5:30 am
the systems that you see on your screen on a two hour delay. >> it includes durham, roanoke rapids, you can find a full list at the bottom of your screen, also online at wncn.com. and we also have team coverage for you this morning throughout our viewing area of the severe weather. wncn's emma wright checking out conditions on the roadways. first we're going to check in with kristin ketchell who's got a look at the forecast. >> a whole lot going on. this morning we've got rain and we also have some pretty strong winds out there as well. let's take a look at our wncn tower camera you can see water here. we've had some heavy downpours and the radar is lit up with that this morning, the deep colors indicating some that have heavy rain along a cold front which it's not going to do much for us temperature wise but it is going to bring us again some of the heavier showers
5:31 am
a little bit of a break from the rain right now but some of the heaviest stuff is sitting back to the west and that will be pushing into the area in the next 30 minutes or so. so you see this line here extending all the way down to fayetteville this is the heaviest rain that we'll actually see all morning and once that line pushes through the area we're going to see conditions rapidly improving but expect some heavy downpour around durham and chapel hill, and roxboro too. so this is all once again part of a cold front which is continuing to push in from the west. once the rain is out of here, we'll actually dry out briefly as we head through tonight. temperatures right now really warm to start the day 59 degrees in raleigh, 57 in durham, it's 61 degrees outside in fayetteville. yesterday all of these temperatures were in the 20s. so we are much warmer than that this morning but we are dealing with some gusty wind too. we had a gust of 39 miles per hour in raleigh, 36 miles per hour in fayetteville.
5:32 am
of the gusts got close to 40 this morning. so expect some heavy rain this morning, temperatures right around 58, or 59 degrees at 8 a.m. drying out by lunchtime. 60 degrees increasing sunshine this afternoon, 61 our high temperature today before those temperatures fall tonight and we've got a chance of seeing at least one more stray shower moving in but much dryer weather in the forecast. i'll have all those details coming up in just a few minutes. let's get a check on that morning drive because we are currently seeing a lot of water collecting on the lens here on our cameras, i-85 and u.s. 70 you can see traffic moving okay this morning. so there's the good news but you may run into some spots this morning where the water is starting to collect on the roads. one more camera, this is edwards mill road all is quiet this morning. so that's always good on a morning after we dealt with some pretty icy and messy weather yesterday. and let's take a look at our
5:33 am
really just one incident here and that's south of raleigh on so you may run into some delays there but other than that things actually looking okay, but of course, current road conditions showing a little bit of ponding starting on some of those area at least we're not dealing with the ice this morning but the rain will be heavy at times and that will be reducing your visibility. we'll have more updates coming up in just a few minutes. >> thanks so much. our team coverage continues. >> emma wright is driving around our viewing area. she's not driving, she's riding around with driver kenneth roundtree this morning checking out conditions. how things out there? >> kristin said the good news is it's not snowing and sleeting but the bad news it is raining and making for some tricky travel conditions if you're not careful.
5:34 am
we've been driving around for about an hour, and about a half hour ago it was really coming down just pouring buckets. we were on the belt line and made for some low visibility especially with some fog thrown in there it made for tricky conditions. here downtown the rain has eased up a bit and it's not too bad. however we are seeing some ponding on the roads. it sneaks up on you. it looks like not too much and then you hit it and you can slip and slide just a little bit if you're fought going at a reasonable rate of speed. i do want to point out that there are a lot of cars on the side of the road from yesterday's storms. there were some cars parked on the shoulder and in the median some disabled vehicles that you want to keep an eye out for especially if we see any fog roll in this morning. that makes it hard to see and you don't want to clip any cars on the side of the road. we're going to continue
5:35 am
this morning and bring you more updates later on in the show. >> glad you're not slipping and sliding like a lot of drivers were doing yesterday. even though the winter weather is out of the viewing area the impact on flights could still be felt today. >> that's right more than 70 flights were cancelled yesterday, dozens more were delayed. this system is affecting millions of people up and down the east coast right now. be sure to check your flight status and arrive earlier than normal. you can do that on our website wncn.com we've got a great flight tracker there. drivers in cumberland also dealt with travel issues on the roads. highway patrol says the calls started coming in around 5:30 yesterday morning. at least 50 calls came in throughout the morning. troopers say speed and drivers losing control because of all the black ice were the main problems. so just really treacherous yesterday. despite a massive three story apartment fire in fayetteville, a 911 call that someone was trapped inside,
5:36 am
crews responded around 9:30 last night. investigators believe the fired started on a balcony and spread up to an attic. late last night durham city leaders stopped a vote that would have allowed the police department to purchase body cameras. several counsel is sill members voiced concerns because of a draft policy to keep the videos secret. at least two members told wncn they were ready to vote no. several have access. >> able to see what's going on if they don't have anything to hide. >> the council will revisit body cameras next month. durham mayor bill bell also delivered the annual state of the city address but this address was a little different as the mayor held a question and answer style delivery of his speech. the mayor touted the city's progress including new hotels downtown, creating jobs, and renovations to city hall. >> durham is in good hands, it's
5:37 am
a very capable council, because you've got a very capable administration, because you've got a very capable set of employees, over 2,400 that are working day and night to say good things happening in durham and continue to make that happen. >> he also address add recent crime trend but he is stresseded things improving. it was a win for food truck owners after weeks of debate about proposed restrictions. the planning commission landed on a proposal it hopes satisfies everyone's needs. >> just like the restaurants have chosen to open in the town i have chosen to do business in this town also. >> all right the much less restricted proposal now goes to the town board of commissioners for approval at their next meeting.
5:38 am
all that straightened out. you know, we just got news, vanity passed away. this song do you remember that? >> we were geeking out a little bit. today crews will survey damage in florida after ors hit. still to come an amazing story of survival that came out of all that devastation. plus the biggest names strutted their stuff last night

