>> nice talking to you. the wintry blast continues to impact north carolina with widespread power outages and icy roads have thousands of kids out of school today. the latest on the forecast and the roads before you head out. thanks for watching wncn at 11:00. i am glad you are with us. let's begin with the latest on the weather report. let's check with alyssa campanella orfont. >> good morning. we are started with icy conditions but we are above freezing. we are at 43 with a mix of sun and clouds. i will be honest, we are holding onto more cloud cover than i thought so we'll call it partly cloudy as we head into the afternoon. i will show you what we are dealing with on our satellite and radar composite. you see across the state, a few clouds from time to time, nothing that will have a negative impact on your forecast but it is something you will notice throughout the course of the day.

temperatures. we are at 43 raleigh, 44 do you mean, henderson is 42 and 37 in rocks borrow. at the opposite end of the area,s are in the upper 40s around fayetteville this morning. as far as your fast forecast is concerned we'll hang with 43 at lunch and 50 our afternoon high compared to the normal of 52. we are back to 44 by 6:00 p.m. for the evening drive home. i will let you know when warmer temperatures arrive and when you will need the umbrella again coming up in your complete forecast. >> 50 sounds great. thanks. team coverage of the winter weather continues. let's look toroth right now. if we head to durham, i-40 and nc54. emma wright has been checking out the conditions all morning and joins us live with an update. how is it looking, emma?

checking out road conditions early this morning, around 4:30. that's when things were really looking slick. around 9:00 when things started to warm up, it started to look better. we are on mill brook, an area that's usually a little slick. it was earlier today, but you can see it is clear except for a few piles of snow on the edge of the road. we will show you some video we shot an hour or two hours ago in durham and the snow was really thick. we were trying to get uphill and we were slipping and sliding all around the ice and snow that had compacted to several inches of thick ice on the road. we talked with drivers who say they were out and about yesterday and this morning. they say yesterday was worse but this morning was treacherous too. they definitely took it slow when they were on their way to work. >> still pretty rough in the certain intersections where the

and plowed snow into corners. in parking lots or intersections, it's rough around the corners. >> the road we live on, it was bad. they're bad. too. we went through the new sheets and there was a big 18 wheeler. hill. >> reporter: we are giving you another live look at mill brook in raleigh. i wouldn't be over confident when out driving. some roads in neighborhoods are still very slick and we have seen plows out and about putting out salt and sand and plowing what's left of the snow and ice. >> thanks for the update. following friday's storm several thousand people are still without power at this hour. here is a live look at the duke energy outage map. the numbers are getting better. nearly 3000 are still without power in wake and just over

several homes were impacted all weekend long. before restoring power to the area workers had to remove tree limbs that had fallen on power lines. >> it's been miserable, very miserable. i sleep in pajamas, sweatpants, hoodies, wrap up in a blanket. >> duke energy hopes to have the power restored to spring lake by noon. snow and ice are keeping travelers grounded up and down the eastern sea board. the weather kept most run ways closed this weekend and today passengers can expect more delays and cancellations. justin quesinberry is live. how is it going? >> reporter: i spoke with a spokesman that says things are mostly back on track. take a look at the boards. you can see that the exceptions are the airports that were most affected by the snowstorm, dc

some cancellations and flights delayed to those airports and from those airports. he says it is a fluid situation because those airports are in the process of getting back up and running. there is no firm number as to how many flights are still affected. on a normal day, there are about 500 flights that come in and out of rdu. the airport is getting there. today is an improvement for travelers coming through rdu. over the weekend ice and snow kept most flights out of the air. i talked with a broncos fan that flew to and from denver and an apex woman that had a business trip to new york. >> before we left we tried to cancel our flights because we thought we wouldn't get the work done. they didn't cancel and they were charging us and we said "oh what the heck, let's just go." we had an important meeting. we did fine. >> you are one of the few people that didn't have a

>> i am glad i was able to make it out but i was definitely sweating it for sure. >> rdu officials urge anyone with a flight scheduled today to call ahead or check online. you can look on wncn.com under the weather tab. >> justin, glad to see things are better out there. thanks for the report. from north carolina to new york, freezing temperatures are slowing removal of record snow fall. tens of thousands are still digging out from the suburbs of washington to the outskirts of new york city. look at the amount of snow on the ground at the u.s. capitol. some places are still dealing with more than 30 inches of snow. >> the roads are okay. main roads are great, open, flowing. a lot of spots haven't been touched. there is a lot of mess out there. >> at least 30 deaths have been

many are from traffic accidents and others came from heart attacks related to shoveling snow after the snow fell. a historic landmark was reduced to nothing but rubble under the weight of all the snow. the theater was built 70 years ago and suffered a total roof collapse as well as the total loss of a wall and partial loss of two others. the remaining structure will be demolished. areas of new york city continue to dig out as well. these pictures are from long island. you see major snow blanketing roads and buildings. it will be several days before crews can clear all the main and secondary roads. keep up with the latest headlines and forecasts as well on the wncn news now app. it's absolutely free for your apple or android device. rob son county deputies investigating the death of a 7 year old who was attacked by a pit bull and killed.

