and some of the greatest hurricanes in his tir hit the ice in raleigh. we'll check out today's alumni game. but the big story tonight, a winter weather advisory in effect as raun, snow, and sleet are headed our way. good evening. thanks for joining us. after the coldest morning of the season, central north carolina is now preparing for another dose of wintry precipitation. let's get right to meteorologist bill. >> yeah. monday morning is going to be a mess. let's take a look at the temperature right now. 29. we stayed below freezing all day long. coming up. advisory. it's until 1:00 on monday except for roxboro. it goes for 9 p.m.. the last places to clear and change to rain will be up in roxboro. everybody else, it goes until 1:00. that tells you that, yes, we are going to have wintry precipitation in the morning but going to see warmer air come in. by the way, there's a little freezing rain advisory, counties to the south. the winter storm warning is in

at least we don't have to deal with that. so what's happening is out here to the west, there's low pressure, and that's going to track towards us but go right over us. when it does, it'll bring the warmer air in, but out ahead of it, you see snow up through kentucky. all this is moving toward the east, and it's going to be snow for us and sleet when it starts. couple echoes showing up around greensboro, but the air is so dry, going to take a while for that to reach the ground. in other words, we won't see anything until after midnight to want. everybody in the 20s, fayetteville stayed below freezing at 30 degrees. as we take a look at the forecast this evening, should be dry but cloudy. we'll flatten out through the mid 20s, maybe a flurry or two by the time we talk to you at 11:00, but it's tomorrow, so here is what you can expect. 9 a.m., snow, sleet, and freezing rain, but you'll see it, also, at 6 a.m., too. so when you get up to go, at least president's day, so a lot of folks don't have school, but i know wake county does. you can see this pink, meaning it'll be snow, sleet, and freezing rain. we'll see that, also, at

starting to come in, and then as we head toward the afternoon hours, we're going to see rain by 3:00, and then it's going to start to warm up. we'll tell you how warm it's going to get for tuesday and how much rain we're going to get and, also, we'll time out and tell you how much sleet and snow and freezing rain we'll get coming up in a few minutes. get ready for kind of a bad travel morning tomorrow. orange county schools have already announced o two-hour delay for tomorrow. it's possible other districts may join them throughout the night. remember, you can keep up with weather alerts, closings, delays, and everything you need to know wherever you are with the wncn news now and weather mebl apps. cumberland county is among the counties to activate white flag emergency inclement weather shelter options. various shelters will be opened for extended hours until the middle of next week as freezing temperatures sweep through the area. an 11-year-old girl is in the hospital after being shot this afternoon. happened about 12:30 at a home in nightdale.

carly. >> yeah. maggy, it happened in the 200 block of colchester drive. it's kind of dark now. you can't see much. there's not much of a scene anymore. we do have video from earlier today when the accident 2:30. i said "accident. yet. i meant ings dent. sheriff donny harrison said investigators are still working to gather more information. as of now, it does in the look like this was any criminal intent in this case, but it is too soon to say that it was for sure an accident. they are still investigating this, but we do know that an 11-year-old girl was taken to wake med where she is still being treated. we do not know her condition as of now. again, an 11-year-old girl shot and taken to the hospital. sheriff donny harrison still working on the investigation. as soon as we know any new information, we will bring that to you as soon as possible. live in night dale, carly

a story we will, of course, continue to follow. one man is dead, another arrested after a murder on glenn road in durham. wncn's justin spoke with the suspect's sister. >> durham county sheriff's deputies responded here to the 3400 block of glenn road just after 9:00 saturday night for a possible breaking and entering. >> they found 36-year-old jose dead in his pack yard. investigators say his next door neighbor, 25-year-old efrain caballero martinez stabbed and killed him, and they were involved in a dispute. caballero martinez is in custody charged with first-degree murder and burglary. detectives also charged him with two counts of assault after they say he assaulted the victim's wife and 16 month old child. the mother and child were treated at a hospital for minor injuries. >> i can't imagine, you know, a wife going through it and seeing it, what she had to be going through that, but we do feel

