>> good evening, i am jennifer gilbert. jeff barnd is off tonight. we start with breaking news tonight a firefighter has been hurt in a fire in arbutis. crews are still trying to put out the fire. rancher on popular avenue near the school. no one else has been reported hurt. firefighter suffered an electric shock and was taken to saint agnes hospital. >> feels like 115. >> pace yourself. drink a lot of water. that's maryland weather. if you don't like it, wait a second. it will change. >> our top story, the temperature hitting highs that are hard to believe. tonight the city takes a break from brutal daytime sun. but has to prepare for another day of triple digit temperatures. as baltimore bakes. >> well, four days of triple digit temperatures this year. today broke a record for one of the hottest in baltimore's

history. how to the got coming up in the forecast. but first, all of this heat is posing a danger to our health. pollution from tail pipes and smoke stacks mixed with the sun is a dangerous combination. healthy people can be affected. best thing to do is limit the time you spend outside. >> what happens is that people can go outside, they will breathe in large amounts of the grand level -- ground level ozone, lungs are irritated may suffer coughing spells. shortness of breath. >> this weather is especially dangerous for children. they take in even more air than adults, and can suffer long-term lung damage. >> there was real concern tonight about the safety of the elderly. so the city opened five additional cooling centers today. several city agencies are checking in on seniors and other vulnerable groups. >> there are reports that the ravens wood nursing home has not had air conditioning since last friday. 60 residents were transported to other facilities tonight. now the ac has been partially

fixed but cannot cool all the floors immediately. so the rest of the residents, will most likely be transferred wednesday morning, and the ssate is looking into why the incident was not reported right away. >> baltimore city is expanding, the code red heat action plan. four city rec centers open as additional cooling centers. city pool hours are extended. fire department is staffing additional med-act units. and private homeless shelters asked to increase daytime hours through friday. >> you can find more detailed information. like the locations and hours of the cooling centers. on our website. foxbaltimore.com/news links. >> and the heat continues this week. the code red alert is extended to tomorrow. so how hot was the record breaking heat wave today? let's go to chief meteorologist vytas reid with the temperatures. vytas? >> jennifer, hot temperatures. record breaking heat out there folks. as we saw the temperatures soaring into the low 100s. record high today of

105 degrees. and the r stands for rising. some pockets could have gotten to 106, 107. but the recorded number, out at bwi thurgood marshall airport, was 105. the last record was on this day, back ii 1999, of 101. so we beat that by a few degrees. normal high is 88 this time of year. so you can see how high we are above that. across the state. other highs. dover at 102. salisbury 102. dc 102. 100 and as you noticed, we were the hottest temperature on the eastcoast. new york got up to 103. fredericksberg. that's about as close as it got. hottest temperature on the eastcoast. 93 in baltimore downtown. 87 in d.c. and it looks like we will have another day of heat tomorrow. and the good news, is that there is some breaks in the weather. tell you more about that coming up. >> thank you, vytas. >> as marylanders sizzle they crank up the ac. bge is expected to pump out a record amount of power for the

year today. the electric company expects hourly usage to peek, at some 6900 megawatts some time tonight. hourly usage on a typical summer day is 5500. >> well on a hot day like today. having a cool job is a luxury. workers at aaa ice on belair road in northeast baltimore, wear sweatshirts and long pants on the job. business produces 40 tons of ice a day. during a heat wave like this, the demand is double. >> phones are off the hook. everybody, hotels, restaurants, caterers, snowball stands, concrete companies, everybody. >> mcphearson said the extra business is great, but it takes a toll on the equipment and the delivery trucks. >> well, heat brings us to the question of the day. has the would heat wave forced you to change your daily routine? 43 percent say yes. and 57 percent say no. melanie writes on facebook tonight i normally run out, today i took my run inside, to

the gym's treadmill. >> 14-year-old boy is shot in the head. while he was playing with a family member. police say it was an accident. it happened late saturday night. at this house on belgium court and rutledge road in timonium. teen visiting his 12-year-old cousin. the boy girl found a handgun and it discharged. neighbors are calling the shooting a tragedy and a wake-up call for parents. >> if you have a gun in the house, and you have children, in the house, you should lock it up. but, you know, you should let them know you have the gun there. because some parents have guns in their homes and they do not tell the kids. when the kids finds it. it is a surprise. especially young kids. do not know what to do it, and think it is a toy. >> the 12-year-old's father is charged with having firearms accessible to minors. and obstructing justice. the boy is in critical but stable condition tonight. >> and friends and neighbors of

%-blood last week, are trying to help the family pay for a funeral. decided to hold a car wash. about a dozen teens were there yesterday and today. scrubbing down and hosing off cars, asking for donation. 17-year-old jordan canada gunned down at a bus stop near his home. organizers say helping jordan's family is helping them, get through heir own loss. >> he had a future. he was going to go to arts school. he was a good friend. >> he was just a real good friend to everybody. everybody knew who he was. good friend. >> well, they raised almost $600 on tuesday. police say the shooter is corey pal. 15-year-old friend of jordan's. pal is charged with murder. >> the fate of mary koontz is now in the hands of a jury. prosecutors say she shot and killed her husband and then

republican nomination. today he announced mike rye man as his running mate. a former federal and government inspector. >> meanwhile governor o'malley continues to promote the jobs that he said his administration has helped to create. today he was at under armour's tied point headquarters. under armour employs more than 1500 people in maryland. >> and city attorney jessamy faces what some are big calling the biggest challenge in more than a decade. greg bernstein announced his candidacy. he has strong tie with top officials with whom jessamy has butted heads in the past. and he is promiseing to tackle what he calls poor handling of high profile criminal and gun cases. patricia jessamy said she is standing by her 15 year record. >> mathis will take on dutch ruppersburger in the race for the second district congressional seat. two faced off back in 2006. then mathis was focused on

