how it will be paid for. the campus of nc state university, emma. >> reporter: the meetings will happen every few months. today they're talking money, how they'll renovation. as the triangle continues to be a hot spot to live and work, wake county schools are feeling the population boom. the number of students is growing and growing but where to put them. new school construction can't happen fast enough. >> the frustration for all of us i think is we've got two increasing curbs. one is student growth and the other is construction and we can't close that gap. >> reporter: that was wake county superintendent jim meryl. wncn spoke with him at a similar meeting between the board of education. 365 days have passed but the problems largely remain the same. >> obviously i would prefer to not pay for other people's kids to go to school, but it's a very important reason for like money

>> reporter: in 2013, voters passed an $810 million bond that allowed for the construction of 16 new schools. but some parents are upset it may mean their kids will have to switch schools. >> the commute would be closer to 20 minutes have over an hour on the bus on the way home. >> i can't do this anymore. >> reporter: wake county schools will work with the board of commissioners on a plan for the future. today's meeting starts 5:30 at the mckennon center on the campus of nc state. em-- wright, wncn news. >> the head of the schools address money concerns. senator pro tem fill burger is concerned some money the -- phil burger is concerned some of the money is being used to fund dpi. funding was cut in this year's budget. >> the general assembly required the department of public instruction to cut $2.5 million

and we are doing that and we will provide the necessary documentation as to the positions that we are cutting. >> they say the money is used as it was required by the budget. and officials met with training on id checks. chapel hill has been in the spotlight after the state fined and suspended alcohol licenses at two bars there, accused of serving an underaged man when he got behind the wheel, killing three people including a child. yesterday's training was free and designed to help spot fake id's, as well as patrons who have had way too much to drink. it's been nearly three months and still no decision's been made on whether or not a harnett county deputy will be charged in the death of john livingston. yesterday, livingston's supporters rallied outside of the harnett county courthouse

the 33-year-old was shot and killed by deputy kahagas. livingston was unarmed. harnett county vernon stuart is awaiting on information to determine if he'll be charged. >> reporter: what you have learned?. >> they refer me to the sbi. the only thing they've done is my client got an emt bill and hospital -- and a burial bill. >> court documents show that livingston grabbed the deputy's taser and tried to stun him after the two began some type of altercation on livingston's porch. the sbi continues their investigation into the incident and will submit their report to stuart in the coming weeks. right now, the investigation continues into what caused a fire at a raleigh home, causing

no one was home at the time of the fire. crews say the house did have smoke damage. off the coast of hawaii, plain had some real trouble in mid-flight, led to emergency water landing. the whole thing was caught on camera. the pilot was experience something mechanical problems and had to ditch that in a nearby lagoon. emergency officials were able to pull the pilot from the water. he was the only person on board at the time. so, boy they got pretty lucky there. >> yeah, they did. 5:07. the panthers call california home as they prepare for super bowl 50, but the spca wants to fine homes for their -- find homes for their mini panthers coming up. >> and if you waited until the

around the area, so i want to point out some visibilities towards siler city. visit bit at two miles less than two miles in raeford, and five miles in pine hurst. the densest fog to the south and west. durham, visibility at five miles. we'll go ahead and check in with temperatures. mid-and-upper 50s in raeford. roxboro, 51. south hill, virginia, you're still in the mid-40s but don't worry, those 50s are knocking on your doorstep. no rain right now, but the rain is off to the west. just a few showers this morning. the main line i'm concerned with is showers and storms will be here this afternoon after 2:00. the main threat is going to be heavy rain, isolated storms could bring though gusty winds and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. we'll have more on this severe weather risk in the complete

8-year-old found her body. and robert durst is expected to enter a plea on felony, firearm and drug charges. the 72-year-old millionaire has been in jail since the day before the final episode of an hbo crime documentary about as own life. denver broncos player will miss accused of participating in a prostitution wing. the practice squad player was questioned and released. his brother and suspected prostitute were cited. the carolina panthers are four days away from super bowl 50 against the broncos. the game will feature two of the nfl's top defenses. it will also put rising star cam newton against future hall-of-famer peyton manning. today, repeatedly, newton spoke out about the match. >> it's a lot of things peyton has done, is doing, that i wish i could mimic, but i can't do it like peyton can. only he can do it.

51 in roxboro, and raeford, the warm spot, at 57. all of this out ahead of a cold front starting to push some scattered showers into the mountains. asheville, boone, seeing some light rain, quickly moving into the charlotte area, but look at the bigger picture, we'll show how big this system is. it's pushing rain up through new york, down through the gulf states and it's across the gulf states we saw very dangerous and severe weather, reports of tornados, in mississippi and alabama yesterday. now, i do think theirs the threat for severe weather later -- there's the threat for severe weather today, not as widespread or the magnitude across the gulf state. cloudy skies, as towards lunchtime, those scattered showers start to move in, but watch that line of storms and it's going to be pretty much right over central north carolina, right around 5 p.m. again like i said the timing with this is going to be the critical thing. gusty winds can't rule out an isolated tornado, and the main concern is going to just be the heavy downpours that we're expecting.

news and the storm system that brought some severe weather to alabama and mississippi now headed our way. it spawned a tornado about 40 miles west of tuscaloosa. in east upper mississippi, strong winds toppled power lines. thank goodness no one was injured. >> talk about ferocious. >> good morning, i'm mike gonzalez. >> and i'm stephan chase. let's head over to alyssa corfont. >> that system is moving into north carolina as we speak. in eastern portions of tennessee and kept kent, that's going to spread into the area.
