long night ahead, we are going to get very, very cold again. that's the bad news. so the slush and the stuff that's around is going to refreeze. right now we are 39 in raleigh, 41 fayetteville, 34 louisberg. as we put these numbers through the night you are going to see them drop into the 20s by the time you head out this morning. there is going to be icy spots on roads. tomorrow afternoon back in the upper 40s. the forecast hour by hour for tonight 38 degrees at 7:00. still some melting. 35 at 8:00. between eight and nine we go back below freezing and we will income the 20s. overnight tonight, hey, there could be a little bit of fog, maybe if there is enough moisture close to the ground. areas where there is sleet and snow on the ground. otherwise, mostly clear. cold tomorrow morning. 20s south hill. virginia 23. raleigh 27. 24 rocky mountain. it's going to freeze tonight.

officially there is no black ice advisory. that doesn't mean there won't be black ice on spots of the roads. be very careful out there. well, despite the melt ag cross most of the area, several schools have canceled class for tomorrow. so far wake, durham, orange, chapel hill, carrboro, chatum, vance, franklin and person county schools are closed. also wake tech. be sure to check wncn.com and your wncn news now mobile app for updates. we expect them to be coming in through the night. traditional calendar students in wake and durham counties have class on monday, february 15. year round students on tracks one, two, three have classes on saturday, april 2nd. despite the thawing, several

area remain without power tonight. in spring lake dozens of residents have been in the dark since friday. wncn's nate rogers caught up with some of them. >> reporter: no power. folks freezing inside of their homes. having to throw away food. that's what many residents in spring lake are experiencing since friday night's storm. >> i was on my computer playing with one of my games and we lost power and that was it. kept thinking it would come back on. >> reporter: two days later, still no relief after friday's freezing rain covered power lines with ice. residents still without power sunday morning. every home here in the 1600 block of present drive in spring lake impacted. >> it's been missouri ms -- miserable. wrap up in a blanket. >> i can't do nothing. i can't watch the football game, you know. i can't eat. >> reporter: we spotted crews

officials say first workers must remove tree limbs. they will then repair the line and hopefully restore service. >> it's frustrating because when i called friday they said that dispatched a crew out here to make the repairs and they never game. >> reporter: he says his power went out saturday. compared to his neighbors facing the third day without electricity, it's not the end of the worldability i got a truck. if i get cold, i sit in the truck. >> reporter: as crews work, it's unknown when power will be back on. duke energy says they hope to have everything restored by 12 noon tomorrow. nate rogers, wncn news now. well, this was scene after a broken water main forced the closure after section of wade avenue between dixie trail and brooks avenue for several hours today. it happened about 8:00 this morning. wade avenue re-opened about 2:00 this afternoon. and check this out.

truck and an ambulance got stuck on the ice while responding to a call at a local apartment complex. crews with wake forest fire department and ems tried a shovel, pick and sand but the trucks wouldn't budge. another emergency crew had to respond to the call and a tow truck was finally used to get the ambulance and fire truck out of the lot. the durham rescue mission continues their warm shelter operation tonight and tomorrow. more than 400 men, women and children have been staying there each night this winter storm. more than 30 had to sleep on the floor. we talked with one man. he says the snow finally drove him it to go to the shelter. he plans not only to spend the night but enroll in his recovery program. >> my past has the not been that great. i come here to change my life and turn my life around for the better and to get out of the

weather, you know, to better myself. and these people here, it's available and they do help a lot of people. >> the durham rescue mission says it cost $2.05 to provide a meal and it could use donations of both money and food. well, a live look behind me at times square. a much different scene than last night. millions are digging their way out. highway crews are plowing. some air travelers are still stuck with thousands of flights canceled. nbc's jennifer johnson has the latest. >> reporter: the sounds of recovery as the dig-out from the monster blizzard begins. blue skies and quiet winds a welcome change from the whiteout that paralyzed millions. >> it's not that heavy wet stuff. it's really not that bad cleaning up. >> reporter: it will be days before life gets back to normal. tractor-trailer trucks and hundreds of cars need to be removed from highways from pennsylvania to kentucky. hundreds of thousands of people are still without power. >> there is a great deal of work

