watching. glad that you're with us. >> we begin with our big story this morning, the weather. >> that's right a winter weather advisory prompted schools to make some changes to today's schedules. >> all these schools closed today, rocky mount, roanoke rapids, wayne and wilson county schools. franklin county is on a two hour delay. >> good morning. >> good morning. and good morning to you at home as well. that's exactly right. we've been talking about the chance for winter weather today and this advisory. here it is and as you can see it will go into effect at 7 a.m. including all of the 95 corridor even includes some of you down around the sand hills. now, i do think more of you around the sand hills will see more of a wintry mix but again it's cold enough that any sleet, freezing rain conditions or snow will immediately stick to untreated roads. so that's

here we're looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies. very light in nature around ashville, a little more snow as you make your way further west towards tennessee this morning. here i'm not expecting any of the snow to start until say 10 a.m. and it will be pretty scattered as well. so you'll get through your morning drive it's close to lunchtime that we'll have to worry about the wintry weather. in the mean times here's a look at your temperatures, rocky mount you're at 26, henderson and roanoke rapids both at 25, and south hill, good morning, you're at 21. so here's your fast forecast, for this friday mid-20s at 8 a.m., dry for your morning drive, lunchtime today close to 32, so that's when we're starting to see some of the accumulating snow move through, a wintry mix falling across the sand hills high today 35 and then most of us dry again by the evening drive home. we'll get to more on your forecast and the cold weekend ahead at the moment.

i-40 and page road in both directions moving freely. roads dry but for many of you you'll notice that they've been treated especially the primary roads. we'll get to more on that from emma wright but right now let's check in with your live drive conditions. we have this hazard yesterday it's more of an alert, nc 540 the shoulders closed in both directions that's between exits 54 and 69. from time to time we've been seeing some slowing. they're doing maintenance on the shoulder so make sure you're merging over a lane or two and giving them plenty of room to do their work. more in about 10 minutes. right now everyone is waiting to see what impact if any the winter weather will have on our roads. >> and emma wright had been driving around all morning. >> yeah, we've covered quite a bit of ground it morning and haven't seen any snow, sleet rain or ice just yet. so that's good news for anyone who's out and about driving around this morning.

just us and a few trucks right now. we are on 795 north, we're head today wilson. these some of the areas where schools have already been cancelled for the day. we were on 70 east before, you could see they have laid a ton of brine down on those roads, 795 you can see the same. it's kind of harded to tell in the dark but the white lines you see on the pavement that aren't the actually, you know, lines on the pavement, but the grayish looking white lines that is the brine that they have put down in preparation for this upcoming storm. we've seen brine on all of the main roads that we've driven son so far this morning. we were on 440, 40, and 70, and now 795, everything looking good. we haven't seen any ice although it is cold enough if there is some water it will be frozen on those roads. so you want to keep that in mind when you're heading out and about this morning. so far things looking dry. we'll keep an eye

hodges creek apartment complex. two men charged with his murder. friends believe the men called the taxi to rob him saying he was shot over just $13. durham public schools sending a message to the government don't arrest our students it comes on the heels of the arrest of this student on january 28th. he was on his way to riverside high school when he was caught in an immigration raid. his sister says he entered the country illegally in 2014. he now awaits deportation. the district's board of education passioned a resolution calling for the arrest to end. students at the high school which has the largest hispanic population in the district has fallen by at least 20% surrounding fears of more raids. the state is planning to take a closer look at what's causing problems for thousands of customers of blue cross blue shield of north carolina. insurance commissioner spoke to wncn, he says he met with the company's executive this week

facing may not be resolved for months. those include issues with billing and verifying coverage. the department of insurance is launching a formal examination of the company after receiving more than 1,000 complaints from customers since early january. >> the examination will help us learn about what has happened to prompt those complaints, what caused it, how -- what can be down to prevent it from happening again and really how it happened and by whom. >> they apologized for the ongoing problems. at the same time all this is going on the company is considering getting out of the affordable care act marketplace. they say consistently losing money on these plans puts all of our customers at risk. we're doing everything we can to participate but must evaluate the afford ability of any plans we offer our customers for 2017. the unc board of goes is expected to meet for the second

recovering this morning after a crash last month. he was walking to check out another accident when an suv lost controlled and hit him. he severely injured his legs and head but is expected to recover but unbelievable video. crews searching for what caused this massive warehouse. it happened at an industrial park. strong winds made it difficult for the firefighters. a battle is brewing in the bull city concerning body cameras for their police officers. still to come what city leaders worried about when it comes to the cameras. >> plus soon you can head to the grocery store and get a tattoo.

