hear this awful sound. >> severe weather sweeping across the nation. >> and we'll take a look who the triangle teams hope to sign on signing day. >> we'll have more on that. for now, good morning, thanks for watching wncn i'm mike gonzalez. >> i'm stephan chase. thanks for watching. let's head straight over to our meteorologist, alyssa corfont, with what we can expect with this possibility of severe weather. >> we're watching the threat into the afternoon. this morning we're starting off on a quiet note. pretty cloudy skies but no rain moving into the area. the rain just back to the west, and these are just light showers out ahead of what i'm expecting a line to move through this afternoon after 2:00. we'll go ahead and check in with the temperatures. the past few mornings, and what is typical, continues temperatures continue to drop until sunrise. we've climbed another degree to 53. 52 in clayton, 54 in lillington,

later -- looks like sooner -- raeford is going to be in the 60s. 53, a little bit of fog out there this morning, and the showers starting to move in around lunch time looking at the chance of storms around 3:00 and continuing into your drive home. temperatures at 6 p.m. right around 65. more on that storm threat coming your way in your complete forecast. but right now let's check in with traffic. if you're heading out the door this morning, this is glenwood and blue ridge road by crabtree valley mall. it looks like everything at some intersection is moving along fine on this wednesday, but we do have a report into the wncn newsroom. it being looks like the road is blocked. this is in durham. there's report of downed power poll, and wires because of an earlier -- pole and wires because of an accident on university at the intersection of starlett drive. certainly try to avoid that this morning. >> thanks for that advice. appreciate that.

left a trail of destruction in alabama, and mississippi, as well. we're live in the breaking news center with more on the damage it last behind. >> reporter: trees are down, and a trail of destruction is left on the mississippi/alabama border. the national weather service reported a tornado on the ground 45 miles west of tuscaloosa. people there dealt with winds up to 60 miles an hour. in eastern mississippi, trees are uprooted, homes and buildings are ripped apart and power lines are scattered cross the streets. >> it got real intense for a minute. you could hear the house shaking and as soon as -- as quick as it came, it just stopped. >> thank fully no serious injuries have been reported -- thankfully no serious injuries have been reported. that system is expected to bring wind and

coming up at 6:30, we'll tell what you that storm produced in the midwest. stefan back to you. an property meeting between wake county schools and county officials is taking place. both sides will meet to discuss the future of school growth and how it's going to be paid for. we're joined from mckimmons state. >> reporter: this is one of several meetings both boards will be having together. they're talking if money, and renovations. as the triangle continues to be a hot spot to live and, what, wake county schools are feeling the population boom first. the number of students is growing and growing but where to put them. new school construction can't happen fast enough. >> the frustration for all of usa we've got two increasing curves, one is student growth and the other is construction and we can't close that gap.

pinehurst, while raeford looking at visibility at five miles. let's talk about these temperatures because again holding steady and climbing, that's a completely flip-flopped from what we see this time in the morning. 53 in sanford and pinehurst, raeford, 59 towards the eastern portions of the area. you haven't seen the warmest temperatures in move in yet, 49 in rocky mount. here's our satellite and radar composite. some light showers developing around the mountains. still back to the west is that line, and we'll be watching for the threat for not only heavy rain but also isolated storms. those storms have the potential to bring us gusty winds. can't rule out an isolated tornado. i'll have more on this storm threat coming up in the complete forecast. 6:12's your time. if you've ever been to a carolina panthers home game,

today in the case of a woman that was beat to death inside her apartment in north hills in raleigh. melissa huggins-jones' body was found in 2013. smith is accused of killing her during a botched burglary attempt. two others are charged and her 8-year-old daughter was the one who found her body. today, robert durst is expected back in a new orleans courtroom. he's expected to enter a plea on felony firearm and drug charges. the 72-year-old millionaire has been in jail since the day before the final episode of an hbo crime documentary about his life. denver broncos player will miss the big game accused of participating in some sort of prostitution ring. ryan murphy was sent home. he was questioned and released but his brother and suspected prostitute were cited. the carolina thankers are four days away from -- panthers are four days away from super bowl 50, featuring the nfl's top

and storms going to be timed perfectly for that drive home. your drive home going to take a little bit longer and you're going to be on the road with the potential for severe weather. make sure you have a way to get weather alerts pushed to your phone this afternoon. 53, our temperatures right now. we're looking out to the east from our wncn studios. cars on the belt lineup cruising along just fine, not expect -- line, cruising along just fine towards moore and hope county, and that's the warmest temperatures around. 59 in raeford, and north and east that's where some chillier air is, 48 in roanoke rapids, 49 in rocky mount. the rain is starting to move into north carolina, but these are just scattered showers out ahead of what we'll call the main line and that line expected to come through with this cold front late this afternoon into the evening hours. but the set up, ideal to see

