have been riding around taking a look at conditions. how they right now? >> things starting to look slick. we're seeing some sleet and freezing rain. it seems to be changing on and off here a little bit of snow on the roads along u.s. 1 right now headed from raleigh to wake forest. wake forest seems to have more of the snow. you take a look at the road it's kind of hard to see in the dark, but there is definitely some white stuff on it. it's a little slick in places. we've seen a lot of dot trucks out here putting down some salt and sand and brine and it seems to be helping because you can see the difference where they have put it down and where they haven't. it's much cleaner in the areas that they have treated so far. the roads it's hard to tell how slick they are really at this point because there seems to be a little bit of just rain that comes down and melts things for a little bit but then you'll drive a little bit further and things will be frozen again.
5:36 am
headed out this morning to work, i know a lot of schools cancelled but if you do have to go out you want to keep that in mind. there are some slick spots particularly up towards wake forest, that's where we're seeing most of the freezing happening on the roads right now. but again, dot, they have been out trying to keep the roads safe, but you want to do them a favor if you see those trucks you want to give them a lot of room so that they can do their jobs and then, of course you want to put a good amount of distance between yourself and the other cars on the roads that you don't have any accidents. we're going to continue to monitor these road conditions of course and we will bring you more updates later on in the show. i'm emma wright, back to you. >> folks going to need those great tips this morning. and cumberland county is among the county to say operate its white flag emergency shelter operations. various shelters will be open for extended hours now until the middle of the week as freezing temperatures sweep through the area once again. >> and remember you can keep up

5:46 am
right now investigators don't know what started that fire. and check this out, see steam and not smoke. it's so cold that the fog forms when this cold air moves over the relatively warmer waters pretty. around our viewing area dot crews began preparing for 50 trucks and 20 contractor trucks will been on stand by all night. wake county had about # thousand lane miles of roads so crews focused on the most traveled roads dropping about 1,100,000 gallons of brine. they'll be out if there's an inch or more. meanwhile people hit local stores to stock up on salt, snow food. we visited a home depot that sold out of snow shovels, the store did have a good supply of salt left because they just before the storm.
5:47 am
smaller stores that's not really an option so they're just out of stock unfortunately. so, yeah, we're probably going to need this as this weather conditions. yes, you're going to need the shovels in you're north and west of the triangle, person county, orange county i'm talking to you guys as you're under this winter storm warning through 7 a.m. on tuesday. dangerous travel conditions expected during that time. now, the rest of us under a winter weather advisory. it's kind of broken up into two parts around the 95 corridor and the sand hills that advisory will expire at 1 p.m. it for raleigh, durham, siler city and border. let's get to what is falling right now though here's your satellite radar composite and you can see it extends back to our west but falling in our immediate viewing area we're looking at more sleet than snow around the triangle. a lot of it spreading across durham
5:48 am
then look at the northeastern portions of wake county, wake forest out towards wendell seeing that sleet, very little snow. more sleet as we check in down around the sand hills. the change-over happening just a little earlier than when initially expected around the triangle. you're seeing some of light sleet fall. so here's your temperatures, 25 in raleigh, 28 in clayton, upper 20s around littleton and fayetteville. so as you're planning your day temperatures staying in the upper 20s by 8 a.m.. we're at 30 by lunchtime. it's still cold and anything falling is is going to freeze on impact. mix change to go rain this afternoon 37 degrees our afternoon high and that is actually going to happen right around the evening drive home. so walking you through your future forecast snow and sleet out there at 7 a.m. this morning, more sleet around the triangle through 8, 9 o'clock, this continues to change-over as we head towards lunchtime.
5:49 am
freezing rain for wake county, the good news is the moisture there's just not a lot of it yet. key words yet, more of it rushes in tonight and tomorrow but temperatures will be above freezing expecting us to be above freezing at 3 p.m. continue to see the temperatures warm for the evening drive home, as we head into tuesday rain likely for the morning commute it will be a soggy one. for more on the types of precipitation we're going to see i'll send it over to kristin. good morning. >> good morning we're seeing a lot of snow mixed with some sleet right now and that's causing some major issues on some area roads. the we have some warm air are that's causing our snowflakes to melt and refreeze as the ice pellets you can hear them hitting your windshield, that makes it very danger are you saying on some area roads also some freezing rain that we'll eventually be seeing. so we're seeing very
5:50 am
around the area attachment will be the case through this morning and into this afternoon before we finally see temperatures warming up and changing over to plain rain which may be an issue for us as well as tonight and tonight. for exactly how much you can expect let's turn things back over. >> thanks. and because we're going to see all the different types of precipitation the totals very tricky with this system. up you to an inch possible of sleet and snow around wake county, these areas shade in white that includes lee, portions of moore county, one to three around durham, orange counties and those countying bordering. and then portions of person county could receive over 3 inches. keep in mind in roxboro last night had almost 2 inches of snow on the ground. also a threat for us today up to 1, 10th of an inch of ice for all these areas shaded in pink, just a trace as we are expecting the change-over to a cold rain a little earlier along the sand hills.
5:51 am
in raleigh, 36 in durham, 41 in fayetteville, tonight rain continues warming temperatures though, 37 an overnight low and as we head into the coming days you'll see 59 tomorrow, rain here for the morning, dryer by the afternoon, and then dry for the rest of the work week and let's just talk about something to get us through the week 60s possible over the weekend ahead. things really starting heat up in the traffic department. what's going on? it is an absolute mess outside. we've had several reports come into our news room, one says north raleigh is a solid sheet of ice right now. annoyed and around annoyed an mess it's an ice ring on 264, there's another one on 64 and eastbound at the i-440, also u.s. 64 and 264 westbound
