storms that hit our area did not seriously hurt anyone. >> good morning and thanks so morning. welcome back home. >> well, it's great to be here. >> and great to have you on wncn. we've got your morning a very busy morning yesterday. yeah, it certainly was a busy morning. thankfully we are expecting some calmer conditions today but not until the afternoon. we have a wind advisory. it will be in effect until 2 p.m. this afternoon, and just like yesterday it's in effect for the entire viewing area, gusts could be as strong as 45 miles per hour. now, for the most of us we're seeing gusts in the 20 to 30-mile an hour range. 23 miles per hour in clinton and smith field and raleigh our latest gusts as

thing to pass along to you no rain in our vicinity, no storms. all of that has now moved out. i really don't have rain chances in the forecast until middle of next week. so go ahead and enjoy this dry weather. here's your fast forecast. partly cloudy this morning. we'll be at 45 at 8 a.m., 53 at lunchtime today where gusts could be near 45 miles per hour. overall the afternoon hours close to where we should be for this time of year, 56 our high, then we're back to 51 by 6 p.m. this evening. it will be cooler and calmer by that point in time. we'll get to more and the weekend ahead in a moment but let's go ahead and checking in with traffic on this thursday morning. a quiet start to the day, i-440 just a few cars in either direction, no fog, no rain out there this morning either but we do have one early morning accident in johnston county, red house road there's an incident

watch out for that area. it looks like it's minor secondary streets but again nonetheless if you're heading in that direction be alert. . right now crews throughout our state working to restore power to thousands of people. here the latest numbers in wncn more than 350 people without power this orange in orange county it's more than 550 people and in granville more than 230 also without power. no word yet when crews will have everything back up and running. right now a day of cleaning up will greet many people in our viewing area. >> the storm system brought heavy rain, strong winds and even possible tornadoes, one of the hardest hit areas was oxford. >> reporter: it's hard to imagine the kind of force that this possible tornado had, the granville county sheriffs office

homes that was ripped apart. two other farms also damaged, and this was the wills yams family room. this is what the possible tornado looked like as it touched down in granville county. 911 calls indicating it moved from west to east. >> over here, and of course, a roof. >> but those strong winds tore the williams home apart. it picked up his car along with the roof. all of it ended up tossed across his backyard. fortunately he was out buying treats for his five dogs at the time and he says that trip likely saved his life. >> when i realized and saw the house without a roof on it. >> he then began to search the debris and found his five dogs all okay. then there was dudley barns.

>> he told me his 81-year old mother was at home when the possible tornado came through. his wife and sister were able to alert her. >> she was on this end of the house and not the other end because that's where it came that way. >> while there's a lot of damage here, a lot of homes destroyed people keeping their eye on the bigger picture and grateful that no one was killed or injured in this. the granville county sheriff believes a possible tornado moved west. a home up for more than 100 years suffered significant damages these some of the peoples. a woman says her family has owned the home for more than a century. it holds a whole lot of sent mental value. she told us what it was like when the storm came through.

see the tin flying in circles, and insulation from other homes. >> and also grateful because known of the family was injured last night. well the storm made quite an impact as it came through wayne county as well. the strong winds ripped off the roof of a mobile home. four people were home at the time. luckily no one was injured in those winds. it all caused damage to other homes and brought down trees and power lines. >> and i physically watched the roof rip off the trailer home across the street come flying into my fence, and hanging dangling in the power line. at that point i took cover. >> the red cross is helping the familyment the storm knocked out power for most homes in the area. well, the duke basketball team tweeted out this photo when the storm moved over durham. >> they along with duke employees took cover. this is

few of them with smiles on their faces. more images from durham, right now we're taking a look at the the campus. this was tweeted just as soon as the storm passed around 5 yesterday evening. fortunately no reports of injuries and those students camping out for the nc came were able to take cover. in chapel hill sirens sounded, and students took cover in the basement. during any weather event you can always send us your photos. we would love to see them. when it's safe take them only then through social media or email it and send it at wncn.com. fortunately there are no serious injuries reported from this system in north carolina. >> but in virginia at least three people dead after a tornado hit there.