keep her in our prayers. >> i spoke with a woman who says she is the suspect's sister. she did not want to show her face or give her name. >> and if he can hear me right now, i just want you to know that i still love you and that god is with you. >> she says as of sunday afternoon, she had not yet spoken with her brother. >> we're all, you know, neighbors. we're all -- we go to the same chushlg so -- church so i don't see how this could have ended up like this. i just don't understand and probably never will. >> in durham, wncn news now. the colleagues of supreme court justice antonin scalia are mourning his death today. the 79-year-old was found dead yesterday morning at a ranch in texas where he was attending the weekend gathering. >> this is the west texas ranch and resort where justice scalia

we took a brief tour inside, saw the area where he stayed. we know he got here around noon on friday, went on a blue quail hunt, and employees say it was a good hunt, that he had a good time and was looking forward to the rest of his weekend here. he stayed in the presidential suite here, which looks out over a beautiful pond on the property, went to dinner with a group of about 35 or 40, who were part of the private party, retired early, though, said he was going to bed around #k89 -- 9:00, that he was tired and wanted to get a good night sleep. the next morning, the owner of this property knocked on his door at 9:00. he dud not answer, but they thought nothing of it, went on an excursion, then about 11:00, they knocked again with no answer. they went into a side door and found the justice in his bed. this is what he had to say about that moment. >> the judge, when i found him saturday morning, was in complete repose. he was very peaceful on his -- in his -- in the bed.

with no difficulty at all in the middle of the night. >> scalia was a devoit catholic. a priest was brought in to administer last rights, and then his body transferred more than 200 miles to a funeral home in el paso. his family expected to join him there today. that is the latest from here outside of creek ranch. i'm jay gray. now, back to you. one day after scalia's death, a battle is brewing between the republican-led senate and the white house. a vacancy on the court during an election year has not happened in decades, and those who want to be the next president are weighing in on whether president obama should even try to nominate scalia's successor. nbc's jennifer johnson has our story. >> hours after justice antonin scalia's death, president obama made his intentions clear. >> i plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor. >> but senate republicans, including the two gunning for the white house, say any nominee

>> the president can nominate whoever he wants, but the senate is not going to act, and that's pretty clear. >> ted cruz is warning of dire consequences should mr. obama add another justice to the court. >> we will see unlimited abortion on demand throughout this country, partial-birth abortion, taxpayer funding, no parental notification. >> justice scalia's conservative views often influenced the balance of the court in many 5-4 decisions. >> we lost one of the greats. i'd like to have the person tailored -- republicans need to act responsibly and vote on a nominee. >> barack obama is president of the united states until january 20th, 2017. that is a fact, my friends, whether the republicans like it or not. >> apparently they believe that the constitution does not allow a democratic president to bring forth a nominee to replace justice scalia.

rights of veteran teachers by gutting job protections they've earned. groups representing law officers, other public employees, and retirees argue revoking teacher job protections promised. a lower court ruled last year that the general assembly could cut off so-called career status for newer teachers, but made a deal with veteran teachers it could not revoke. more than 20 couples got together this valentine's day for a special ceremony. 21 couples renewed their vows at the new life church in wake forest. some of those had been married just a couple of years. others more than 60. >> it is a long time, but then ut's a very, very short time, and i think the most important thing about it is determination. you have to determine from the beginning that you're going to make it, and talking about not making it, that was no option. >> good advice there. they have been married for 61 years. congratulations to them. those that went the more traditional route this

>> for chuck, it'll be hard to tell his high point on this day. an autograph on his stick from ray whitney or this beautiful goal from the red team off the fantastic feat from eric cole. a record alumni game crowd was on hand to relive the ten-year reunion of the stanley cup. they got the chance to see many of their favorite players from that team not about to miss the opportunity to come back. sfr it's been so special to bring back the memories and, you know, these guys that we went to battle with for a lot of years, there 's a special bond there, and so it's -- it's been great. >> the three-day celebration gave the former players a chance to catch up and reminisce, the stories that must've been told, the moment still fresh and vivid. >> i remember the moment right in this locker room as when they cleared everybody out, and it was just the players and us 20 something guys in here celebrating together. that -- that moment right there is where i always go back. >> and while the red team celebration at the end of their alumni game will not match the stanley cup celebration, it was
