after days of protests and calls by egyptians for their president to step down --- president hosni mubarak says he will not seek re-election. samantha hayes has more on the turmoil in cairo... --reporter pkg-as follows -- after more than a week of demonstrations calling for an end to his regime- egyptian president hosni mubarak announced he will not seek another term-i was not intent on standing for the next elections because i have spent enough time in serving egypt.

protesters reacted angrily to mubarak's announcement, some even showing the soles of their shoes during his speech, an ultimate insult, in arab muslim countries. many say they want mubarak to relinquish power now- rather than waiting until elections in september. mubarak has been in power for 30 years and a major ally of the united states in the middle east.in a dramatic shift in u-s foreign policy with egypt- a u.s. envoy urged mubarak to make the announcement- president obama spoke about the change from the white house tuesday night.now it is not the role of any other country to determine egypt's leaders. only the egyptian people can do that. what is clear and what i indicated tonight to president mubarak is its my believe that an orderly transition must be meaningful. earlier tuesday tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in egypt's major cities. in cairo's tahrir
