right. >> first package opened at 12:30 at the jeffrey building in annapolis, blocks from the statehouse. >> the second package opened 20 minutes later at the state department of transportation building in hanover. near bwi thurgood marshall airport. we have team coverage tonight. karen parks is in annapolis. and first, keith daniels is standing by live in hanover. keith, what can you tell us? >>well, jeff, there was no bomb here. but there was an explosion scare for the people that work here. now, someone wanted to deliver that package to state transportation secretary beverly swaine staley. she was in the building. but officials say that parcel never made it to the desk. it made it to the fourth floor where her office is located. officials say the package is about the size of small books. igniteed and released a sulfer like smell. investigators say it was the opening of the package that caused the incendiary device inside to activate. >> there was no fire. there was no explosion.

there was no white powder. >> now, the incident triggered an evacuation of the building with more than 200 employees moved here, to the parking lot. officials say no one was hurt. >> now the first alert again came after a package opened in downtown annapolis. addressed to the governor. karen parks, in annapolis w that report. >> here in annapolis maryland, around 12:30 this afternoon, here at the statehouse, at the jeffrey building. a mail room employee opened a package. inside of that package a hazardous device that released smoke. and a strong odor of sulfer. the employee suffered minor injuries. and the device did not cause damage to the building. a fire alarm sounded off. and nearly 50 employees were evacuated for two hours. the annapolis bomb squad, state bomb squad and fbi officials are here investigating. the pick age, which was the size of a book, actually had five christmas stamps on the front of

it. it was addressed to governor o'malley. who was on the eastern shore for a conference. it appears that the package was sent by u.s. mail. >> when the employee opened that package, there was an initial flash of fire and smoke, and a smell that emanateed from that reaction. employee reported his fingers singed but refuse any medical treatment. so minor irritation to that employee. >> the jeffrey building houses the governor's office of planning, the deputy secretary of state veteran affairs. and state homeland security officials. mail room at state offices across maryland are quarantined until it is determined if any other packages have been sent. reporting here in annapolis, karen parks. >> and new tonight. governor o'malley confirms that package sent to him contained a

note. it complained about those overhead highway signs that tell people to report suspicious activity. those alert signs have drawn criticism in the past for creating traffic backups. >> well two more suspicious packages in downtown baltimore this afternoon. turned out not to be dangerous. crews determined the package at the maryland department of health and hygiene building on presstman street full of laptop batteries. roads shut down and part of the building evacuated. at the mitchell courthouse package it was printer toner. >> dangerous packages in baltimore city heighten tension nationwide. congressman rue bersburger is on a homeland subcommittee and he said the investigation is not pointing to a wider conspiracy. >> all the intelligence coming in shows at this point, this was a lone situation. that's positive. because, you know, people are out there that want to do us harm. we have to always be aware. unfortunate but that's the way we have to live in our country right now. >> and our terrorism analyst

said while both devices did not explode it may not have been for lack of trying. >> more of the inability of the people that created the devices, that would explode under the conditions that they wanted it to. especially since they wanted to beat the scamming system and so on and so forth. lack of skill does not indicate lack of motive. >> you can hear more from our terrorism expert, and today's news conferences, simply by going to foxbaltimore.com and clicking on "raw news." >> another big story tonight. we could see snow overnight. >> that can make for a messy morning commute. how much could we see? and when does it get here? here is chief meteorologist vytas reid with the latest sky watch forecast. vytas? >> jennifer and jeff, yes, snow expected overnight into early morning rush hour. in fact, looking at the h.d. radar. a little light snow trying to

come down over northern baltimore county. but it is not reaching the ground. but west of westminster, thurmont, frederick, frederick county, light snow coming down. it will slowly make the way east. and probably start to get light snow around two, 3:00 in the morning. put it in motion. you can see how the activity will continue to move in over the area. atmosphere has to get saturated enough to start reaching the ground. upper level disturbance, low pressure, will continue to drape down over the area. more of the energy absorbed north of us and western edge of the mountains out there in west virginia. but for us, light accumulation. in fact, in the future scan predicted snowfall. we can see there is not much at all. just a trace. maybe a quarter of an inch possibly. but up to cecil county. half inch or more. and wilmington, philadelphia. areas could get inch or more. and new york city, three to six. so check ahead to see if you have any flight delays by morning rush hour. and then into the afternoon. but all and all it looks like relatively just a bit of

nuisance. give yourself extra time on the roadways, because we could see flakes during rush hour. back to you. >> thank you, vytas. >> in other news. no sign of a missing north carolina teen that disappeared a week ago. billboards like this at 295 and russell street put up. police are hoping someone has some sort of information. so far there has been little to go on here. phylicia barnes missing since december 28. visiting family in the city for christmas. >> and montgomery county police are looking for a man that looks like this. they say he raped two elderly women. one, twice. at her townhome in germantownment the other woman attacked across the street at a senior living center. >> bad day for a guy in pittsburg. demolition crews knocked down his house by mistake. andres hall came back from the holidays to find the house he bought, had pretty much reduced to ruble. the house was in bad shape but

