now, and wayne county. as we continue east of i-95, that's where the heaviest of rain has gone. there's still rain behind it. these light to moderate showers with a much lower threat of severe weather will continue through the night, as we wait on this cold front. that cold front will definitely drop our temperatures tomorrow, but we're not going to clear out. the cold front and the rain will hang around for parts of thursday. so here's what we've got going into tonight. we're going to keep decent rain chances in through about midnight. then the rain chances start to go down, but not completely away. the front doesn't come in until the early morning hours. we're going to stay mild through tonight. out the door tomorrow, 54 degrees. for the evening commute, it is a bit messy, again, the worst of the weather is behind us, but we've got slow downs south

440 west of town is slow. it's going to take a while to get home tonight because of the rain, and tomorrow, we drop the temperatures. we'll talk about how cold it's eventually going to get. a messy drive across the triangle tonight. this video from capital boulevard at the heightest evening rush. you can see the rain slowing things down there. a crew in this area, keeping police out of the right lane. >> here's a live look at road conditions. you're looking at i-40 at fayetteville street. >> reporter: we're entering into durham right now on i-40 westbound. let's give alook at what things are shaping up like on i-40. we've already seen two wrecks. state troopers on scene. as you can see, the rain is a steady downpour here.

>> you can see the plan actually right here, it's overall supported by town leaders, but has some homeowners worried. live in southern wake county, carly. >> reporter: yeah, we're out next to tin tin road, which is in the area where this proposed orange route is expected to be passing through. although nc d.o.t. officials say this orange route will affect the fewest number of people, like you said, it's not very comforting for homeowners. >> reporter: after months of discussing which route would be the best to complete the 540 loop, they're discussing which route they would like to see in place. the orange, green, and mint routes would round out the expressway. nc d.o.t. says it's the least expensive

that's including the actual construction and land acquisition. 271 residents, 6 businesses, three nonprofit organizations, and one farm would be affected. we spoke to folks near lake wheeler who say they're against the orange route, because it would run right in through their community. >> it would come into the neighborhood and some of the houses on that side would be impacted. if the neighborhood continues to grow, houses on this side would be impacted. >> reporter: the number of people impacted could decrease. >> once a decision is made, and we have chosen a preferred alternative, then we are going to further refine those designs within that corridor, with the goal of minimizing impacts. >> reporter: we also spoke to the mayors of garner, holly springs, and fuquey arena. we're expected to see a final decision by spring, and

section 1 of the orange route in 2018. in wake county, carleigh griffeth, wncn news now. police say they know who is responsible for hacking grades. a 17-year-old is facing several felony charges. warrants obtained by wncn show investigators took a laptop and several flash drives from his home. the warrants also show he raised his class rank from 67th to 7th. ranks of five other students were changed. he could face up to four and a half years behind bars. also new at 6:00, troopers say an off duty raleigh officer had been drinking when he was involved in a collision near

taylor hurst blue a .17. an all clear at a durham hotel after someone called in a bomb threat, forcing patrons out. the call came in just before 11:00, people were allowed back in around 1:00. it's day two in the trial for one of the men charged with killing a mom in her north hills apartment. more witnesses took the stand today. >> the prosecution spent the day, showing the jury how police built their case against the suspects. connecting a burglary and the theft of some laptops to the murder. >> reporter: the onsight manager testified, the leasing office was just below huggins- jones' apartment, and had been broken into the same night she was murdered. lee says she kept the boxes with the serial numbers which helped detectives. >> were you able to get them as best as you could? the serial numbers from the box

