be back here in the morning to collect the remaining animals. it's a scene that one animal shelter volunteer said she imagined. she claims the shelter is good to animals and is responsible for hundreds of adoptions. >> we have never seen any cruelty in those animals. >> reporter: martez norris has been volunteering at the haven animal shelter for two years. >> it was an absolute shock. >> reporter: she couldn't believe what she saw when she night. >> to me it's a shelter that has dogs and they are caring for the animals. >> reporter: investigators served a search warrant wednesday morning after complaints from neighbors and other agencies. they say they found over 600 animals, many of them showing signs of neglect and in need of medical care. they also found at least 15 dead dogs buried at the shelter. >> i am not sure why it's not been shut down. it's unfortunate it wasn't shut down earlier. the conditions we're seeing

>> reporter: the property owner steven and lynden spear face multiple counts of animal cruelty. lots of animals showed up and the owners took them in because they did not want to abandon them or accepted -- send them to a shelter that would euthanize them. >> it's injustice. they have put their heart and soul into that place. >> reporter: the focus now shifts to giving the animals treatment so they can be adopted down the road. >> they came here with the promise of being adopted into a loving home and we intend to fulfill that. >> reporter: the animals will be taken to another shelter where a team of vets will give them a thorough medical exam nation and begin treatment. meanwhile, the owners have been released from jail on $5,000 bonds. >> a lot of our viewers are asking about adoption. what is the aspca saying about that? >> reporter: they say these animals will be available for adoption at some point, but they still need to go through the

their treatment before they will be available. that's a process that's expected to take several weeks. back to you. >> thank you. reporting live for us in rayford. thanks. david. zebulon bank manager is being hailed a hero after foiling a robbery attempt that happened at the pnc branch on arendell avenue. watch this surveillance video. the bank manager saw the armed suspect and held the door shut so he couldn't enter. the suspect began to hit the door with the gun but the manager wouldn't budge. the man ran towards the nearby rite aid. here is a better look at the suspect. investigators believe he may be driving a small dark grey vehicle with black rims. call police if you have any information. the highway patrol has identify add car involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash am troopers are looking for a mid 1990s gmc or pickup truck with front end damage. back on january 16 authorities

and critically injured a third on u.s. 421. and tonight we are also learning more about the investigation into a sorority at the duke university. it came after a student went to the hospital after drinking too much alcohol. mario boon is in durhamum with the latest. >> reporter: here is is a copy of the police report about this incident. we got it earlier today. it doesn't tell us new information. we learned this incident happened on east campus behind me at the randolph hall over in the distance there. leaders at duke university remain mum about a sorority party that 19-year-old pledge into -- to the er department. they went down inside a dorm room. wncn was first to obtain a copy of the campus police report

drinking. after no comments from duke i tried to get answers from students on sorority row. are you guys concerned about >> of course, yeah. >> reporter: could you talk to >> no. >> reporter: shortly after that exchange, a duke spokesman told us to leave campus. >> there is a lot of steps to be taken to make sure what it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: while the circumstances surrounding this latest incident are unclear, we did reach out to anti-hazing advocates robert and pam champion who lost their son in a hazing ritual involving the fam u marching band. >> what that tells me is that the university is not taking it seriously. >> it's a sense of urgency. >> reporter: besides this being consuming alcohol underage, police say they do not expect to filarial charges. i am told the victim in this case is expected to make a full

we have got you covered from the campus of duke university tonight. mario boone, "wncn news now." the dss building in johnston county is bedbug free after being forced to shut down earlier today. it came after someone found one of the bugs in the lobby. a sign was posted on the door explaining the closure. the problem stunned many who came to the building today. >> i am very shocked for it to be a social service building because i was thinking that they was sanitized more often or something in there. >> i think that's disgusting. it's supposed to be child services. there ain't supposed to be stuff like that in there. >> pest control cleared everything out. after determining there was no active infestation, the building will reopen tomorrow morning. the governor is committed to bringing a massive csx shipping facility to north carolina, but it's up to the railroad when it comes to where it should be located. on wednesday the governor said the original proposed site in selma was no longer a viable option.

fierce opposition from landowners and local officials. and today the lieutenant governor says csx needs to find a new spot for the facility. >> i think it's a great project. probably most people in north carolina think it's a great project the way they go about acquiring that land and certainly the next step now. >> when we asked them, they said they are working with stakeholders to move the project forward. a noticeably cooler day across north carolina with temperatures in the 40s. tonight rain is creeping in the forecast. the latest on that. >> we had a little bit of rain, especially south of the triangle today. right now it's 43 degrees outside and as we take a look at what's going on, 43 in ralleigh, but 40 in durham, 36 in roxboro. no rain tonight. but that rain is down to the southeast and it is moving up towards the northeast. so a little bit of rain up by roanoke rapids and halifax county. that seems to be the most

by halifax it's pretty light. as we look at the big picture, you can see that that rain is moving off to the east. there is low pressure situated right off the coast of jacksonville. sea and clear everything out for us. a quick look at the forecast for this evening i will go with a one in three shot of some rain southeast of the triangle and then everything ending by midnight. 9:00 a 30% chance. most of the rain to the east. and then as we head towards the overnight hours skies will clear. temperatures will drop. it will be a kind of a cold start to tomorrow. wait until you see the sunshine i have planned for your weekend. we will have that coming up in a few minutes. sean and sharon. >> all right. looking forward to it. thank you. tonight renewed calls for teacher pay. >> superintendents took that message to state lawmakers. what they had to say. >> i have been in this business 44 years and this is the