hall was in the middle of fixing it up and had the proper paperwork, from the city, including from the building inspector telling the contractor not to demolish the house. city is blaming the contractor. >> what happens to me now? what happens to all the work i did in the house? my tools are gone. my family, where do we go now? >>well the city of pittsburg said they will not be using that contractor any more. >> good day for ron williams choking over the resignation of wise. executive that sparked public outcry for firing williams. she resigned as senior vice-president for news, on the same dayas that npr board of directors completed the review of william's firing. good news for npr that they can get someone that is the keeper of the flame of liberal orthodox out. >> i don't know how anyone can

>> first on fox tonight. a 4-year-old at a baltimore city elementary school is spanked by a teacher. mother is outraged because the teacher is not being disciplined. the child attend pre-k at northwood elementary school. police say the teacher admits to spanking the child but no charges are being filed because there was no bruising. police also said that child protective services declined to respond to the same reason. >> to me, it is not right. now you let everybody know that you can beat a child in school, and nothing will be done. i have to worry about my kids going to school and get beat on when they should be safe. >> school said that the teacher is on leave. >> first on fox. 4-year-old is dropped off by a harford county school bus driver and left alone on a country

road. happened monday. luke brown's mother said that the bus was, at least, 10 minutes ahead of schedule. so she was not there yet. she said her son luke wandered half a mile before going to a neighbor's house. >> i don't know how anyone can sleep at night knowing they left a4-year-old by themselves. >> well school administrators refused to do on-camera interview but say it is the parent's responsibility, once the child gets off the bus. >> hard to believe that. speaking of no common sense. very little demonstrate sense in indiana. heather sturgis pulled her daughters out of little miracles ministry day care after she claims worker tied up one of the children. 7-year-old was crying when sturgis picked up the girls monday. girl said that she was tied up with yarn. >> they said go get some yarn, and then they took her, she was shoes and socks and tied up her feet and arms. >> well police are

investigating. >> so like he was healthy b because if i had done all of this and something was wrong. >> jessica [inaudible]. >> dialed 911 because things were getting worse. paramedics came to take her to the hospital and with one push, she delivered a baby boy. she claims she had never knew she was pregnant. mommy and little blake williams are doing just fine tonight. >> wow! >> a battle over what your kids should read in school. which words they should be exposed to. some high schools ban mark twain's novels, adventures of tom sawyer and adventures of huckleberry finn because of racist language. new editors are making new language and changing the n-word to slaves. critics call it censorship. our question of the day was should the references be removed from twain's novel? 91% say no. 9% say yes.

amber writes. no, next it will be knocking off other planets. look out for pluto. mike writes, yes, as long as all forms of art, including rap lyrics are changed. otherwise, leave history alone. >> we could wake up to snow in the morning. >> lingering for the weekend? here is chief meteorologist vytas reid with the snow. >> rush hour tomorrow morning, give yourself time and patience heading out. we are seeing cloudy skies in baltimore. few flakes in the upper atmosphere try to work down. see some of the snow scattered across the area. no snow in the inner harbour. 34 degrees. winds calm. and it looks like humidity levels right now at 69%. presh surdropping as we continue to see that area of low pressure. that upper level low push into the central portion of the state. looking at temperatures across the region. you can see currently 33 in hagerstown. 23 in oakland. colder. dc at 34.

salisbury at 35. winds out of the south, so we have the southeast flow. very light. but still brings in marine layer of air that continues to run into the cold temperatures. so that helps to create a little bit of moisture. that is in the freezing precipitation type. that's the snow that we will see come down across the area. light -- expected light snow showers across the central portion of the state. up to pennsylvania, delaware, heavier. but where the snow will come down is up toward new york state. and then up toward connecticut. those areas will get heavier snow. back in parts of west virginia, also, getting accumulating snow in the mountains. but tomorrow morning, 8 a.m., we will have snow across the area. but it leaves the area as we get into lunch time hour. so it will be short lived. but it will be continuing to come down up there toward new york city. so if you have plans to travel or fly that direction. check ahead to see if you have any delays. right here the future scan. predicted snowfall here. model shows the computer shows most of the snow north or west of us. we are seeing light accumulation

across the central portion of the state. some areas may not get much at all. once again bigger picture here. shows area of low pressure bringing down the snow showers. and heavier snow will be contained north. and it looks like, like i said, 3 to 5 to 6 inches maybe up around connecticut. new york city. get more snow. they do not need it. but they will get it. looking at snow showers after 3:00 in the morning for tomorrow. rush hour, owe snow showers at 35 degrees. and then it will leave us, through the weekend. by next week, watch tuesday. with another snow storm potential. >> a scientist defends his study linking autism to [ sniffing ] >> a scientist defends his study