not as exhausted as people who stayed up last night waiting what the storm would do. >> we really feel for those people who lost the roofs on their homes and all that damage. so certainly a day of clean up for them today and they'll have great weather to do so because we're going to see some sunshine today. 44 degrees. this is a live picture from our tower camera looking leaps and bounds better than where we were yesterday at this time. i'm showing you the big picture this morning because you'll notice, well, there's not a lot to talk about this morning. we have some snow wrapping around the back end of this system across ohio, but the bulk of it moving up towards the new england area. portion of pennsylvania this morning seeing some rain. again known of this expected in our area. we'll keep talking about these quiet conditions for the majority of today. so let's see where the temperatures right now

we promise it is a in this morning's top stories the national weather service will be very busy today determining if tornados touched down in our viewing area. from orange county to sam son county much of our viewing area was under watches or warnings as heavy rain and gusting winds ripped through the area. well, three people died in virginia when a suspected tornado there tore through the town of waverly it was part of the same system that moved up the east coast. a view from louisiana shows a glimpse of how much damage was done there. and the count down has gun and preparations underway for

academy awards expected to take place tonight. the red carpet was rolled out yesterday for the event. a lot of people exceeds about that. >> yeah, it's going to be a big party. right now a man in kentucky is recovering after a battery blew up in his pocket. keep an eye on the video on the guy to the right of your screen. he says an e cigarette battery exploded in his pocket. the clerk says he couldn't quite figure out what happened. >> i was what was of that, you have a bomb in your pocket? i was like that, you carry bomb in your pocket? i was shocked and hands over hi head. >> yeah, that would be a little startling there. now, people came to his rescue. the man says he has second degree burns on his leg but is able to walk. dangerous. earlier this month a couple

happened to them involved an e cigarette. investigators say say the devices rechargeable battery exploded inside of thatten man's pocket and he was treated for second and third degree burns. investigators believe the battery caught fire after coming into contact with loose change in the man's pocket. breaking news overnight fayetteville investigators trying to figure out what started a house fire. crews responded to a home around 10:15 last night. they found smoke from the second story and believe it started in the kitchen and spread up the wall. luckily no one was home when that fire started. an autopsy is providing new details by the deaths of a mother and son in their home and that we want to warn you some people may find the information a bit disturbing. a fire was intentionally started and

that her three-year old son was found with plastic zip ties on his neck and she was found with melted plastic pieces around her neck and ruled it a suicide. a gas can was found outside the master bedroom, a second child survived the fire and was taken to unc hospitals. new this morning a line of strong storms caused flooding in the washington, d.c. area. the rain comes pounding down and left thousands of people without power. a parking garage there flooded with the reaching the curb. all three of the region's major airports all reported delays. >> do we needed to get out of the automobile? we unsafe? what? >> can you imagine the wncn mobile news tracker was front and center in the storm. >> wncn steve sbraccia was on the air when he was told to seek shelter immediately. you've got

outside. you may be still hearing the winds howl but much much calmer considering all the tornado warnings that we did track across the area yesterday. that system doesn't look like much now it's moving up towards the new england area. you can see rain across pennsylvania, some steadier rain up across new england and the back end of the storm some cold air rushing in and that's bringing lake effect snow as far as south as west virginia this morning. now, known of that expected around our area. here we're expecting partly cloudy skies and breezy conditions. good news because i know some of you are watching and have a day of clean up ahead of you. 23 our latest wind gust in raleigh. fayetteville 31 miles an hour. gusts in the teens around sanford and pinehurst and raeford this morning starting off our day with a gust right around 22 miles per hour. so no

has been extended until 2:00 can this afternoon that was just updated from the national weather service this morning. gusts up to 45 miles per hour going to be possible. again we saw a lot of rain yesterday if you didn't see that severe weather roll through so again with these gusts we could start to see some more trees topple as well. 47 at 8 a.m., 50 at 10 a.m., 53 at noon today, 56 our afternoon high. now, normal for this time of year around 57. so we're not going to be far from that mark. we'll be back to 51 by 6 p.m. this evening. your forecast for today and i think a lot of you are going to enjoy this. it's beenen a fairly cloudy week not to mention the severe weather yesterday. sunshine at lunchtime. some clouds from time to time but again a dry day expected through 6 p.m. overnight tonight partly cloudy and that's how we'll end our work week on our friday, a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day but overall tomorrow should be calmer.