>> mother nature is not helping the disaster in the gulf. first, hurricane alex brought skimming to a standstill. now lingering storms delay heating up a new containment vessel. crews hope to have it hooked up later in the week. the hee licks producer could collect up to 25,000 gallons of crude a day. which would double the amount of oil being contained and burned. and now tar balls are showing up in texas. this marks the first time all five gulf states have been affected by the leak. >> and bp has repeatedly said that it will pay for all legitimate claims associated with the oil spill. but as we hear, there are questions and concerns now over whether bp should cover mental claims as well. >> alan crews for 25 years was a charter boat captain in al a as

the waters fill with oily worried fishing was gone for good. >> the day that the oil entered the gulf, my phone quit ringing. >> the mental stress took its toll. a month after the interview on his boat, the rookie, crews committed suicide. at the st. bernard project outside of new orleans, the wait for people seeking mental health services has stretched from three to four weeks, to seven weeks since the oil spill. >> what they are telling us, is that they are afraid of the future. you know, water, and culture, the water is not just the way they earn a income but a way of life. way families spend time and have for generations. no definition around of when things will be better. >> louisiana congressman joseph gahl introduced a amendment that would allow people to file mental health claims against bp liability fund. he said current law and bp claims process do not cover mental health services. he is appealing to president obama and the administrator of

the bp fund kenneth fineberg to consider such claims. fineberg's office would not specifically comment on whether they would do it, but in an interview, he talked about the delicate balancing act. >> you have to understand on the one hand you want to help as many people as possible with legitimate claims. on the other hand you have to draw some lines, some equitable distinction. now -- now where i will draw the line and under what circumstances, i cannot say. >> the house transportation and infrastructure committee adopted the amendment and it now heads to the house floor. but even he admits since the law was not in place at the time of the spill. there may be a legal challenge, getting bp to pay mental health claims retroactively if they do not do it on their own. but gahl believes they are legitimate claims that should be covered. lisa sylvester, cnn, washington. >> new study finds the cost of

harboring illegal immigrants in the united states is a staggering $113 billion a year. study conducted by the federation for american immigration reform, said that is about $1117 for every native headed household in america. but in contrast, another earlier study estimated illegal immigrants add $245 billion in gross domestic product to the economy. and accounts for 2.8 million jobs. >> arizona tough new law cracking down on illegal immigrants has prompted protest in the streets. now the fight heads to the court. the justice department has filed a lawsuit, challenging the laws of constitution nalteam. supporters argue the law is simply a state's attempt to deal with the problem the federal government is ignoring. the arizona governor has vowed to defend the law and her state. >> we will meet with them. and we will push back, and we

will fight as hard as we can. and i believe arizona will win the lawsuit. >> arizona's republican senators called the lawsuit premature and said it calls into question the obama administration's commitment to securing the border. >> well, our heat wave continues this week. code red alert is extended to tomorrow. is there any relief in sight? go back to chief meteorologist vytas reid with the answer. vytas? >> jennifer, there will be break in the heat later this week. but we have another hot day on tap for tomorrow. go out and see what is going on. hd skycam. downtown baltimore. a hot one. we have temperatures reporting at 85 degrees. now this is coming from bwi thurgood marshall airport. but we have the winds calm. so the air is stagnant and thick out there. with humidity levels at 55 percent. it looks like we are seeing the heat holding on. now we did have a record breaking weather event today. we're talking about the temperatures getting really hot out there. we saw a record -- previous record of 101 degrees.

now that was broken with those temperatures getting up to 105. so that is what we saw out there. 105 degrees. which created all the heat and humidity out there. now the humidity was not as much of a factor as the heat -ustained across the area. in fact, we do have watches and warnings across the region, until 11:00 tomorrow night. we're talking about heat advisories. through northern virginia. central maryland. eastern shore. as well as looking at excessive heat warnings around philadelphia. around the region. you can see the temperatures in the lower 100s. 105 recorded at bwi thurgood marshall airport earlier today. and that was the hottest temperature, on the eastcoast. we're talking about a record number that we are probably going to break for a long time. looking at 93 currently down in the inner harbour. and with the temperatures surrounding the area in the mid to upper 80s. it will be setting up for anotherer hot day in the making for tomorrow. and as the sun comes up and heats up the atmosphere. across the mid-atlantic. looking at temperatures still hot. matching new york at 93.

93 downtown baltimore. 82 in harrisburg. and we're going to see changes coming. here is what will happen. high pressure that has been blocking the moisture in the cold front off to the west of us. is going to continue to fall apart over the new england states. we will see an area of low pressure come in and wrap in moisture. that gives us a chance for pop-up showers. thursday. so across thh area a chance. but better chance to get the precipitation is when the front moves in, friday and saturday. so by the weekend we will start to see changes, in the forecast. tonight down to around in the mid to upper 80s. for tomorrow. high of 102. with plenty of sunshine. and your five-day forecast shows 93 for thursday. a little bit cooler from the hundreds. 95 friday. front moves through. and then a high of 89. back in the range of where we should be. and sunday, 91. back to you. >> all right. thank you, vytas. >> elvis has disappeared from a diner in rosedale. talking about 7 foot statue of the king. customers first discovered elvis was missing on sunday morning. the happy day diner on pulaski
