days after snow and sleet, some roads are still dangerous keeping kids out of school again this morning. and in the wake of this weekend's weather, we've got the good doctor, dr. campbell notice house, to talk about staying healthy in the cold weather. we got you covered. good morning. thank you for watching wncn i'm stefan chase. >> and i'm mike gonzalez. we begin with school closings and delays once again. >> that's right. wake county and chapel hill are operating on a three-hour delay and moore county is own a two- hour delay. let's get you over to meteorologist alyssa corfont who has some good news. i do. we have a warmup headed our way. we could be close to 60 this afternoon. and we'll stay dry one more day before the rain showers arrive tonight and tomorrow.

not a lot going on across our area. and isolated shower in the mountains. it is cold enough for some of to you deal with some black ice and others are well above freezing. and we're at 38 and 34 in louisburg and rocky mount. i know some of your neighbors have areas of ice. and clock at clay ton. everything that was liquid last night has refroze. and freezing conditions in sanford and 35 in littleton this morning. so let's get to your forecast. the patchy black ice this morning not as widespread of a problem as yesterday. 36 today and 52 at noon and 58 the afternoon high today. that looks nice and we're still in the 50s at 6:00 p.m. no rain in today's forecast but it could be here tonight. i'll let you know when it arrives for your neighborhood coming up in your forecast. and now let's check in with traffic. this is south sounders and south wilmington street, south

not a lot going on. still early on this tuesday morning. we have an accident. and i told about this about a half hour ago on cary i40 westbound at 291 and that it cary town boulevard. be aware. it doesn't look like it is causing ma delays just yet. we'll keep you updated on traffic and weather in a couple of minutes. today many school districts in central north carolina are canceled or did he laid because of the -- delayed because of the ice and snow on the roadways. emma wright is at the scene of a water main break in wake forest. how is it looking out there right now? >> reporter: the water shut off t is on 700 block of durham road in wake forest. they think because it was of the cold weather. they said the freezing and the thawing and frees it caused one of the pipes to burst. it looks like it happened at at the end of one of the people's

a police officer saw it doing a routine patrol. and they got the crew it's turn the water off and the other folks will come out here and repavement there's a pretty sizeable hole on durham road. but it looks like it took out the end of someone's driveway. durham road, and the 700 block in wake forest is shut down till they get this repaired. you want to keep that in mind. it is early. so it doesn't look like it is causing any traffic issues right now. but something to keep in mind when you head out the door. reporting live in wake forest, emma wright, wncn news. thank you. another big concern besides the roads, power outages. duke energy spent yesterday trying to get the last of its customers back on line. and the number is down to

any state laws were violated in the process that left the city's drinking water contaminated with led. governor snyder has been subpoenaed. and families in flint concerned about their exposure to led can be tested for free. screenings will begin later today at a local elementary school there. and the tests are available for children up to the age of 6. additional led testing has been scheduled for the first week of next month. we investigate and we have uncovered new information surrounding water contamination locally in wake forest. more than three years ago, families learned they were they were drinking water that was contaminated with cancer- causing chemicals. and one of the companies involved in the situation has agreed to develop a plan to clean the groundwater that tainted the wells. they have sent letters to the families of that been affected and they have 30 days to

this is a live picture at the airport as we start off our tuesday morning. and not a lot going on this morning. some of the neighborhood streets icy in spots. but in the triangle, we're starting to see a lot of things starting to melt. and we're tracking a line of showers back to our west. and they extend from ohio back to mississippi. and the line of showers associated with the cold front will be here tomorrow, bringing us cooler temperatures and the chance for rain. in the meantime today, not looking so bad as all. 38 in raleigh, 34 in durham and louisburg. and the temperatures are dropping below freezing in siler city at 30. so the areas that are in the 20s this morning saw plenty of melting yesterday and everything could refreeze in the overnight. so be on the lookout.

to spread across the more lie done and plenty of cars out there. not a lot going on. maybe around south hill, virginia, you're waking up to a few extra clouds and back to the west, a few sprinkles move nothing boone. but other than that, it will be a quiet morning for us. let me show you the big picture. i was talking about the cold front. it is back to the west today. and it will move through as we head into tonight and tomorrow. ahead of it, nice south early breeze bringing in unseasonally warm temperatures. how do the 50s sound? i'm talking the upper 50s too. so 38 at 8:00 a.m., 44 at 10:00 and the 50s at lunchtime. we keep on climbing up to 58 later this afternoon and back to 52 for the evening drive tomorrow. so we're ahead of that cold front. not a lot changing today. partly cloudy skies as we head into the afternoon.

