show up at businesses and banks in baltimore county. >> hit hard was this target. located within walking distance from the hotel. police say stokes and 2 other men had been under surveillance for days. they had planned to arrest the men as they were leaving the hotel last night. but say stokes pulled out a gun. >> he actually began to shoot at the detectives. detectives returned fire. at mr. stokes. at which time he was shot. fell in the parking lot. >> stokes was pronounced dead on the scene. a man with a lengthy criminal history. in pikesville, joy lepola, fox 45 news "late edition." >> police are not naming the suspect social security arrested. detectives meantime have been placed on administrative leave. >> police make arrests after seizing 85 pounds of marijuana. police arrested duane jackson and david andrews last night on waverly way. two supplied pot to dealers at lexington market. both held tonight at the city detention center. >> mayor stephanie

rawlings-blake is putting more new cops on the city streets. the mayor and police commission want to hire 10, make that 100 new officers, by the end of the year. the plan on creating a third background investigation squad to handle the large backlog of current applicants. >> at present, there are over 80 cases in the background process and over 100 and 20 waiting assignment for background investigator. >> the mayor's public bulletin comes hours after reports that changes in police pensions led to an exitus of 42 police officers retiring in june. she said her plan keeps pace with normal retiring rates and has plans to hire a record 350 police officers, in the year 2011. >> also tonight. a plan to increase wages in baltimore city is dead. for for you. after hearing more than four hours of testimony, a city council committee rejected a bill that would have required major retailers to pay workers the city's living wage.

it would force retailers that gross more than $10 million to pay employees $10.59 an hour. the sponsor of the bill, mary pat clarke said she hopes the bill can be revived. >> unemployment checks, will begin to flow again to people out of work six months or more. the extended benefits were cutoff in congress. debate centered on how to pay for all of it. democrats wanted it added to the deficit. republicans said it should be paid for. >> are we going to borrow the money from our children and grandchildren, send them the bill. or pay for it today and quit using it on failed stimulus plans? >> 5,000,000 unemployed workers are getting extended benefits. half of them cutoff for nearly two months. >> questions about who will pay medical bills after a five year old is hit by a police cruiser in northeast baltimore. ag williams struck tuesday. police say it appears it was pedestrian error. but his grandfather said police

already in effect for tomorrow. and also saturday. how hot is it going to get tomorrow? here is chief meteorologist vytas reid with the latest. it is not stopping here? >> if you thought it was hot today. it will continue to get warmer and hotter. as we go through the next several days. heading into the week. temperatures are going to continue to turn on up. much warmer air heading our way. looking at the temperatures for highs today in the mid 90s. 94 in baltimore. 96 in d.c. and even hotter temperatures south. right now we're in the mid to upper 80s. 86 in baltimore. 86 in d.c.. and 70s in hagerstown. look at the big difference. 78 in hagerstown. cooler to the west. but we have a heat advisory, including baltimore city down through dc and richmond through the metro areas. for tomorrow. and then into saturday. because of all the heat. it will be hotter in the lower 100s potentially on saturday. so tomorrow looking at starting out at 80. at 6 a.m. 94 at noon. and it will get warmer, or hotter, as we see the temperatures heat up quite a bit into the late afternoon hours.

tropical storm bonnie sweeps through the gulf of mexico. the edge of the storm is expected to reach that area by early saturday. steve reports the cap throttleing the flow of oil will remain in place unwatched for a few days. >> after three months of failure, open wound in the gulf is about to be shut. the temporary cap is working, stopping the flow of oil for one week. without further threatening the stability of the ruptured well. relief well long seen as the final answer to plug the leak is within 100 feet of the goal. and the second attack, pouring mud from above the blow out preventer giving a good chance to succeed, is just awaiting federal approval. work delayed depending on the strength in the path of the storm could be up to two weeks. leaving the temporary cap in place unmonitored is also a risk. >> the well will remain shut, meaning the oil is currently not leaking, which is the good news. and although there is a storm

property of a rival towing company. >> investors and coman ners those areas, are reaching out to these businesses and attempting to bring these people into custody. that committed the crime so far. and stop any further incidents. >> arson and shooting came two days after drivers for the two firms got into a wreck. one of the drivers was shot there. both tow companies lots are being guarded tonight as we speak by police. >> code red heat he warnings. telling you that all night. issued for tomorrow. and saturday. relief, from the heat, could come after the weekend. hopefully. here is chief meteorologist vytas reid joining us again with the forecast. what is happening? >> fingers cross order that relief. not a lot of relief. looking at the skycam. inner harbour shot here. sitting at 69 degrees. actually things cooling down a bit. which is good. and it looks like winds are calm. pressure sitting at 30.02 inches and seeing meandering of a front that has not moved through.

warm front out of the south. we saw temperatures, right now inner harbour, at 86 degrees. 86 in d.c. now out at the airport. cooler. so that's what we are seeing the difference there. now the heat advisory is in place for baltimore city. dc. and down through virginia. and as we see the day tomorrow. heat up quite a bit. that will be the same for saturday. but it will continue to get hotter into the low 100s. see that heat building up out of the south. you can see across the region. some of the 70s that are over the mountainous regions, but along the coastal and midwest. we have a lot of hot air that we will see moving into our region. now what is helping that? well we have a very active warm front stretching through the area, firing off severe storms up there toward kalamazoo michigan where they have a tornado warning right now. and they have cleveland and in ohio, tornadoes there. and this is riding to the south of us for now. for tonight. but tomorrow we will start to see the heat build up. because we have a high pressure

system that is just south of us. and this high pressure will wrap in that heat. from the west and bring the temperatures up. and all of that heat will continue to build in across the mid-atlantic. so things go up quite a bit through the next couple of days. future scan shows the precipitation north. but we could have a pop up is storm because of the heat and instability. and saturday same. but hotter temperatures. around the state. now, heading down to the tropics. we have to mention this. tropical storm bonnie. winds at 40 miles per hour. and gusting to 52. so gone up a tad bit. 287 miles southeast of miami. moving northwest at 14 miles per hour. the track of the storm, which we talk about earlier, could cause problems for folks out there trying to clean up the oil slick. off the gulf. making landfall, late saturday to sunday. and as we see the storm come onshore as a tropical storm. watch the strength of the storm to see if that affects folks down there. looking at the beach cast. if you are going out to the eastern shore. good in ocean city.