to conduct damage assessment and recover from a weather event of this severity. >> reporter: new york's airports are open, but the two washington area airports remain closed. rail service along theeast coast is limited. coastal flooding is improving. governors are still urging people to stay off the roads. >> the travel ban has been lifted. that does not mean people should go out and take a ride and see the sights. >> reporter: in virginia, a buried fire hydrant hamperedders to save this house. this church in pennsylvania and the washington redskins training facility, a friendly snowfall in dupont circle, sledding around the u.s. capitol, a paralyzed east coast is finally moving again. hundreds of schools are canceled classes for monday and congress has canceled votes scheduled for tuesday and wednesday postponing

this started as $1 billion dream for several people in johnston county and ended with a act of kindness. wncn's lauren half lin has our story. >> everybody was excited about trying to win. >> reporter: so excited that several people in clayton, each put in $10. with more than $5,000 in hand, they bought several lottery tickets the which they hoped would up their chances of winning. >> tonight's jackpot is approaching. >> reporter: they didn't win the billion dollars, but they did win over 300. too little to div i have up, they decided. their plan. donate it. days later in the same community clayton firefighters responded to this home. as you can see, the blaze gutted it. >> i thought we had -- we didn't have anything. >> reporter: ten-year-old isaiah johnson, his mom and younger brother weren't home at the time but their belongings were destroyed.

>> we have decided to give her all the money that is left over from the winnings. >> reporter: community members donated all of this. >> clothes and food and water and all kinds of gift cards and money. >> reporter: for a tight-knit community they didn't think twice about it. >> it felt great to help my friend out. >> help them get back to some form of normalcy in their lives and rebuild from pretty much a total loss of everything they own in their home. >> reporter: for isaiah an his family, they couldn't be more thankful. >> i was really grateful. at first i thought we lost it all, and then we got some new stuff. >> such great generosity from the community there into here this is another remarkable story. this making the rounds on social media. a gainesville, florida police officer responding to a noise complaint over kids playing basketball ended up joining the game. the story gets better from there.

kids he would bring backup next time. basketball legend shaquille o'neal showed up. police say shaq specifically said he wanted to keep the visit quiet to surprise the kids and officer white. take a look the that. shaq playing basketball right there in gainesville. pretty cool stuff there. well, speaking of basketball, the tar heels pulled off their 11th straight win in blacksburg, virginia. the game against virginia tech bass moved 3:00 because of the weather. second ranked unc is 7-0 in acc play and 18-2 on the year. johnson 19 point and 17 rebounds in a 75-70 win. up next unc hosts boston college. we are only about 20 minutes away from the nfc championship game in charlotte. the panthers are gearing up to take the field with tens of thousands of fans ready to cheer them on. wncn's todd gibson is in the middle of all the excitement. he has our story from charlotte.

we will be melting at noon and mostly sunny at 5:00. tomorrow -- tuesday's gonna be the mildest day. 56 degrees. wednesday that's your rainy day. see the dot, dot, dot? i have rainy time after midnight. when you head out to work or school wednesday morning, rain will be around, rain will be likely, temperatures in the 40s. then on thursday we could see a little bit of rain from a southern system. that little chance of rain might give a few flakes of snow north. that's about it. we are not looking at a winter system. it will be a chilly rain on thursday. friday we clear out and, yeah, you're not deceiving yourself. yesterday we had saturday sunny and 56. i kept that the same. and sunday a week from today will be near 60. this is not, you know, at least -- at least we erred on the right side. i was thinking with the snow on the ground, maybe the airport scraped it away. that reflects. it's hard to get out of the 30s. i went the 39. the high today was 47.