to see cloudy conditions and around midnight, we'll start to see a few showers. but the temperatures will be above freezing. so i'm not expecting any snow, sleet or freezing rain. just cold rain through the day on wednesday. and you'll notice 8:00 a.m. some of you could see a few showers and others will be dry and we'll hang with the same pattern as we head into the afternoon. not a washout, but not as pretty as yesterday was or is today. so let's get to the temperatures right now. if you're getting ready to head out the door. there are some of you well below freezing. sanford 26 and rayford 28 and raleigh we're at 38 and also 38 in henderson and 34 in durham. continuing is a good rule of thumb. if you see the roads shining, treat it as ice. so be safe on the way out the door. 58 in raleigh, 57 in durham and 51 in fayetteville.

looking really nice, six degrees warmer than yesterday. and we're back into the low 50s by 6:00 p.m. and i'll let you know when you'll need the umbrella again in your complete forecast. this is i440 and six forks road. no problems to report. no trouble spots but more cars. we have an accident in southeast portions of durham county on davis drive and right near the intersection of i40. it looks like it involves an overturned vehicle in durham, the south eastern portions of it on davis drive and near i40. we'll washing to get more information on this for you. back to mike and stephan. the winter weather may have hit a few days ago but its affects are still -- effects are still hanging around in our area. >> sure is.

checking things out for us. >> reporter: this is the 700 block of durham road. and the cold temperature caused a pipe po burst. the freezing and thawing that we have seen over the past few days is not good for the pipes. it immediate a hole down there. a wake forest cop found the water main break. he was driving by on a routine patrol this is more at the foot of someone's driveway. there's a pretty significant hole. but it looks like it goes a couple feet down. they turned the water off. but they have to wait for more people to get out here before they can fix it they have part of durham road shut down and road. it does not seem to be causing too much of a traffic backup just yet at this hour of the morning. but it is something that you

heading in this direction. reporting live in wake forest, emma wright, wncn news. some ice is covering roads and streets allege parking lots in -- streets and parking lots in the area and they hope that the warmer temperatures will get rid of ice for good. if you think kids in the triangle had it rough, think again. kids in queens new york had to good to school yesterday but they had a lot of trouble getting there. check this out. this school bus got stuck in the snow at an intersection. and people complained that the city was not moving fast enough to get streets clear and get them back to work. storm mess from this monster storm killed several people and reached millions of dollars so far.

inpassable. in washington d.c., the government shut down again. and public transit slow moving, if novembering at all. and several states are operating under states of emergencies, including here in north carolina. a lockdown is lifted after an overnight hunt for a gunman on a state college campus. a person with a gun was seen in the student activity center at winston-salem state university. the suspect fled and no shots were fired and the lockdown ended just after 1:00 this morning. right now the search is on for the person accused of robbing a duke university student. it happened around wanna maker and chapel drive. the student was not if i cannily hurt and the duke school sent out a crime alert to student, staff and faculty members. a fire forced 17 people out

the firefighters responded to the complex on shady lawn court around 8:00 last night. and the fire damaged one apartment and smoke and water damaged another seven units. two people had to jump from the apartment to escape the fire and the crews took people to an investigation is underway after a dog attack in robertson county spilled a 7- year-old boy and we want to warn that you some of the disturbing. so the boy and three of his siblings were playing in a field behind their home in lumberton and three dogs came running after them. and his brother said that he jumped on the top of a near car but his younger brother could not get away and one of the dogs, that was a pit-bull tackled the little boy. >> it doesn't feel fair at all t don't.

i didn't get a chance to hold my baby. >> so devastating and the property owner did not want to speak to us on the camera and he thinks that the kids aggravated the dogs some how. and the pit-bull died at the scene and the child's parents were told that they cannot have any unsupervised visits with the children -- during the investigation. a suspect is in the hospital accused of opening fire outside of a gastonia mall near east ridge mall. 19-year-old jamar hill eventually jumped off a 25-foot retaining wall and seriously hurt before he was finally caught. no one else injured. the department of public health is investigating an inmate's death. 29-year-old matthew mccain was found unresponsive inside his cell.

and siler -- rayford. siler city close to 30 degrees. 38 the 8:00 and 44 at 10:00. and the 50s are here at lunchtime. and 52 was the afternoon high yesterday. we get warmer today, 58 the expected high. back into the low 50s as we head towards 6:00 this morning. so the big picture, and the reason we're still warm is we're still dealing with the south early breeze and the cold front to the west and that will approach the state tonight and we'll start to see a few showers overnight and a few more showers as we head through the our wednesday. we'll breeze through today on the future forecast. just partly to at times mostly cloudy at sunset and more clouds overnight. and i don't think the showers start to close to midnight and it will be above freeze sog no slept of any wintry weather. and the scattered showers will hang around and a few of you could see showers for your morning commute and through the day as well.
