4:30 am
of course our top story is the winter weather. in fact, several school systems have cancelled or delayed class. duke will open up at 10:00 this morning. nc state, central is delayed until noon. >> and chapel hill, durham, edgecombe, franklin, orange and wncn schools all closed today. you can find the full list running at the bottom of your screen. and we do have team coverage this morning throughout our viewing area. emma wright is in wncn. we're going to check in with all of them in just a minute but first we want to go to alyssa corfont. >> good morning to you at home. as well. we'll start off with a winter storm warning that is in effect through 9 p.m. this evening. of our entire viewing area i'm expecting the counties to see the highest snow and sleet totals as well. some of
4:31 am
snowfall across the area. now, we also have a winter weather advisory that's in effect for the remainder of our viewing area and the majority of it. this advisory is expected to go until 1 p.m. this afternoon, and the reason that's going to taper off a little earlier this afternoon is because the majority of us should be above freezing at that point in time when it will change into a cold rain and when it does i do think we're going to see more moisture then. that's the good news because we're seeing the wintry weather right now of moisture is pretty limited but you'll notice really above wncn is where we're seeing the snowfall right now. southern portion of durham and orange county is where we're seeing a band of some light snow. further south, south of wncn some sleet getting mix in there right around harnett county. we'll walk you through the forecasts as far as what we're expecting in just a little bit. but let's talk temperatures, 27 in raleigh, 25
4:32 am
and roxboro. so your forecast for today we're looking at snow he and sleet at 8 a.m., we'll be at 30 as noon, still a wintry mix changing to freezing rain at 3:00, pretty much after a cold rain. high today of 37 degrees. i'll let you know when the warmest air arrives and the totals coming up. so far things actually looking okay around the majority of the viewing area right now but we did have some snow fall overnight especially around durham parts of orange county as well but let's start things off with a look outside right now. we are seeing some snow as alyssa mentioned falling in some spots but so far 147 actually looking okay right now. you can see traffic moving smoothly there. traffic is moving fine on i-440.
4:33 am
and look at another camera, we're taking a view from i-440 and capitol boulevard. so we are going to see the potential for road problems as we head through this morning but currently no major issues to report to you around the area. light snow is being reported in some spots, and appointments north of the triangle. use some caution. we'll have more updates throughout the morning. we do have breaking news to get to. right now fire crews trying to figure out what started a house fire in raleigh. now, the flames tore through the house on fox road right around 2:30 this morning. the family did make it out safely but in the cold they had to find another place to stay. and where the weather in mind we're going to take you northeast of the triangle in orange county. >> justin quesinberry, how's it looking? >> good morning, yeah, we have
4:34 am
i'm going to show you what -- where we are right now, we're on the off ramp off of 85 in the eflin area, and you see nothing is is really sticking right now but take a look over here in the grassy area and you can see about a half an inch or more, that's what we're seeing out here in the area. most of this actually fell throw starting last night around 7:30 and lasted for about 2 or 3 hours after that. and so that's where all that accumulated but we're seeing that traffic is moving along just fine on the interstate. my photoer came into this area from raleigh this morning and said he didn't see any snow along the roads until he got to hillsboro. meanwhile i was scared at times because it's a solid sheet of ice and every little hill, hills i drive
4:35 am
drive on because it became a solid sheet of ice. so we'll show you some of the back roads coming up a little after 5:00. back to you guys. >> all right. thanks. stay safe. other team coverage continues of this round of winter weather. >> emma wright is in wncn and we wanted to know what are you seeing out there? >> well, we're seeing some sleet and some freezing rain right now, a little pellets that are hitting the windshield and just started about 2, 3, minutes ago. if you want to take a look there you can see the little drops that's not rain, that is some ice pellets you can hear it kind of tick tick tick hit the windshield. we've been checking out the roads and they look good. dot has been preparing for this winter weather really since last week, they started putting brine down on the road in preparation for the weather
4:36 am
so they were back out there this weekend putting down brine. we're told they have about about 70 trucks that are on the road that are ready to plow or salt and sand depending on what kind of weather we're seeing. as of right now the roads looking good. this freezing rain just started so we're not seeing any slick spots just yet. however if this keeps up you do want to keep it in mind when you're heading out and about this morning. >> emma, thank you. cumberland county is one of the counties to operate its white flag shelter operations. they'll be open for extended hours throughout the week. >> and remember you can keep up with weather alerts, the closings, delays, everything you need to know wherever you are with the wncn weather mobile app. it's all free. a two year old murder case in raleigh is coming to a close

kind of days make me look forward to march. >> certainly. look forward to this coming weekend because the 60s could be here by then. >> nice, we like it. >> we're talking about the potential for wintry weather, 27 degrees. this is a live picture out at the airport. we've been seeing from the crews in the field snow and emma wright who's he dealing with some sleet driving around portions of wake county and we're dealing with some moisture out on our camera at the airport, an indicate they're they're seeing some light flurries or sleet pellets falling there. i'm showing you the big picture to show this band of snow really just clipping the northeastern portions of our viewing area right now. so let's bring it into a closer look, northeastern portions of wake county and up towards the virginia border. across portions of durham
4:41 am
orange county, also looking at grandville seeing some snow this morning towards louisburg and franklin county as well. the temperatures cold enough and they've been cold enough that anything that's untreated the roadways, bridges and overpasses is going to immediately start to stick. so 25 in durham, 27 in raleigh, 28 in sand ford, also in the upper 20s in littleton and clinton while fayetteville is at 30. we'll stay in the upper 20s through about 10 a.m. and then close to 30 at noon. when we reach freezing is going to be a critical point for us because until then it's going to be a wintry mix. after that it changes into a cold rain. 35 our temperature at 4:00, 37 our high during the day. we'll get more expected snow fall and ice accumulations coming up. right now it's 4:42, glad that you're with us.

