when you're driving over any service that looks wet this morning, because it will likely be black ice. 30degrees raleigh, 29 durham, 28 lewisburg, 29 rocky mount, 29 also in fayetteville.

around the region low freezing. there is likely some ice out there. as we head through this morning, eventually we will rise above freezing by about lunch time we are looking at a temperature of 33 degrees. a few clouds early, then they move out. sunshine and the forecast today and check this out high temperatures and finally above freezing, 39 degrees. that may still feel cold out there but it is enough to melt a lot of the ice and snow that we had yesterday and during the day on friday. we have this big area of high pressure moving in that will lead to warmer temperatures which means ice and snow starts to melt today. tonight, clear skies will cause our temperatures to fall very quickly down to the 20s. morning icy spots tomorrow definitely a possibility. then we have more sunshine and a warmer afternoon heading our way. temperatures tomorrow going to be warmer than they were across the area today. increasing clouds in the forecast for tuesday, high temperatures feeling fantastic in the 50s, that is going to feel incredible compared to the cold weather we have been dealing with the past couple of

front which will move to the area late tuesday into wednesday providing us with plain old r ain. it is going to be rain the middle of this week. 39 raleigh, can at a high of 38 durham, 40 in fayetteville with mostly sunny skies today. you may have heard, there is a big football game tonight. carolina panthers taking on the arizona cardinals at home in charlotte. expect a cold and dry game with clear skies. if you are heading to the game, please be careful, again, charlotte had ice and snow, too. 37degrees at kickoff, 33 degrees for that last play. winds staying light at about three-6 miles per hour at kick off tonight around 6:40 p.m. should be a good game. hopefully arizona cannot handle the cold. 21degrees tonight, it will refreeze, winds are going to die down a little bit, definitely keep in mind we may

again early tomorrow morning. it melts in the afternoon. temperatures really warm tomorrow, compared to today, 46 degrees. down to 32 degrees monday night, so right at that freezing mark. any ice and snow left is going to melt quickly by tuesday. high temperature tuesday 50 for degrees, 44 wednesday, we have that next cold front moving in and a chance of rain wednesday, a few more rain showers possible on thursday with a high temperature of 40, and we are back in the 40s and 50s through friday, and the start of next weekend on saturday. what a difference a week will make. we will go from temperatures in the 30s with a snow and ice this weekend, by next weekend we are talking highs in the 50s. definitely going to be a nice change. >> that 56 looking good to a lot of people. coming up, after the break, nc state took on duke on the ic's day in the triangle since last winter.

temperatures are finally going to get above freezing. that will help melt a lot of that ice and snow that we have been dealing with since the weekend started. here is a live look outside from our camera on top of the hill restaurant in chapel hill area chapel hill looking okay road wise, a lot of snow and ice off to the sides and any spot that looks wet, i would definitely treat it as black ice this morning. we do have some black ice issues especially on those side and backwards. you will run into some problems this morning. it is looking dry, which is a huge change from yesterday when we will do -- when we were dealing with some snow we do have a winter weather advisory, in effect, until noon today that is for black ice. definitely be careful if you have to travel this morning. those side roads and secondary roads, and back roads, those are where you will find your biggest problems this morning. most of our main roads are actually in fairly good shape and you still may run into some icy patches out there. as i mentioned, treat any spot

be very careful on the roads. 30 raleigh, 29 durham and fayetteville, 28 wellington, 31 clinton and goldsborough, 29 in rocky mount. temperatures below freezing, that is only going to last through this morning and the temperatures rise into the upper 30s to near 40 today. we have sunshine in the f orecast, temperatures are warmer, we are finally going to get some melting going on. that is thanks to this area of high pressure clearing out the clouds. a pretty nice afternoon and that will mean we will have a chance to melt a lot of that ice and snow. expect temperatures around 30 degrees at 8 o'clock, 33 at lunch time, 39 by 3 p.m. falling to 35 degrees as we had through tonight. and even warmer temperatures in the forecast for tomorrow. i will have all of the details coming up in just a few minutes. justin. >> takes a lot. the ice and the snow that you see out your window stretches from here, west to kentucky and tennessee and north all the way up the east coast. behind me is a look at central park in new york city.

