warning in effect for southern portions of cumberland county until 11:45. just getting some new information in from the national weather service t looks like some of the latest radar trends so that some of the low level portions of storm have weakened. this could just be part of of the cycling process which is what we kind of typically can see with these kind of storms. they can kind of go through cycles. they turn weaker and then we start to see them start to strengthen again. this what is we'll be monitoring as we head throughout the course of the morning and as we head through outthe course of the day. this tornado warning continues until 11:45. this storm capable of producing a tornado and it is in southern portions of company baer -- cumberland county. it is a very dangerous storm locationed about 14 miles south of fayetteville. if you are in southern portions of cumberland county, please take this storm seriously.

11:08 am
we'll continue to watch it for you. let me go ahead and put our storm relative velocity on there. that is the measure of the winds heading in two different directions here this morning. we'll continue to watch this very closely and looking still at some rotations, we are seeing greens an we are seeing redss right next to each other and that is an indicator that winds are traveling in two different directions and that is an indicator that we could have a tornado on the ground. right now, this is still a doppler indicated storm in southern portions of cumberland county. we'll continue to watch this as we head throughout the day. for more on our continuous coverage of this tornado warning, i will send it on over to kristin ketchell. what do you have? >> reporter: outside right now, we are continuing to monitor the situation very closely here. you can see the yellow spinning here. the storm just south of fayetteville is actually rotating a little bit. this storm may be recycling right now.
11:09 am
now. this is still a doppler indicated tornado just south of grays creek, about 14 miles south of fayetteville right now inform we turn on our velocity data here, what this is showing is the winds moving away and toward the radar at this point. so you can tell you have the together. that is actually your best rotation here. where we have the chance of seeing the best rotation and where that tornado would actually be would be really right on the fayette -- excuse me, on the cumberland county line just south of fayetteville here. that is where you can see the reds and greens very close together. that is what we are watching. the storm has weakened slightly. still, the tornado warning continues until 11:45 this morning. we are continuing to monitor the situation very, very closely here. let's turn the radar back on here and we are going to just
11:10 am
rain that we are seeing here as well. so if we are seeing a tornado in this area, it will be very difficult to see. it will be rain wrapped so do not attempt to try and look for t take our word right now. now is the time, if you live in one. these high heighted areas within the polygon, if you are in this red area here outlined by the polygon, you need to found your safe spot the. the most interior room of your house. if you have kids home, good idea to be a bike helmet. you want to be in a basement or very, very interior room of your home. that is the safette place for you to be at this point until this storm actually passes and the threat is clear. it is better to be safe than sorry. we do not official hi have confirmation that there is a tornado on the ground. conditions are ripe so that is
11:11 am
been issued for portions of cumberland county. right along 87 is where we are seeing the heavy rain and the rotation. the storm is recycling at this point meaning we may not have a very strong sunday. it might not be as strong as it once was but storms go through the cycling phase where they are strong, they weaken for i few minutes and they recycle and get stronger again. so that is what is currently happening in southeastern cumberland county. so hoke mills not included. neither is fayetteville. st. paul is actually in the clear right now. let's zoom things out and we'll take a look and see the bigger picture here. the areas that are included, this red polygon is what we are looking at. a line right along 95 and 53 included in that line going through autryville and south of the cumberland county line here. our main area of concern here is that polygon mainly east and
11:12 am
if we turn on the velocity data, this is showing the wind toward and away from the radar. where we have the greens and reds close together and those really bright colors is where we do have the best potential for seeing a tornado on the ground. so if there is a tornado on the ground currently, it is going to be in the location where we do have these really bright red colors and really bright green colors next to each other. that is southeast of gray's creek heading to the northeast. 53 likely going to be impacted in the next 10 to 15 minutes. as the storm continues to push its way off to the northeast, if you are in stedman and you are watching us on tv, now is the time to get in your safe place. an interior room of your house. if you have a basement, that is the best place as well. you want to wait out the storm. the storm warn continues, tornado warning, until about 11:45 a.m. we are keeping a close eye. we are monitoring the situation here and as soon as we have additional updates, we'll send them your way.
11:13 am