forms when the especially cold air moves over the warmer are waters. in our viewing area dot crews began preparing for today's weather days ago. they have all been on stand by. crews focus on the most traveled roads. driving about -- dropping about 1,100 gallons of brine. sand trucks will be out treating any slick spots. meanwhile people hit the local stores to stock up, anything you need to get your hands on. we visited a home depot that sold out of shovels, the store did have a good supply of salt left because they ordered an merged shipment for the storm. for many smaller stores that's not an option so they're just out of stock. so better safe than sorry. >> i don't know if you necessarily need the snow shovels in wake county but
4:48 am
you're under the winter storm warning and this now extends until 7 a.m. tomorrow morning, two to four inches of snow and sleet there. now, the rest of us under a winter weather advisory and this includes all of our counties right along the 95 corridor. this is going to continue until 7 p.m. today actually. so we'll go ahead and get you your satellite radar composite and you can see the snow showers beginning to fall across the northeastern portions of our viewing area just updating around the wake county area we're starting to see the snow fill in seeing some light snowfall. bringing you into a closer look a lot of the snow is falling north of 540 this morning. we're seeing a little bit of sleet mix in there as well. elsewhere durham county you're seeing light snowfall, so let's go ahead and get to the temperatures because that's
4:49 am
today's forecast because it's been so cold anything that's untreated the roadways, bridges, overpasses the snow going to be allowed to stick. 23 in roxboro, 25 in durham, 23 in siler city, in the upper 20s around sanford and littleton. i think they hang in the 20s for the next few hours before reaching freezing. once we hit freezing most of this changes into just a cold rain for the rest of storm. so 28 at 8 a.m., 29 at 10 a.m., 30 at noon, 32 at 2:00. we'll be in the mid-30s and the temperatures continue to climb not only today but through tonight as well. so let me walk forecast. here we are at 6 a.m., we're seeing snow north of wake county. that snow and hovering right over raleigh. then throughout the morning i think more of this changes to sleet and freezing rain. here we are at 8 a.m. a lot of us under that pink shade.
4:50 am
we head towards lunchtime freezing rain for the majority of wake county but look off to our south and east warm enough that this is falling at rain. i think we see the change-over about 2:00. heading into your evening drive home most of this is going to be a cold rain for us. those scattered showers continue overnight and some of the heaviest rain is going to come through on tuesday. we're talking one to two inches of rain possible, but with this system it's very tricky because we're going to see snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain and to talk more about that i'm going to send it over to kristin ketchell. >> good morning, everyone, we are going to see precipitation rapidly changing over from snow to kind of a wintry mix that's because we have warm air pushing in from the south. we'll see that snow gradually make the transition over to sleet and as the warm layer kind of deepens we see it transition into freezing rain and once temperatures into the surface get above freezing that's when
4:51 am
which will be the case as we continue throughout the afternoon hours today. so our best chances going to be this morning into early this afternoon. then that rain takes hold later today and as alyssa mentioned one to two inches of rain likely and for exactly how much snow, sleet and freezing rain you can expect we'll send things back over to alyssa corfont. >> so again in this white band we're looking up to an inch of snow and sleet. then you make your way to the north and west and one to three inches around orange -- or durham and orange county and portions could see over 3 inches of snow and sleet. of course i think that area will be the last to change-over from the snow and sleet that's why the totals much higher, up to a 10th of an inch ice possible around wake county and high today of 37 in raleigh, 36 in durham, 41 in fayetteville. keep in mind we don't hit the temperatures until close to your
4:52 am
for rain tomorrow, some gusty winds 59 our high and then in the 50s for the remainder of the work week and next weekend the 60s here for saturday and sunday. that's the first look at your 7-day forecast. we'll send it over to kristin with a check on the roads. well, we are going to be seeing some snow and mixed precipitation falling which may cause some issues on the roads. let's get a look outside at a few of our traffic cameras. we are seeing traffic mainly around the triangle still moving smoothly. we are starting to see some snow impacting the triangle though so any roads could be an issue. one more camera outside of -- actually not going to show a camera going to show a traffic map right. things okay around the region currently but the live road conditions you will notice that we've got some snow being reported in some spots and again, any roads that were not treated over the past several days the snow is going to stick because temperatures and have been below freezing for quite some time.
