fire the latest director is just a bad call. >> it is a place where kids fly high. and just have fun. >> this is one of the oldest recommend centers in baltimore city. >> yesterday volunteers at the roosevelt center in hammond were thrown a curve ball when they learned the head of the city's department of recommend and parks, duane thomas was fired. >> in the last 30 years, he is the first head of recommend and parks that had actually came out to the center. other than if it was a problem. >> thomas took over last june. and according to the volunteers, gave it a much needed boost in morale. which they now fear will go away. >> he came and made us feel like we were important to the city. and like we were really cared about. >> the mayor stephanie rawlings-blake tells a different story. criticizing department for years of problems.

lack of leadership. organization. and transparency. as well as declining enrollment at the 55 recommend centers, many of which will face closures this fall. >> there are too many communities and families that depend on the services of the recreation and parks department. to allow it, in my opinion, to languish. >> former director of recreation for montgomery county beared, will replace thomas. mayor is confident that beared will move the department forward. and volunteers hope so too. >> we sincerely hope mr. beared, the new recommend director will continue that feeling of making communities feel like they count. >> and we spoke tonight over the phone, with duane thomas, he says that he was asked to be interim director during one of the toughest times in the city's history, mayoral transition and that he made the department of recommend and parks stronger, in the short time that he was there.

he also added that he appreciates the support, and he hopes to improve the lives of young people in the future. be it here in baltimore, or somewhere else. live in hampden. myranda stephens, fox 45 news "late edition". >> mistaken speeding tickets means the city will refund thousands of dollars. camera on coldspring lane and 83 has been operating since february. two weeks ago we learned the speed limit conflicted with what the camera was recording. officials say 200 of the 932 tickets have already been paid which mes nearly nine grand will have to be refunded. >> the whole purpose is to put up a speed camera and notify the public to slow down, you are in a school zone. but if they do not do that put up a hidden camera and call it a school zone, you know, it looks like really in it for the revenue, not necessarily the safety of the children. >> meantime, should school zone signs be posted?

a spokesperson with the transportation department said there are no rules addressing that very issue. meantime mr. struckmyer and others are waiting for their refund. >> jurors will deliberate again tomorrow in the trial of lamont davis. davis is charged with with two counts of attempted murder. last summer when a 5-year-old girl was shot. if he is convicted. davis faces a possible life sentence on each count. >> and a carroll county man is charged with sexually attacking his girlfriend's 21 month old daughter. at ryan gifford's parents' home in westminster, when the mother was sleeping in another room. charging documents indicate the child had bruises abrasions and burns. police say gifford and the mother were drinking before the child was attacked. >> you don't like to hear this happening anywhere. and it is scary when you have your own children in this neighborhood to hear someone, four houses down, has abused a

child. >> and it is someone that you have known. >> well, tonight gifford remains locked up and the child is still at johns hopkins. >> new information on the police beating in college park. fbi has joined in the investigation. and pg county police have suspended a second police officer now. because of a video showing cops beating a university of maryland student affidavit terps beat duke. police say the first officer suspended filed charging documents against two students. including the one in the video. being beaten. prosecutors have dropped assault charges against those students. more police suspensions however, are expected in the very near future. >> spring weather has returned again. nice out there. >> it has. hopefully more of the same tomorrow. vytas reid is here to let us know if that's the case. >> yeah, better conditions tomorrow. if you like today, you will like tomorrow even more. because it will warm up. and we will deliver the sunshine. good news. looking at the radar right now. no activity out there. mainly clear skies. and we will continue to stay

clear through the overnight. welcoming the sunshine tomorrow. and also we will start to see more of a westerly wind that helps to bring the temperatures up quite a bit. right currently now downtown at 54 degrees. 52 in d.c.. and 52 in hagerstown. and for the next day planner, you can see start out in the mid 40s by 6 a.m.. and warm up quickly through the morning to the afternoon, around 70 by lunch time. we can actually get into the mid 70s later, after one or 2:00. so it looks like the warm air will feel good out there. closer look at how long it will stick around in the seven day coming up. >> maryland's blue crab population has been struggling for years but today there are more evidence that crabs are making a comeback. new study discovered that the blue crab population has increased 60 percent over the last year alone. great news for crab restaurant owners struggling in the past to decrease prices for years. >> well, we would be able to lower prices, if that's true, there are 60 percent more crabs in maryland. we can get off the louisiana

crabs. make their prices go down when there is more cobbs locally. >> nice crabs locally. >> state officials say it is too early yet to say when and if crabbing restrictions will be eased. >> maryland's public interest research group said state is behind on its energy efficiency goals. report found bge and other utility companies are falling 25 percent short of the energy savings, promised under the empower maryland act. that passed back in 2008. and it could save consumers and businesses more than $860 million, and create 8000 new jobs. by 2015. if implemented. >> the state wants drivers to be more careful in work zones. a work zone safety awareness campaign began today at six sniff charles street where construction is underway. over the last 10 years, 1400 people have been hurt in maryland work zone crashes, 12 were killed.

at 48. clear skies. winds out of the west-southwest at five. that will be the key. because the winds will continue to stay out of the west-southwest. and that will help to bring in the warmer air that was over the ohio river valley earlier today. so that will feel good into the afternoon tomorrow. currently cross the state. 54 degrees in baltimore. 52 in d.c. eastern shore, salisbury, slightly cooler at 44. and also on the western edge of the state 43 degrees. we will see the temperatures changing quite a bit. because you can see where the cooler air and then warmer air. even evening time temperatures in the 60s. upper 60s. indianapolis at 69. and earlier today, seeing temperatures in the 80s. we were seeing the warmer temperatures that will be replacing the cooler air that is over us. as we go through the next couple of days. now as far as what we will see happen is that warmer air continues to track our direction. taking the temperatures up for the next couple of days. and then the next changing force comes from the northwest. which is a area of low pressure, and also cold front extending over parts of wisconsin, and minnesota.

that will start to sweep over our region late friday afternoon and friday night. best chance to give us showers and thunderstorms. but until then, on future scan, you can see clear skies. clear conditions. plenty of sunshine. through the day tomorrow. most of the day on friday. i think start out with sunshine, into the afternoon. and then the front approaches. giving us chance for thunderstorms on friday. nice evening, take the umbrella. 48 for tomorrow. and plenty of sunshine. downtown looks beautiful at 74 degrees. and then on the five-day forecast. you can see how the temperatures top out at 74 tomorrow. 78 on friday. almost brushing 80 degrees. then the cold front moves in late friday. and giving us the thunderstorms. maybe gusty late friday night s day morning trailing shower early, and we may get the sunshine back in the picture late saturday afternoon. 66 the high. 62 sunday. and then it looks like more sunshine involved on monday at 66. >> derrick mason signed a

after retiring temporarily last summer. but recently put all of that talk to rest by signing a two-year contract with the ravens that carrys him through age 38. >> for me, it was a no-brainer. to sign that. because, i don't think there was any other opportunity that was as good as this one. considering, you know who we have on the football field. for me to go anywhere else, i think would have been a step back. it is a joy and a honor for me to be a part of this team and organization. >>as a coach you want as many good players as you can have. derrick is a great player. so a receiving core becomes that much better than last year. with the guys we have added. so that's a big plus. we do not take that for granted. the fact that we signed a big free agent here in derrick mason. >> mason told kristen berset he came back because this is the best chance to win a superbowl before calling it a career. back to you. >>loxñ
