on air, online, wherever you are, this is wncn news now at 6:00. good evening i'm maggie newland. thank you for joining us. it's primary night for democratics running for the white house. hillary clinton and bernie sanders are both hoping for a win ahead of super tuesday. john takes a look at this leg of the race. democratic voters in south carolina head to poling stations across the state to cast their ballot saturday. >> i'm going to vote for hillary. we're excited about her. i think madame president sounds really good. >> it sounds like this was an easy decision for you to make. >> i like the idea that she's a policy wonk and i think experience matters. >> both bernie sanders and hillary clinton spend it from campaigning through the palmetto state trying to sway last minute voters. clinton is expecting to win big. relying on her advantage with african american voters.

of her experience and her background and i feel she mae may lead us to the track obama was taking us to. >> i vote bernie sanders because of mass incarceration, needing jobs, and with him bringing this new positive energy, i'm voting for him. i'm thinking he'll make a change. the other people aren't really making a change. >> a win in south carolina could be a sign of what lies ahead on super tuesday where many of the states like alabama, georgia, and tennessee have a large percentage of african american voters. john lawrence, wncn news now. meanwhile, voters in north carolina are gearing up for the march 15th primary. two presidential headquarters are opening this weekend. this one for bernie sanders is located in durham. not far from the carolina theater. it'll be his main headquarters for the triangle and officially opens tomorrow. and today was the official opening for donald trump's headquarters in fayetteville.

candidate's first office to open in north carolina. each of the campaign offices are designed to build voter support by finding volunteers to hand out literature or call potential voters. north carolina's march 15th primary will be a historic election since it will be the first time voters will be expected to show identification before they vote. lauren shows us how the local naacp is encouraging everyone to vote. >> it's our time. it's our vote. >> the vote is the most important thing that a citizen has. >> during a passionate news conference the naacp wanted everyone to know. >> the extremists wanted a fight. you got one. you got one. when you mess with our voting rights, you got a fight on your hands. >> the group is upset about the voter id law that went into effect january 1st. >> whether it's a general

election, or a primary, the right to vote is fundamental. and it should not be denied. >> the naacp tried to fight the law before it passed in 2013 saying it was unconstitutional and put an unfair burden on black and hispanic voters. speak we challenge the laws because of what they're going to do and also because of the purpose in which they were enacted. >> the law requires identification to cast a ballot, the naacp says everyone should vote even if they don't have one. >> every eligible voter should be able to cast their ballot this march. >> the civil rights group is enlisting 3,000 communities of faith and 4500 volunteers to educate voters. >> we're going so organize throughout north carolina. we're going to further organize in 90 counties, because we

>> north carolina is sending a message to this nation. do not play politics with the right to vote. >> after speaking with the media, the group got to work on their mission. lauren, wncn news now. >> groups including the naacp will have 700 pole monitors set up across the state to help voters cast ballot. they're document issues that may come up because of confusion concerning the law. the ncaacp talked about the disappointment with the new congressional map. they feel the map should have been drawn by a nonpartisan group it was redrawn after a panel declared two districts were created along racial lines. we have posted a full explanation about redistricting and the changes in the maps on wncn.com. search congressional districts.

chuck e cheese's restaurant wasn't supposed to be there and was taken into custody according to deputies. they tell the daily news of jacksonville, he's a sex offender and isn't supposed to be around kids. authorities are still searching for the person responsible for a shooting that sent a 56-year-old woman to the hospital. it happened last evening on arrowhead drive. neighbors her some kind of argument and then they heard gunshots. wake county sheriff's fice tells us the woman was not the intended target. she's expected to recover. remembering nick bell. he was shot and killed last month. the victim of the first homicide in durham this year. this afternoon a vigil was held in his honor. amy cutler was at the vigil and has more as community members are coming together. bell. his mother, siblings, and local religious leaders reflecting on bell and what a talented man he was.

since he was found shot to death. his body was found behind a house on the 2800 block of ash street. it was the first homicide of 2016. family and friends tell us he was an athlete and musician and living on ash street with friends. police arrested three men in connection with his killing but today wasn't about that. >> i miss nick jumping down my stairs and looking back saying don't do that. yourself going to hurt yourself. i miss him calling me on the phone saying mom, i need a couple dollars. i miss it. i really do. >> in durham, amy cutler, wncn news now. >> days after tornadoes ripped through parts of north carolina, several families remain without a home tonight. a total of five tornadoes hit the state, including ones in grandville, vance, durham, and wayne counties, the red cross helped nine families. mostly in the eastern part of the state.

stay in their homes. but they are staying in the homes of friends and family and hotels. fortunately no one was seriously injured in the state due to the storms. the skies are clear now. how's the rest of the weekend looking? let's send it to meteorologist bill ray. >> good evening everybody. it was very cold this morning. it's turned out very nice. we'll zoom into the city of raleigh from the tower cam, 48 degrees now. 51 in fayetteville. 50 in dunn. 46 in roxboro. the low this morning was 24. these are still below normal temperature wise for this time of year. as we pull out, there's high pressure sitting over us. and it's going to back off a little bit. we're going to get a southwesterly flow come our way tomorrow. and that's going to warm us up more. if you're heading out this evening, the sun goes down, it's going down as we speak. mostly clear, clear skies through the evening hours, temperatures will be 45 at 7:00. and then we'll drop into the 30s at midnight.