they found the seven year old unresponsive and his eight year old brother severely injured. an investigation is ongoing. crime alert from duke university. two men pulled out guns and robbed a student. this happened around 1:00 am. after taking several personal items the suspects took off in a red truck or suv. north carolina's voter i.d. law is set to go to trial. the current legislation will be reviewed in a federal court room. under legislation, voters are required to provide some form of identification to verify identity at the polls. critics climb that the law pro vents lower income voters who cannot afford a driver's license or credit card from having their voices heard. presidential candidates making a final push before iowa. the first votes will be cast in the state a week from today.

that meant the world to a clayton family. a group of neighbors pooled money for powerball tickets. when they didn't win, they donated what they did win to a family who lost a lot in a house fire. >> i felt great to help my friend out. >> over $300 in winnings were donated to buy clothes, food, gift cards as well as money. >> i was really grateful. at first i thought we lost it all. >> that was 10 year old isaiah johnson. luckily his family wasn't home at the time of the fire. panthers fans are celebrating this morning. the late 4th quarter interception and touchdown puts finishing touches on a great game for the panthers. one fan was so excited that he fell out of the stands.

>> i am a wing and dip gal. >> i know. i gain ten pounds every super bowl. >> we don't even talk about that. 50 sounds so much better than what we have been through. >> it certainly sounds like a heat wave. this is raleigh. you can barely make out the parking lot. it is certainly safe that students and teachers are still home this morning and into the afternoon. we have blue skies trying to peek through the clouds as we head throughout the course of the day. that's what's going to warm us up nicely. 43 raleigh, 44 durham, upper 40s around fayetteville and clinton, raiford, 48. sanford, you are in the upper 30s at 38 degrees. compare these temperatures to 24 hours ago. we are already five degrees warmer than we were yesterday at this time, a similar situation in durham. the more impressive numbers are from sand the sandhills.

warmer than you were yesterday at lunchtime andre ford is 14 -- and raiford is 14 degrees warmer. 43 noon, 4:72, 50 is our afternoon high. it sounds like a heat wave. we haven't been in the 50s for a week or week and a half, 44 at 6:00 p.m. we are continuing to drop. we should be around 40 by 8:00 this evening. high pressure is continuing to pump in a southerly breeze which means plenty sunshine and warmer temperatures as well. that we know leads to more melting throughout the day. tomorrow we'll focus on a cold front to our west. i don't think it brings rain until say tuesday night or wednesday. tuesday should be dry. we'll see a mixture of sun and clouds throughout the day. i will walk you through your future forecast. we are still looking at a decent amount of sunshine, clear skies to partly cloudy conditions around sunset and overnight tonight we will call

i said that cold front will be coming closer to the state through tuesday. we'll start with partly cloudy skies. into the afternoon, you can see the showers towards the mountains. those are not making it into our area until tuesday night or wednesday morning. that's when things start to change for us. in the meantime, plenty melting and 50s today and tomorrow. 50 is our high in raleigh, 49 durham, 54 in fayetteville. tonight, anything that's liquid will refreeze in some spots. it's not going to be area wide but in raleigh i am expecting us to hover around freezing and that's 32 degrees. as we head into the coming days, i promised the 50s. 56 tomorrow. i really like the sights of that. 46 wednesday with a cold front coming through. that's going to drop temperatures back to around 43 thursday. we will start to rebound again though. friday we'll be at 51. then just look at next weekend.

gorgeous with 50s to near 60 both saturday and sunday. we have our crew out driving around on the roadways. i will pass it to emma wright. where are you and how are the roads looking? >> reporter: all morning long we have been talking about the main road looking good and secondary roads still needing a little bit of work. this is an example of what we are talking about. we are on a neighborhood that's off of mill brook road. you can see there is a good bit of snow and ice in the middle of the road. it is slick, slipping and sliding as you try to make your way up this hill. it's not a steep hill but there is enough ice for it to be a little bit treacherous. obviously this isn't going to cause major back ups. it isn't on the belt line or anything like that. it does make hassle for the folks in the neighborhood with a lot of road like this throughout the triangle,

you are out and about driving around this afternoon. >> thanks so much. that ice can be treacherous. >> mistreat still looks like that. >> so does mine. thanks. a great story here, durham rescue center continuing warming shalter operations today. more than 400 men, women, children are staying at the mission. there are so many that more than 30 had to sleep on the floor. it costs $2.05 to provide a meal. they can always use donations, money and food. hover boards have been banned from colleges and store shelves.
