good morning. 27 degrees at 6 a.m. to wake you up. here's a live look at raleigh. you see a few cars traveling along just fine this morning. thanks for watching this week ends edition of wncn today. a little bit of frost out there this morning. this morning. >> temperatures this morning actually in the 20s right now. so it is a very chilly morning, we are actually going to be warming up a bit today but it's afternoon. we've got a lot of sunshine in the forecast so nothing to worry about as far as wet weather goes today. that's not going to be the case for tomorrow. temperatures cold as

it's currently 27 degrees in raleigh. it's 29 degrees in fayetteville. now, these temperatures going to oy into the 50s this afternoon. so we've got more sunshine on the way today thanks to an area of high pressure. temperatures staying on the cool side of things. only warming up to about 50 degrees by 4:00 this afternoon. tonight clouds thicken up ahead of an area of low pressure and we've got a chance of seeing a few rain showers for some of us. temperatures still right around 50s degrees so i'll breakdown the forecast and let you know what you can expect coming newspaper a few minutes. a developing story that broke last night and could change voting districts across our state. two districts have been broken down. the districts in the 12th in greenville and

the judges say the districts majority black congressional districts and must be redrawn. it's a move that the co-chairman says could be unprecedented. >> i've never seen a court order lines to be redrawn without even having a hearing to determine the election itself. >> the judges ordered lawmakers to come up with a new boundary in two weeks. north carolina or march 15th. republican presidential hopefuls preparing for tonight's debate and all candidates stamping are for votes. on the democratic side hillary clinton had an event focussing on women. the latest poll show she is not

real senator sanders is expected maybe a few wet snowflakes mixing in but i do think that we're mainly looking at rain which for some of us will be as early as tomorrow. outside our satellite and radar currently not showing anything in the way of wet or wintry precipitation and it's cold.

our temperature in raleigh, 27 in durham, 23 in louisburg, 29 in rocky mount and fayetteville, 29 also in littleton, 24 in sanford, and roxboro. we've got more sunshine in the forecast for today. we're going to be staying cool thanks to this area of high pressure that began building in yesterday. a lot of sunshine but temperatures hovering right around that 50-degree mark. so after a cold start to our morning we are mostly sunny as we head through this afternoon, staying cool 50 degrees at 3:00 this afternoon. more clouds rolling in this evening. about 6 p.m. temperatures falling to 42 degrees and then we're tracking a coast at all low pressure system which may bring us some rain for some of us at least late tonight and tomorrow. >> thanks. the entire segment of a north carolina military population may be leaving the state, the effects of the

good morning. here's a look at some of today's top stories. rescues underway in tie wayne where at least 7 people dead and four injured after an earthquake.

highrise apartment towers, hundreds of people have been rescued so far. heavy snowfall in massachusetts causes a branch to fall killing a little girl. a 6-year old died after being pinned under the branch. police warn people to stay indoors if possible. the on the moon has died. mitchel died thursday night after a short illness. he was 85 years old. nasa called him a pioneer. his passing could insides with the anniversary of the apollo mission. right now a hard fought battle seems to be over at fort brag now the air force and army moving forward with plans to shut a local air lift wing. it's a huge hit for the local economy. >> it's disappointing but not shocking.

the last two years that the air force wanted to deactivate the air lift wing and now army leaders signed off on it. >> this is a letter that went to the committees. it explains that theirsing budget pressures have led them to manage the fleet in the most efficient manner as possible and by that they expressed their intention to deactivate the air lift wing. in a statement the air force said closing a wing is a complex task with a multitude of associated actions. responsible transfer of the aircraft and taking care of the nearly 700 airmen still in the wing our concerns. >> we put the air and airborne but got to wait for the air to get here from arkansas or florida. >> a former chairman has been working with lawmakers along

representatives pushing to keep the wing activated. he's concerned that it could affect the readiness and training of armed services. >> when they have to go jump and when they are called for specific duties they need to have the capabilities of moving in a pretty rapid situation >> then there's the economic impact. when the wing is shuttered there will be 700 less airmen and families in the area. that could run up to tens of millions of dollars. >> a lot of businesses trying to make sure that they don't go under because they are closing it. >> that's not good for me. i'm in sales so a lot of customers here mine. >> the letter triggering a 90-day review period, meanwhile the air force says it plans to deactivate the wing this september. . good saturday morning. outside we are still waiting on