over night hows, not as bad as the 24 this morning. but you'll want to get your coat out if you want to get up to services. 34 in fayetteville for lows. 33 in rocky mount. you want a sneak peek at tomorrow, here it is, sun, sun, sun, sun. and not as cold in the morning. mild temperatures up into the as a matter of fact, things are going to look nice and clear like they do right now. we'll come back with more details of your forecast and tell you when the next weather maker is coming your way in a few minutes. the marine core is changing training techniques after a marine died of heatstroke during a training exercise. corporal alexis died last summer while on a six mile hike with his unit. investigators believe an empty stomach and other factors made him more susceptible to the heat. there will be new standards for training exercises designed to protect marines from weather conditions and respond to weather related injuries.

a doctor managed to get a saturday appointment today. the durham va medical center took part in the national access stand down the department of veteran affairs created the day in hopes of seeing patients in a more timely fashion. it can take a month to see a doctor for an appointment. days like today are designed to help improve things. we are fortunate here in durham that we have had very good access that continues to improve. and so we are always grateful that we have a day to focus on lots of new patients that we can welcome to the system. >> a raleigh based clinic also helped out today by seeing veterans who needed urgent care. torres a state grant program will fund three film projects here in north carolina. the projects include an independent feature film, a television series and a televised version of the hit movie dirty dancing the projects are expected to create 7600 jobs.

a church organized the clean up effort. volunteers removed trash outside the school and cleaned up inside too. >> we've done a bunch of grounds work cleaning up. cleaning a bunch of windows. cleaned bathrooms. trying to beautify the school. make it a better environment for the students. >> the church plans to host events like this each month to focus on serving the community in durham. we know teachers spend a lot of their own money on their classrooms and students. that's why 16 years ago a schoolteacher in the bronx started an organization to help. it's called coners choose.org. as julie reports it's raised more than $400 million for public skyzooms across the country. the 3d printer is warming up inside his seventh grade classroom. >> it's one of the latest pieces of technology out there. >> technology isn't cheap. this printer cost around $1,000.

in less than seven days. >> come up with a lesson, how are you going to use, implement this in your classroom? >> it's a nonprofit for educators. teachers make a wish list of what they want in their classroom. each request is vetted by teachers. >> we work with amazon and best buy. as well as different companies that have specialized services like carolina biological supply for science equipment. >> parents and community members can make donations. same with complete strangers. eric needed mice for the chrome books in his classroom. >> a random donor for texas made a donation toward the computer mice. a random woman from colorado made a donation. >> first year high school geology teacher kayla would like geology kits. >> i got $200 donated from random organizations and people who were looking to help

>> she still needs $815 for the project and is optimistic. eric is thrilled for the resources he has for his class. and so are his students who wrote thank you notes to the donors. >> it was nice they had the kindness in their heart to make those donations. >> great program there. teachers can share pictures or post with donors to see exactly how their dollars are being used in classrooms. projects stay on the website for four months. if the project isn't funded the money is returned. governor pat pat mccrory wants to hear your input about a monument on the capitol grounds. there will be four public input sessions across the state. one tuesday march 22nd at the memorial library in rocky mount as well as tuesday march 29th at the charlotte auditorium at

if you live in fayetteville, you may notice a change in your watt water starting tuesday. the city will flush the system. during the process chlorine maybe more noticeable and the water could be discolored. if you pretreat your water, continue to do so. a partnership to help control the animal population, the post is teaming up with cumberland county animal control to keep track of unwanted animals and give people a place to surrender animals. fort bragg used a volunteer center to deal with animals but that's now closed the new partnership begins march 1st. today is national strawberry day. a day to celebrate in north carolina. strawberry season isn't far off. the southeastern part of the state harvests berries in april. but may is the biggest month for strawberries. almost all strawberries produced are grown in the state.

coming in with that 61 degrees. monday's a special day for a couple reasons. one it's leap day. we love that. but most importantly, we become cds. and when we do on that day, enjoy a fair morning with a few clouds, there will be that dry cold front coming through the day. just a few clouds. but we'll keep it partly sunny at worst. temperatures in the low 60s at noon and 5:00 p.m. with that high of 66 degrees. and then as we move into march, 68 on tuesday. that's not bad. and then on wednesday, that's our next weather maker. so on wednesday, 60 degrees. we'll see those showers scattered at 8:00 a.m. and noon. by drive time it'll be clearing. maybe a rumble of thunder. temperatures in the 50s most of the day with the high of 60. a little chillier on thursday. and then another weather maker on friday. it'll be a chillier type rain. we'll see rain through the morning and afternoon hours. just a slight risk getting ready for the weekend. temperatures only 48 degrees on friday.

it wasn't enough. syracuse beat state. and a championship game for shaw university's women's basketball team today. they took on virginia union university this afternoon for the 2016 ciaa championship in charlotte. virginia union got off to a fast start taking an eight point lead. shaw managed to catch up. but it wasn't enough in the end.