>> reporter: tough to get and keep good teachers. state school superintendents told lawmakers that has to change. >> we're filling vacancies all year long. i have vacancies now. i think i have lost 30 people since the beginning of the year out of teaching positions in the turmoil that creates in the classrooms is rough. >> reporter: eight superintendents spoke to a house committee in ralleigh. it's the same committee that june atkinson addressed telling them teachers should get a 10% pay raise. >> i believe that a 10% raise for our teachers would go a long way in our minimizing the revolving door. >> i would love do it, but we have got to be realistic in light of available resources. >> reporter: the department of public instruction provided us some numbers showing how the teacher turnover rate has increased in all but one of the last five years. it now stands at 14.8%. >> we certainly want to reward

>> reporter: tim moore stopped by the committee meeting. the base salary for starting teachers in north carolina is $35,000 a year. we asked the speaker about atkinson's request for a 10% teacher raise. >> with all due respect, i don't think that's a realistic number. certainly we would like to do that, right? but we can't afford that. >> reporter: atkinson says more money is necessary to help improve that turnover rate. >> now, i want our teachers to get a 10% raise. i understand the general assembly has a very huge challenge in balancing the budget. >> reporter: the committee will meet again in february and march, and ultimately it will report its findings once the general assembly reconvenes in april. beau minnick, "wncn news now." officials told us a 10% raise for teachers in north carolina would cost about $540 million. you can expect to see a big construction boom on ralleigh's

they are starting phase two of the renewal project focusing on making the sidewalks safer. it includes raised medians, marked bike lanes and three roundabouts. the project manager says they will try to avoid disrupting travel patterns and businesses in the area. >> the main thing is to make sure that people know these businesses are still there. they are still in business. and the idea is that we can maintain while we are going through this that afterwards they should thrive. >> they hope to begin construction in march and have it completed by the summer of 2017. community members are working to solve durham's crime members. >> discussing what they say needs to be done. 30 years since the space shuttle challenger disaster. we will take a look at some of the touching tributes, including one from space. first here is a live look at 40 and harrison avenue for this thursday night commute. no problems to report right

today marks 30 years since a the space shuttle challenger disaster. >> memorials across the country and even in space it to honor the seven astronauts who lost their lives that day. >> ronald e. mcnair. gregory b. jarvis. >> the challenger 7 will be remembered today at cape canaveral, florida. the site of the 1986 disaster. it burst into flames 70 seconds after take-off. to break apart, causing the explosion. there was a tribute from the international space station. >> a moment of silence and recognize the sacrifice of all those crew members and how their spirit and their legacy lives on in their achievement in space. >> two of the astronauts on board had ties to north carolina.

the real estate mogul backed out of the debate claiming he was treated unfairly by moderator megyn kelly. iowa republicans had mixed reactions to the decision. >> he is his own person. i like that because he's -- i mean, he isn't even spending money on his campaign. >> you are going to caucus for him monday night whether he debates or not? >> you bet. >> goes along with everything else we have seen. he is just not that interested in the people as much as i'd like him to be. >> the latest nbc news "wall street journal" poll shows trump has widened his lead to seven points over ted cruz in iowa. more and more veterans are home. state officials say north carolina now has the eighth largest veteran population at 775,000. the state also has added eight more veteran service location. today's announcement preceded

veterans service members and their families. >> the veteran population and the impact on north carolina is growing because of the hard work of our governor and our folks all across the state services veterans. >> wake county's veteran population has increased by more than 59,000 since september of 2014. meanwhile, hundreds of veterans got a chance to meet with potential employers. the job fair took place at carter finley stadium. companies such as home depot, time warner and city of ralleigh were on hand to meet with veterans. organizers estimate about 150 people who attended today will be offered a job. now your weather forecast. >> good evening. i am bill reh in for wes. look at this. we have got the city of ralleigh looking bright. looking nice. but it is a little chilly outside as we take a look at those temperatures. it's 43. it's not raining right now. no real official rain registered from the triangle north today. it's been to the south and southeast. down in fayetteville you have a little bit of light rain.

might be a little more along the i-95 corridor. 43 rocky mount, wilson. 38 south hill. roxboro 36-degree. i have a one in three shot through nine or ten tonight for rain. fayetteville light sprinkles. wilson and goldsboro and halifax and northampton counties, that's about it. you can see a little bit of rain that came through today. low pressure off the coast of florida. while that low is moving to the east out to sea, so it's going to take everything with it, and then drier air is going to come in from the northwest. so it's going to stay cool tomorrow with that flow out of the northwest. it will be a little breezy at times. as we look at the hourly forecast, a little bit of light rain. otherwise cloudy skies at 9:00. 41 degrees. slight risk at midnight. 39 far eastern viewing area. the skies will clear out overnight and by tomorrow morning we will be in the mid-to-low 30s for a low. i have a low of 34 in the triangle with clear skies.

in general, mainly sunny tomorrow. a couple of harmless clouds in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. it will be a little breezy. so i have added the wind chills in the afternoon. you can see upper 40s will feel like the lower 40s. the high 49 in ralleigh. 48 in durham. nice 53 degrees in fayetteville. so there goes that low out to sea taking all the rain with it. so we have got sunshine in here. a little trough of low pressure. harmless. all it's gonna do is act as a wind shift to the northwest tomorrow afternoon and you will feel the breezes 10 to 15. saturday morning the coldest morning. no wind. it will be calm. the rotation around the high is clockwise. we will pick up a southerly flow bringing in some mild temperatures. these fronts up to the north are hung up and they are going to stay there. so we are going to be beautiful across your last two days of january. february starts on monday. can you believe it? hey, forecast for tomorrow after the chilly night we clear out overnight.