it's dark we can see one of the buildings in downtown raleigh lit up blue because in case you haven't heard we've got a big football going on tomorrow. super bowl sunday. it's hard to believe it's already here. outside currently waking up to come cold temperatures a little bit of frost out there but nothing popping up on our are sat right and radar. currently just a few clouds here and there but we'll see mostly sunny skies today. it's 27 degrees in raleigh and durham. 24 in sanford. those some of the colder spots this morning. 29 degrees in fayetteville, and we are going to be warming up today under sunny skies but temperatures will fall just shy of normal for this time of year by a few degrees. so by 10 a.m. we're up to 36, 43 at lunchtime, 47 at 2, 50 our high temperature by 4:00 this afternoon with more

this big air of high pressure over top of us for today. it's going to stay put leading to go sunshine across the area. now, tomorrow that's when we start to see some changes rolling through. so that area of high pressure slides off to our northeast and makes room for a coast at all low pressure system to slide up you from the south. this system depending on exactly where it's located off the coast will bring some of us a chance for rain as opposed to others. mostly southeast of raleigh the best chance of seeing some of that wet weather rolling through and we may have a few wet snowflakes mixing in with some of the rain showers at times early tomorrow morning. so we'll keep a close eye on it but a very low to no impact snow event for us us because it is going to be mostly rain and that's southeast the triangle at least the best chance for tomorrow. that low slides to the northeast as we head into monday. that makes room for our next cold front to arrive. now, we will be dry for the first part of the day monday this cold

rain showers monday evening and then once again fending on the exact time of the arrival of this precipitation we may see a few wet snowflakes mixing in. here's our you future cast showing things staying distribute and quiet for today. now, by late tonight here's that coast at all low pressure system and notice the best chance for that wet weather going to be across the sand hills southeast the triangle here. as it gradually lifts out to the northeast we may see some of rain creeping a little bit further to the north and again, a few wet snowflakes mixing in in some spots but a difference of 25 miles from the center of this low will mean the difference between rain or no rain for many of us arched the area. so we'll still put in a chance for at least a little bit of wet weather for tomorrow. for today we're looking at a high of 50 degrees in raleigh,

he's one of the two high school students competing in the u.s. olympic trials in greensboro. he's been playing for 7 years and an early encounter with a friend shaped his future. >> i like to win and after i got my butt kicked i decided i didn't want to let that happen any more. >> students train for, and another trains as well and heads off to greensboro with no expectations. >> that's not my goal. it's just to enjoy the sport. >> still competitive juices will get flowing and she's had some thoughts of making magic at the trials. >> she's upsetting so many people but you realize that the people that are trying out

before falling to 42 at 6 p.m. clouds increase tonight. emergency crews in tie wayne say the death total in today's earthquake has claimed to 7. more than 400 were injured. the national fire agency reports that 9 buildings have collapse and five have tilted. rescue efforts have been focused on the rub bell of a 17 story building. 11 still believed to be missing. the earthquake struck around 4 a.m. local time. the 6th man to walk on the moon has died, mitchel died thursday night after a short illness. nasa calls him a pioneer of space exploration in his later years the astronaut spoke out by his belief that aliens had visited earth and

the trio at a marijuana anonymous meeting, and at one point spectators and the media were barred from the court as a confidential informant testified only to the jury. the judge took that step because of death threats made against the witness. the prosecution is expected to call more witnesses on monday. durham police say they are tackling crime by outsourcing evidence processing. for nearly 3 years dpd has been using a private lab to process evidence in crimes like murder and rape. officers also use similar arrangements in greensboro. it allows investigators to skip backlogs. a mother whose son became the first murder victim of 2016 says she supports the program. >> they will be able to help more families and bring the crime down.

