the officer said he was a victim of a hate crime. but the suspect's family tell a different story. charging documents say around 2:30 this morning, detective germane cook was driving near his job to home. while at a stop sign he was confronted by 20-year-old james kimble that yelled at him for speeding. the two argued. and he is accused of hitting the officer in the face with a glass mug. during the argument, officials say kimball used racial slurs and threaten to hang detective cook. police are calling it a hate crime. suspect's family said it was self defense. >> they were going chest to chest for awhile. and then he pulled something out of the pocket. and then my son thought it was a knife. and was trying to defend himself. >> it was not a hate crime. >> police did not recover a knife. and say the suspect was intoxicated and that his cuts were the result of broken glass,

and he has been charged with first degree assault and hate crime. meantime detective cook is out of surgery. no word on how much, if any, eye sight was lost. reporting live at city police headquarters. karen parks, fox 45 news "late edition". >> developing story in baltimore city tonight. a woman's body found this afternoon in the 3200 block of the alameda. homicide detectives are investigating. for now it is considered a suspicious death. >> harford county sheriff's deputies looking for more possible victims of a suspected peeping-tom. david jones lives in jarretsville. he is charged with production of child pornography and sexual abuse of a minor. deputies arrested jones last month for videotaping a neighbor's teenage daughter through a window. investigators searched joan's home and found several videos of other girls, some of them in their bedrooms and showers. all of this is shocking news for neighbors. >> you know, you trust your

neighbors. your area where you live. and you know, so it is just kind of disappointing that they are your neighbors or people in your community that stoop to that level. >> jones is in jail tonight on $500,000 bond. >> 46-year-old woman is extraditeed and charged in the murder of a dc middle school principal. charged with threat and fraud after using the victim's credit cards. three stoogesers charged with the murder have lengthy criminal pasts. under the care apparently of this district's youth rehabilitation services. but were unaccounted for at the time brian betts was murdered back on april 15. 32-year-old charles martin is found guilty of trying to murder his girlfriend, martin was married. when his girlfriend became pregnant. and prosecutors claim that led him to shoot her. jodi is now paralyzed. her baby did not survive. >> there are questions tonight whether warning signs were

overlooked. surrounding the death of yeardley love. it turns out accused killer george huguely was tasered in lexington virginia two years ago, during the arrest for public intoxication and resisting arrest. and the officer claims huguely threatened to kill her. the incident is putting administrators at the university of virginia on the defensive. they insist they never knew about his criminal record until now. >> i was startled to learn that there was no notification system. either through police department. or dean to dean. that exists in a formal fashion. that's not granular that's a hole to drive a truck through. >> huguely was also arrested in florida three-years ago for illegally possessing alcohol. >> well a viewing for yeardley love will be held tomorrow from 2:00 to 4:00 and seven to nine at the ruck's funeral home in towson. and a memorial contributions can be sent to the yard lee love memorial fund set up by notre

dame prep or yeardley love women's lacrosse scholarship fund for the virginia athletic foundation. information can be found @foxbaltimore.com. >> the state of maryland could soon join a battle over free speech. joy lepola tells us tonight the state is being asked to weigh-in on a church spreading messages of hate. >> in 2007, mathew snyder was killed in the war in iraq. at his funeral in maryland, the westboro baptist church of kansas protested. lined the streets with signs claiming american death were god's punishment for america's tolerance of gays. snyder's father sueed the church and won. but an appeals court reversed the decision and ordered al snide tore pay the church's legal fees. the case is now going to the supreme court. and snyder is asking maryland's attorney general to write a brief, supporting its case. >> i have faith in the american justice system. and, i think,, i will have the

as you went further south, northern portions of north carolina and southern virginia. there were some thunderstorms that popped up along the frontal boundary. but nothing around here. we stay dry through pretty much most of the day. looking at 71 degrees in baltimore. 70 in d.c. 65 in hagerstown. a little cooler on the western edge of the mountains in garrett county at 52. eastern shore, you folks sitting in the mid 60s. feeling good right now. as we go into the overnight. temperatures drop a few more degrees. and it looks like we will set up for a nice day with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. but cooler air pocketed back northwest of us. look at temperatures right now at 47 in chicago. and 63 in indianapolis. and we have 58 in cleveland. and it looks like we will continue to see temperatures cooling down as anotherp front heads our way toward saturday afternoon and saturday evening. clear skies right now. over the region. but you can see northwest. this is the next system gathering strength. over parts of wisconsin and iowa and illinois and michigan. that activity will slowly slip into our area as we go into late afternoon saturday.

and then by sun day the good news, is that it will be gone. timing future scan here. you can see one front moved through. high pressure dry for tomorrow. more warm air builds in from the southwest. and the warmest air probably will not arrive in time for saturday afternoon. because this is it by the morning hours. into the afternoon, the cold front pushes through. gives us a pop-up shower or thunderstorm. and breezy conditions behind that. and sun breaks out for sunday. so it looks like a beautiful sunday on tap. with cooler temperatures. with breezy conditions. so looking at 58 degrees. winds out of the northwest at 10-to-15 tonight. and then for tomorrow, plenty of sunshine. around 78 for downtown. and looks like a beautiful day. and then your five-day forecast shows saturday 20 percent to 30 percent chance of stray showers. so guarantee of rain, but better chance we will not. with temperatures at 78. behind the front, temperatures drop. 64 sunday. breezy mother's day. and monday, 67 degrees. and then looking at the next chance for showers on tuesday. back to you.

loyola and hopkins play each other, saturday afternoon. both desperate o grab an ncaa berth. loyola comes in 8th in the nation. and lost in the ecac tournament to denver that got the automatic bid. hopkins on the other hand struggled all year. and is in danger of missing the tournament for the first time since 1971. something has to give on saturday. >> every year it comes down to this game. you know, it is a great rivalry that we have established with johns hopkins. and you know, again, it will come down to having meaning at the end of the season for both johns hopkins and loyola. >> i think, more importantly right now, than the rivalry is where both teams are. i know for us, it is do-or-die mathematically. if we do not win we cannot be considered if we do we have every right to be considered. >> the charles street rivalry will be renewed saturday at noon at loyola new ridley athletic complex. back to you. >>
