i'm really watch have gone the time frame say after 2:00 this afternoon for widespread rain and stormy activity. now the temperatures typically at this time of the morning we're saying hey they're still dropping. not the case this morning. from here on out, temperatures are going to climb. 52 in raleigh and clayton, now 53 in durham. 50 in henderson and lewisburg. raeford, 57, while fayetteville is at 55. there's a little bit of fog in and around the area this morning, 53 at 8 a.m., into the mid-60s at lunchtime. we're just starting to see the rain move in and storms possible towards 3:00 and into the evening drive home. our high around 70 degrees. we're tracking rain on thursday but we'll be cooler. i'll have the update in your complete forecast. i want to switch gears and check in with your traffic. here's i-440 and wake forest road outside of our wncn studios and you can see cars cruising

wednesday morning, so let's go ahead -- fine on this wednesday morning. i'm looking at i-40 south of downtown, heading westbound moving at about 65 miles-per-hour and cruising eastbound you're looking at very similar speeds around 65 miles-per-hour, as well. i'll have more on traffic and weather in about ten minutes. alyssa thanks so much. time now 5:31. testimony continues at the wake county courthouse of a woman killed in north raleigh. melissa huggins-jones' body was found. and in court witnesses testified her 8-year-old daughter found her body covered in blood and ran to a nearby construction worker for help. >> she had blood all over her face and blood was everywhere, and i put two fingers on her

she was cold as a block of ice. >> smith is one of three charged in this case. ronald anthony pled guilty to second-degree murder and one more hasn't going to trial. the group was breaking into cars in the area where huggins-jones was killed. they never intended to kill them they said. they were inside her apartment only to burglarize her place, but the crime quickly escalated to murder. a man accused of trying to kill his own mother is expected back in a cumberland county courtroom. kevin powell junior is charged with attempted murder after police say he shot his mother, derema burst at a fayetteville salon and spa. at last check she was? critical condition at unc -- she was in critical condition at unc hospital. today two people charged with starving a dog to death are

frankie barber and daniel derocher are charged with animal cruelty to animals and animal controls one dog found dead, and another locked in said a crate with no food and water. a today a prayer vigil will take place to honor a machine shot and killed inm dis. someone shot and killed 29 -- killed. last month police arrested 20-year-old christopher wig ins in connection with that crime. today that vigil will start at 6 p.m. on concord street. an effort to curb violent crime may get an early result. police have been searching 19 people for ties to violent crime. the number of shootings has been cut since that initiative started. the big question is will it have a lasting impact? >> we've seen a pretty significant increase in violent crime. we've made some pretty

continue to work the special operation and trying to keep the pressure at the right places with the right people. >> ten new officers took the oath of office and and will begin patrols as early as next monday. today an important meeting between wake county schools and county officials will take place. >> both sides will meet to discuss the future of school growth and how it's going to be paid for. emma wright joins us on the campus of nc state university. >> reporter: this meeting will happen every few months. today they're talking how they'll pay for new school construction and renovations. as the triangle continues to be a hot spot to live and work, wake county schools are feeling the population boom first. the number of students is growing and growing but where to put them? new school construction can't happen fast enough. >> we've got two increasing curves, one is student growth and the other is construction

>> reporter: that was wake county superintendent jim meryl last year. wncn spoke with him at a similar meeting between the board of education and wake county commissioners. 365 days have passed but the problems largely remain the same. >> i mean obviously i would prefer to not pay for other people's kids to go to school but i know it's a very important reason for money to go to. >> in 2013, voters passed an $810 million bond that allowed for the construction of 16 new schools. but some parents are upset it may mean their kids will have to switch schools. >> the commute would be closer to 20 minutes. >> over an hour on the bus on the way home. >> i can't do this anymore. >> reporter: wake county schools will work with the board of commissioners for a in the future. >> reporter: today's meeting

fog out there this morning. this could easily slow you down especially along the western fringe of the area. 53 in durham, 52 in raleigh and clayton; 54 in lillington. these temperatures continue to climb throughout the morning. i don't typically say that at this hour but it's the case for today. 47 in south hill, you'll likely be in the 50s with in the next hour or so. the satellite and radar composite, dry conditions for us but the rain is already in the state. rain showers falling around asheville and boone this morning and moving into charlotte. as we continue to track the threat for storm this is afternoon, heavy rain, a big concern for us. isolated storms bringing gusty winds and cannot rule out an isolated tornado. i'll have more on this severe weather coming up in the complete forecast. mike. >> thanks so much for that. 5:41. when carolina/denver square off for super bowl 50 there will be another battle off the field to help those in need.

december for the same exact case and his lawyers want those felony charges dismissed. a convenience store clerk taking matters into his own hands in florida. this is surveillance from the brevard county store. you can see the help as he walks in, goes around the counter, shows a gun and demands money. the clerk, a military veteran, opens up and jumped into action, wrestling the weapon away. the suspect ran away from the store. no one was injured. today a house oversight committee scheduled to hold a hear nothing washington d.c. about the safe drinking water act in flint, michigan. flint's tap water was contaminated with lead in 2014. it happened after the source switched from detroit to the flint river to save money. it was a cost-cutting move made while the city was under state financial management. the corrosive was note water was not properly treated.

temperatures very mild for this time of year. we're at 52 in raleigh, 52 in clayton, lewisburg and henderson also in the 50s. in the upper 40s around rocky mountain, and goldsboro. fayetteville and raeford, mid-and-upper 50s. that rain is starting to move into the state. asheville, boone, seeing some light rain this morning in and around the charlotte area. we could see a few showers this morning, but it's the main line of storms i'm most concerned about. it would come through with this cold front. the warm front lifting across the area and that's why these unseasonably warm temperatures are moving in. as this cold front comes closer the threat for storms is going to increase for us. have a way to get severe weather alerts. today mentioned our wncn weather app. you can track lightning and get alerts pushed to your phone. as far as the timing with this system, 7 a.m., just an isolated shower or so possible. at noon we're starting to see these scattered showers move in. look at this line of storms back

marching across central north carolina right in time for the evening drive home. heavy downpours likely accompanying this line, also the threat for gusty winds, cannot rule out an isolated tornado. this line is mostly off to the east. by midnight we're still looking at a few showers hanging around for daybreak on our thursday, and those clouds will still be here, as well. here's your severe weather outlook from the storm prediction center, damaging wind gusts, and these storms will be isolated in nature and short-lived, that's what marginal risk mean in north carolina. the threat for those showers and storms moves in at 2:00. rain moving east, a low around 52 degrees, winds coming out of the west at about midnight. you'll still see some showers on thursday, mid-50s for highs, then we're back into the 40s on

sunshine will be here so that at least will be nice. let's talk about the second ahead. 50s on saturday and sunday, an area of low pressure, off the east coast could bring us some showers into early next week monday and tuesday it looks like temperatures will be right around 50 degrees. overnight lows, as we head into early next week will also start to drop again. we could be around freezing for those overnight lows. 5:52 on this wednesday morning, we'll get to traffic and look at this i-40 and barbie road just some cars out there all cruising along it looks like at a pretty good speed. no slow downs to report if you're getting ready to head out the door. if you're coming northbound on u.s. 2, that's about a 16-minute drive between highway 55 and downtown. i-40 between 42 and downtown moving close to the posted speed limits. if you're coming in from apex, moving a little bit closer than the posted speed limit that'll cost you 20 minutes on this
