distribution center on fayette street in downtown baltimore, found more than 1200 greeting cards that had been torn open. investigators say 20 to 100 rife l.e.d. cards found daily. one belonged to a grandmother in harford county that mailed $50 gift card to her 3-year-old granddaughter in virginia that never made it. >> i was angry. how could somebody steal from a 3-year-old. i am sure they did not know how old my granddaughter was. but still. birthday card said happy birthday 3-year-old. >> well, walsh had the initial appearance in federal court today. if convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison. keith daniels, fox 45 news "late edition". >> all right, keith. towson university students are on high alert tonight after another student is robbed at gunpoint. it happened just after midnight at a frat house, 200 block of burke avenue. one of the students that lives

there was doing homework when about six guys wearing red ban dannan nas stormed in and robbed them. >> yeah, he said the first guy had a revolver and second and third had knives. he did not recognize the rest. told to stay in the kitchen. not to move. >> robbers got cash, computers, video gaming system. police are trying to determine if this incident is connected to one last month where two towson university students were assaulted and robbed in their dorm room. >> arundel county police arrest 21-year-old jarvis spain of milwaukee wisconsin. he went to a home in the 500 block of norton way in arnold and asked the woman to use her bathroom. police say he then sexually assaulted a woman in the home. spain is held on $2 million bail tonight. >> the owners of skate works, reach a deal allowing the woodlawn roller rink to remain open. owners agreed to hire four uniformed police officers for weekend evenings, holidays and special events. police had complained of rowdy

crowds and disturbances outside of the rink on fridays. owners have been sued at least 10 times. the rink is still in bankruptcy. >> city cops on patrol in west baltimore drive up to a stabbing and shooting in progress, it happened at 11:00 last night in the 1700 block of fulton avenue. kevin highslop died at the hospital. stabbing victim survived. they arrested calvin williams as a suspect in the murder. >> first on fox tonight. a child with cerebral palsy said she was attacked by other students at her own school. allegedly occurred in the 3rd grade classroom in west baltimore. shanya spent today at home. too afraid to return to gilmore elementary, where she claims classmates kicked her crutchs, and punched her. tuesday the attacks led her to a window ledge. >> because i felt mad, and because people keep on teasing

me, so i felt mad, so i wanted to jump out the window. >> tonight school administrators say they will not comment on the case. but they have anti-bullying policies, and there are consequences for violations of the code. meantime, a police report has been filed. >> that brings us to the question of the day now. are schools doing enough to protect students from bullying? nearly every one said no. jessica said on facebook tonight. schools should take reports of bullying made by children much more seriously and punish those that bully accurately and effectively. >> the baltimore mom that starved her son to death will not go to jail. judge granted her freedom today. but with a caveat. jeff abell explains. >> even prosecutors called this a fair sentence insisting ria ramkissoon did not maliciously intend to kill her one-year-old son. today a judge sentenced ramkissoon to five years probation and ordered her to check herself in to a residential treatment facility. she had earlier pleaded guilty to child abuse.

and admitting that she starved her one-year-old son to death because he did not say amen during meal time. she was a member of a religious cult and blamed action is on the brain washing tactics. last month a jury convicted three other cult members of sec degree murder and today ramkissoon's mother insisted it was the cult that turned her daughter into an abuse simpler i know how she loved her son. i watch her with her son. i see it. i was there when he was born. i seen from that day on. i know the person that she is. i know how she is with kids. so when this happen it is like i don't know who this is. >> and she really was very misled by them. but it was obvious to us, in meeting with her and speaking with her, that she was very sincere. that she was telling us the truth. >> at the defendant's request today's plea agreement did contain one unusual clause.

stating that the charges against the defendant will be dismissed if her son rises from the dead. jeff abell, fox 45 news "late edition". >> new information now about another video of a university of maryland student being beaten. this was shot in march. when maryland beat duke. university cameras may have captured the beating as well. 90 minutes of the surveillance video, including the beating, was missing. school officials now want to know why only 87 minutes have been recovered. >> police say the 82-year-old kent island woman allegedly beaten to death last week by her husband suffered from alzheimers. they say she was recently very combative and verbally abusive told her husband. he was charged for murder and arson. >> the family of a baltimore fire cadet that died during a training exercise three-years ago files a 35 million-dollar lawsuit against the city of baltimore. rachael wilson took part in what is called a live burn.

suit claims conditions in the rowhouse were unsafe. but the city solicitor denies claims of gross negligence. >> it was a terrible accident. mistakes clearly made. no doubt about that. but that doesn't mean though that the -- employer is liable to an employee under those circumstances. >> lawyers for wilson's family failed to reach at an out of court settlements in the case. >> baltimore city council members want verizon to bring fios to baltimore city. growing number of city leaders want verizon to bring the fiber optics here. baltimore is the only major jurisdiction in maryland that does not have it. a hearing will be held wednesday. >> state property taxes will remain the same for the fifth year straight. board of public works voted to hold property taxes steady. property owners pay 11.2 cents for $100 of assessed value.

>> after days of being stranded in europe, hundreds of thousands of travelers are coming home. volcano in iceland, of course, last week, caused explosions to damage planes, canceling thousands of flights. full flight from london came to bwi thurgood marshall airport earlier today. around 7:30. passengers say leath row airport was surprisingly calm during the whole disruption. but they were very happy to be home. >> to be stranded somewhere, not be able to get home. you begin to wonder -- realize how wonderful home is. >> all flights coming in or going out, are expected to be on time.

hilton over 14 months. rnc doubled that in three days, spending $340,000 ebe gathering in hawaii. >> they are often criticizing the other for how lavishly they spend money in congress or in government. and at the end of the day, both parties are spending tens of millions of dollars. even hundreds of millions of dollars to run the party's operations. >> by contrast typical non-profit spends no more than 25 percent of total revenues on administrative and fund raising costs. picking up the tab at the right places. james rosen, fox news. >> state prosecutors have been asked to look into questionable campaign spending by senator keri. board of elections asked for an investigation into nearly $54,000 of campaign spending. unrelated to running for office. the elections board found purchases for an eye exam. online games. and car repairs. by law, campaign funds, of course, can only be used for elections. no comment from keri tonight.

