mercury hitting 100 today. setting a new record. some sought refuge in the shade. others took a dip at sparrow's point. >> average person cannot deal with the heat. mud russ out there. >> cooling centers were open again today in the city, stocked with ice and cold water. hello, i am jeff barnd. jennifer is off tonight. relief tomorrow. but temperatures creeping back up again. chief meteorologist vytas reid has the forecast. when will it end? >> repeat of some of the heat back in play. but today was definitely a record breaker. down in inner harbour, the number was 101. but the actual number recorded out at bwi thurgood marshall airport, was 100 degrees. so that was the record today. 100 in d.c. 100 fredericksberg. so all across the mid-atlantic looking at very hot conditions. 86 right now in baltimore. 85 in d.c. looking at 79 in hagerstown. nice cool temperatures out there in garrett county and oakland at

63. what we saw wii was a front that pushed through. that allowed for cooling to take place. we got gusty thunderstorms on the eastern shore. now things are clearing and we have a northwesterly wind, so that's helping things as far as keeping the humidity at check. but none the less the humidity will return and the heat will as well. but tomorrow looking at plenty of sunshine to kick off the weekend. lunch time 86. closer look at the weekend outlook in a bit. >> thank you, vytas. >> baltimore county woman on trial for killing her husband. jurors hear a 911 call from the only witness. the couple's 16-year-old daughter. >> hurry. >> she is shooting your dad right now. >> she is shooting my dad. >> kelsey koontz was hiding in a closet while her father ron koontz was dying. prosecutors say it was coldblooded murder. defense claims koontz is insane. eventually the mother turned the gun on kelsey. >> she shot at me. >> she shot at you? are you injured kelsey?

>> no. >> koontz was arrested when police stormed the home. testimony in the case will continue tomorrow. >> a dundalk man is accused of brutally murdering his elderly neighbor. 89-year-old eleanor hailey was found in a pool of blood inside of her home on york drive in dundalk. michael hester stabbed and kicked hailey to death. investigators say the woman paid hester $3000 a year to cut her lawn. and recently loaned him $15,000 to pay off credit card debt. now neighbors want justice. >> i feel for his wife and his children. i also feel he should pay for what he did to her. >> it was hester that called 911, on the day of her murder. he is held behind bars without bail. >> city police investigate two double shootings that left one man dead. both occurred overnight. in east baltimore. a man and woman were shot.

bbth will survive. in west baltimore on mcmayken street, 33-year-old tyree page shot and killed the other victim treated and releaseed from shock trauma. >> the woman accused of hiring someone to kill her husband could get the death penalty. march 1st, porter shot and killed at the hesitation in baltimore county. today the state attorneys will seek a death sentence against the two for the roles in the murder. >> and maryland's death row has moved. the state's five death row inmates were taken this week from baltimore to western maryland. death row was located at the former supermax, you may recall. but that prison is now used to house inmates waiting for court appearances. execution chamber remains in baltimore.

>> this is glyndon and bond avenue in reisterstown where a child was hit by a car no one on the k but child taken to hopkins pediatrics with serious injuries. >> arundel county high school graduate drowns on vacation in the state of oregon. walter dines died swimming across the river in glad stone, witnesses say three boys were swimming there when one of them suddenly struggled. part of the way across. they say dines went under and never resurfaced. >> relief tonight, from the family of a todler left in a van, for hours, in this sweltering summer heat. 2-year-old izzie hill fell asleep inside of a day caravan wednesday on a field trip. the staff at fitness fn and games in baltimore. did not realize she was in the van when they got back four hours later. her grandfather found her in the van. >> i could think of my god, somebody took her from the park. oh, my god, you know, she has been killed. oh, my god where is she?

and then i was relieved, i was angry. i was overwhelmed. and i just -- i couldn't believe that they were solely responsible. >> izzie dallas cowboys ski hot when found and taken to the hospital aas a precaution. she would not return to the day care center. which issued a statement that said it is taking steps to make sure it does not happen again. >> gays working for annapolis can extend benefits to partners. lawmakers say it will cost the city more money. mayor claims the initial cost should be insignificant. >> they are unable to get that same legal rights and responsibilities, because they are prevented from marrying, but, i think, they deserve the same opportunities to get their partners covered. deserve the same legal rights and responsibilities, like hospital visitation and that sort of thing. >> several other maryland cities offer the same benefits.

