first from the high tide that came overnight. the third highest tide in history here in charlest in the harbor. now with the rain that is coming and all of this churng is pushing up the water on both sides here in charleon. so we are seeing streets and places are waist-deep. e tide has come down some. the low tide normally would be a foot. we are seeing tides around seven feet. flooding remains the big concern. the rain continues. still seeing stron winds about he know trees are down acros 95 and other freeways and part of the why the evacuatio orders were in effect here here in charleston. the mayor said he thinks half the city was left a they were very clear to people living in low lying areas, get out or you take a listen. >> some low lying areas where we were knocking on doors going door-to-door urging people to leave and we knew they were in

them for information about their next of kin. >> reporter: so the curfew here in charleston lifted in the last hour. we are starting to see people out and about. road are still flooded. and the worst of this storm, we understa, is yet to get here. we are not seeing hurricane force winds yet but not a good situation for charleston as the danger of flooding will continue the next several hours. dana? >> kris, be another of the south's historic cities was hit hard by matthew overnight. jericka duncan is in savannah, georgia, where flooding is a major concern. >> repter: matthew ripped through savannah last night. the stormntensified in the early morning hours, dropping several inches of rain, before the storm really started to make its impact. 75% of people who live in chatham county where savannah is located evacuated. >> i've got a family, two little

when the tree could come in the roof. >> reporter: the big concern now is flooding. matthew's storm surge was projected to reach up to 11 feet some some coastal communities and meanwhile,ome of savannah's streets were emerged before the worst of matthew even arrived. to the south of us on this enclave of st. simon's eyelid the beach isn't even visible and in coastal brunswick, the streets were flooded long before the most severe storsurge. savannah, georgia. for more on the track of the storm, here is lonnie quinn, chief weather caster at wcbs tv. where is this thing headed? >> reporter: good morning, everyone. it's moving to the north/northeast and literally hug the south carolina coast. the way that it did the florida coast, except maybe even a little further inland. to the latest information from the national hurricane center. 30 miles to the south/southwest

keeping people from downed power lines in the most dangerous places. the evacuate order has not yet been lifted. so really all people can do is take in what was an intenseay hurricane matthew brought with it. the powerf storm slammed the coast here in jacksoille. wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour sent sheets of rain sideways. high surf and a strong storm surge sent water pouring into the streets. 500,000 people were told to evacuate but marisa hickson chose to stick it out. >> i want to be with my family. we talked through this and we want to be here. >> reporter: the biggest concern he is flooding. sand dunes meant to protect the city were no match for the rising water. florida governor rick scott. >> river flooding could last even longer. >> reporter: in st. augustine,

pummeled america's oldest city, many residents have been trapped in their homes or business. this man on the porch of a bed and breakfast said 20 people were stuck inside. wind gusts reaching at least 80 miles per hour tore through roofs. snapped power lines and toppled trees. magnolia drive is now completely covered with broken branches. and no further storm earlier on friday. the only thing protecting this home from the storm surge was a glass patio door. many homes and businesses suffered significant damage. this gas station was leveled by the strong winds and heavy rainfall. as the storm heads nort residents will wait for the floodwaters to die down before starting to rebuild.

i'm beairshelle edme. we move to coverage of hurricane matthew, while many people are evacuating areas that might be affected by the hurricane, emergency officials are doing the opposite, governor pat mccrory is warning all north carolinians to be careful while state agencies researchers including water rescue teams and air sport and extra law enforcement have been deployed to areas that may be affected by the storm. we turn now to storm team meteorologist kristin ketchell who has been taking a very close look at where this hurricane's path may be. >> absolutely, and right now, matthew is still a very dangerous storm. category two hurricane with winds at 105 miles an hour, gusting to 125 miles an hour. and the eye of the storm is still sitting offshore here of georgia and south carolina. and the eye has become more

as -- weakening a bit as it continues to work to the north/northeast. it is a dangerous storm. it is causing rain across a large portion of central north carolina this morning. you can see some of the heavy showers indicated by the yellow and orange colors in the radar here. especially across the sand hills, we are seeing some heavy rain in parts of sampson county and cumberland county as well. the latest track has not shifted very much. matthew will still remain offshore of north carolina here, by 2:00 tomorrow morning, it will be to the wilmington, and continue to take a trek out over the open atlantic. but its impacts will be felt even this far inland here, we are looking around the triangle, anywhere from two to seven inches of rain possible, with wind gusts up to 40 miles an hour. and the hardest hit areas, unfortunately, are going to be some of the same places that dealt with some heavy rain with the storm just a few weeks ago. seven to nine inches across the sand hills. flash flood watch in effect until 6:00 tomorrow. and wind advisory also into effect. but drier weather rolling in,