this warm front lifting across the area so all of this warm filtering into central north carolina, there's plenty of moisture with the system. heavy rain first and foremost and embedded in that the chance for strong to severe storms. 8:00 we should be dry. lunchtime we're starting to see those scattered showers ahead of the main line back towards the charlotte area. we could be talking about damaging wind gusts and could not rule out an isolated tornado and the heavy rain is going to make that drive difficult. this line of storms is shifting off to the east through 1 a.m. and then we're going to be looking at cloudy skies and just lingering showers for day bring on thursday. so here's your severe weather outlook for today, damaging wind gusts, isolated tornado, we're all under a marginal risk, which means storms will be isolated in

for highs for today, 70 in around fayetteville, with most of the rain moving east tonight we'll still be on the mild side, low around 52. rain still hanging around on our on friday. weekend ahead looks dry on saturday, but by sunday we could be watching an area of low pressure develop up the east coast and that could bring us a few showers. just about 6:22 on this traffic. i-40 and south saunders street, south of downtown, cars are cruising along just fine. and if you're on i-540 westbound moving at about 66 miles-per-hour, very similar speeds on i-440 westbound :40 westbound this morning. another check on traffic and weather close to 6:30. it is national signing day for college football team ss.

. announcer: on air o line, wncn today starts now. all right . welcome to wednesday morning, glad you're with us for wncn today. i'm mike gonzalez. >> and i'm stephan chase. we've got emma write in raleigh previewing a meeting that could -- wright, in raleigh, previewing a meet that could impact wake county schools. >> and following the massive storm system headed our way, on that note, let's check in with alyssa corfont. how's it looking in terms of heading our way is this. >> it looks like it will arrive later this afternoon. this line of showers and storms could bring damaging winds and also the threat for an isolated tornado. here we are right now, our satellite and radar, showing the rain showers moving across the mountains approaches charlotte. most of this not going to reach out area though until close to lunchtime today. let's talk about the temperatures. normally at this point in the morning we're saying temperatures are dropping before sunrise, not the case tomorrow.

and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the day. 53 in durham and raleigh right now, 50 in lewisburg and off to the south and west, 59 as a matter of fact in raeford. so here's your forecast, the majority of you dry, 53 at 8 a.m., starting to see showers around lunchtime and 3:00 and after, showers and storms likely, a high this afternoon of 70 degrees. i'll have a close are look at that storm threat coming -- closer look at that storm threat. right now i want to check in with traffic. here's i-440 and u.s., newburn avenue, starting to see more cars through the time of the morning as we progress through the start of the day. right now an update for you. again the road is blocked, downed power lines at star light drive in durham.

power outages near university drive and starlett drive. we'll keep an eye on your conditions through the rest of the morning. a massive winter storm as alyssa was talking about is snaking its way across the country. lauren haviland is live with how it's impacting the midwest. >> reporter: a winter storm is ending. from iowa, to nebraska, to minnesota, several saw blizzard like conditions. the snow came down so quickly, the snow was heavily traveled, interstates were shut down. patrol officials are in cities along i -- emergency officials in cities along i-80 have never seen anything like this. hundreds of trucks trying to get through i-70 are stuck. the interstate isn't expected to open. there are some who just love the snow. >> we love it, love it.

and two people accused of starving a death will be in court. frankie barker and daniel derocher, charged with felony cruelty to animals. animal control tells wncn officers found one dog dead and another still alive, but locked in a metal crate with no food and water. that dog is recovering. today a prayer vigil will take place in durham to honor a man shot ask killed in december. someone shot and -- shot and killed in december. someone shot and killed orry. last month, wiggins was arrested. today's vigil starts at 6 p.m. on concord street. an effort to curb violent crime is getting results. since early december, people have been searching for 19 people with ties to violent crime. as of yesterday, they've arrested eight people.

around 4:00 this evening. we've been tracking the fog into the area. look at this. we can see that visibility dropping. this is at the raleigh durham airport. visibility is mile and a half in durham, under two miles visibility in roxboro. the worst visibility certainly west of us, visibility at two miles in sanford and siler city, and at about a mile and a half in the pinehurst area. as far as the temperatures are concerned they've been steadily climbing throughout the morning. 53 in durham, 53 in sanford, right around the mid-50s right now in lillington. the rain is still back to the west. we'll start to see just a few isolated showers around lunchtime, maybe a little before, for some of you especially along the western portions of the viewing area. it's not until the cold front moves through i'm expecting a
