you're in the mood here we go again extreme cold impacting the triangle. glad that you're with us this morning. let's go ahead and get an' date from meteorologist alyssa corfont. >> good morning to you at home. yeah, we're cold and we're now tracking wintry weather falling for some of you crooks portions now, in this evening. up to a half an inch of snow possible in some areas and that could cause some slick roads. we're looking at all the counties shade in blue. here's a live picture outside if you're

you're dealing with these gray overcast conditions, and that's just the beginning of it. snow is on the way. it's falling back to our west. so here's our sat right radar composite over the past few hours we've been watching it move across the western portions of the state. now, within the past hour or so it's really starting fall in central north carolina. down across the sand hills we're seeing some light snow and as temperatures begin to climb we'll see it turn into more of a wintry mix. and also towards clinton in the northeastern portions. this is gradually going to move into harnett county. we're still dry they time being. 29 in durham ask raleigh right now. 33 in littleton. our forecast for the afternoon here in the triangle will be at 32, some snow and ice possible at noon, wintry mix continues through 3:00 and considerably dryer by the evening drive home at 6 p.m. this evening. more on the

to pick up their kids. this call was made around 9:00 this morning though other school systems decided last night to cancel school. i asked why the decision was made today to dismiss early. she told me leaders continued to monitor the forecast this morning and determined dismissing at this time would allow them to get everyone home safely. that's a process that takes about two hours to do and since students still came to school today that helps them get in required instructional hours and you all after school activities also cancelled here in johnston county. well, in this weather keeping warm is crucial right now but you want to make sure you're keeping safe whether you're on the roads or staying home. for your vehicle check the battery, oil and tire pressure before heading out and firefighters warn you to take precautions with space heaters

word on who was shot or whether an arrest was made. police say the shots were fired about half an hour ago as a high school and we'll stay on top of that throughout the morning. the state is planning to take a closer look at what's causing problems for thousands of customers of plus cross blue shield of north carolina. insurance commissioner spoke to wncn. he says he met with the company's executives this week and heard the problems customers facing may not be resolved for months. those includes issues with billing and verifying coverage. the department of insurance is launching a formal examination of the company after receiving more than 1 you thousand complaints from customers. >> had this particular examination will help us learn about what has happened to prompt those complaints, what caused it, what can be down to re event it from happening again and really it how it happened and by whom. >> they apologized for the ongoing problems. at the seam time all of this is going on they're considering getting out of the affordable care act

for several clubs on campus. university police say he used that role to funnel out thousands of dollars for his own personal use. the school says he resigned one day before he was arrested. prosecutors rested their case in the murder trial of smith. the raleigh man is charged with killing huggins-jones nearly 3 years ago in her apartment in raleigh. experts return to the stand today. if he's convicted he could face the death penalty. raleigh police looking for another suspect in the murder of a local taxi driver. he was shot mobbed morning at an apartment complex on hodges creek drive. thursday friends and co-workers honored the 55-year old with a long line of taxi during a funeral processing. currently two men charged with his murder. fayetteville police searching for a man linked to a homicide investigation. boyd faces murder and robbery charges. they believe he shot

they found the man's body tuesday morning. a clear message from durham public schools to the government. leave our students alone. this all comes after a man was arrested january 28th in an immigration reed. he was on his way to riverside high school at the time. his sister says her brother entered the country illegally in 2014 and now awaits deportation. the board of education passed a resolution calling for the arrests to end. since then attendance has fallen by 20%. unc system president elect margaret spellings is expected to take some questions from the media today. yesterday she discussed some of the goals that #12450ed like to accomplish once she takes over the job next month. >> i'm going to get about the campuses in my first hundred days on the job. those all scheduled. i know that i'll be seeing you many of you around

visit to california. you can watch it right here on wncn. it starts at 4:00. and it might be a good day to stay inside and watch a little television, right. >> i'm a big fan so i'll be watching it for sure. snow expected later today. some of you already starting to see the snow and with that being said i'll started you off with another look at this advisory. now, in effect through 7 p.m. this evening. we could see some icy spots on roads. it's not going to be a widespread event for us. we're not going to see roads shut down or that kind of nature because we're not as expecting as much snow, sleet to fall. but again, this advisory in effect until 7 p.m. up to a half an inch of snow in some parts and it looks like it's getting ready to fall. as we look towards downtown our temperature still below freezing at 29 degrees. you can see it's starting to move in. et cetera

it's down towards the sand hills and back to our west seeing some very light snow. key words here light is what we're seeing. we're seeing a band of a few flurries right along the virginia border communities and then we look down towards the sand hills seeing some light snow right now we're looking at fayetteville spring like off to the east towards portions of sam son county as well. you can see clinton seeing some light snow but south you see extreme southern portions of the county under pink. that's an indicator that warmer air is starting to move in and of course that will keep any totals really down for you down around the sand hills. so here's your hourly forecast breaking it down for you we'll be right around freezing at noon today. 2:00 the best chance for any of the weather to fall. hour our high 35, your drive home could easily be dry, nothing actually falling from the sky, however what's on the roadways really watch the

that. now, a lot of the area roads have been treated just watch out for slick spots back and i do expect us to be dry. here's what it looks like on our future forecast at noon we're still looking at that unsettled weather, that's going to spread northward around the triangle. now, this is the latest update watch it actually keeps the snow county. so we'll continue to watch this as it develops this afternoon. 5 p.m. most of what's falling is right around the 95 corridor ask then it's out of this area. by midnight skies clearing and we'll continue to see the clouds break up as we head towards day break. we know at this time of year clear skies mean very cold temperatures for the neck morning. so i'll get to more of that in a moment. here's again what we're expecting from now through 6 p.m. this evening, less than a half an inch of snow generally around this area.

includes harnett county, johnston county, franklin county up towards the virginia border. now, the area shade in blue that's where i think we'll see the highest totals close to an inch in our area but along the coast they could see closer to 2 inches and already seeing that transition my a wintry mix so the totals very small around the sand hills. your temperatures this morning 29 in durham, roxboro and raleigh at freezing clayton and goishgs 34 in clinton. so our high today in raleigh 35, 34 in durham, close to 39 in fayetteville, fast forward to tonight clearing skies, a low right around 23 degrees and we'll go ahead and talk about the weekend and how cold it is going to be. i do wanted to talk more about sunday because that's going to be the coldest day for us. we're likely going to start the morning off in the teens. some of you will stay the at or below freezing as we head into the
