>> all the severe weather that we did have. we're going to get you over to meteorologist alyssa corfont who's got a look at today's forecast. >> good morning guys, and good morning to you at home as well. today will certainly be a quieter day for us. we can take a big sigh of relieve there but the wind advisory will continue today right on through 2:00 this afternoon. now, wind gusts during this time frame could top out near 45 miles per hour so a check on where they are right now and i'm looking for the strongest one and it looks around rocky mount at 29 miles per hour, 25 miles per hour in goldsboro, here in raleigh we're in the upper teens, 21 in roxboro, 20 miles per hour in the sanford area. so here's a look locally at what's going on and the good news is not a lot. we have a few clouds today. so if you're getting ready to head out the door go ahead and check that out it's nice to see a

behind me. it brought heavy rain, winds and possible be tornados, and one of the hardest hit areas was in oxford in granville county. there? devastation. we are waiting for the national weather service to come out here later this morning and tell us if a tornado actually touched down here, but it -- it looks like a very power storm came through here. you can see the tops of the trees totally ripped off. if you move along the road the damage gets worse until you get to this house right here the roof completely gone. we're told the man inside was a little hard of hearing. he says he went out yesterday afternoon took a trip to wal-mart and says that trip saved his life. he says when he came back home he saw the roof of his house was gone all of his

people in this area say they're grateful despite all of the damage they're grateful that there weren't any serious injuries and no one was killed. as for the national weather service they're expected to be here at 9:30 this morning to confirm if all of this damage is indeed from a tornado. we will be there of course and bring you more updates and coming up we're going to hear from some people who live on this road. they're going to talk to us about the clean up process involved. obviously very extensive and it will take a while. for now reporting live in granville county, i'm emma wright wncn news. >> thank you, emma. looking forward to hearing from them. our crews need to be careful as well. >> yeah, what we saw yesterday. early in the afternoon storms in durham county as well. >> trees and no power. residents spent much the night without power as crews worked to clear the trees first. thankfully no injuries reported in that area following the storm. now, we also had crews covering the storm in moore

we found damage but as you see it wasn't as extensive a big tree uprooted and fell onto a truck and trailer there. it also snapped a power line. thankfully no one was hurt but crews worked for several hours to repair all the damage there. now, to cumbrland county. crews worked to get things back to normal. at a damage dealership a canopy hit power lines. and thankfully nobody was hurt. this just into our news room we just bound out that two schools in wayne county will operate on a through history delay today. the list includes spring creek middle and high schools, the reason the power outage caused by yesterday's storms. yesterday the weather hit much of our viewing area during the middle of the school day and prompted districts throughout

>> also public schools in 40 of our 100 counties decided to dismiss students early. >> and a tornado warning in moore county delayed kids from leaving there as well instead they took shelter in the hallway you can see everyone reading to pass the time. >> schools in cumberland county activated their emergency plan. >> and here they dismissed three hours early, busses hit the roads early. and this was the scene in raleigh as parents picked up their kids. parents said it was a smart plan. >> i was concerned for their safety because we've had tornados come through here before and i'm glad that i have the opportunity to get her early. >> it was a similar scene in durham where several businesses and schools were shut down early there.

to dismiss two hours early and and it was increased to 3 hours. fort bragg schools also released students around noon yesterday. about 15 minutes prior to the release a tornado warning was issued. and we called school officials who told us that at that point it was too late to alter the early dismissal plan. throughout the day and night power crews worked to restore power to the hardest hit areas, one of the spots wake county. workers had the lights back on in a couple of hours. they worked hard to make that happen. coming up here's another reason to be careful on the roadways as we take a look at just how much drivers dishing out with what they have in an accident. and the count down has started are for the 88th annual academy awards. the buzz isn't

wncn's top stories today officials with the national weather service will be in our viewing area to confirm whether down. people near oxford in granville county say at least one hit there. there are no reports of any injuries. and in vance county some reported a tornado hit there as well. a home was damaged that was nearly 100 years old. at least three people died after a tornado hit in virginia. the twister hit in waverly that's a town about 45 miles southeast of richmond virginia. several roads still closed because of all the debris left behind. >> really tough to see that damage.

the good news is finally the sunshine back in our forecast. we're talking a mix of sun and clouds today. we'll look at clearer skies as we start off our friday and a cloud from time to time as we head throughout the afternoon of our friday and heading into the weekend ahead sunshine sticks around. so temperatures right now if you're getting ready to head out the door take a jacket, 45 in roanoke rapids and rocky mount, 44 in goldsboro. high today of 56 in raleigh, 55 in durham and 59 in fayetteville. fast forward to tonight it's going to be colder, a low right around freezing and it's still going to be breezy so the wind chills easily going to drop into the 20s overnight tonight. 50 tomorrow on friday and a cool start to the weekend. by sunday afternoon we are back to 60 and to start off next work week 64 for an afternoon high. it is 5:21 right now let's check in with traffic.

certain places to check out -- -- the wind advisory continues through 2:00 this afternoon. gusts could be as strong as 45 miles per hour, and as you can see it includes all of us here in central north carolina. again, so latest wind gusts 28 miles per hour in fayetteville, 28 miles per hour in goldsboro, very similar in rocky mount. around raleigh our latest gusts in the upper teens, and 26 miles per hour in south hill virginia. now, as far as our sat right radar composite is concerned, well, no rain anywhere in sight. we're looking at the clouds breaking up and that's one reason temperatures chillier this morning. we're going to be in the mid-40s as we start off our day. by lunchtime today we'll be close to 53, gusts again, near 45 miles per hour. now, we'll be closer to normal this afternoon, than where we've been over the past day or two, 56 our high.