in t a winter weather advisory will be in effect today for much of our viewing area. >> the do it t spent days putting brine on the roads. >> the medical examiner is set to testify again monday in the jones murder trial. smith is accused of beating the woman to death in her apartment two years ago. yesterday a dna expert testified that neither smith's nor the other suspects dna were found at the murder seen. presidential candidates faced off in a debate last night. clinton said the kind of criticism she's hearing from sanders is criticism she would expect from a republican. right now more than 50 inmates dead in a prison in northeastern mexico. 12 others were hurt after a riot broke out. relatives of the inmates went to the prison demanding answers. it is the deadly east prison riot in years. the law enforcement

the deaths of four officers in two days. one was killed in north carolina and the other in georgia. wednesday two were shot and killed in maryland. city council members at odds when it comes to police body cameras. in just a few days they'll take a vote on whether to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to outfit ever officer with a body camera. the issue some concern about a provision that will keep the videos secret. former nc state professor charged with stealing money from student organizations is under monitoreded house arrest until his next court date. he's charged with three counts of embezzlement. he's ban professor for 18-year now and was an advisor for several clubs on campus. police say he used that role to funnel out thousands of dollars for his own personal use. former unc board of

will be here and we'll have updates online and on our evening news. back in the weather center with meteorologist alyssa corfont and we've got that winter weather advisory coming and you say the snow is not going to be too bad. >> about a half an inch here, now, if you're east of 95 there's some areas that could see closer to an inch but that's going to be far east of us here. watch the bridges and overpasses today. the bus stop forecast showing this this morning cloudy skies, 25 for the kids heading out early this morning, 35 afternoon highs. so as you're sending the kids out the door make sure they have the gloves, hats they'll need it all. some light snow possible for an afternoon high we're looking at 35 degrees. here's a live picture out at the airport this morning. we're also in the mid-20s right now if you're heading out and about just layer up make sure you're giving your vehicle plenty of time to warm

have to watch your cars over the weekend because temperatures could stay below freezing for close to 48 hours but before we get to the cold rushing in this weekend we have to talk about today and right now we're looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies around the triangle, back to our west they've already seen a few light snow showers move across the mountains. most of the activity falling across tennessee but you can see it's very light in nature and that's going to be the key and the tricky part with today's system. it is going to be very light, and here around the triangle a dusting to a half an inch at most. current temperatures 26 in raleigh, 26 in durham, also in the mid-20 necessary roxboro while sanford, pinehurst both at 27, clinton and clayton you're now at 30 degrees. so here's what you need to know as you're planning your day: cloudy skies at 8 a.m., 26 degrees best chance for the wintry weather smack dab in the middle of the day. 32 our temperature at noon, high of

so something a little out of the ordinary they can see more snow along the outer banks down around the sand hills this is going to be mainly a wintry mix, again still watch for the bridges and overpasses, untreated roads could certainly be slick today. this advisory goes into effect at 7 a.m., continues through 7 p.m. for all of these areas shaded in blue. it does not include durham and orange counties if you're further west i'm expecting just a few flurries, dusting at most. so 35 in raleigh today, 34 in durham, 39 in fayetteville. fast forward to tonight clearing skies, still cold 23 at you're waking up saturday morning. let's talk about the weekend 34 tomorrow, plenty of sunshine, sun some of you will not get above freezing. so about 48-hour below freezing. monday still has a lot of question marks for us but it will likely

a man is being hailed hero. a man was running away from officers when another man casually stuck out his leg and tripped him. that allowed the officers to catch up with and arrest the would be drug dealer. a. >> there had you go. all right it's time to hang 10 in california. the big waive surf contest takes place today near half-moon bay. it can't be seen from land. it happens a half mile off shore and the waives is reach up to 60 feet high. the first competition took place in 1999 and has become very popular with professional surfers. today president obama will appear on the ellen show. she tweeted a photo of the two on the set yesterday. he was in california for several fund-raisers and accepted the invitation to chat with her. he appeared on the show in 2007 when he was just a candidate.

wncn today at 4. and i always love the way she questions people. a tennessee congressman wants to put a stop to the shrinking airline seats. >> he introduced a bill to make the faa establish minimum standards for how big the seats have to be. he says it's for health and safety. the average width of a seat has shrunk since the 1990s from 18 and a half inches to 16 and a half inches. well later this year you may be able to get a tattoo inside one of whole foods 365 shops. businesses will operate less than the grocery stores and the businesses could range from juice stands to tattoo parlors. a website says the company wants to partner with start ups and established brands to help enhance the experience.