private crime labs has cost durham about $56,000. parents grieving this morning in massachusetts after heavy snow caused a branch to fall and kill a 6-year old girl. this is the little girl ask her family says she ran into the yard to play in the snow when a branch 30 feet above her cracked be and fell striking and inning her to the ground. >> she was let's go make a snow man and the next thing i know a tree broke and fell on her, and i ran out trying to lift her out of there, and couldn't. >> a neighbor heard the dad scream and the helped perform cpr. she died less than five hours later. police and fire urging people to stay inside following the didn't. a crane collapsed yesterday in new york city and a camera captured the moment that it fell on a manhattan street crumbling

a mid-air crash and says at least one small plane we want down. to word on how many people were aboard. the bmx community is mourning the loss of legendary rider dave mirra. he was found thursday afternoon. police say he died from a self inflicted gunshot wound but did not leave a suicide note. he was a key part of putting the state and the city of greenville on the map. his death has left his family, fans and community to wonder why, a question we may never know. >> seeing that someone has passed away that basically started it all, it's awful. >> everyone's saddened by his loss and it really impacted a bunch of people. >> celebrities and friends expressing their cone dole less than success on line.

will be a celebration of the show past, present and future. and the super bowl forecast actually looking really warm in santa clara, california. kick off is 6:30 p.m., that's eastern time so it's the middle of the afternoon on the west coast, 3:30. 73 degrees for the temperature at kick off. by the time the last play gets underway 64 degrees winds at 8 to 12 miles an hour, but a beautiful day in california for the super bowl and not looking too bad outside in our area either. check this out, this is the view from our wncn tower camera looking toward the east. skies getting brighter ahead that have sunrise which is about 7:11 this morning. so et cetera getting a little bit earlier each day here. our satellite and radar is showing just a few clouds moving free through. we've got mostly cloudy skies though if the forecast or today and although temperatures chilly to start the morning we are going to be warming up, 27 degrees is the current temperature. it's 29 degrees in

in greensboro, 29 in rocky mount, 27 in henderson. this afternoon temperatures will be warming up under those sunny skies. by lunchtime we're up to 43, 47 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon our high topping out around 50 but the sunshine sticks around all day and with the exception of just a few high clouds we're looking mostly sunny thanks to that area of high pressure. now, that high starts to slide off to the northeast tomorrow and that allows for this next area of low pressure this coastal low to move up from the south. so depending on the exact position of that low, that will be the difference between who sees rain and who sees no precipitation at all. so a shift of just 25 miles in each direction may mean the difference between rain in littleton and a completely dry day. so we're keeping a close eye on this one for tomorrow. we may have a few wet snowflakes mixing in especially

it's going to be a minimal to no impact event. and then eventually changing over to all rain. the system slides off to the northeast for monday. we get a brief break on monday, mostly cloudy skies though sticking around, ask then our next cold front moves in in and that's going to bring us some wet weather as we head through monday evening and early tuesday morning and depending on the exact arrival of the precipitation we may also have a few wet snowflakes mixing in late monday, early tuesday. our future cast is showing things dry and quiet for today. and then overnight tonight we have our first little band of wet weather hog in so that first little shower threat as we head through midnight and then as we move through the morning hours tomorrow you can see the system starts to slide off to the northeast a bit and that means a better chance for wet weather in

college students right here in some students at duke university taking their design skills into space. >> they even attached a go pro camera to each of the balloons to record the journey. >> 3, 2, 1 >> we launched two other balloons into the other atmosphere. >> a huge accomplishment for one group of students who began their project with one goal to collect weather data from high

>> the whole purpose was to have these different subgroups in our team of 12 people all working on different parts of the project. >> their team work paid -- paid off ande t was a a success. >> it went very smoothly, this was a homemade antenna. >> they built much of the equipment launched by the weather balloons themselves spending countless hours perfecting their designs >> i'd say collectively, you know, 12 people working on the two balloons easily was over 500 hours. >> and they had to consider many environmental factors as the balloons traveled more than 20 miles into the atmosphere like harsh temperatures and wind. after they popped their equipment was recovered more than 100 miles from their launch location. >> this one land in a bog out in eastern north carolina. >> and now comes the analysis of the weather data.