creek, stedman. this storm continues to be a tornado indicated storm. we'll take you in real quick for this and show you what we are dealing with as far as the storm relative velocity. kristin was talking about this a lot. we're looking for the bright greens and reds close together. so i'll take you into a closer look at this and show you what we're looking at. you can still see clear as day that we are seeing red and green next to each other. this would be approaching highway 53 right now again moving closer to the stedman area. the storm moving north and east at about 50 miles per hour. so right now, you am going to send this on over to stefan chase way little bit more. >> thank you so much. doing a great job this morning covering the situation. no longer a threat and now a real live situation. >> absolutely. take heed. do all those things that they said in order to stay safe. get to an interior part of the home.
11:15 am
do not go under an overpass. don't get into a ditch as well. >> certainly good points as well. welcome to you to our wncn news crew. as meteorologist alyssa corfont and kristin ketchell tell us more about the warnings and what they mean for our area, we also want to know more about what the conditions look like. we do have a wncn news crew in cumberland county. nate rogers joins us now by phone. are you there? >> reporter: i'm here, guys. >> here in wake county, we can certainly hear the rain pounding down. what are you seeing now that there is a tornado warning in your area affecting the e behen talking a lot about gray's creek, stedman being mingo. tell us where you are and what the conditions look like for you. >> reporter: so i'm in downtown fayetteville literally by our bureau here on hay street and it is really in spurts.
11:16 am
rain has been coming down nonstop, very heavy. the street literally puddled in water. folks have been driving very, very slow on the roads. you can see a lot of traffic building up because folks are driving about 20 miles per hour with their high beam and hazard lights on just to make sure that no accidents occur. now, i would say within last two minutes, it is coming down a little bit but not as hard as we've seen for like the last hour. visibility has been pretty low but now the skies are lightening up just a bit i just reached out to the police department to see if they've had any reports of accidents and they say none yet. i've reached out to the cumberland county highway patrol and they say they are getting some reports but they are still waiting for the totals to come in.
11:17 am
are still in monitoring mode. cumberland county schools will be letting out early today along with ft. bragg schools. they are having an early release also. so you all are absolutely right. for those that don't have to be on the roads, don't come out. it can be to a certain degree frightening. as we're driving here, it is coming down hard but than it will stop and the light goes from very dark to light a little bit. it is a weird situation. >> for sure, whenever you hear that you tornado warning is affecting an area, it is definitely scary. i'm following you on twitter. he is sending out a lot of great tweets. and cumberland county schools are letting out early. thank you for letting us know more about that.
11:18 am
we know folks tend to sometimes drive in that standing water which can be incredibly dangerous. anyiers that you've heard of that people really should avoid if they are out at all? >> reporter: not yet. i just passed one of the overpasses. there are some puddles but nothing significant as of this time. the rain is coming down but it is a lot lighter than what of a seen over the last hour. literally just five minutes ago, right before -- like during the top of the newscast, it was coming down so hard, you could hear -- you all would have been able to hear the raindrops on the top of our vehicle. it is lightening up a little bit but still a lot of folk out here with umbrellas. everybody is wet. the somewhat of a scary situation. so everybody is trying to be as safe as possible, get out of the roads. i passed a gas station and there were some people would were literally i guess may have walked to the gas station or
11:19 am
inside until the rain died down a bit. you couldn't even really see the sidewalk or the street. so now, as it is becoming lighter outside, folk are trying to make their way to their destination. >> i no he it may be kind of hard to see where you are, but in terms of power, folks really worry about that a lot. you see any power outages or flickering of lights at all? >> no power outages just yet. emergency management, when i spoke to them, they shouldn't had any reports or any significant reports of power outages just yet but all of that could change within the next hour or so or even 30 minutes. we'll keep you up to date with power outages, with road conditions be school closures, all of those things. i think the biggest thing is to stay inside, get in a secure location. if you don't have to be out especially driving like my photographer, joey and i, we are trying to take our time
11:20 am
like 10 or 20 miles per hour. oftentimes, what we're noticing here is that cars are kind of sliding even though we are going so slow. but the water has been accumulating to a certain degree. you got to be really careful out here. >> all right. so rain certainly impact the drive down there in cumberland county. nate rogers reporting live by phone. thank you so much for detailing what is happening there. >> let's get straight back to alyssa with the latest on that tornado warning. >> thank you, guys. again, good morning to you. thank you, nate, reporting down from the cumberland county area. we do have a tornado watch. we have been talking about a tornado warning. this sunday watch is now for the entire viewing area until 7:00 p.m. this evening. this includes the triangle, raleigh, durham area. it includes fayetteville, towards the virginia border. this tornado watch is going to be critical to monitor as we
11:21 am
let's get back to the tornado warn storm. this warning will be in effect until 11:45. this storm is racing across south and central porks of cumberland county -- portions of cumberland county. pretty much, the storm is over top of stedman. you need to be taking cover at this point in time. you. tornado warning in effect until 11:45 for cumberland county. these cities include stedman and vander this morning. we were hearing nate talk about the a rainfall. we are looking at 1.5 inches of rain per hour. let's get this information off the screen so we can go ahead and take you into a closer look at this storm. this storm now moving across south and central portions of cumberland county. you look at that. you see where you are seeing that rotating indicator and that is a sign that we are

11:24 am
we are looking at spivey's corner at 11:46. newton grove at 11:55 if the storm would hold together. here is good news for you. we are just getting in from the national weather service that this sunday warning has been allowed to expire at this point in time. so it is showing signs that it has weakened at this point in time. we'll continue to monitor the weather conditions as we head throughout the rest of the morning. right now, i'll send it over to kristin ketchell. >> so great news. the tornado warning has expired at least at this point. the threat for cumberland county as far as tornadoes go is over. we are still watching this storm system here because it does have the potential to produce more severe storms and more tornadoes throughout the day. at this point, again, that tornado warning for cumberland county has been allow to expire. we are still watching the potential for stronger storms to develops with a head through the afternoon. this is a good time to remind you of good and bad places to go.

11:26 am
so once again, the tornado threat still kind of in the moderate range across the area today. the biggest threat will be the potential for some high winds and just one note here. the damaging straight line winds have the potential to be stronger and cause more damage than an actual tornado. so that is also what we are watching as we head into this afternoon. so keep in mind that the day is not over yet. we've still got a lot going on around the area as far assy veer weather goes. we still have the temperatures in the 60s and 70s and that is adding fuel to the storm ps. we'll go back to alyssa corfont. >> we are going to go ahead and watch this as we head throughout the day this. tornado watch is in effect until 7:00 p.m. this evening. so the day far from over. this is just getting started. we are still watching the potential for a line of storms to develop later this afternoon. this tornado watch set to
