nbc sports report. right the now on wncn, a two week search for a murder suspect is over. the clues that led to the arrest. plus helping hand the nationwide effort for the community stripped of its water supply. how locals are helping the crisis in flint. could it be the panthers' oldest and most loyal fan? we introduce you to the dabbing gran ny as she pushes for the panthers to keep pounding. good evening i'm maggie newland, we start with an update to a durham shoot out that left a man dead two weeks ago. today police announced an arrest in the case and they're crediting deputies in neighboring wake county. two men, jesus and lewis shot and killed jose rodriguez two weeks ago. this was the scene on north

16th. police say they shot the 25- year-old and left the scene with 25-year-old elizabeth espana. she's charged with accessory after the fact. earlier this week, deputies pulled over the group in wake county saying they were connected to a separate home break-in. that's when they linked them to the murder case. they're being held in jail without bond. an update to a story we first brought you as breaking news on wncn today. officials say the man who died in an early morning house fire in smithfield was deaf. crew rest responded to the home on fifth street before 5:00 a.m. the homing is located beside the smithfield police department. no word on what caused the fire. right now family friends and community leaders are in durham calling for action from immigration officials. they're concerned about fourteens they say are being held for possible deportation.

where the rally will get under way shortly. >> reporter: that vigil will get started at 7:00. we're outside grace baptist church in durham. those who are going to be here say they're calling on ice to stop the deportation of the four teens. one of those teens is from durham from river side high school. his name is wildon acosta. two teens are from charlotte. one is from greenville. the families will be here and they will speak about how this whole situation has impacted them. >> we have a lot of friends. they don't want to send their kids to this school. because who knows what will happen. who knows if they'll come back from school or their parents. i don't think that's right for a family or a person. [ foreign language ].

heard from there is named delcia acosta. she spoke with us there talking about how she's afraid that her son is going to be deported. those close to the families tell us that all of the teens are here in the united states to flee from gang violence. and there's fear that they would be deported and if they went back to their native countries they could be harmed that vigil gets under way here at 7:00. we'll be here and provide coverage on air and online. bo minnick, wncn news now. we're following breaking news in north raleigh. several units are on the scene. off durant road near 540. this video is just coming into the news room. you can see firefighters on the scene there at the house. our crew on scene says there does not appear to be much outside damage or serious injuries but you can see a very extensive fire fighting effort.

information on this fire as we learn it. in fayetteville, police are looking for the person responsible for shooting three people at a party. it happened at a home on ramsey street before 4:00 this morning. police were on scene for several hours looking for clues. all three victims went to the hospital. they're expected to recover. anyone with information is asked to call police. the search for the two remaining escaped inmates in california is over. a tip led investigators to both men in san francisco. a woman saw a van that looked like the one deputies say two men stole. a third inmate who escaped surrendered yesterday. one person is dead after a shooting at a motorcycle expo in colorado. several others were injured. so far no arrests have been made. turning to politics now. candidates are doing everything they can to win last minute votes in iowa ahead of monday's caucus.

talked with the man who won the caucus in 2012. >> you may not recognize the man with the gun. but in 2012, he won the iowa caucus. >> i have a handgun and a long gun. >> former pennsylvania senator rick santorum beat mitt romney. a pole showed his support in the caucus this year at zero. he does not blame his opponents. he took aim at the media, specifically fox news. >> they don't want to talk real issues the main terrorist organization in the world targeting a candidate calling them an enemy. that tells you exactly the state of the news coverage we're getting in this race. >> last spring the terrorist group isis including santorum on an enemy's list.

here's bill ray with a first look at the forecast. >> the cars are driving awfully fast. here's the current picture. there's the city of raleigh. patrick was getting from the south. we're looking from the north toward the south. you can see the beautiful colors in the sky. 51 degrees right now. that's not too bad. the normal high this time of year is 52. so definitely a milder day today. we're in the 40s in south hill virginia and roanoke. 51 raleigh. 54 fayetteville. 50 in wilson. a check of the big picture, high pressure just sitting right over us. it's going to continue to just back into the ocean a little bit. move away. and the flow around that high will continue and be more southwesterly tomorrow. it will even see warmer temperatures than we saw today when everybody was in the 50s. so if you're heading out on this saturday evening, how about 48 at 7:00. skies remain mainly clear, 46 at 8:00. and 43 to low 40s. a slow fall until midnight. and over night tonight, it's

was this morning. this morning's low was 26. so it'll be a good 10 degrees or so warmer than that tomorrow morning. it's 37 or so. it should stay above freezing. along the virginia border, in the mid 30s. tomorrow will be warm. very mild temperatures for a while. we have chili air on the seven- day too. a michigan town continues to be under a public health emergency after its water became tainted a group in raleigh is doing what it can to deliver clean water to the midwest. >> they need water now. >> reporter: a dangerous, potentially deadly situation. the water in flint michigan is tainted following a 2014 switch in the city's water source. the water for more than two dozen city locations have can handle. michigan governor rick snider is under fire for his administration's role.

