suspending all sorority activities until further notice. students say they're disappointed but not surprised this could happen. >> this could happen to anyone. not just someone in a sorority. i know people think drinking culture is propelled by greek life. >> it's scary. as a sorority member i get nervous for anyone in those positions. >> the student affairs staff is meeting with all ten chapter presidents and the executive board to review duke's expectations. each chapter will be asked to review activities to insurance compliance with policy policies on social events, rush, and alcohol use. the event was scheduled for 5:00 this evening but closed to the press. >> we know this was an alcohol- related incident. do we know what led up to the student being hospitalized? >> reporter: well, sharon, the

tight lipped about this. they wouldn't give us any information about the specifics of the case. they wouldn't identify the student or the sorority involved. amy cutler live from duke. thank you. authorities are calling it one of the biggest animal rescue operations in history. today the aspca took nearly 600 animals from a shelter in hoke county. wncn's nate rogers is live in re ford with the latest. -- raeford with the latest. >> reporter: that is rights began investigating after numerous reports of sick animals being adopted by the shelter. the sheriff's office executed a search warrant. once on the property, they say the conditions were deplorable. >> people tried to tell the state many times. but today, there's action more than 600 animals found in need of medical care.

others with severe respiratory disease. >> some of that is living environments. some of the buildings here are just really insufficient, very unsanitary environments for the animals. property owners steven and linda face multiple counts of an mall cruelty. take a look at these pictures. according to the group, you can see dogs and cats housed in filthy kennels and cages. this shows a dog with a broken leg and this malnourished horse. the haven has been in operation for the last 20 years. over the last 10 years the property owners have operated without a license. the animal shelter was also deemed inadequate by the department of agriculture during past inspections and received several complaints throughout the years. >> what took authorities so long to intervene. >> well, what they would do is these complaints would go through the state. the state would then do their investigation.

cruelty or neglect, that's whenever we drafted a search warrant and went out to the property. sneak nearly 140 responders will assess the property over the next two to three days. tomorrow they'll begin removing all the animals. >> are you glad the animals are getting care? >> i'm glad i don't have to hear the whining and the crying. >> reporter: to show somewhat of an active scene, authorities wrapping up now. we're told they'll be back in the morning. the bond is currently set at $4,000. authorities anticipate more charges from this incident. that's the latest in hoke county, nate rogers, wncn news now. happening in garner, police are on the scene of a deadly crash involving a pedestrian. it happened before 5:00 on the u.s. 70 eastbound ramp from i- 40. drivers say -- or officers say drivers should use jones sausage road as an alternate route for the time being.

the second deadly crash in garner today. 18-year-old christopher sanchez was killed after he lost control of the truck he was driving and struck a tree. the crash happened around 7:00 on simkins road. sanchez was speeding and not wearing a seat belt. right now durham police are working through a backlog of more than a dozen unsolved murders from 2015. >> tonight the family of one of the victims is talking only to wncn about their loss. last march someone shot and killed former basketball store johnny mcclain. and so far there haven't been in arrests in the case. mario boone joins us live where near mcclain was killed. are detectives closer to an arrest? >> well, they will not say that specifically for obvious reasons. they don't want to tip off the suspects out there. but they tell me this case like many others are on their radar and they want to know who kimed that 22-year-old just up the

in 2015, durham nearly doubled its homicide count from the year before with 42. and wncn learned 13 murders remain unsolved. former hillside high basketball score johnny mcclain is one of those unsolved killings. >> i just kept saying not johnny. johnny? i couldn't believe it was johnny. >> his family still racked with grief agreed to speak with me if i didn't show their faces out of fear the killer might target them next. >> i'd like to see him get caught, you know, and punished. >> mcclain was 22 when he was shot to death last march near this intersection. while he was driving down holloway street, his two passengers were also shot but survived. >> we want to solve all our homicides. >> i wanted to speak with dpd's interim chief about killers roaming our streets. homicide lieutenant sheldon perkins talked instead and he

why some cases go unsolved. lack of witness cooperation and lack of physical evidence. but that doesn't mean they quit digging. >> we never have a homicide case that goes inactive. >> i pressed dpd about whether eight homicide investigators is enough? >> we're like everybody else, we could always use more resources. >> reporter: durham police told me today they have their best detectives working on these unsolved homicides. and of course they need your help as well. they want you to call crime stoppers if you have any information on any of these open cases. of course, you can remain anonymous and you can also get a reward. we're live in east durham, mario boone, wncn news now. happening now, people are gathering outside a wake county detention center to protest recent immigration raids they're holding a vigil to call attention to the raids they say are tearing families apart. earlier this month, immigration and customs enforcement agents arrested more than 100 people primarily in north carolina,