>> word tonight, city council gave final approval to that 2-cent bottle tax. council approved the measure, that now tack os an extra two pennies for most bottled beverage purchases for three years. leaders say the fee will save thousands of jobs and generate $6 million in the first year. >> we need to do what we have to do to maintain te core service that is we have. >> i think, at the end of the day, this really does not make any difference on -- in terms of the services provided to the city. >> exempt from the tax are two lee der bottles, milk and juices. mayor is expected to sign it next week and should take effect july 1st. >> new bill in baltimore city is timed keep families safe during a fire. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake signed the bill at city hall. requiring all new one, and 2 family houses, built in baltimore city, to have fire sprinklers. the bill goes into effect july 1.

>> maryland orders utility providers to make it much easy fore residents to compare prices. public service commission wants all companies to provide more price information for standard utility services. so far, some 80,000 bge customers switched to independent suppliers. >> bge meantime working overtime, here is the operations building in woodlawn today. and bge said the hourly usage will peek at 6600 megawatts. all time peek was 7100, set back in august of 2006. >> hospitals and insurers agree to a 2.44 percent hike in the amount hospitals charge patients. measure has to be approved by a state panel. scheduled for june 7. any rate changes would be retroactive to july 1. >> the makers of seven cribs are recalling products because of concerns that babies can suffocate. become trapped.

you and i, appreciate it more than you will ever know. >> in texas governor perry declared sunday a day of prayer in the lone star state asking for the healing of individuals, building of communities and restoration of the gulf coast environment. in grand aisle louisiana, lora engle fox news. >> bp now estimates more than 2,000,000 gallons of oil are tainting the water every day. two teams in arizona teamed up and may have come up with a solution. they developed a type of sleeve that will fit over the broken and jagged pipe line allowing the crews to shut off the flow. it is made to prevent ice crystals from forming. and developers are awaiting the green light. >> condoms for kindergarteners. new policy in one massachusetts school district. kids in grades k-12, in province town can get a condom from the school nurse without their parents permission.

downtown. hot day in the inner harbour. 80 degrees. winds calm. humidity at 67 percent. air quality may not be good across the metropolitan areas, dc, philadelphia. and looking at the almanac page. story of the day. we topped out at 100 degrees. so that was a record breaking number, because our normal high should be at 85. and our record was 98 degrees back in 1966. so we beat that. by a couple of degrees. and it was pretty uncomfortable out there. inner harbour, the number was coming in at 101. so out at bwi thurgood marshall airport. they were at 100. then downtown, 101. dc got 100 degrees. fredericksberg at 100. and 98 in salisbury. 96 in hagerstown. factor in the humidity levels, heat indexes were feeling like 105. out there through the day. down in fredericksberg. 111 to 114 early. so hot temperatures. across the region. looking at mid 80s. 85 in d.c. 86 in downtown baltimore. 75 in salisbury. cool from some of the rain

there. 79 in hagerstown. bigger picture. we can see how the temperatures were hot across the core of the mid-atlantic. new york sitting at 82. 77, more comfortable the further north you go. all the bigger picture. we had the heat out there earlier today. we saw the hot air across the mid-atlantic. all the heat that was out there. now with the thunderstorms pushing through we had a cold front that stretched through the area. area of high pressure north of that that's helping to bring down a northwest flow. so change in the atmosphere. but what will happen is we will get plenty of sunshine to kick off the weekend. and clear skies across the area. but another frontal boundary builds in and helps to fire up, maybe few showers and thunderstorms across the mid-atlantic. maybe 20 percent chance. saturday. noon. moves out of here. back west we will on get more showers toward the end of the weekend sunday. so clear skies tonight. 81 degrees. d winds out of the west. dying down. which they are now. calm down now that the front pushed through. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. 89 degrees. so going to be a warm day.