5:41 am
take a look from our tower camera right now looking out over the belt line and you can see some water on the lens and that's going to be impacting some traffic because we're seeing some heavier showers working their way through the area right now. some pretty powerful downpour. some of those reds in parts of durham county extreme southwest wade county as well this is all part of a cold front that is moving through this morning. eventually we are going to see the wet weather coming to an end but for now don't be surprised if you hear maybe a little bit of thunder embedded with the downpours as well. makes its way toward littleton and also pushing through fayetteville seeing really heavy rain right along 301 and 401. so please use some caution if you are morning. the water is starting to pond and collect on some of the roads already but the good news as i mentioned is the heaviest rain going to push through early.
5:42 am
out as we head into this afternoon and temperatures warm. it's 59 degrees in raleigh and fayetteville. 57 is our current temperature in durham, gusty winds gusting to about 25 miles per hour in raleigh, a 48-mile per hour gust as it moved through fayetteville. so keep that in mind. 59 degrees at 8 a.m. we're drying out with 60 degrees at lunchtime and cool off a little bit tonight. we're looking dry for the rest of this week. i'll have your complete forecast coming up in just a few minutes. >> thanks so much. right now it's 5:42. here's what's coming up. >> and the grammy goes to. >> the music industry's biggest

stories as we continue to track severe weather headed our way some people dealing with the impact of winter weather had on us yesterday. >> yeah, it was crazy out there. dozens of flights were cancelled or delayed yesterday. so make sure you check your flight status before you head to the airport today. meanwhile activist cliven bundy is depicted appear in court today. he'll answered answer to the charges brought against him. and happening next month the durham city council will revisit a proposal that will quip police officers with body cameras. last night leaders stopped the vote of several members voiced concerns because of a draft secret. closing arguments will start today for the man accused of murdering huggins-jones. the

federal judges ruled this has some heavy rain and very strong winds with it. it's pushing very quickly to the east so it moves in and out very quickly but we are going to see it leave some heavy rain and also some pretty gusty winds in its wake here. so as it moves through keep in mind that visibility is going to be reduced. roxboro, durham, chapel hill right now pushing into raleigh going to see some
5:49 am
arriving in the next ten or 15 minutes here. the heaviest rain just moved to the east of fayetteville but it is currently impacting littleton and fuquay varina. so if you are running your way into work this morning you may want to leave yourself a few extra minutes traffic could be impacted. so our satellite and radar showing that heavy rain pushing in. this is all in association with a cold front and it's continuing to work its way out of the area. so once we get through the heavy rain this morning, we actually dry out this afternoon. so we will see the forecast improving over the next 12 hours and even as we head through this week ahead we're looking at temperatures staying pretty warm and sunshine finally making a come back. it's 59 degrees outside in raleigh already a huge change from yesterday when we were dealing with ice and snow in the morning, temperatures at this time yesterday were in the 20s, we're in the 50s right now. so 30 degrees warmer than we actually were yesterday.
5:50 am
durham, that's 56 degrees in fayetteville and we saw the camera shaking at the beginning of the weather cast here, and that's because we do have winds gusting above 20 miles per hour in some spots. we just had a 25-mile per hour gust in raleigh, a 32-mile per hour gust in dunn, and as that heavy rain actually moved in we had a 4-mile per hour wind gust reported in fayetteville. temperatures going to hold steady through much of the morning maybe rising a couple of degrees up to 611 by about 2 p.m. falling to 56 degrees by 6. we've got a marginal risk for severe storms mostly to the east of our area today but that does include the southern tip of sam son county so we'll watch for damaging winds as the heavy rain moves in and the heaviest rain is going to push into the area this morning here. so please be careful out there. those heavy downpour some thunder likely especially over the next couple of hours before
5:51 am
completely we dry out as we head through this evening. again the forecast looking much better here over the next several days. we'll hit a high of 61 in raleigh today, 60 in durham, 64 degrees in fayetteville. tonight an isolated shower likely, otherwise partly cloudy skies, 38 degrees will be our low temperature so we're above freezing tonight. we don't have to worry about any of the water on the road refreezing. up to 56 degrees tomorrow, 52 on thursday, a lot of sunshine in the forecast thursday, friday, saturday and sunday. 56 on saturday, 64 on sunday, that is going to be such a welcomed change compared to some of the messy weather that we've dealt with here over the past several days. so hang in there you'll need the umbrella but things looking much much better through the end of this week and into the weekend too. we are seeing a few areas of