find an alternative site. state lawmakers are looking at a proposal that would change who is in charge of the state's low performing schools. bo minnick has more on the debates. >> the focus is, you know, improving under performing schools. >> and lawmakers are considering what is the best way to do that in north carolina. a plan is on the table that would take five of the states lowest performing elementary schools and group them into one district, what's called an achievement district. the state would select a charter school operator to come in and try to turn the school around. >> we have to think about what we can do right now. at some point, it really does ring hollow to say these things take time. we need to focus on what's best for the kids. i dent know that that's necessarily this bill. >> if approved, the plan would be a pilot program in north carolina starting in the 2017- 2018 school year. a school selected would so be in the lowest 5% of all schools. the school would also have to

recent growth expectations if approved, it would enter into a five-year contract with the achievement school district. >> we're talking about just five schools to start. and we're trying to make sure our selection process for those schools is one that will work. >> some lawmakers question whether the state should foe focus on efforts all ready under way. >> that's why i said in here, perhaps the right answer is let's do more of what we're doing so we get more kids more quickly. >> we also asked some parents their take. >> i would prefer they work on improving the scores of all the schools as they are. >> lawmakers are planning to hold two more meetings on this topic. one in february. one in march. they're looking to hear from the public and also from states that have this type of school district. in raleigh, bo minnick, wncn news now. the other states that have achievement school districts include louisiana, michigan, and tennessee, we spoke with the state school board association, they have not taken a stance on a proposal but say they have concerns

parking lot. i'm joined with wes hohenstein. this weather all over the country is wild. >> remember our snow we had. >> i remember it. >> remember that started as severe rainstorms down in the gulf coast. and then all that energy came up here and turned it into snow. florida's getting rain right now. why do we care about that? because that moisture will work its way up the coast and be here tomorrow. and it is a rain event. nothing more. today was a cloud event with a little bit of sun. we had a few drops of rain here and there. but the rain chances for tomorrow now continue to go up as our temperatures continue to go down. so we've got upper 30s. we've got upper 40s down in the sand hims. so we're really all over the place. but everyone is colder now than where we were yesterday. it's 9 degrees colder down in johnston county than last night at 7:00. 16 degrees colder in louisburg. 23 degrees colder in roanoke

the cold front this morning worked. temperatures continue to drop into the over night hours. depending on where you are, we'll fall through the low 40s hour by hour. the clouds are sticking around. we have small chances. maybe a speck or two of rain on your windshield. nothing more. including for tomorrow morning's commute. 20% chance of rain. we'll have an eye on the radar tomorrow at 4:30. temperatures at 34. this morning it was mid 40s. it'll be 10 degrees colder than that tomorrow. make sure you're ready for that. have the umbrella ready. there's the cold front now. the stationery front, that low will ride right up that stationery front, it's going to bring rain with it. that's what we'll have to deal with tomorrow. this weekend we'll have to deal with high pressure. and it'll bring us sunshine and warmer temperatures. but none of that tomorrow. we've got clouds to start off. then again maybe a few blips showing up on the radar early on. but by mid-morning, 9:00 a.m. notice a lot more water starting to move into the area. by noon, scattered showers. not heavy rain.

but cold rain. and that's never fun. as we go through the afternoon, we'll keep some scattered showers around, including for the ride home from school. and including for the ride home from work. but notice the farther south and east you go the wetter it gets. the farther north and west the dryer. that's the trend. there's the area of low pressure. that's the source of a lot of rain. it continues to move up the coast. by late thursday night, everything starts to dry out and clear out and there is our sunshine that will be here friday and beyond. but not tomorrow. tomorrow it is a chilly day. temperatures in the 40s. cloudy skies. again rain mainly late morning through the afternoon. and as we kind of pinpoint when exactly it's going to fall, i think a lot of us will get out the door with a dry morning commute, and not so much as we get into the afternoon. notice that's when the higher rain chances are. so a chilly, cloudy, and wet day tomorrow. but i won't use those words this weekend. we're up to 51 on friday. 55 on saturday. watch out though. friday and saturday morning while the days will get warmer,
