confined to a relatively narrow swath. take a look at the swath. you can see within it that the destruction was extensive. there are folks who are being paid to help clean up and then there are folks who just want to help. >> relatives jumped in and friends and neighbors -- just everybody willing. [ indiscernible ] it is just a good feeling. >> his 81-year-old mother survived the tornados wrath. she barricaded herself in the bathroom of this home. now folks from everywhere are offering to help. her other son said that makes things a lot easier. >> knowing you are not alone. knowing you have support and -- you don't even have to ask for the help. they are just here.

storm. a couple of local brothers showed up offering to help. news. i decided to come drop by and see if you wanted help. >> why do you want to open your heart like this in. >> just to help somebody out. feel bad everything happened. >> meanwhile state officials spent time here doing damage assessments. >> with no injuries and a very narrow swath a tornado took through here our assessment won't take too long. cal u.k. late -- calculating the figures probably will. >> back to you. >> wow. so much destruction but everybody coming together. >> yeah. it is great.

it is rocking side to side. >> we all know how big one of those are. the columns supporting it snapped. fortunately no one was injured. >> residents reported multiple trees down yesterday and power out ajs -- outages but the most unusual situation happened here at the gas station. >> it was a nerve wracking day yesterday. thank god we made it through it. >> take a look at what people near this gas station experienced yesterday. this video provided by the gas station manager shows a canopy above the gas pumps rocking side to side. a base column that supports the canopy snapped.

quickly. they closed the gas pumps off and roped the area off. it was taken care of quickly. >> today the gas station was closed. there were no injuries. emergency management also received reports of more than trees down throughout the area. in addition there was damage to a mobile home and out building all clear now. >> back out here live everything is back to normal. the gas station reopened about an hour or so ago. as you see the canopy is now gone but the manager of the gas station tells us they hope to have it back within the next month or so were no injuries. that is the latest here. back to you. >> the national weather service was also out in northern durham today surveying storm damage. we spoke with one neighbor who said when she looked outside

car or tree on her car. >> i just heard all this commotion and banging. i heard falling and -- i heard a crack. >> what you are looking at there is the aftermath. crews say it will take about an a week and a half to clean all that up. >> winds destroy about 15 homes here. look at this. the storm ripped off roofs and toppled trees. over 20,000 people in western north carolina remain without power tonight. those high winds toppled plenty of trees in our area as well >> that is right. it turned out to be a busy day for a tree removal company. >> it is the sound that is all too familiar on the day after a storm. the sight isn't something that happened everyday. trees flying over the top of house.

wind gusts have come down a bit but still above 20 miles per hour in many spots in central north carolina. 45 at 8:00. 40 overnight. friday morning 33 with a windchill of 29. numbers go down even more this weekend. we will talk about that in a bit. breaking news right now in wade county troopers are investigating a deadly crash on mitchel mill road. authorities say a car pulled out in front of another vehicle. one person died. three others were hurt. no word yet on their identities. this time in kansas. they are on the skeeven -- scene of an active shooter situation. our sister station reports of at least two people are dead and several others injured.

a johnstown county woman faces reckless driving charges following a crash that hurt four cyclists over the weekend. troopers say she struck them when she tried to pass them. a judge gave her a $2,000 bond. the crash happened saturday afternoon. two of the victims remain in the hospital tonight. a husband and wife face charges in connection with a bank robbery in apex. it happened yesterday. police arrested aaron wagoner inside the bank and following an investigate arrested his wife hannah later. investigators went door to door today searching for answers in the drive-by shooting of grandmother. back on february 12th someone fired into a home hitting dorothy in the legs. her injuries were so bad that doctors had to am but -- am but tate one of her legs. >> we want the suspects.

community -- appeal to anyone who might have information in this crime. if you have any information please call crime stoppers. human trafficking may seem like something that only happens oversea but local organizations say it is happening in our backyard. we spoke what former victim and here is her story. >> it is has taken sometime but she said 12 years later he is finally able to tell her story. >> i was forced to do unthinkable things. >> when she was 17 she turned to a 40-year-old man for attention. that man drugged her and force her to perform sex acts on camera. at the time she had no idea she was caught up in the world of human trafficking. >> it is a violent issue. >> she said her story is more prevalent than many would think. the large highway system in

easy access to traffic human victims. that is why the north carolina governor's crime commission is making ate priority this year to prevent human trafficking. >> i don't think people know the depths of human trafficking. i think the commission is extremely important to start to shine a light on the impact it has on north carolina communities. >> students are also trying to shine light on the issue. >> it affects people in your own community. it is not just third world countries. an ef-2 tornado ripped apart barns and damaged at least 50 buildings. in virginia high winds also brought down branchs and left thousands without power. >> our tram to trampoline is wrapped around our telephone pole. >> those wind gusts also knocked over a tractor trailer and brought traffic to a standstill in new york city. and we have quite the mess to clean up in a lot of our areas around here. >> we now have a total of three confirmed tornados in our area. we knew about the one in granville and vance county. the confirmed. a weak ef-1 tornado in northern durham. of course there is one in wayne county. that is three in our area. two on the coast. a total of five in february.

we have video of in henderson yesterday during the aughter --. there were some 21 tornado warnings issued. [ indiscernible ] on the ground. we had 21 warnings yesterday and throughout all of 2015 we only have five warnings issued. an amazing day yesterday. tonight it is chilly. it is still a little breezy. 48 degrees if you are getting ready to step outside. not as breezy as it was earlier though. here are some of the top wind gusts we have seen in the past 24 hours. 62 miles an hour in fort bragg. wayne county 51 miles an hour. up in oxford and in lieu ice louis --

it is currently 48 here inair to our north, with winds coming out of the north that cold air will get sucked into north carolina and you will feel it tomorrow morning. it will stay breezy tonight as we slowly drop through the 40s. going hour by hour you can see we are down 45 at 8:00. 42 at 10:00. no rain for the next couple of days. eventually clearing out. tomorrow morning 33 will feel like 29 degrees. at least it is friday, right? so two big things we are watctcng on the weather map. one is the area of low pressure way up to the northeast. that is the one that is connected to the cold front. yesterday. remember circulation around low pressure is counter clockwise. that is grabbing that cold air and pulling it down here. it is disagreeing with the opposite area of pressure. when those two get together, if