hurricane matthew is battering south carolina this morning. the eye of the storm was at hilton head, island. mexico sustained winds are 105 miles an hour. the massive category two storm struck the coast with dangerous overnight and creating monster waves. >> forecasters say 15 inches of rain and storm surge up to nine feet is possible in sth carolina's low country today. matthew is blamed for at least 800 deaths in haiti and fourn the u.s. path of matthew throughout the morning. a serious and growing problem. texting while driving. police say drivers who text behalf much like drunk drivers. but catching violators in the

literally. i'm surprised it's controversial at times as well. what exactly is it >> it is a blood test, a screening test that hopes to pick up cancer before there are symptoms and when it's early enough we can treat it appropriately. a blood test that looks at levels of protein secreted or from the prostate cells. this psa level, no real normal level in terms of normal or abnormal. no cutoff. if the level is it suggests that is more greater than 10, 50% of men will have a cancer diagnos. there can be false s/negatives. if you take medicines like pro scar or propetia could lower your level. the biggest reason is controversial is we pick up

to prevent this but are there ways with diet and exercise that you can tryo reduce your risk? >> sure. well, you're right. there is no anti-cancer diet for any specific cancer. but studies do show that by eating 2 1/2 cups of produce each day. fruits and veggies, we know people are not getting enough of this is one way to reduce your disk. there are food like walnut that show promise with prostate cancer. also getting regar we are talking about daily. and staying at a healthy weight. of course the regular exercise and two and a hal cups of provide will he produce will help you stay at a healthy wait. the holiday dreaded weight gain. thanksgiving is fast approaching. a new study published in the new england journal of medice say we may gain pound along with the gifts w get during the holiday season. the study examined people in the

center of circulation is still sitting off the coast of south carolina. but we are dealing with some heavy rain. and also some high winds. you can see the 8:00 a.m. advisory, it was actually just downgraded, 85 mile-an-hour winds, so matthew is continuing to weaken, still a very dangerous storm though, and we do have some heavy rain falling across central north carolina right now, and you can see some of the yellows, some of the oranges, on the radar there, indicating the potential for some heavy downpours moving in from the southeast, and pushing up toward the northwest. so expect heavy rain and winds across the area today. again the latest updated track still has matthew skimming the coast of the carolinas, here throughout the day, before taking a swing out to sea here. category one storm now, so it was downgraded from a category two hurricane. one to two inches of rain likely in the extreme northwestern corner of our viewing area. all the way down to seven to nine inches or more, rain likely across parts of the sand hills today, with 40 to 50 mile- an-hour wind gusts. flash flood watch in effect until 6:00 tomorrow. for the counties in green.

good morning, i'm justin quesinberry. thank you for watching cbs north carolina. while many people are evacuating areas that might be affected by hurricane matthew, our emergency officials are doing just the opposite. governor pat mccrory is warning all north carolinians to be careful. while state agie prepared. resours, water resource teams and extra law enforcement and support are deployed already to areas that might be affected by the storm. and meteorologist kristin ketchell is watching the storm very closely and its impact on our state and our area. and it will have quite the impact as of the latest update from the national hurricane center, and matthew has been downgraded to a hurricane one hurricane, still a very dangerous storm here, and winds at 85 miles an hour. and those gusts still up to 125 miles per hour.

good morning, i'm justin quesinberry. thanks for watching cbs north carolina. governor pat mccrory is set to give us a new update on hurricane matthew at the top of the hour. we will take you to the emergency operations center live, and take the news conference in its entirety. you can also stream the event live on our web site at wncn the past hour has weakened to a category one storm. kristen? >> it has weakened to a category one storm, it does not mean it is still very, very dangerous here. winds right now at 85 miles an hour, gusting to 125 miles an hour. due to the location and how closely it is hugging the coast. we are in for a very messy day across central north carolina, and heavy rain, already falling, in many locations, here, and we have some florida warnings in effect for parts of the area as well.

that heavy rain, across parts of sampson county county and moore county and cumberland county and harnett county and lee county, and hoke county, dealing with heavier rain showers, pushing in, parts of wayne county to johnston county. and a flash flood watch in effect for the entire cbs carolina news viewing area and central north carolina for heavy rain and of course the risk of flash flooding and the flash flood warnings in effect for. so counties we mentione hoke, moore lee and harnett counties, until 2:30 this afternoon. that means that flooding is definitely possible in these areas inned to that, we have wind issues as well. wind advisories in effect for the counties you see shaded in the tan color. and high wind warnings, for the spots in purple there. that's for gusts up to 60 miles an hour. so tropical storm force winds possible, across parts of the area today, and we will be dealing with the heavy rain and also those high wind gusts throughout the day.