>> reporter: clint merit testified that he found the missing laptops. >> he found a craigslist ad, and one of the photos showed that window's serial number on one of the screen shots of the machine. with that we were able to positively identify that that was the machine based on its windows serial number. >> reporter: travion smith was picked up after another detective posing as a buyer met to meet with the seller of the laptop. >> i wept to the wal-mart to meet mike to purchase the laptop. >> reporter: mccollum says police raided his home, arrested him, and seized a laptop that travion gave him so sell. he told the detectives -- >> i didn't know anything of a murder or anything at this point in time. whatever you're looking for, they have it. i got it from travion. >> reporter: mccollum says when

fewer students are pursuing a teaching education. >> reporter: concern, alarmed. a unc system official says the number of education majors isis way down in north carolina public universities. >> i love children and children are the future. >> reporter: there are lots of reasons why people choose to be teachers. for nc state education major, allaina moore, she remembers her teachers' impact on her. but the number of students who turn to the education field is getting smaller. >> we're really seeing a decline across the spectrum. >> reporter: a unc official told them since 2010, the number of people who enroll in education has dropped 30% in north carolina. >> obviously, a 30% decline since 2010 is very concerning. >> reporter: last week, some state school superintendents spoke before a legislative committee, saying they've had trouble filling some job

the north carolina association of educators, tells us teachers salary and general funding are reasons why. >> the lack of value of respect that north carolina and our general assembly is showing for teachers is pushing people out. >> reporter: jerry tillman points to recent raises for teachers, upping the starting salary for teachers to $35,000 a year. he says there needs to be a better teacher training program. whatever the numbers are, moore tells us, she's just going to focus on her dream. >> all you can do is continue to work hard, and prove that you deserve the pay. >> reporter: the unc system is setting enrollment growth goals and recruiting people to education. they've set up a new website to help people with those efforts.

network of d.o.t. cams. this is i-50, and i-540. >> if you get to i-40, the last time i checked we didn't have an interstate 50 here. but they're all wet. the leading edge of the storms is starting to push east of i- 95. for those of you down in sampson county, wayne county, east of fayetteville and down there in cumberland county, that's where the heaviest rain is. there is a little bit of thunder out there, and the old folklore that everyone reminds me, if you hear thunder in winter in north carolina, you can expect snow in ten days. the science is, if the atmosphere is active enough that it can produce thunder in february, it's probably is still active enough that cold

you know what happens next. that's kind of the theory behind that. i have changes in the forecast that have us looking for something like that. it's still in the 70s along the coast. we're still in the 60s. yes, it is going to get colder there, but not really tonight. the cold front doesn't actually come through until the early morning hours. we're going to keep good chances of scattered showers. that severe threat continues to get lower and lower as we go through tonight. look at the temperatures, they stay in the low 60s through midnight. then we'll sneak into the 50s. you're out the door tomorrow morning, 54 degrees. the difference tomorrow is it's not really going to warm up at all. that cold front will slowly move through overnight. then it's going to hang around, and so will the rain. so here's what the next 24 hours will look like. let's pick up in the early morning hours, 4:00 a.m. you see the showers lingering, specialtd along the coast.

be dry for a good many of us, but some of us will have light to pesky rain out there. here we are at lunchtime. a lot of us still dry. clouds are still around. look what comes riding up that cold front. an area of low pressure. timey, as we get into late thursday night, and early friday morning, the area of low pressure, the cold front, the rain, and the clouds all start to move out of here, so we'll improve quickly on friday. so tomorrow, cold front and rain still kind of linger around. but it's not going to be in the 70s. it will be noticeably colder tomorrow, and it will continue to stay chilly friday through saturday. those are the two best days on it's seven-day forecast. because it now looks like an area of low pressure is going to be closer to our coastline as we get into sunday and monday, bringing us chances of rain, because it's going to be close to freezing at night, meaning early morning, and late

still a long way to go and a lot of uncertainty. tomorrow, still going to be a chilly day. cloudy as well, with scattered showers the farther east you go, drier, the farther west you go. in your seven-day forecast, it will take us from the 70s today, down to 56 tomorrow. 49 friday, and then 52 on saturday. those are my two favorite days here. that chance of rain friday is early, early in the morning. but look at this. you know, it's going to be in the 50s tomorrow morning. look at friday morning, saturday, and sunday morning. temperatures start around freezing. so it's going to get cold. then we get into next week, it's going to get even colder. those 70s will be a distant memory next week. as you can see, we do have some precipitation in the forecast right now. officially everything i have there is rain, but in a could change. our 3-degree guarantee high tomorrow is 56. today we made it to 72. we had forecast 70.