well, i mean, it's true. so again, that doesn't help solve the problem. >> reporter: while outrage is building in flint, here in north carolina, something positive is happening. >> we take water for granted and we use it so much for drinking or bathing or cooking. >> reporter: deon of southeast raleigh knew she and her community could help. >> something small that we could do. we understand this isn't a permanent long-term solution. but they need water now. >> reporter: they've collected more than 15,000 bottles of clean water in a week. >> to make sure flint michigan knows their on our minds and we care for them and they're not alone in this. >> reporter: the delivery truck is headed to greensboro where it will pick up 300 more cases of water. the water is expected to arrive and be delivered to flint on monday. february is black history month. as many as 10,000 people attended the 15th annual african american cultural

and welcome back. keeping everyone safe during the super bowl is the biggest priority for officials in the bay area. we're walked through the command center put in place for federal agents and their law enforcement partners. cell phones and computers have lined the tables where members of the emergency operation center will be stationed throughout the super bowl week. representatives from local, state, and federal agencies will be working together to respond to every imaginable emergency in san francisco, from terrorism to water main breaks. specially trained officials will be at the ready to respond.

the california national guard. we'll also have the states office of emergency services here. and from the federal government, we'll have fema and some representatives from the department of defense. >> there are regular telephone, satellite telephones, and other forms of back-up communication available for police and for fire officials to coordinate their resources in the event of that type of emergency. but there could also be a power outage or some other type of emergency, reps from pg and e and other utilities like wireless carriers will also be there on hand. >> if something's come up and there's a crowd control issue, the police department that's here in the room would be able to talk to the public safety officers and they would be able to get them to the right location. if something else came up not related to super bowl city, but there was a large fire somewhere in the city, other resources could be redirected from here. >> well one of the oldest living panthers' fans is ready

this is mary ward. she's 95 years old and lives in lincoln county. she started watching the panthers more than 20 years ago when her great grandson asked her to watch a game with him. she instantly fell in love with the team and the pose made famous by cam newton. >> i love them all. but cam is the one that i cater to. cam and that davis. he's a good player. and he's a good sportsman. what i like about all of tell, they all play like a sports supposed to be played. >> she knows a lot about football there. mary says she's never missed a game unless she had to work. she plans to watch the super bowl with her family and wear her lucky jersey. our coverage of the panthers and super bowl 50 continues online. we a special section of wncn.com where you can find other features from across the state. scroll over the sports tab and down to the panthers section.

54 in goldsboro. smithfield 50. 52 in durham. the temperature trend over night, you see the blues take over. we'll get into the 30s over night. so i'm not going to forecast any freezing temperatures. but we'll drop down there. i have a low in the triangle around 37. you can see hourly here. we'll skip every three hours, 9:00, 43 degrees. 41 at 3:00 a.m. down to 38 at 6:00 a.m. we'll drop to around 37 degrees. 11 degrees warmer than it was this morning by tomorrow morning. 47 at 9:00. 61 at noon tomorrow. we're going to be well into the 60s. i have a high tomorrow of 66 degrees. it should occur around 3:00. when's the next weather maker? you can count the nice weather. but we're talking something that might disrupt you a little bit. that would be wednesday. maybe tuesday night there could be showers. but definitely into wednesday, it'll be mild ahead of this cold front coming through. the next weather maker is a cold front on wednesday, showers are likely.

instability, you might hear a rumble of thunder. a slight risk. but it exists. the high pressure system backs off. it moves away. we get the flow out of the southwest tomorrow. and we're sunny. a few late day clouds. partly cloudy tomorrow night. most of the day tomorrow will be sunny. and monday will be partly sunny. this little front here, little bits of precipitation along it. but they'll get squeezed out over the mountains. on tuesday now, this front will play over north carolina, so we get to the south, and it's chillier. if that front goes back to the north, it's a little warmer. i'm going to bring it into the low 60s after the upper 60s on monday. as we look at the forecast for tomorrow, after lows in the 30s over night. sanford and pinehurst in the sand hills will see a high of 67. fayetteville 69.

benson, goldsboro, and wilson, 68. smithfield, rocky mount, roanoke rapids, 67. in the triangle, 66. clayton 67. sighler city 66. 65 in henderson. 66 in roxboro. and 66 in south hill virginia. lewisburg, you'll see 66 too. let's look at that forecast starting with tomorrow again. there's your low of 37 degrees. lots of sunshine. now there will be a few clouds late in the day. and that's when you can be putting away the bucket. it's time to wash that car. let's not see dirty cars around tomorrow. you have a great weekend to get the salt off your car from last weekend. clear and chilly though. bright and dry at noon, 61. 62 degrees at 5:00 after the high of 66. monday, back to work or school, look at the low, 47. so not really a chill at the bus stop. 68 degrees.

originally it looked a little sunnier. now it's getting cloudier as we get close to it. possible shadows. mostly cloudy. mostly cloudy means a little sun can come out. it depends on what sir walter raleigh sees at noon. i think he might see a shadow. you know the old wives tale if he doesn't see a shadow, that's an early spring. as we look at the rest of the forecast, wednesday is the day to get wet. as a matter of fact, on wednesday, the low will be just 54. showers will be likely on the way to work or school. cold front comes through late in the day with showers. and then on thursday, 52 degrees. some early morning clouds, 52 degrees. definitely a chillier day. but dryer throughout the day in the 40s. and chillier weather friday and saturday. we'll be in the mid 40s. and over night lows, down to a little bit below freezing. 56 was the high today.

i kids and kids at heart came to chapel hill today to unleash their inner builders. check out this lion made out of more than 10,000 lego pieces. it's one of the custom creations by members of the north carolina lego users group. about 20 of them are coming together for lego palooza. it's the twelfth year for the event that's free to the public and provides inspiration for many. >> i think it's like really cool to see what everyone builds and it gives me inspiration, like i said to go back to my home and start creating all these new and different things. because there's so much stuff you can do with legos. >> there are hands-on activities for kids too.