that is the second highest amount to stack up there since snowfall records began in 1869. and while many are out enjoying the snow, the cold, and the ice have also proven dangerous. at least 18 people have died so far. a result of car crashes, snow shoveling and hypothermia. six of them right here in north carolina. let's take a look at some of the places hardest hit by this blast of this is a live look at times square am a popular tourist spot in new york city. i was there just a few days ago. people are out walking because that is one of the only ways they can get around the big apple right now. aboveground public transportation shutdown yesterday, and we are expecting an announcement anytime now as to when that will start back up again. back here at home, we did not get as much snow as our neighbors to the north, but ice is our big concern. we want to give you a live look at the roads this morning. laura haviland is writing in the wncn mobile news tracker.

right now? >>reporter:before i show you what the roads look like, i will just give you a quick hint, and let you guess as to what they look like. i spoke with state highway patrol earlier this morning, and they say it is kind of like a normal day for them, just 24 hours ago they had more than state. take a look we are on nc 42, not really having any problems so far, but we are seeing some patches weather it's on a highway, or a secondary road. as kristin ketchell mansion, when you see those patches, it may look wet, that could be a concern for black ice which could be very tricky when you are in the car. of course, for dot and those other crews working on this winter storm, their first priorities were the interstates. what we have seen for the most part they are completely clear,

i think the toughest part is going to be getting out of your driveway and those roads that you are going to hit as you leave your house, if you are heading out. as you can see, it is looking like a beautiful sunrise this morning. we are hoping that the sun, when it does eventually show up this morning that we can finally get some natural melting. we are in wake county this morning. back to you. >> thanks a lot. emergency crews are working overtime, this weekend, to get more than 150,000 households, without power, back on the grid. a little more than 36 hours at duke energy cut that number by one third. here are the latest duke energy outage numbers. in wake county alone just less than 20,000 locations are in the dark. in johnston county more than 14,000. in cumberland county a little more than 1500, and across the state of 53,000.

wake and johnston counties are seeing the most power outages, nash county also feeling the impact of downed trees and power lines. crew spent the better part of yesterday tackling five polls that went down in one place. i travel to the town of bailey where that happened and spoke with a family there whose power went out on friday. >> it is crazy, you take the little things for granted. it's tough. electricity around 6 p.m. afternoon he borrowed a generator from a friend to continue to power through the outage. >> we actually just hooked it up now. i have a freezer going on it, refrigerator and stuff like that. >>reporter:he lives in bailey near the spot on nc 581 rise and ice entries brought down five utility poles. >> this is a significant restoration. >>reporter:duke energy had a 30 person crew working to replace poles and lines there and restore power to the 500-1000 customers impacted.

hard. i appreciate them. man, apparently there are five polls down. wow. a mac a duke energy spokesperson said it could take about six hours to clean this up, and restore power here. but, statewide, it could be monday evening before everyone has electricity again. >> we won our customers to be aware that we are working hard, it is a multi- day event and it could go -- restoration could go over the next couple of days. >> i am just thankful that we have a roof over our heads, and have what we do have. you know, i know it will be back up and we when i think about it in a year or two. >> alright, let's go to a live look at our rdu international airport camera. yesterday, snow and ice kept most of the runways closed there and today passengers can expect more delays and cancellations. yesterday, there were more flights canceled their then made it into the air.

are sending welcome back, a restaurant in buffalo, new york is having a little bit of fun with people's reactions to this weekend's winter storm. you can see the sign there, it reads, if buffalo got 2 feet of snow it would be called tuesday, just another normal winter day for upstate new york. quite the blizzard for a lot of other folks in the mid atlantic and the northeast. kind of a humorous sign there. buffalo typically sees a lot of lake effect snow they are used to seeing these prolonged snow events where they get one-2 feet of snow. but for folks in new york city, it caused them to shut down basically the entire city yesterday. >> it does not take much to shut us down here. >> it really doesn't.

