i am not entirely surprised. >> right now, promise of change tonight at duke university after a scary incident at a sorority event. good evening, i am sean maroney. >> and i am sharon tazewell. university leaders met with the sorority's tonight to lift a ban on activities just hours after him lamenting up. wncn's amy cutler is live in durham to explain. >>reporter:it now means that sororities can hold events like chapter meetings, or study breaks. this as we learned the student rush to the hospital is going to be okay. duke university abruptly suspended all sorority

it happened after they say, a female student, a new member of a sorority was rushed to the hospital. she had had too much to drink. >> it happens all over the place. it's really scary. i mean,, i don't know, as a sorority member myself i get nervous for the new members or anyone that is ever in those positions. >>reporter: the university told -- telling us it happened as part of a rush event on tuesday night. the student listed in critical condition. it prompted duke to hold an emergency meeting this evening. the chapter presidents of the sororities, and the executive board coming together with university officials. it was closed to the media. >> i am not entirely surprised. >>reporter:devon buckley is a graduate student at duke. she tells me some sorority girls live below her, and she has seen what can happen when alcohol is involved >> there was a girl collapsed there, and she was dressed only in a broad and underpants, lying on her face with her arms back like this.

meeting, duke issued a statement saying all agree that what happened last night was unacceptable, and that steps must be taken to prevent any similar reoccurrence. the women committed to focusing on blasting reforms, as of this time, the suspension of activities has been partially lifted. duke says it expects to fully left that suspension, in the near future. we reached out to duke for an interview, they declined. i should also mention that they have been tight lipped about this case. they have not identified the student, or the sorority at the center of it. live in duke, amy cutler, wncn news now can alert an eye for drivers along i40 in wake county, the road is back open after deadly crash. here is a lifelike right now on i 40 and 70 in garner. the accident happened before 4:30. payson jones was driving onto the exit ramp from 40 east up to 70 when he ran off the road and hit james lucas. lucas on the side of the road was killed. police on the highway patrol are investigating.

filed. the aspca is working its largest animal rescue in history. the massive raytek place at a haven animal rescue shall that shelter. more than 600 animals were found living in deplorable conditions. the owner, stephen and linda spear were charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. some animals were found with open once. the shelter was operating without a license and for the last 10 years. >> what's of authority so long to intervene? >> what they would do, as these complaints would go through the state. the state would then do their investigations. when it came to the animal cruelty -- or neglect, that is whenever we drafted a search warrant went out to the property. >> nearly 140 aspca responders will access a 122-acre property over the next two-three days. thursday, they will begin removing all of the animals dozens of people in fear of

veterinarians are working to figure out what killed a baby humpback whale that washed ashore in curry beach. someone discovered the young well early this morning. the whale was one-two years old and weighed 15,000 pounds. he also said the whale was very thin and appeared to be sick for quite some time. crews will perform a necropsy. the future of a csx transportation hub project in trust the county is up in the air. we told you last night governor mccrory released a statement saying the current proposed site was no longer a viable option. it is not a guarantee the land owner says the open statements will allow him to keep his for 50 acres of land for homes, farms and businesses. >> people that voice their support on day one, i just assumed that this big project that the land had been acquired and every thing had been done >> it is committed to seeing this project through, looks forward to addressing any concerns. it is unclear where, or if the project will move forward at

lawmakers are debating weather someone should step in to help run some of the states low performing schools. the house committee met today to discuss the possibility of achievement school districts. the plan would take five of the states lowest performing elementary schools and group them into one district. the state would select charter school operators to come in and run the schools. >> we are trying to do our own system, our own district where we have an ability to make it fit for north carolina. >> i would prefer they just work on improving the scores of all of the schools, as they are. >> some lawmakers say they think it may be a better idea for the state to focus on efforts already underway to help improve low performing schools. the committee will meet again in february as well as march the future of our du airport being laid out for the public tonight. the airport authority held its first workshop on the vision 2040 master plans tonight in durham. it includes ways to attack all growth including future aircraft . the next step is to develop

truck. other cars joined the 10-mile chase before the driver rams into another car, got out and started shooting. the suspect is in icu. the interstate was about four hours. the city of ferguson, missouri and the justice department are prepared to overhaul that cities police department. it comes following a proposal between the city and doj. the proposal requires more thorough training of police officers. as well as reforming use of force procedures. it also requires all officers, supervisors, and jail workers to wear body cameras and microphones. this move comes more than one year effort -- after officer shot and killed michael brown. that shooting sparked protest nationwide. no shortage of drama in the race for the white house. donald trump is taking himself out of tomorrow's gop debate. it's a last one before the iowa caucuses next week. trump still beats there and says he does not need the debate to bolster his support. his issue is with fox moderator megyn kelly whose he says it was unfair to him at the first debate.

a military veteran is using his disability to help his neighbors during snowstorms. justin anderson was wounded while serving in the iraq war. he uses a wheelchair to get around. last year he took his wheelchair off road attaching a snow blade to it. he goes to neighbors plowing driveways, sidewalks and anything flat. >> the community has supported me immensely through my struggles, and my tough times with having my leg amputated. also, with my fight with brain cancer. so, this is my way of giving back. >> anderson says he is planning more modifications to the snowplow for the future. a frightening fall for a skier in alaska. look at this. angel collinson was filming for a movie when she hit an icy patch falling more than 1000 feet down a mountain. amazing she only suffered two jammed fingers and some bruises. collinson was wearing a microphone and could be heard saying i am okay. i am okay. that is wild. a thousand feet? >> that is why i stay on the

[laughter] keep it safe, right? no snow in our forecast? >> if you think about it, the month is almost over, the last day of this month and sunday we are going to be in the 60s. we have made it through our average snowiest month with just the one event we had last week. the second snowiest month is february. it's not completely over yet. what i am about to talk about is rain and nothing else tonight. we have clouds, you see a few specks of green on the radar there will be more than a few specs tomorrow, especially in the afternoon. outside right now, it is chilly, we got spoiled for a little bit. we are temperatures this morning in the 40s when you left for work and school. not as warm tomorrow. many of us in the 30s mainly north of the triangle in the 40s you see here will slowly slide into the 30s by tomorrow morning. a heck of a temperature change contrast. we have been back-and-forth the

now, i guess we are back, as in 14 degrees colder right now in franklin county that it was last night at this time. it will be colder tomorrow morning. here we go hour by hour through your thursday forecast. another day without any s unshine. dryer in the morning with more of the rain coming in the afternoon. we will start at 34, jump up to 37 at 9 a.m. you will make coats, but not umbrellas for the morning commute. i lunch lunchtime 42 scattered showers, i think the right home from school and from work will have scattered showers as temperatures struggle to get into the 40s. not a lot of sunshine tomorrow, i got something for you here, the question is and you cannot cheat is this a super sunset or sunrise? i had to ask. although, i will say the little bit of fog at the bottom gave me a big hits. this is a super sunrise. jessica down the camera took this for us. this is from several weeks ago but an amazing shot with those wonderful pine trees.