>> with a stroke of a pen, baltimore city toughened the ethics laws. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake signed two bills into law today. both aimed at increasing independence, transparency, and training on the ethics board. the measure now prohibits city, state, county workers from serving on the board as well as lobbyists. >> people of our city and of our state demand more. from government, and this new ethics board, i think is a good example of us moving forward. >> three new members of the ethics board were also sworn in today. >> rain today, gone tomorrow. maybe. lets check back with vytas reid for a look at the weekend forecast. vytas? >> yeah, it looks like we saw our share of showers. quarter of an inch, more in some areas. three quarters of an inch. but it looks like we will continue to see showers pushing off to the east. making way for hd skycam showing few drops on there. making way for clearing. but drops dry up tomorrow.

sun basting out there. good day. 52 degrees. clouds remaining over the city. we will see breaks in the clouds later on. as we continue to get this front pushing off to the east. winds calm at zero. humidity levels at 100 percent. moist out there as far as the air. and as far as the almanac page, shows temperature of 58 topping out today. our high today, normally, should be around 66 degrees. so we are a little below that. but see the temperatures warming up nicely through the day tomorrow. which would be good. cross the state, temperatures in the mid 50s. 50 in oakland. 54 in hagerstown. and 54 in d.c. 53 in salisbury. and start to see the warmer air moving in from the west. in fact, on the bigger picture you can see 60s back to the west. and we will see the temperatures gradually go up with the help of sunshine and the wind direction change out of the southwest. looking at what is going on on the other front here. continue to see the rain pushing east. breaks in the clouds off to the west. few remaining showers you toward

cleveland. and another weather system off to the west. back over the plains joining us toward the weekend. until it gets here, few good days out of the forecast. looking at the low pushing off to the east. clearing for the next couple of days. thanks to high pressure north. and we have to keep our eye on the next system. back over the plains. over parts of missouri, and into arkansas. that will continue to slide our direction. probably by late saturday afternoon, saturday night to sunday. we will see the activity moving into our forecast. tonight looking at the clouds breaking up. temperatures around 54. and winds out of the south at five. and then for tomorrow, plenty of sunshine. looks like a nice day with the temperatures in the lower 70s. and with a northwest wind at about five to 15. and your five-day forecast shows 69 on friday. slightly cooler. but we will have sunshine. and maybe start out with sun and clouds early saturday morning. through the day, more clouds gather. with the potential for rain increasing later hours. saturday night probably see decent rain coming down. lingers to sunday. and carry on through the first part of next week. back to you.

>> severe thunderstorms in texas spun into, at least, two tornadoes. get this. this one was spotted in the texas panhandle. officials say it touched down in a rural area. there were no reports of injures. >> shark took a bite out of this surfer's fun. he found himself on top of the shark so he tried to stay calm and slide off. >> then the next thing you know, he was gone. there was my board. i got on my board and kept surfing. >> they believe the surfer had a close encounter with a 14-foot tiger shark. he was unharmed. but his surf board was not as luck. >> these contestants are more wrinkles and slobber rethan you would expect at a beauty pageant. competing in des moines iowa 31st annual beautiful bulldog contest. 50 dogs faced off to replace last year's winner fore house as the official mascot for the

annual relays at drake university. at the end meat ball took home the crown. megan gilliland, fox 45 news "late edition". >> the other shoe has dropped on ben roethlisberger after a series of embarrassing public incidents, he was disciplined today by commission girdle. and it is the substantial penalty. he has been suspended for six games without pay. he was also ordered to undergo a comprehensive behavioral analysis. if he progresses enough goodell could short it to four games. but he will miss the game with the ravens october 3. roethlisberger has not reacted. but president rooney said he agrees and fully supports goodell's action. >> we want to make sure that ben was not involved in the crime that he was accused of being involved in. and certainly if that were the case it would have been a different situation.

so we were dealing with a conduct as we understood it. based on the investigation. and, i think,, that the discipline is appropriate. >> and the steelers are preparing for big ben's absence by making a move at the quarterback position. trading seventh round pick to buccaneers for leftwich. he was a backup in 2008 when they won the superbowl. throwing for 303 yards and 2 touchdowns. acquisition of leftwich could open the door for a possible roethlisberger trade. stay tune. >> and like the steelers, ravens are in full draft mode. begins tomorrow night. nfl draft heads into the first ever prime time session. and everyone it seems has an opinion of what the ravens should do. even though ozzie newsome goes best player available. one area where they need help is tight end. todd heap is getting older. and gresham is the best of the bunch and ozzie does not rule out drafting a tight end. >> if you look at it today.

you could say it is a good class. but until they are on the field and play, it will take us 2 to 3 years to make the determination. but when you look at it, i could probably say this, probably a tight end that we probably could take in every round. in this draft. we would probably feel good about. >> baseball, orioles reacquired corey patterson that spent 2006 and 2007 seasons here in baltimore. he will be sent to norfolk. he spent time in milwaukee, washington and arizona organizations. since leaving the birds. lou montinez called up to replace felix peia creating the empty spot in norfolk. >> patterson's younger brother eric, plays for the a's. back to7