sticking with us all day today. we will see a few clouds this morning, with a lot of sunshine this afternoon. our high topping out at 39 degrees. we do fall into the 20s again tonight. temperatures will be falling fast and cause some of that melting ice and snow to refreeze across the area tonight. we do have warmer temperatures, and some ice and snow. we will have a chance to melt today. thanks to the sunshine in this area of high-pressure building and that will keep our skies fairly clear today. all things considered, it has been a mess if you days around the area, conditions are improving for today, tomorrow and even into tuesday. tomorrow morning expect some icy spots on the roads in the morning, but warmer temperatures in the afternoon. our highs are going to be back in the 40s as we head into tomorrow. tuesday, we do have increasing clouds in the forecast, high temperatures going to warm up all the way into the 50s. it is going to be a pretty nice day on tuesday. temperatures in the 50s going to feel fantastic out ahead of this cold front that will move

into wednesday dividing us with the rain. no wintry weather in the forecast for tuesday, if we do see any precipitation, late tuesday, it will fall in the form of rain. a high today in and raleigh 39, 38 durham, 40 and fayetteville. tonight, arizona cardinals are in town charlotte taking on the carolina panthers. a little bit call for the game. if you are heading out that way, definitely bundle up for the game. keep in mind around the charlotte area they also had a little bit of ice and snow, too. be careful on some of those roads. dirty 7 degrees at kickoff, the last play looking at a temperature of about 33 degrees. winds out of the southwest three-6 miles per hour. hopefully arizona cannot handle the cold weather. kick off at 6:40. the snow and ice around our area here will refreeze and a lot of spots. temperatures falling to 21 degrees, a very cold night heading our way. our seven day forecast has temperature staying cold during the morning hours here for at

mornings, pretty warm in the afternoon. 39 today, turns into 46 tomorrow, but again keep in mind we are starting things off at 21 degrees. we follow 32 monday night and up to 50 for on tuesday. i warm day on tuesday. the next cold front comes in late tuesday into wednesday. we are going to see a chance for some rain with a cold the cold front, and then even though it is going to derive some colder temperatures we are talking highs in the 40s for w ednesday, thursday and friday. the wet weather comes to an end on thursday. we dry things out on friday, with a high of 46. saturday, looking pretty fantastic to start next weekend. how does 56 degrees and mostly sunny skies sound? i think we will take it after this messy weekend we have had here. >> sounds good to me. i don't know about the school kids out there how they will feel about that >>reporter:i am ready for. >> i think a lot of the ice and snow will melt and refreeze today and into tonight i would not be surprised if we have school delays and cancellations tomorrow. we will have updates here during the morning hours

you're taking a life look, at the biltmore estate in asheville. there is no coating the ground, and there is snow on the estate there. they had a lot of snow in the mountains. current temperature there is 18 degrees. it is cold in charlotte this morning. a live look at unc charlotte's campus there. the moon is actually out, but eventually we will see some sunshine there as well. current temperature 21 degrees. and south of asheville we do have a camera here in hendersonville it is 21 degrees there, and you can see a lot of packed snow and some ice still on the roads. if you are traveling, around the state today, keep in mind not all roads around the region going to be clear. take it slow and take your time. >> my parents near asheville had a little more than half an inch there. a lot of snow up there. the snow and ice melted here yesterday but freezing temperatures overnight mean plenty of slick spots while some road still have not been cleared. wncn zamora haviland is

morning to give us a look at what you can expect if you have to venture out today. good morning. >>reporter:definitely not as big of a headache when it comes to driving as we saw yesterday. let's take a live look outside we are on south saunders street in the city of raleigh. a lot of clearing has happened in the past 24 hours. we are still finding patches of snow and ice the cousin is still so cold. there is a potential for black ice. if it does seem like a wet spots, in the row, treat it as if it were black ice just in case. but are to be safe than sorry. this is south saunders street or the power was down yesterday and all lights are back and working this morning. i think the biggest problems that we are going to have our on those back roads and a lot a lot of these roads, especially the interstates like 40 and for hundred and 40 most of the clearing and the ice are now gone. i know that crews will still be at it again today.
